What Is The Difference Between Hawaiian Dance And Culture
A LITTLE INFORMATION ABOUT HAWAIIAN DANCERS
Hosting theme parties are so much fun. You can choose quirky decorations, mix and match your
cocktails to suit the theme, play a particular genre of music that relates to your theme, and so much
more. Nowadays, there are so many different themes from which people can choose to host a party.
You can go old school and host a "decade dance" kind of thing where your guests dress up according
to the way people did in that decade, you can go tropical, etc.
If you are thinking of hosting a Hawaiian themed party, with tiki decorations and rum–based
cocktails, then to give your party a more authentic feel, you can hire a Hawaiian dancer. With the
swing music and your Pina Coladas, this would be the highlight of your party. ... Show more content

Athletes Dancing Research Paper
Athlete Dancers or just Dancers? Ever wondered what it would be like to leap through life, twirl
right through, as if the world has completely stopped around you? To be able to pause everything in
a silence that allows you to hear your own heartbeat? The silence on stage as you perform is a sense
of peace within your inner body that is being channeled through a movement of effortless motion. In
European history, dance was considered to be a way of celebration for many cultures. Although it
was said that dance did require physical agility, dancers were never considered athletes because the
movement was not taken seriously. Dance did not become popular in a more skillful way until later
on. The debate of dance as a sport is very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, injuries are less common. Therefore, dance should not be considered a sport. "Dance is not a
sport because there are no winners or losers, also there are no limitations or rules" (Guarino). These
people are mistaken because, dance competition judges score each performance based on Technique
(1–25 points), Style and Execution (1–25 points), Showmanship (1–20 points), Costume (1–10
points), Choreography (1–10 points), Degree of Difficulty (1–5 points) and Age Appropriate
Performance (1–5 points) for a maximum possible 100 points. A final adjudicated score is
determined by an average of all judges scores. After this all dancers are put on stage and awarded
with trophies 1st–10th place depending on the 1–100 average scoring from the judges. Therefore,
dancers do have a set of rules and scoring just like any other athlete. Regarding injuries, they do
occur. Most dance injuries are long–term because of the physical stress constantly being put on a
dancers body. There are also instant injuries that happen while dancing, most commonly occurring
in the knees, ankles, back, neck or hips. "The physical ability and discipline expected of a dancer
can be easily related to those of an athlete and increasingly, dance critics are describing dancers as
athletes" (Ailey). Ultimately, dancers are consistently proving, even to the critics, that they obtain
the skill needed to be considered an

My Social Dance Experience : Dancing At A Barn Owned By My...
For my social dance experience, I am going to discuss dancing at a friend's wedding that I just
recently attended. The dancing occurred during the reception following the wedding and took place
at a barn owned by my friend's Pastor. The barn was meticulously decorated with burlap, lights, and
much more. The people dancing were mainly middle class Caucasian people. The age groups
dancing ranged from teenagers to people around 50 years–old. I chose this dance event to participate
in and analyze because the atmosphere was very celebratory and fun. I also thought that it would be
fun to analyze a social dance experience that my friends and I would have still been a part of even if
I had never taken dance appreciation. By using the things that ... Show more content on

The body movements mainly used the hips, arms, and legs. Spacing was extremely unorganized
because it is social dance, and especially in contemporary time there is no rhyme or reason to the
way people move across the floor. However, the average amount of space between individuals
remained fairly constant.
During the social experience it was interesting to analyze how I experienced and felt about the
movement. For me the movement was very enjoyable because social dance especially in a
celebratory setting is much less about perfect execution and more about being very enthusiastic and
into the music and movement. Of course, you obviously still want to look good while dancing, but it
is not necessary to be a fantastic dancer. The music was very upbeat and lively. I find it quite
hilarious, but I truly enjoy doing head and neck movements where I can swish my hair or really
percussive and jumpy motions.
As I took part in this social dance experience there were two dancers in particular that stood out for
me. The first dancer who really caught my attention was the bride herself. She is a wonderful dancer
and is very graceful. She was absolutely radiating joy, and, of course, all eyes were on her anyway.
The way she interacted with other dancers, for example her fiancé and her father, and her grace
and charisma immediately drew you in.

Contra Dance : The Wonder Of Social Music
Contra Dance: The Wonder of Social Music
On the 2nd of September, I experienced one of the most enjoyable folk dances at the First Baptist
Church which is the contra dance. Due to my cultural and religious background, this experience was
new to me and full of mysterious. However, it led me to wonder how social music, especially contra
dance, is powerful enough to let strangers dance and communicate with each other in a perfect
harmony. The contra dance community was friendly. There was a group of people that differ in age,
gender, occupation and experience. Yet, by utilizing the different techniques of the contra dance,
including the unique atmosphere, none of these boundaries existed on the dance floor. Another
reason that makes the contra dance community approachable is that no preparation is required. The
dances are taught a step by step at the beginning of each dance, so no prior classes are needed for
participation. Also, the dress code is another comforting feature to this community. It is informal and
therefore there is no need to spend lots of money on fancy clothes. Thus, you only need to bring
your musical soul to the community and you will find yourself dancing like you mean it. Both of the
band and the caller have significate roles in leading the contra dance. First, it is obvious that the
music reflects a major part of the success of dances. The live band makes the atmosphere and the
music sound much better because they are engaged with the dancers and

