Illiteracy In America
According to Bradbury, "There are worse crimes than burning books. One of them is not reading
them" ( Bradbury). The National center for education statistics express that the illiteracy rate in
Hoke County is 19% , which includes people who are not able to read or write over a third grade
level. The newspapers in Hoke County have been downgraded over the years so that every literacy
level is presented with the opportunity to read the newspapers. Reading connections advocates
that,more than 1,000,000 (approximately 22%) adults experience reading and writing difficulties in

Some educators believe that reading aloud to children is a waste of time in a literacy program.
Read–alouds are a step on the road of literacy that cannot be neglected, no matter how old or young;
no matter what language he or she speaks; no matter how gifted or disadvantaged a child might be
(Fox, 2013, p. 4). According to Fox (2013), "When a great story is read aloud, listeners discover that
vocabulary is easier to understand. The flow and grammar of language becomes more familiar" (p.
4). This paper will discuss the effects of language development when reading aloud to infants and
toddlers and how to create an effective read–aloud.

Interactive read–alouds are a helpful way to provide opportunities for meaningful, rich, and

In primary schools, literacy is taught through things such as Phonics. In 2012, The Department for
Education (DfE) introduced a phonics screening check for pupils at the end of year 1. The check
asks pupils to read 40 words, of which 20 are pseudo–words. This allows teachers to identify which
pupils have a genuine grasp of decoding and which pupils are in need of further support. "Since
2012, the proportion of pupils meeting the expected standard has increased from 58% to 74% in
2014". Literacy enables children at a young age to understand how the alphabet works and
concentrates on speaking and listening skills, phonological awareness and oral blending and
segmenting. Additional activities that can be done to help with literacy are drama, guided reading,
peer work and talking in groups. Children with good literacy skills are abler to take advantage of the
opportunities that they may come across as they would be literate in a subject area. A child should
have good word recognition and language comprehension in order to be successfully literate.

This paper explores related research in aspects of language acquisition, specifically, reading
instruction and its effect on students who live in low socioeconomic environments. We will review
the methods of explicit phonics and whole language to examine what, if any, is the more
advantageous method of reading instruction for students who live in poverty. The purpose of this
literature review is to investigate the impacts of specific reading instruction on the literacy
development of children and how socioeconomics restricts these impacts. The research reviewed
was collected from peer review journals using the Central Search feature on the UCO Chambers
Library website. The majority of the researcher's findings came from EBSCOhost Education
Research Complete and JSTOR: Journal Storage. Given the findings of this literature review,
research suggests that explicit phonics instruction, when embedded in a whole language classroom,
promotes growth in literacy skills among young children. Research suggests that multisensory
phonics, based on Orton–Gillingham Approach, promotes literacy growth for students who are at–

The United States is increasingly becoming a nation of nonreaders. In 2013, it was reported that 32
million adults, 14 percent of our population, could not read. Twenty–one percent of the adults that
same year read below a fifth grade level. Additionally, nineteen percent of the high school graduates

these parents do not encourage reading. According to the U.S Department of Education, when there
is a low amount of parent support at home the classroom reading score is below the national average
by 46 points. When there is a high amount of parental support at home the classroom reading score

low parental support come to school behind their classmates who experienced reading at a young

Literacy Reflection Paper
During this photovoice assignment, I became enlightened on the literary culture at the school in
which I am conducting my observation. I toured the school's hallways and my clinical supervisor's
classroom as if it were a museum deliberately designed for literacy. I closely examined many of the
school's bulletin boards, posters, bookshelves, and classrooms with the sole purpose of unearthing
the culture of literacy in the elementary school. The many steps I took to and fro each classroom and
hallway taking pictures of every literarily related item I could find were not in vain. In fact, walking
around the school and digitally capturing every bit of literacy culture allowed me to identify not
only the strengths and the weaknesses of the literacy customs incorporated by the school, but it also
provided me with literacy strategies I could integrate into my own lesson plan when I become an
educator.
The gallery walk I took throughout the school and my clinical supervisor's classroom provided me
with many pictures worth a thousand words; however, only six photos stood out to me: Jat, the Little
Blue Rat, Books Everywhere, Group Reading, Three a Day with ELA, Mr. Spaceman, and Feeling

