In the 1990’s, Alexander Proud opened his first gallery in London dealing in rare
Japanese prints. However, he soon realized that a limited market existed for this
particular art form, and sought to find a niche that could be rolled out to the general
public. Fortunately, he soon ran into photographer Dennis Morris, whose work featured
popular artists from Bob Marley to the Sex Pistols.
Seeing a huge opportunity to appeal to more than just
connoisseurs of fine art, Alexander Proud opened up a
photography exhibition that blew the public away with
its appeal to a young, diverse mix of new collectors.
From that one successful exhibition, Alexander Proud’s
empire was born. The Proud brand now includes an
eclectic mix of entertainment venues that seek to bring
the art of photography to the general populace while
providing them with a unique atmosphere and
experience.
Among the most unusual of the Proud venues is Proud Camden, a bar and live music
venue set in the 200-year-old Grade II Listed Horse Hospital in the Stables Market. It
contains the signature hallmark of Alexander Proud, dressed up with legendary
rock’n’roll photography, but that’s not all: the original stables that previously housed
injured horses remain intact, and customers can even occupy them to enjoy a flat screen
television equipped with sports and movie channels, or check out a DVD or video game.
After 7:30pm, live music can be heard throughout the night, with such artists as Jessie J,
Ed Sheeran, and Babyshambles featured, among many others.
For those seeking even more in the way of live entertainment, not far from the bar is
Proud Cabaret Camden. Touted as a burlesque venue that will “knock your socks off” by
the Daily Star, this location is one of three such cabarets presented by Alexander Proud,
and features sumptuous surroundings and glamorous performances, including a recent
addition to the lineup, Killing Kittens, featuring some of the finest burlesque in London,
with a little extra something added. For each Killing Kittens performance, guest’s tables
will be numbered and equipped with a telephone, allowing secretive phone calls to any
other table guests fancy. Come for the food and drink, stay for the live shows and the
nightclub included in the price.