1.2 Dancing: Dancing in One World
This video documents an international cultural festival that took place in Los Angeles. Again, while
many of the groups presented here are not American, you will hear peoples from around the Pacific
beautifully expressing how dance is an integral part of their culture. While the American public
might not be as conscious of the powerful connection between movement and identity, it is the claim
of this course that the former can be an important lens on the latter, even in America. Listen closely
to how the participants at this festival talk about dance and culture. Compare this with how you
relate dance and culture.
At the beginning of the video, the festival coordinator claims that: Culture is the only way you can
move across the boundary lines of language, race, and economic ghettoization. Certainly language,
race and economics are part of culture, but the speaker is using a

Personal Narrative-Hazel Brown
The slim, white framed mirror positioned in the corner of my room glares back at me, projecting a
transparent image of reality. The reflective glass reveals my hazel brown eyes, pale smile, freckled
face and confident stature. Yet what lies beyond the perfection–beyond the seemingly faultless
façade–is a tsunami of fear suppressing the strength I once possessed...
I stand courageously timid on the blue coarse carpet stained with sweat, the horrendously bright
lights leaving me in a haze. The white lines paint the stage, dictating the movement of the dance. My
legs tremble from not only the ice rink's chill, but also the fear and anxiety that drench my body

beauty are emotions of fear, confusion, thoughts of distress, expressions of uncertainty: an image of
weakness. The fears, failures, anxieties, and flaws hidden inside my disoriented mind overwhelm the

The characters: Barry Fife, Shirley Hastings, Rico and Ya Ya in the film Strictly Ballroom have been

Under the control of Hitler from 1918–1939 Poland was under serious attack. Concentration camps
were being constructed and Poles were possible targets because, at the time, Poland was home to the
worlds largest Jewish population (Polish Diaspora). In 1939 Poland was invaded by Germany and
was put under the Soviet Union's control. One cultural aspect Poles like to exercises is their right to
freedom and to be different, but under the rule of the USSR it was very hard to express ones
individuality and religion. Communism called for unionism and the Poles disliked this way of life.
This lack of personal freedom handicapped the Polish culture, not allowing it to grow because many
Poles were not known as wealthy. Because Poland was lacking in artistic culture Paris became their
center for literacy and artistic expression (Barnett, 374). Many feared for their lives around this time
and fled to America in the 20's, allowing for the spread of Polish values over seas. This is the main
cause of the Polish diaspora because many of the Poles immigrating to America were Jewish (Polish
Diaspora). During the communist reign a particular group, not like the Jewish Polish community, of
people called the Lemko's had ritual and folk dances that could not be performed because they
feared the government would catch them and punish them like they were to the Jewish Poles(Black,
47). It was very important to this group of Polish people to continue there dances

Social Dance: Social Dancing And Ballroom Dance
Social Dance
Social Dancing is partner dancing which is informal, relaxed and danced for the enjoyment, not for
an audience or event. It is danced for enjoyment, socialisation and health. To prove that social
dancing is a success, you need to look at the enjoyment the partners have from the dance, not how
much correct they had danced in the eye of others.
Social Dancing has no general teaching and learning curriculum. It depends on the teacher who is
teaching the style he had chosen to his students. Social dance teachers teach steps and styles they
preferred or what their students want to learn. The techniques and steps that are taught can vary
from teacher to teacher.

This can make a very unpleasant and uncomfortable situation for your dance partner, and it may
result in you being turned down for many dances. Always remember to wear deodorant and bring an
extra deodorant if you need to. Also, bring mouth wash or gum to freshen up after eating something.
Chewing gum while dancing can be dangerous so make sure you throw it away before you dance.
Corrections ;
It is rude and often frowned upon to correct someone while dancing. If you have suggestions, save it
to class time. It is best for your teachers to make the corrections. Unless somebody asks you to make
corrections, don't make any on the dance floor. It would be okay to give suggestions to others during
class time if it's asked, but if you are in a group class, you should be silent and listening to the the
teacher only. It is best to smile and thank your partner and say nothing about their dancing.

KINDS OF DANCE
BALLET–
Is one example of Theatrical or Spectacular Dance. It refers to a series of solo and concerted dances
in which poses and steps are combined with light flowing figures accompanied by music and scenic
accessories expressive of a dramatic story theme or atmosphere. Ballet serves as backbone for many
other style of dance since many other dance genres were based on ballet. Ballet dancers wear tights
and leotards during class or rehearsals while TUTOS or ballet skirts are reserved for performances.
Learning the poses and steps of ballet most of them have French names. It's because, King Louis

Social Dance : An Exceptional Method
Social dance is an exceptional method to conjugate with other individuals in a social setting. Rather
than viewing a dance performance in an auditorium or participating in a dance class at a studio, I
experienced social dancing at my cousin's wedding. The wedding clearly defined different social
values with its environment, attendees, and especially, the dance movements.
The location of the wedding brought a very warm atmosphere to the abundance of the people
present. Each person greeting one another while gazing at the decorations of the venue. The
decorations consisted of silk, white, long draping along each of the four walls. Underneath the
draping were red and orange lights, reflecting off the drapes. The centerpieces were tall and
elaborate with branches, fall–colored leaves and pearls, contributing to the wedding's autumn theme.
People were scattered around in the grand ballroom of the hotel, either eating the scrumptious food
or congratulating the newlywed couple. While women and men dressed in couture dresses and
pressed suits, the little children wore petite cupcake dresses or a little suit and tie. After everyone
situated themselves an hour later, the dancing commenced, and the social atmosphere greatly
increased.
Joyous laughter and countless dance styles pervaded the dance floor as the intense music played in
the ballroom. People of all ages were dancing on the floor from little children to teenagers and