My Life Of My Mother
Literacy has always been close to my identity as a person. My mother wanted the best for her
children, and therefore would sing and read to us as soon as we were born. She encouraged out love
of words and books by taking us to the library for reading time and always seemed to find the most
amazing books for us to explore. My mother is very musically gifted, so songs were part of our
daily routine. There are still little songs that pop into my head about daily tasks that she created to
help us learn and make work and learning fun. When I grew a bit older, around the age of four, my
mother formed a group with other women in our neighborhood to form a preschool. They used the
Joy School curriculum and took turns having all of us over to their homes so that we could learn and
play together. I remember there was lots of music, reading many books, playing all sorts of games,
and a yearly Christmas program. Around this time, I began to learn about phonics and loved figuring
out which letters made which sounds. My mother tells me that I liked to rhyme a lot as a little child
because I found it fun. She said she thinks this is when my love of poetry started to develop. As I

Explicit instruction is important in connecting to prior knowledge and skills when beginning a
learning sequence (Australian Curriculum and Reporting Authority, 2016). It helps to lay the
foundational areas of reading and literacy as a whole in the early years of schooling. Effective
reading instruction builds on what children already know, how students learn and on what degree of
support they need to become successful in reading/learn and apply new information (Archer, 2011,
p.18). Here the idea of scaffolding is evident where "the support provided by the teacher (or another

I do not recall much of my literacy experience. My parents were not big on reading. They relied on
the school to increase my knowledge of print. Yet, I do remember special moments spent with my

My Life Of My Mother
Literacy has always been close to my identity as a person. My mother wanted the best for her
children, and therefore would sing and read to us as soon as we were born. She encouraged out love
of words and books by taking us to the library for reading time and always seemed to find the most
amazing books for us to explore. My mother is very musically gifted, so songs were part of our
daily routine. There are still little songs that pop into my head about daily tasks that she created to
help us learn and make work and learning fun. When I grew a bit older, around the age of four, my
mother formed a group with other women in our neighborhood to form a preschool. They used the
Joy School curriculum and took turns having all of us over to their homes so that we could learn and

still have the book but now its dusty and covered in highlighter and writing. I first understood
reading was important when I had to take a reading test in elementary. I was told the test would
determine whether I would move on to the next grade level. That was when I realized I had to take

Literacy Reflection Paper
During this photovoice assignment, I became enlightened on the literary culture at the school in
which I am conducting my observation. I toured the school's hallways and my clinical supervisor's
classroom as if it were a museum deliberately designed for literacy. I closely examined many of the
school's bulletin boards, posters, bookshelves, and classrooms with the sole purpose of unearthing
the culture of literacy in the elementary school. The many steps I took to and fro each classroom and
hallway taking pictures of every literarily related item I could find were not in vain. In fact, walking
around the school and digitally capturing every bit of literacy culture allowed me to identify not
only the strengths and the weaknesses of the literacy customs incorporated by the school, but it also
provided me with literacy strategies I could integrate into my own lesson plan when I become an
educator.
The gallery walk I took throughout the school and my clinical supervisor's classroom provided me

Elementary school teachers are constantly looking for a way to do things better. How can I engage
my students in my instruction? How can I make their learning purposeful to their lives? How can I
be more efficient in my planning and effective in my teaching? The Daily 5, a reading instruction
program created by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser, claims to be the answers to these questions.
Boushey and Moser (2012) created the program after teaching and observing others' literacy blocks.
The program is said to "engage students, [and] also teach and promote self–independence on tasks"
so that the classroom teacher can attend to individual students' needs (LaShomb, 2011, p. 1).
Boushey and Moser (2006) claim that not only does the program allow students to become self–
sufficient learners, but it also engages them in meaningful literature daily.
Reviewers of the Daily 5, Turner, Hoeltzel, and Li (2010), outlined the principles of the program:
students independently select "good fit" books, instruction is taught in flexible small–groups
determined by students' reading goals, instruction is based on authentic assessments, and teachers
utilize whole–group, small–group, and one–to–one instruction to maximize learning. In addition to
effectively teaching literacy, benefits of the program include creating independence and ownership
in students, decreasing problem behaviors, and eliminating extra work for teachers and busy work

