2. What is a reflective documentary?
It’s a style in which is usually associated with more experimental
documentaries.
At the simplest level the film may make no attempt to hide aspects of its
construction, e.g. showing camera men and workers in the background.
What you see is what you get.
In experimental documentaries, the viewer is often just as interested about
how the film is constructed as they are the actual content.
3. Nick Broomfield
Best known for his reflective style of documentary making.
He often films with minimal camera crew, most of the time just himself and
a single camera man, this makes the documentaries seem more personal.
He has been a great influence in the documentary world, as lots of film
makers have been inspired to do what they do because of his reflective
techniques.
The best known examples of his work are Kurt & Courtney and Biggie &
Tupac.

4. Louis Theroux
Another well known film maker that creates reflective documentaries.
Know for his controversial methods, as he presents in front of the camera
and is such a casual interviewer.
Sometimes he takes part in the activities that he is documenting on, so to
get an inside look, but he still remains slightly detached and impartial to
the topic at hand.
He tackles irregular cases such as prisoners, porn stars and prostitutes.
Examples of some of his pieces of work are “When Louis Met Jimmy Savile”,
“Louis and The Nazis” and most recently “Transgender Kids”

5. How reflective documentaries
engage their audience
The audience are able to become more aware of the problems at hand,
from seeing the problems that the film maker faces while the film is being
made.
These types of documentaries tend to be the most truthful, as they always
focus on realism and try to show things exactly how they happen.
These documentaries have very little, if any, editing and special effects on
them before being shown to the public.
However, as a film maker narrates over the documentary and addresses
the specifically, the viewers opinion can be easily swayed to that of the
film makers.