The varieties of jazz dance reflect the diversity of American culture. Jazz dance mirrors the social
history of the American people, reflecting ethnic influences, historic events, and cultural changes.
Jazz dance has been greatly influenced by social dance and popular music. But, like so much that is
from America, the history of jazz dance begins somewhere else.
The origins of jazz music and dance are found in the rhythms and movements brought to America
by African slaves. The style of African dance is earthy; low, knees bent, pulsating body movements
emphasized by body isolations and hand–clapping. As slaves forced into America, starting during
the 1600's, Africans from many cultures were cut off from their families, languages and ... Show

Just when social dancing was at its height, World War 2 put a stop to its popularity. Lack of
attendance, plus the intricate rhythmic patterns of modern jazz music, which were too complex for
social dancing, led to the closing of dance halls and ballrooms. With the demise of social dance, the
growth of jazz dance as a professional dance form began. During the 1940's, jazz dance was
influenced by ballet and modern dance. By blending the classical technique of ballet with the natural
bodily expression of modern dance, jazz developed a sophisticated artistic quality. Unlike early jazz
dance, which was performed by talented entertainers without formal training, modern jazz dance
was performed by professionals trained in ballet and modern dance.
It was during this time that man who later came to be known as the Father of Theatrical Jazz
Dance, Jack Cole, was busy developing his technique. Jack Cole had studied modern, ballet, and
ethnic dance, had been a student at Denishawn and had done choreographic work in the nightclub
scene. In the 1940's there was a serious demand for groups of trained dancers for film work and Jack
Cole was the one who started developing these trained jazz dancers for the Hollywood movie
musicals. Also, during this time Gene Kelly, began making his mark as a dancer in Hollywood
musicals. His impact on jazz was his individual, energetic dance style that combined athletic,
gymnastic qualities with jazz and tap.

Conformity In Mad Hot Ballroom
The idea of a social dance, where ladies and gentlemen partner together to perform standard north
American and Latin ballroom dancing brings us an understanding of conformity in the competitive
ballroom dancing.
Strictly ballroom(1992) gives us a central idea of social dance, principally with how a man is
viewed to be and act accordingly with the lady. It really shows us the customs associated with it, as
to be followed by a regulation of a social view. lead and follow is the key to getting two partners
to dance together smoothly. The man has to have a strong frame for the woman to feel it and
respond carrying on with the move. The traditional view of ballroom is how a man is seen as
powerful and strong , leading and deciding which steps to take whereas the woman responds and
follows along in a beautiful and expressive way. Gender plays a big role in ballroom dancing, and
behaving in a sex–consistent way is reinforced. Those dance movements is shown quite well in
Strictly ballroom, as how the main characters were dancing in a heteronormative manner. ... Show

Compare And Contrast Grass Dancing And Fancy Shawl Dancing
Both grass dancing and fancy shawl dancing can be seen at Native American powwows throughout
the United States. The dancer moves to the consistent pulse of the drum, touching their foot to the
ground with each drum beat. Shawl dancing and grass dancing require a fair amount of skill and
practice, as they can be complex and very energetic dances in which one has to move quickly yet
smoothly around the arena.
The grass dance and fancy shawl dance have contrast in their origins. Grass dancing is thought to
have originated in the Plains tribes when the elders ordered the young men to stomp down the tall
grasses in preparation for meetings, camps, powwows, or other ceremonies. Some tribes believe that

Grass dancers typically wear base attire with fringe made of yarn, broadcloth, or ribbon throughout
the regalia. In addition, they wear an H–harness, which is a set of 2 long suspenders that hang to

involved in grass dance regalia than men's traditional regalia. Usually only a roach feather with 1–2
feathers or 2 fluff antennae with be perched atop the dancer's head. As the grass dancer circles the
arena, he may hold feathers, dream catchers, hoops, or dance sticks. Fancy shawl dancers wear a

beaded hairpieces, chokers, earrings, bracelets, and eagle plumes. Moccasins are the common
footwear, while leggings cover the calves of the legs. The shawl is obviously the most significant
part of the dancer's regalia because as an extension of the arms, it assists in depicting the dancer's

and in PD, describe limitations of dance research in these populations, and identify directions for
future study. The article goes to state that for the elderly we have tried and experimented with many
styles of dance to see the effects while in PD what has been experimented has been quite limited.
They conclude with both areas have a wide–range of benefits from dancing but additional effort
should be dedicated to well–designed studies using outcome measures to identify best possible

events in the performance. The dance piece was composed of several story lines and plots. There
was a piece in which it there was a guy and a girl who with their dance movements expressed hate
and love. Other dances expressed the path to finding freedom, loneliness, and time. 2) What themes
or ideas was the piece trying to convey? How did the piece convey its ideas? The piece was trying to
convey the idea of freedom. Liberating the soul by expressing what it feels in a form of dance,
which is something that can be seen. The movements were free, the performers moved around the

