1. Calculating the number of utterances
When dealing with dialogue, we want to capture the essence or important information
which is meaningful. For this particular video clips regarding classroom interaction, our group
only focus on meaningful sentences. Sentences from the transcription was acknowledge by their
type which are simple sentences, compound sentences, complex sentences and the last one is
compound complex sentences. After reading the transcription for quite many times, we started to
count the sentence. From our group reading, skimming and scanning for the sentences was done.
Our group found about 435 sentences which is viewed as meaningful utterances done by the
teacher and students during the 51 minutes classroom interaction.