I have noticed students have a short concentration span (of approximately 4 or 5 minutes) when
doing academic activities. During math exercises, ELLs have also showed that it can be particularly
difficult to solve basic addition, subtraction and multiplication when compared to the other students
in class.
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to explore the factors that shape my students' attitudes towards literacy
and numeracy. I am especially interested in investigating home–school connections to explore the
influence of family and community literacy practices on my students' academic development.
Taking these factors into consideration, I want to see how an intervention based on the integration of
home–based skills and activities in the classroom affects the students' motivation when doing
academic activities. A specific intervention that can be applied includes having ELL students assist
in the designing of classroom activities based on their interests.

Literacy is a crucial part in our society these days. The advancements we see every day could not
happen without communication and literacy. Everyone learns how to communicate in our world in
different ways and for me, I find it starting for me with my siblings and continued plenty of ups and

Growing up with English not being my first language was difficult. My parents knew how to speak
it, but they still didn't know to how to pronounce or define some words. I knew how to speak
English very well, but reading was sometimes hard for me. In order for me to learn, my brother
would read bedtime stories, and I would follow along. From my princess books to me sitting down
with him while he read his Captain Underpants comics. Anywhere I went I would try to read
anything I laid eyes on. From hotel names to road signs to menus to anything that could help me
improve. Already having an older brother who knew how to read very well, I took advantage of that.
My brother would help me pronounce different words, tell me what they meant, and would applaud
me for pronouncing them right. He was the main reason why I loved reading so much; loved.

My Literacy Journey
Literacy plays a huge role in my daily life. Every single day I read and write. Whether it's writing an
email or reading a text message, class assignment, discussion board, etc. My literacy journey is
unique because I have had different experiences. As a result, this is how my literacy journey has let
me to be the reader that I am.
I define literacy as being able to express my thoughts and emotions. I know everyone has different
opinions and emotions. Therefore, everyone will write differently and read in a different pace. Also,
everyone likes different types of books, for example fiction or nonfiction. As a result, everyone's
literacy journey is unique. Everyone has a different definition when it comes to literacy which is
what makes it special. Some prefer to read and others prefer to write. It all depends on personal
preference. A book I clearly remember is the book I read in 6th grade. I saved up my lunch money to
buy it from the book fair. There was a lot of book I could not choose but my teacher helped me
picked one. The book was torn on the edges. It had an off–white cover with faded writing. I
remember it smelling like my pumpkin spice candle I had in my room. I also remember the book
being small and easy to carry. I loved the size of it because I could take it anywhere to read. There
were times where I would stay in the classroom instead of going out to play with my classmates. I
still have the book but now its dusty and covered in highlighter and writing. I first understood
reading was important when I had to take a reading test in elementary. I was told the test would
determine whether I would move on to the next grade level. That was when I realized I had to take
reading important. I didn't like having to read 4 different stories, but I knew I had to try my best to
pass. The test results took forever to come in which made it even scarier. Once my teacher told me I
had passed I felt a huge relief. Ever since I have never doubted the importance of reading. Alexie
wrote "I read with equal parts joy and desperation." (130) This quote had an impact on me because I

necessity when enquiring about the possibility of integrating critical thinking in English Language
Teaching. This chapter is devoted to the investigation of the hypothesis of the study, whether critical
thinking could be incorporated in English Language Teaching. This chapter is undertaken with this
spirit, we will start our investigation by introducing the population of the study. Then, we describe,
analyze and interpret the questionnaires results. It will help us confirm or disconfirm our hypotheses
about possible correlation between critical thinking and language teaching. We provide two sections,
first, we deal with the students' questionnaire followed by its analysis, and then, we will move to do