How did that costume give you insight into that particular character or into the world of the piece?
Most of the costumes in the performance were similar, just ranging in different colors. They were
neutral and similar to what a ballet performer would wear. The material of their costumes gives them
the flexibility to to move and dance around for comfortably. Their dance movements require each
performer to wear that type of outfit. 9) Was there music in the piece? If so, how did it contribute to
the world of the piece? If not, was there a moment when you felt like music might have enhanced
the action (be sure to specify what kind of music you'd want to hear in the scene: classical, punk,

What Is The Difference Between Rogers And Hammerstein's Dance
The stage performance of Rogers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma was a beautiful integration of book,
song and dance. The three elements add richness and aesthetic quality in very distinctive ways.
Dance is a form of expression using rhythmic movements of the body. Facial expressions and the
use of body language through dance offer portrayals of feelings that compensate for dialogue. The
choreography done by Agnes de Mille integrates dance into the lives of the frontiersmen (and
women) of the Oklahoma territory. The 20th Century Fox film version released in 1955 had key
differences than the current Broadway musical. One of the main differences other than a little extra
dialogue was the utilization of dance. In the film dance was not used as a ... Show more content on

He is singing to Aunt Eller but also hoping to capture Laurey's attention from inside. This is the
beginning of the love affair between Laurey and Curly. It is certain that Curly likes Laurey however
her feelings towards him are not yet defined.
Curly does not formally dance while singing Oh What a Beautiful Mornin'. He however does freely
move about the stage as he serenades Aunt Eller. Utilizing the song to have the free right to move
around the set is important. It allows Curly to get close enough to the house in order for Laurey to
hear his voice. If this scene were simply dialogue, Curly would have to stand in one area. If he
moved about while just talking to Aunt Eller it would seem intrusive or rude. Also, if Curly simply
arrived at the farm to talk to Aunt Eller and ask the whereabouts of Laurey the scene would lose
aesthetic quality. There is more of a sense of wooing and is more romantic to have Curly singing and
frolicking about the farm in search of Laurey. For Curly to put so much effort into his entrance it is
certain that he has feelings for Laurey.
The film version of Oklahoma utilizes the song and movements similarly to the stage performance.
Much of the Oh What a Beautiful mornin' number was done by Curly riding his horse on his way to
Aunt Eller's farm. However he continues to sing upon his arrival. Thus luring Laurey out of the
house.

Analysis Of Strictly Ballroom
Strictly Ballroom employs the dance medium to effectively create characterisation, the plot and a
clash of cultures. Dance is used to explore character's feelings and struggles at a point in time to
further enhance the plot. It is used to show attributes and emotions of characters and provides
examples of clashing cultures though dance.
Dance is the focus of Strictly Ballroom as the film follows young ballroom dancer Scott Hastings
who is going through a personal struggle to stick to regulation steps, and therefore dance is integral
to the plot. Dance is the focus of the film it explores the characters, for instance Scott uses dance to
advance as a character. In the beginning, he tries to break free through dance, then as he dances on
the rooftop with Fran he breaks free to an extent. Dance is used to as a device for characters to use
to help set them free form their troubles as this is used the plot is advanced. Dance is the characters'
lives the different styles in the movie represent different emotional states they are in and this further
continues the plot as they face their personal struggles.
The film strictly ballroom encourages the viewer to relate to the journey experienced by Scott and
Fran in the film. The viewer relates to the non–conformity, self–expression and individuality that
dance creates which enhances characterisation. Scott is short tempered and stubborn and this shown
in his dancing at the beginning of the film. His dance sticks to regulation steps

Expression Dance
The Expression of Dance
Cultures use a variety non–verbal communication, some put more emphasis on specific channels,
including facial expressions, body language, vocal tone, and eye contact. However, there is one
medium that is repeatedly shown high significance, dance. Although they way people move their
bodies to rhythm vary, the feelings that seem to be communicated are similar if not the same. Some
popular messages include love, intimacy, sexual attraction, companionship, and even sympathy.
Some of the simplest ways to observe subliminal messages is by identifying interactions between
dancing partners, clothing choices, and dancing style. Dance is the hidden language of the soul. –
Martha Graham
What is the significance of the interaction between dance partners? In it's most simplest form, dance
is purely an announcement that meet other people. Described in Interplay, this is called initiating
the opening stage of all relations, not just romantic ones. Friendships start here, and so do business
partnerships. (Adler, Ronald B) In other words, when you ask someone to dance, it opens the
possibility of a new friendship and possibly a connection to other people and more relationships. A
study of adolescents in schools put it another way. Shared social or physical activities can
systematically affect the emergence of ties between individuals in a social network. (Zander,
Lysann) It also suggests that meeting people through dance reaches on a deeper level.

