2. Introduction
• Montgomery McFate is the former senior social scientist for
the US Army’s Human Terrain System. Currently, she serves
as the Minerva Chair for the Naval War College’s Center for
Naval Warfare Studies. A charitable member of her
community, Montgomery McFate gives to the Save the Bay
Foundation of Newport, Rhode Island. One way Save the
Bay raises money, aside from donations, is through their
Exploration Center and Aquarium.
Located right on the beach in Newport, the Exploration
Center and Aquarium is home to over 40 species native to
the Narragansett Bay. The interactive science center’s
animals often include octopus, lobsters, seahorses and
more.
3. Narragansett Bay
• The aquarium is home to three “touch tanks,” letting you
get close to and touch sea stars, dogfish sharks, and other
underwater wildlife.
On the third Thursday of every month between 5 and 6
p.m. the aquarium holds a “Feeding Frenzy,” where guests
who have booked advanced registration can assist
aquarium staff in feeding some of the sea creatures.
General admission to the aquarium is $8, with discounts for
military service members and seniors. To learn more about
the Exploration Center and Aquarium, visit
