LEARNING WITh Tech –IN&4- THE COMMUNITY
David Onyango – Kisumu Girls High School.

                                         Project Overview

Learning Areas Biology, Home Science, Swahili, English, Geography
                                Levels 13- 18 yrs

Objectives Enabling learners relate what they learn in classroom
within the context of their immediate
                               community/surrounding

Description
With the help of meaningful and relevant technological tools, learners were offered learning
experiences ranging from experimentation to real-community problem solving. As a means of
learning and acquiring the 21st century skills, learners made valuable connections with
mentors in the community and gained deeper cross curriculum knowledge.

Technology: MS Word, MS PowerPoint, Bing, Google, Adobe Presenter 7, Windows
movie maker, Qr Codes, Adobe premiere, MS Autocollage
 Project goals:

To get students to showcase the product of their work on health issues concerning blood in the
community using skills learnt on communication and relevant technology.

To enable students combine, synthesis, analyze and interpret new information on the topic of
blood and health issues with what they already know (from biology and home science lessons)
to generate ideas and understandings that are new to them.
LEARNING WITh Tech –IN&4- THE COMMUNITY
Project Planning and Management:

Our students had just finished collaborating in developing a website alongside two other
schools Littleton high school, Littleton, Colorado USA, and Government Secondary School,
Abuja Nigeria; based on a negotiated and agreed topic of communication.

We wanted to have these learners use the skills of communication they had acquired from that
project to showcase and communicate what they learnt in classroom within the context of their
immediate community/surrounding. The students expanded the whole idea to include learning
in 4 and with the community.

The learners were given the opportunity to choose the topic of concern that they wanted to
learn with the community. They agreed on the topic of Blood. The wanted to know how exactly
the blood typing/grouping was done; They wanted to know more about blood and the
challenges facing the blood in the community; They wanted to find out about characteristic
traits related with blood group with a view to help solve some of the problem of indiscipline in
the school ; They wanted to research on the food for each blood group.

The project Plan

The students were the ones who chose the topic of blood after negotiations among themselves.
They then divided themselves into 4 groups:
Group 1-The lab Technicians. They were to research from internet, biology textbooks, the
biology teacher on how grouping is done.
Group 2 – The psychologists: they were to research on the traits connected with each blood
group.
Group 3 – The Community social workers: They were to research o the perception and myths
connected with blood in the community.
Group 4 – The dietician: they were to research on the foods in the market and the school and
connect food with blood groups.

The project was easily managed because it had clear-cut sub-sections of concern and plan. The
students also worked in groups; each group was able to complete their self assigned tasks,
getting help from the teachers where necessary. Working within agreed time frames also
helped the project to be completed on schedule time of 4 weeks as agreed upon by the
students themselves.

Taking back information to the community: to the hospital, to the mothers who have just given birth.
Advising them against using certain traditional herbal plants as they have discovered their harmful effects to
blood.