Square Dance History
Square dancing is danced all over the world. It is a dance tradition formed in the United States but
its history goes back to about the fifteenth century in Europe. It has its roots from the morris dance
in England which involved sequence dance choreographed by men. It became a trend in England
that inspired country dancing. As country dancing grew, it started to evolve. Overtime, few things
change the dance a bit. Folk dances from different countries in Europe like Scotland, Spain,
Scandinavia is also thought to influence square dance. It is also said to be influenced by cotillion
and quadrille from France because of the arrangement of squares in formation. Square dance is a

French dance styles became overwhelmingly popular after the American Revolution. As population
grew and expanded, the younger generations stopped practicing the social dances that was once

evolved, memorization of steps became unnecessary because there was a designated person to give
dance cues. Square dancing relied on the caller to give cues and sometimes even singing along. It
became humorous and entertaining for everyone who participated and even for the audience. Live
music was played and the African–Americans contributed their own moves into the dance. Square
dance involves a lot of swinging and movements. There are about 4 styles of square dance. They are

Mad Hot Ballroom Analysis
In the films, Strictly Ballroom (SB) by Baz Luhrmann (1992) and Mad Hot Ballroom (MHB) by
Marilyn Agrelo (2005) both examine ballroom dancing but in different ways that define a distinctive
meaning. In SB and MHB the spectator sees distinctive characters and their goals that are similar
and that is to do the dances right and ultimately win. In both films there is a powerful dynamic
within the beginning of how the characters are portrayed and towards the end where the characters
have developed through dance. Dancing becomes a great part of Scott's life in SB because that is
what he's been taught. In SB Scott shows his new moves at the competition with his partner and

especially the young boys did not feel comfortable about ballroom in the beginning, but as they
continue dancing and step out of the conformity of the typical child in New York and discover

comfort zone can become powerful for a person's change. In SB, Scott stepped out of the academy

Swing Music Essay example
Swing Music
During the nineteen thirties and nineteen forties a certain style of music became very popular. This
style of music became known as swing. It was performed using rhythmic 'riffs' and is referred to a
style of dance and band arrangements. America maintained swing's popularity throughout the World
War Two years when both large and small ensembles toured Army and Navy camps both at home
and abroad. At home, swing was heard at bond sale rallies and community concerts. The new sub–
culture of women workers also adapted boogie–woogie and other novelty and jive styles. There are
two forms of swing; performed swing and recorded swing. Recorded swing was stricter, and
performed swing allowed much more improvisation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A popular form is the Smooth Lindy, which is basically a Lindy with no kicking patterns or
Charleston.
East Coast swing, otherwise known as the Jitterbug is another type of swing dancing. It is more
social and less acrobatic. Although this style of swing is what most people learn at first, it is not
really a swing–era dance. (This dance is learned as, One and two, three and four, rock–step.) Most
swing dance had an eight–count rhythm. (Counting to eight, with each beat equal to one step.) With
the evolution of the 12–bar blues, however, the jitterbug lost two counts and became the dance of
early rock–and–roll. It is taught as a swing dance, however, because it is much easier to grasp than
the Lindy. This dance was not created until the 1950's. The version that is taught most often is done
to fast big–band music and is also called East Coast Swing.
Another type of swing is West Coast Swing. It is a six–count or eight–count dance where the man
moves the woman in a straight line, the slot, while he steps out of the way, instead of the circular
patterns of the Lindy Hop. The dance is also danced to much slower music than East Coast which
allows for more time for intricate steps and synchronized movements between partners.

The Performance Of The Dancer 's Body As An Agent
The performance of the sabar in Senegal, and the performance of improvised social dancing in queer
clubs in New York City, exemplify the dancer's body as an agent and protagonist in each dance
form. For queer people, improvised social dancing allows them to experience an embodied
confidence that is carried with them in their negotiation of life as a sexual minority. For Senegalese
women, dancing in the sabar opens a gateway for them to celebrate their sexuality in a way that
challenges the authority of the male gaze. In both social dances there is interaction between the
dancer and the music. This interaction produces a level of agency, confidence, and power that is
epitomized in their movement. The dancing of the Senegalese women in the sabar, manifests as an
empowered agency over their own bodies. In the ethnography, Choreographies of African Identities,
Francesca Castaldi explains that the gathering of women in the shape of a circle literally opens up a
space filled with their expectations and intent...[t]hus women physically take over the public space
of the city, and supported by the gewels ,... reconstitute it as a sabar dancing circle (80). This
emphasizes the agency of the women dancers in this space. Their physical, womanly presence is
what stakes claim over and produces the intention of the space, and the music produced by the
gewels is only there to support what the dancers are already doing.

Analysis Of Josephine Baker, An Iconic African American...
Josephine Baker was an iconic African–American dancer, singer, actress and civil rights activist.
Her rise to fame included her erotic dancing, her comedic expressions and her risqué sense of
style. She was well known for her Danse Sauvage and her most famous Banana skirt dance. She
was a unique artist that differed from the rest. With that being said, I would like to focus the main
aspect of this paper on her originality of tackling racial stereotypes through performing, her unique
sense of style as a world–famous entertainer, and most importantly her evolutionary banana skirt
dance. To begin with, Josephine Baker's rise to fame began in 1925 as a dancer, when she moved
from the United States to Paris, France where she performed in La Revue Nègre at the Théâtre
des Champs–Elysées. She was an immediate sensation, because of her erotic dancing and sense of
style. More particularly, Josephine Baker and her dance partner Joe Alex performed the Danse
Sauvage which is a French saying for wild dance. This dance performance was only the
beginning of her long, successful career as a performer. Josephine Baker's dance form was different
from many other African American artists during that time era, which is why she was so heavily
adored. On stage Josephine baker would dress in over–the–top outfits, most of which bared her
almost nude. During the Danse Sauvage, Josephine baker dawned only a small feather skirt, which
made her sense of style risqué, yet loved by many French

Rhythm can but used with sticks or other objects or good movements. Dance can also begin with
patterns in service of ritual. The chorus is originally just such a dance, and it was performed in a

around the world was used to tell stories. Back then, Native Americans would have celebrations

