Montgomery McFate is the Minerva Chair at the Naval War College and leads a research team as part of the Minerva Program, which was started in 2008 by the Secretary of Defense to improve national security through enhanced social science research across multiple military branches. The Minerva Program studies social, cultural, behavioral, and political influences on regions important to the US and includes scientific research and foreign language studies, with each military academy proposing new research topics every few years to study issues like cultural knowledge as it relates to national security.
