Xen is an open source virtual machine monitor(VMM) for X86 compatible computers.Xen facilitates to run multiple operating sytem on a single computer with the help of a software layer called hypervisor .Hypervisor act as a traffic cop,directing hardware access and coordinating request from guest operating systems.it can securely execute multiple virtual machines,each runs own its own OS. Xen can run Linux, Solaris,Windows and some of the BSDs as guest on their supported CPU architectures.
Xen was first released in 2002. \'Xen source.inc\' and \'Virtual iron software inc\' promoted Xen as a primary open source competitor to commercial virtualization products such as VMWare.
Xen released under the terms of GNU General Public Licence, was originally a project at the University of Cambridge.
2 ) Apart from Xen a new virtual machine called KVM ( Kernal-based virtual machine ) gaining more popularity.KVM is a light weight hypervisor for linux. KVM is relatively new comer but its simplicity of implementation and strength and continued support of Linux heavyweights make it worthy for serious consideration.