In the 1920's, their were dancers, and they were known as the Flapper. During that time period,
women would smoke, brank, and cut their hair, wore makeup, took risk, and danced. This time
period today is called the Roaring Twenties. The Roaring Twenties would have young women
with bobbed hair and short skirts, who would brink and smoke. In the 1920's most young women did
not of that, But many did adopt a fashionable flapper wardrobe. Popular dance today, people would
take more risks than back then. But however dancing had become more independent over the
generations. Contemporary dance began at the start of the 20th century. When US dancer Isadora
Duncan broke away from ballet, she started to developed her own natural style in 1878–1927.
Contemporary dance has many different styles, but some often closely linked to music such as jazz,
rock in roll, hip–hop ect. But when did dance start? The first record dancing by our definition is
among the ancient civilizations of the middle East and India and among the people in America,
Australia, and Africa. Actual dance forms appear to have been in place in India around 6000 B.C.
Why do people do dance? They do it because it can be used for physical fitness, or if they had a bad
day or something , then they could dance it off and kinda cool down. One other reason people might
dance is because dancing is very entertaining, so therefore, where does dance live in our society

Hawaiian Dance Culture Explained

  • 1. What Is The Difference Between Hawaiian Dance And Culture A LITTLE INFORMATION ABOUT HAWAIIAN DANCERS Hosting theme parties are so much fun. You can choose quirky decorations, mix and match your cocktails to suit the theme, play a particular genre of music that relates to your theme, and so much more. Nowadays, there are so many different themes from which people can choose to host a party. You can go old school and host a "decade dance" kind of thing where your guests dress up according to the way people did in that decade, you can go tropical, etc. If you are thinking of hosting a Hawaiian themed party, with tiki decorations and rum–based cocktails, then to give your party a more authentic feel, you can hire a Hawaiian dancer. With the swing music and your Pina Coladas, this would be the highlight of your party. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Here is a little information on them. Hawaiian dancers perform a dance called Hulu, which is a traditional Hawaiian dance. These dance performances are soft and very soothing to watch because of the kind of music they use. • 3. Athletes Dancing Research Paper Athlete Dancers or just Dancers? Ever wondered what it would be like to leap through life, twirl right through, as if the world has completely stopped around you? To be able to pause everything in a silence that allows you to hear your own heartbeat? The silence on stage as you perform is a sense of peace within your inner body that is being channeled through a movement of effortless motion. In European history, dance was considered to be a way of celebration for many cultures. Although it was said that dance did require physical agility, dancers were never considered athletes because the movement was not taken seriously. Dance did not become popular in a more skillful way until later on. The debate of dance as a sport is very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, injuries are less common. Therefore, dance should not be considered a sport. "Dance is not a sport because there are no winners or losers, also there are no limitations or rules" (Guarino). These people are mistaken because, dance competition judges score each performance based on Technique (1–25 points), Style and Execution (1–25 points), Showmanship (1–20 points), Costume (1–10 points), Choreography (1–10 points), Degree of Difficulty (1–5 points) and Age Appropriate Performance (1–5 points) for a maximum possible 100 points. A final adjudicated score is determined by an average of all judges scores. After this all dancers are put on stage and awarded with trophies 1st–10th place depending on the 1–100 average scoring from the judges. Therefore, dancers do have a set of rules and scoring just like any other athlete. Regarding injuries, they do occur. Most dance injuries are long–term because of the physical stress constantly being put on a dancers body. There are also instant injuries that happen while dancing, most commonly occurring in the knees, ankles, back, neck or hips. "The physical ability and discipline expected of a dancer can be easily related to those of an athlete and increasingly, dance critics are describing dancers as athletes" (Ailey). Ultimately, dancers are consistently proving, even to the critics, that they obtain the skill needed to be considered an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. My Social Dance Experience : Dancing At A Barn Owned By My... For my social dance experience, I am going to discuss dancing at a friend's wedding that I just recently attended. The dancing occurred during the reception following the wedding and took place at a barn owned by my friend's Pastor. The barn was meticulously decorated with burlap, lights, and much more. The people dancing were mainly middle class Caucasian people. The age groups dancing ranged from teenagers to people around 50 years–old. I chose this dance event to participate in and analyze because the atmosphere was very celebratory and fun. I also thought that it would be fun to analyze a social dance experience that my friends and I would have still been a part of even if I had never taken dance appreciation. By using the things that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The body movements mainly used the hips, arms, and legs. Spacing was extremely unorganized because it is social dance, and especially in contemporary time there is no rhyme or reason to the way people move across the floor. However, the average amount of space between individuals remained fairly constant. During the social experience it was interesting to analyze how I experienced and felt about the movement. For me the movement was very enjoyable because social dance especially in a celebratory setting is much less about perfect execution and more about being very enthusiastic and into the music and movement. Of course, you obviously still want to look good while dancing, but it is not necessary to be a fantastic dancer. The music was very upbeat and lively. I find it quite hilarious, but I truly enjoy doing head and neck movements where I can swish my hair or really percussive and jumpy motions. As I took part in this social dance experience there were two dancers in particular that stood out for me. The first dancer who really caught my attention was the bride herself. She is a wonderful dancer and is very graceful. She was absolutely radiating joy, and, of course, all eyes were on her anyway. The way she interacted with other dancers, for example her fiancé and her father, and her grace and charisma immediately drew you in. