I am currently a student at California State University, Stanislaus for many reasons. Social forces
have strongly impacted and influenced my decision to attend CSU Stanislaus. Societal factors such
as social institutions, cultural norms, personal values, historical place and time, globalization, and
the roles of social class, race and ethnicity, and gender all have played a role that has shaped my life
in one way or another.
Two social institutions that have impacted my current status at CSU Stanislaus are education and the

That proved to be untrue. No job is truly financially stable, but there are some majors that have a
better chance of finding a job and keeping it. Despite the bad economy, a college degree is still
better than just a high school diploma. I feel like these days it is crucial to have a college degree in
this unstable economy.
Cultural norms have greatly influenced my decision to go to college. In the United States, it is the
norm that as a high school student you continue your education and go to college. Everybody
expects you to go to college. Your parents, teachers, and your counselors try very hard and pressure
you to go to college. When I was a high school student, I always thought that we had an option. You
can either go to college or get a job. I was wrong about that. It really isn't an option when you 're
forced to go to college through social circumstances. This doesn't mean that I didn't want to go to
college. What I am trying to say here is that we need to feel like it is okay if we don't go to college.
We need to know it's socially acceptable that we didn't attend college. I feel like I really didn't make
the decision to go to college. Everybody else did. We are made to think that the only way to be
financially successful is to go to college and get a degree. Then were supposed to find a job and

There are over one thousand colleges in the U.S, but the University of Southern California is the
college to attend for various reasons. USC is a well rounded school that provides a variety of clubs,
activities, scholarship opportunities, and academic classes. The faculty and staff of the University of
Southern California work hard to make each student that attends successful and well–prepared for
the working environment in the near future.
The University of Southern California began to develop in 1871 when the citizens of Los Angeles
believed it was time to pursue the idea of establishing an institution of a higher education. Eight

made out of granite that has been polished. It is situated on a cement pathway across from Yogurt

Going to college is a scary thing whether a student is fresh out of high school, a non–traditional
student going back after many years, or anything in between. It can be very daunting to keep up with
the level of understanding required for college courses. Many subjects, especially math and writing,
are found to be a challenge for a lot of students. Therefore, the University has provided free tutoring
services to help increase the quality of learning and experience and to help students reach their
maximum learning potential. Unfortunately, several students do not take advantage of this free
service. One reason some might not use the service, is that it may be difficult for them to admit that

Reflection Paper On Refugees
The first day of my internship at the Refugee Legal Service in Dublin, Ireland I learned the
difference between watching news clips on refugees, and what it meant to actually go through the
whole process. The asylum process is a painstaking, time consuming, and emotional ordeal. During
my time there, I ended up meeting with dozens of refugees, but there was one event that I can still
remember clearly. I was invited to help work on a case involving a woman and her son fleeing from
South Africa due to facial scarring on the first–born child. After a meeting with several members of
our legal team, I reached out to the caseworker and asked if there was anything extra I could do to
help their case. She asked that I try to find more evidence to support the claim that facial scarring
was still going on in the village the family was from. After spending days researching the area the
village was in, I was able to find other accounts of facial scarring. Because of my extra efforts that
helped her case, I was invited to attend the hearing at the High Court. This opportunity was
incredible and overwhelming and I know this was only a fraction of the work that you have to go
through to be granted asylum. The hearing was eight hours, long and I was one of the few people
allowed to sit in the back of the courtroom and take notes. Throughout the entire day it was
interesting to see how the asylum process actually works, as opposed to hearing or reading about it.

It's a new year to be back on campus to see friends. A new year to look forward to events and
classes, and another year of wading through library walk in the sea of new faces. Over 5,000 new
freshmen faces and over 2,000 transfer faces to be exact. With many new students on campus, there
are concerns about the university's ability to accommodate these new students with current
resources.
The entering freshmen class had 84,222 applicants and 30,264 (35.9 percent) of those applicants
were admitted as stated on the University of California's website; a jump from last year's 34 percent
admittance rate. Although the number of students that will attend remains unknown, we can expect
over 5,000 new first–year students based on the number of the registered incoming students from
UCSD's First–Time Freshmen Statistics in the fall of 2015, which was 5,292 students.
At the same time, 18,487 transfer students applied and 9,809 of those students were admitted (53
percent) for the fall of 2016 as stated on the University of California's website, a three percent
increase from the previous year's admittance rate, and at least 2,678 new transfer students are
expected to matriculate based on last year's statistics from UCSD's Transfer Admission Statistics.
From these admission statistics, it's clear that there will be more students on campus this year than

respond to stakeholder needs, public educational institutions, such as the University of California,
have not been willing to control their bureaucratic growth resulting in a rise of tuition rates and a

that as recently as November of this year the University of California has approved a plan that could

