2. Andre Derain: 1880-1954 Born in 1880 in Chatou, a small town outside of Paris, France.In 1900 he met Maurice Vlaminick on a train. There they decided to rent a studio together to try and break out of the boundaries of impressionism. From 1901 to 1904 Derain left to go to war. When he returned, he focused on painting. Shortly afterwards, he attended Academie Julian.
3. 1906 Derain was hired to compose a series of paintings as London as the subject. They remain today, and are some of his most popular works. 1907 Derain was married to Alice Derain. 1919 designed a ballet called La Boutique fantasque. This inspired him to create most of his ballet paintings.
4. In 1928, Derain was awarded the Carnegie prize and started to exhibit worldwide In 1941 he accepted an invitation to make an official visit to Germany. He was invited by Hitler’s Foreign minister. After the war, he was publicly condemned because many saw him as a collaborator with the Nazi’s Alice Derain and Andre Derain serperate. 1954 Derain dies due to complications of a car crash.