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Contra Dance : The Wonder Of Social Music Contra Dance: The Wonder of Social Music On the 2nd of September, I experienced one of the most enjoyable folk dances at the First Baptist Church which is the contra dance. Due to my cultural and religious background, this experience was new to me and full of mysterious. However, it led me to wonder how social music, especially contra dance, is powerful enough to let strangers dance and communicate with each other in a perfect harmony. The contra dance community was friendly. There was a group of people that differ in age, gender, occupation and experience. Yet, by utilizing the different techniques of the contra dance, including the unique atmosphere, none of these boundaries existed on the dance floor. Another reason that makes the contra dance community approachable is that no preparation is required. The dances are taught a step by step at the beginning of each dance, so no prior classes are needed for participation. Also, the dress code is another comforting feature to this community. It is informal and therefore there is no need to spend lots of money on fancy clothes. Thus, you only need to bring your musical soul to the community and you will find yourself dancing like you mean it. Both of the band and the caller have significate roles in leading the contra dance. First, it is obvious that the music reflects a major part of the success of dances. The live band makes the atmosphere and the music sound much better because they are engaged with the dancers and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Such productions including Raja Edeupus, Master Qi and Monkey King, and Julius Caesar all show different sides of their own culture throughout the piece. For example, Raja Edeupus shows their Indonesian culture through their praising of a master and their artistic design within costumes and setting. Much like the Chinese culture widely expressed in Master Qi and Monkey King that utilized martial arts with dancing to implement a story. Again, while many of the groups presented here are not American, you will hear peoples from around the Pacific beautifully expressing how dance is an integral part of their culture. While the American public might not be as conscious of the powerful connection between movement and identity, it is the claim of this course that the former can be an important lens on the latter, even in America. Listen closely to how the participants at this festival talk about dance and culture. Compare this with how you relate dance and culture. The reflective glass reveals my hazel brown eyes, pale smile, freckled face and confident stature. Yet what lies beyond the perfection–beyond the seemingly faultless façade–is a tsunami of fear suppressing the strength I once possessed... I stand courageously timid on the blue coarse carpet stained with sweat, the horrendously bright lights leaving me in a haze. The white lines paint the stage, dictating the movement of the dance. Perhaps it is his use of overworked clichés or manipulative ways of deception, possibly his stagnated outlook on life and vanity that makes him so complex, but Barry Fife is the epitome of all men in high positions. Under the control of Hitler from 1918–1939 Poland was under serious attack. Concentration camps were being constructed and Poles were possible targets because, at the time, Poland was home to the worlds largest Jewish population (Polish Diaspora). In 1939 Poland was invaded by Germany and was put under the Soviet Union's control. One cultural aspect Poles like to exercises is their right to freedom and to be different, but under the rule of the USSR it was very hard to express ones individuality and religion. Communism called for unionism and the Poles disliked this way of life. This lack of personal freedom handicapped the Polish culture, not allowing it to grow because many Poles were not known as wealthy. Because Poland was lacking in artistic culture Paris became their center for literacy and artistic expression (Barnett, 374). Many feared for their lives around this time and fled to America in the 20's, allowing for the spread of Polish values over seas. This is the main cause of the Polish diaspora because many of the Poles immigrating to America were Jewish (Polish Diaspora). During the communist reign a particular group, not like the Jewish Polish community, of people called the Lemko's had ritual and folk dances that could not be performed because they feared the government would catch them and punish them like they were to the Jewish Poles(Black, 47). • 27. Social Dance : An Exceptional Method Social dance is an exceptional method to conjugate with other individuals in a social setting. Rather than viewing a dance performance in an auditorium or participating in a dance class at a studio, I experienced social dancing at my cousin's wedding. The wedding clearly defined different social values with its environment, attendees, and especially, the dance movements. The location of the wedding brought a very warm atmosphere to the abundance of the people present. Each person greeting one another while gazing at the decorations of the venue. The decorations consisted of silk, white, long draping along each of the four walls. Underneath the draping were red and orange lights, reflecting off the drapes. The centerpieces were tall and elaborate with branches, fall–colored leaves and pearls, contributing to the wedding's autumn theme. People were scattered around in the grand ballroom of the hotel, either eating the scrumptious food or congratulating the newlywed couple. While women and men dressed in couture dresses and pressed suits, the little children wore petite cupcake dresses or a little suit and tie. After everyone situated themselves an hour later, the dancing commenced, and the social atmosphere greatly increased. Joyous laughter and countless dance styles pervaded the dance floor as the intense music played in the ballroom. Jazz dance mirrors the social history of the American people, reflecting ethnic influences, historic events, and cultural changes. Jazz dance has been greatly influenced by social dance and popular music. But, like so much that is from America, the history of jazz dance begins somewhere else. The origins of jazz music and dance are found in the rhythms and movements brought to America by African slaves. The style of African dance is earthy; low, knees bent, pulsating body movements emphasized by body isolations and hand–clapping. As slaves forced into America, starting during the 1600's, Africans from many cultures were cut off from their families, languages and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Just when social dancing was at its height, World War 2 put a stop to its popularity. Lack of attendance, plus the intricate rhythmic patterns of modern jazz music, which were too complex for social dancing, led to the closing