As childhood comfort slowly slips away when children transition from elementary, middle, to high
school, the idea that seemed so fantastical in toddlers' daydreams becomes concrete and frightening:
the future. High school students are presented with a short four year period to decide what they want
to pursue, and the junior year of high school is where most students are hit hardest. As a junior, the
daunting task of preparing for one's future is suddenly presented, and everything one has
accomplished in life, in combination with many standardized tests, will be assembled to do one task:
applying and choosing a place of higher education. Three important criteria in college searching are
admission standards, location, and athletic programs, and two post–high school institutions, Rice
University and the University of California– Berkeley, will be compared based on these aspects. As
a primary benchmark, the admission standards for a university will need to be evaluated in order to
decide if a college is suitable for one's academic rigor. Admission standards for Rice University
consist of "either the SAT and two SAT Subject Tests in fields related to their proposed area of
study, or the ACT Plus Writing test" ("Standardized Testing") in addition to: a high school transcript,
the Common Application with Rice Writing Supplement, $75 dollar application fee, a counselor

Blue and red lights flashed outside, while I saw my father being handcuffed; my mother and older
siblings crying. I was seven at the time, didn't really understand what was happening but later I

around for thirty minutes looking for a place to park. Glancing at the clock that shows you only have

The Bakke Vs. The Regents of University of California case is one of the most well known supreme
court cases in America dealing with the topic of affirmative action. Stated by Eastland, "affirmative
action policies are those in which an institution or organization actively engages in efforts to
improve opportunities for historically excluded groups in American society" (10). In 1978, the
plaintiff Bakke filed a suit against the University of California, claiming that his rejection from the
school was a result of racial discrimination and that it violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the
equal protection clause of the Constitution's Fourteenth Amendment, and the California Constitution
(Posner 171). The U.S Supreme court ruled that affirmative action was constitutional, but not the
use of racial quotas. The significance of this case is that it dealt directly with two major theories
prevalent to minorities and race: Their assimilation into the university setting using affirmative

In the early 1970's UC Davis decided to have a dual admissions program for their medical school.
The purpose of having two admissions programs in one would be for regular students and the other
one would be for "disadvantaged" students. Minority applicants could now say they were
"disadvantaged" so they were put in the special pool which would make it easy for them to get into
the medical program. One major differences between both programs is that through the
"disadvantaged" program you could have lower than a 2.5 and still be eligible to get into the school.

The Regents of the University of California v. Bakke case in 1978 explored the issue surrounding a
young white man's rejection from UC Davis' Medical School when students with lower grades than
him were accepted through a minority benefits program. The young man, Allan Bakke, was rejected
in two successive years before filing suit in the Superior Court of Yolo County, arguing that he had
to be accepted to the school since those with grades lower than him had been accepted through the
benefits program. The school claimed that the goal of their minority benefits program was to further
diversify their campus. The program was intended for minority or disadvantaged students, but soon
became entirely racially based, which was evident, since no white students were ever accepted into

two months after being detained by campus police for making such threats in a counseling session.
According to Public Health Law, Poddar expressed that he was going to carry out the action of
murder during two different counseling sessions, which his psychologist, Dr. Moore, had no choice
but to have him detained. He was released after promising to stay away from Tarasoff, however, he
followed through on killing Tatiana Tarasoff. During this time frame, according to the "Facts" from

consensualizing was to get others' insight as to whether is was the psychologists place to warn
Tatiana Tarasoff or her parents of this threat, and break confidentiality with her client. The

as social institutions, cultural norms, personal values, historical place and time, globalization, and
the roles of social class, race and ethnicity, and gender all have played a role that has shaped my life
in one way or another.
