2. PAST SIMPLE TENSE - TO BE : WAS - WERE
WAS / WERE are used according to the subject
- I was - We were
- You were - You were (plural)
- He / She / It was - They were
NO AUXILIARY is necessary for negative and interrogative sentences.
- I wasn’t / Was I …? - We weren’t / Were we…?
- You weren’t / Were you…? (singular and plural)
- He / She / It wasn’t - Were They…?
Examples:
- I was born in London
- He wasn’t a good student
- They were good and friendly people
- Was she a nice girl?
- Were you a good student when you were young?
3. PAST SIMPLE TENSE
REGULAR VERBS : + -ED
* Regular Verbs: We add –ED to the verbs for affirmative
sentences
- walk → walked - try → tried
- stop → stopped - love → loved
*Regular Verbs: We use DIDN’T + infinitive for negative
sentences
- We walked → We didn’t walk
- He tried → He didn’t try
* Regular Verbs: We use DID + Subject + infinitive for
interrogative sentences
- We walked → Did we walk …?
- He stopped → Did he stop…?
4. PAST SIMPLE TENSE - IRREGULAR VERBS
Irregular verbs form PAST and PARTICIPLE in
different ways
- to go - went - gone
- to put - put - put
- to swim - swam - swum
We use DIDN’T + INFINITIVE for negative
sentences
- We went to the beach / we didn’t go to the beach.
- He swam in the lake / He didn’t swim in the lake.
We use DID + SUBJECT + INFINITIVE for
interrogative sentences
- We built our house / Did you build your house?
- It cost a lot / Did it cost a lot?