of dance halls and ballrooms. With the demise of social dance, the growth of jazz dance as a professional dance form began. During the 1940's, jazz dance was influenced by ballet and modern dance. By blending the classical technique of ballet with the natural bodily expression of modern dance, jazz developed a sophisticated artistic quality. Unlike early jazz dance, which was performed by talented entertainers without formal training, modern jazz dance was performed by professionals trained in ballet and modern dance. It was during this time that man who later came to be known as the Father of Theatrical Jazz Dance, Jack Cole, was busy developing his technique. Jack Cole had studied modern, ballet, and ethnic dance, had been a student at Denishawn and had done choreographic work in the nightclub scene. In the 1940's there was a serious demand for groups of trained dancers for film work and Jack Cole was the one who started developing these trained jazz dancers for the Hollywood movie musicals. Also, during this time Gene Kelly, began making his mark as a dancer in Hollywood musicals. Utilizing the song to have the free right to move around the set is important. It allows Curly to get close enough to the house in order for Laurey to hear his voice. If this scene were simply dialogue, Curly would have to stand in one area. If he moved about while just talking to Aunt Eller it would seem intrusive or rude. It was performed using rhythmic 'riffs' and is referred to a style of dance and band arrangements. America maintained swing's popularity throughout the World War Two years when both large and small ensembles toured Army and Navy camps both at home and abroad. At home, swing was heard at bond sale rallies and community concerts. The new sub– culture of women workers also adapted boogie–woogie and other novelty and jive styles. A popular form is the Smooth Lindy, which is basically a Lindy with no kicking patterns or Charleston. East Coast swing, otherwise known as the Jitterbug is another type of swing dancing. It is more social and less acrobatic. Although this style of swing is what most people learn at first, it is not really a swing–era dance. (This dance is learned as, One and two, three and four, rock–step.) Most swing dance had an eight–count rhythm. (Counting to eight, with each beat equal to one step.) With the evolution of the 12–bar blues, however, the jitterbug lost two counts and became the dance of early rock–and–roll. It is taught as a swing dance, however, because it is much easier to grasp than the Lindy. This dance was not created until the 1950's. The version that is taught most often is done to fast big–band music and is also called East Coast Swing. Another type of swing is West Coast Swing. It is a six–count or eight–count dance where the man moves the woman in a straight line, the slot, while he steps out of the way, instead of the circular patterns of the Lindy Hop. The dance is also danced to much slower music than East Coast which allows for more time for intricate steps and synchronized movements between partners. • 69. Social Inequality In The Dance Industry Everyone experiences social inequality at least once in their lifetime, whether it is something small or something big it is still social inequality. Personally, I have experienced social inequality in the dance studio due to my physical appearance. About 3 years ago I experienced social inequality due to my physical appearance. I was quite short 3 years ago and this other girl was taller than me. We were at the same dance level and had about the same muscle mass as me, however, she was always placed in the front center of the stage and I was always placed at the back dark corner where no one is able to see me. This made me feel like I was a bad dancer because this has happened in every single dance we were in together which was about five. She was, also, a lot prettier than me and she knew it. Since she was always placed in the front she was quite stuck up and as a result, not many people at the dance studio liked her. This is an example of social inequality due to my physical appearance compared to others in the dance studio. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I went from being on the disadvantaged side to the advantaged side of social inequality and in some ways, it feels great but in other ways, I feel sorry for those still experiencing social inequality at the dance studio. I try not to be stuck up like that girl three years ago because I do not want people to hate me for being a good dancer. I cannot help that I am always placed in the front and I am too shy to speak up and say something about it and personally, I like being front and center now that I know what it feels ... The Performance Of The Dancer 's Body As An Agent The performance of the sabar in Senegal, and the performance of improvised social dancing in queer clubs in New York City, exemplify the dancer's body as an agent and protagonist in each dance form. For queer people, improvised social dancing allows them to experience an embodied confidence that is carried with them in their negotiation of life as a sexual minority. For Senegalese women, dancing in the sabar opens a gateway for them to celebrate their sexuality in a way that challenges the authority of the male gaze. In both social dances there is interaction between the dancer and the music. This interaction produces a level of agency, confidence, and power that is epitomized in their movement. The dancing of the Senegalese women in the sabar, manifests as an empowered agency over their own bodies. In the ethnography, Choreographies of African Identities, Francesca Castaldi explains that the gathering of women in the shape of a circle literally opens up a space filled with their expectations and intent...[t]hus women physically take over the public space of the city, and supported by the gewels ,... reconstitute it as a sabar dancing circle (80). Her rise to fame included her erotic dancing, her comedic expressions and her risqué sense of style. She was well known for her Danse Sauvage and her most famous Banana skirt dance. She was a unique artist that differed from the rest. With that being said, I would like to focus the main aspect of this paper on her originality of tackling racial stereotypes through performing, her unique sense of style as a world–famous entertainer, and most importantly her evolutionary banana skirt dance. She was an immediate sensation, because of her erotic dancing and sense of style. More particularly, Josephine Baker and her dance partner Joe Alex performed the Danse Sauvage which is a French saying for wild dance. This dance performance was only the beginning of her long, successful career as a performer. Josephine Baker's dance form was different from many other African American artists during that time era, which is why she was so heavily adored. On stage Josephine baker would dress in over–the–top outfits, most of which bared her almost nude.
