2. WELCOME
We are delighted to welcome you to Omnibus, the newest multi-arts centre in London.
Seven years ago, Lambeth Council announced its intention to close this building and
relocate the existing library. As the building would be redundant, a group of local
residents, lead by Opera singer George Owen, set about raising funds and generating
local support to turn this much-loved landmark into an arts centre. By 2012, against
strong opposition from commercial developers, Omnibus had succeeded in persuading
the Council to grant them a lease.
Every effort has been made to respond sensitively to the Victorian design and to
maintain the original fabric of the building. The overhaul has included the restoration of
parquet flooring in the foyer and the refurbishment of the cast iron architecture of the
mainstaircase.Amagnificentvaultedceilingwasdiscoveredinthemainhallonthefirst
floor, hidden for decades by modernisation in the 1960s.Thanks to the time and money
donatedbythelocalcommunityandthesupportofLambethCouncil,theoldlibraryhas
been given a new lease of life and we are proud to open our doors with a programme of
work which aims to make a difference to the cultural life of Clapham and beyond.

community.
Responding to this unique space and location is an integral part of our creative delivery
and it is with great pleasure that we launch our theatre programme with a centennial
