Assure Method
For this assignment, the rest of the class and I were asked to read about the ASSURE Method
and then choose one out of three hypothetical situations and apply the ASSURE Method. The
ASSURE Method was based on Gagne’s Events of Instruction and it is helpful for designing
courses using various media. The lesson plan that I chose to design was plan #2 – teaching
holiday traditions to 4th graders.
The A in ASSURE stands for analyzing the learners. This means the teacher should study the
students’ general character, learning style, and any other specific entry competencies. In my
classroom, I have 20 students total. 11 of these students are boys, leaving the other 9 girls. I also
have 2 Muslim, 3 Jewish, and 2 African American students. I am assuming the remaing 13 are
Caucasian, and none of them having any exceptionalities that require individual care.
The first S stands for stating objectives. My objective is as follows:
The 4th grade class will know and appreciate five different holidays that are observed around the
world. I will divide the class into 5 groups of 4 and assign each group a holiday. The holidays
include 4th of July, Hanukkah, Chinese New Year, Day of the Dead, and Ramadan. Each group
will make a video that represents and explains the holidays and their affiliated traditions. After
each video is showed, the class will have the opportunity to express their thoughts and share how
they celebrate these holidays, if they do at all. These presentations should only take 2 days. After
each group has presented, students will be able to recite back the information they learned with
80% accuracy.
The next S stands for selecting methods, media, and materials. First, it is important to
understand why I chose the holidays that I did. I wanted to pick holidays that every student in my
class could relate to, and I feel like I successfully achieved that. Also, kids are very much so into
technology these days so making a video to act out / explain each holiday should really be fun
for them, and not something that they dread doing.
The U stands for utilizing media and materials. As a teacher, I am going to thoroughly research
each of these holidays so I can know if the students have correctly explained them. Also, once
each group has presented their video, I hope to elaborate on some things that they may have left
out or not had time to mention.
R in ASSURE stands for requiring learner participation. I plan to do follow up assignments that
go along with this lesson plan so students can continue to process the important information.
Following the days of the video presentations, I will review what we have learned about each
holiday, while bringing in different artifacts that relate to them. For example, one day I will bring
in a real menorah so students can actually see one in person. Another day, or the same day, I will
bring in tradition 4th of July food (cookout type food), so students can enjoy what they are
learning while having a meal as well. Also, I plan on touching on many other holidays here and
there so the students can have a well-rounded lesson.
The final letter, E, stands for evaluating and revising. This essentially means assessing the
learner and the media methods before, during, and after, instruction. As a teacher, I should be
prepared to alter my lesson plan as soon as I see something isn’t going the way I had anticipated.
For example, if the class is not comfortable making videos, it is my duty to think on my toes for
an alternate way of providing the information while still using the ASSURE Method.
Reflection
I am not going to lie, when I first heard about this assignment, I was a little nervous about
creating a lesson plan, even if it was a hypothetical situation. As a teacher, I will obviously be
creating a lot of lessons plans, and I was nervous that I would not enjoy creating this first one.
However, after reading about the ASSURE Method during the first week of class, I became less
nervous because everything was broken down and easy to comprehend. I really enjoyed thinking
outside of the box and coming up with a lesson plan that I know I would have enjoyed as a
student. I think my biggest struggle in this class won’t so much the assignments, but more so
operating LiveText and SlideShare. As each week passes, I hope to become more acquainted
with the programs and less nervous about each upcoming assignment.

  • 1. Assure Method For this assignment, the rest of the class and I were asked to read about the ASSURE Method and then choose one out of three hypothetical situations and apply the ASSURE Method. The ASSURE Method was based on Gagne’s Events of Instruction and it is helpful for designing courses using various media. The lesson plan that I chose to design was plan #2 – teaching holiday traditions to 4th graders. The A in ASSURE stands for analyzing the learners. This means the teacher should study the students’ general character, learning style, and any other specific entry competencies. In my classroom, I have 20 students total. 11 of these students are boys, leaving the other 9 girls. I also have 2 Muslim, 3 Jewish, and 2 African American students. I am assuming the remaing 13 are Caucasian, and none of them having any exceptionalities that require individual care. The first S stands for stating objectives. My objective is as follows: The 4th grade class will know and appreciate five different holidays that are observed around the world. I will divide the class into 5 groups of 4 and assign each group a holiday. The holidays include 4th of July, Hanukkah, Chinese New Year, Day of the Dead, and Ramadan. Each group will make a video that represents and explains the holidays and their affiliated traditions. After each video is showed, the class will have the opportunity to express their thoughts and share how they celebrate these holidays, if they do at all. These presentations should only take 2 days. After each group has presented, students will be able to recite back the information they learned with 80% accuracy. The next S stands for selecting methods, media, and materials. First, it is important to understand why I chose the holidays that I did. I wanted to pick holidays that every student in my class could relate to, and I feel like I successfully achieved that. Also, kids are very much so into technology these days so making a video to act out / explain each holiday should really be fun for them, and not something that they dread doing. The U stands for utilizing media and materials. As a teacher, I am going to thoroughly research each of these holidays so I can know if the students have correctly explained them. Also, once each group has presented their video, I hope to elaborate on some things that they may have left out or not had time to mention. R in ASSURE stands for requiring learner participation. I plan to do follow up assignments that go along with this lesson plan so students can continue to process the important information. Following the days of the video presentations, I will review what we have learned about each holiday, while bringing in different artifacts that relate to them. For example, one day I will bring
  • 2. in a real menorah so students can actually see one in person. Another day, or the same day, I will bring in tradition 4th of July food (cookout type food), so students can enjoy what they are learning while having a meal as well. Also, I plan on touching on many other holidays here and there so the students can have a well-rounded lesson. The final letter, E, stands for evaluating and revising. This essentially means assessing the learner and the media methods before, during, and after, instruction. As a teacher, I should be prepared to alter my lesson plan as soon as I see something isn’t going the way I had anticipated. For example, if the class is not comfortable making videos, it is my duty to think on my toes for an alternate way of providing the information while still using the ASSURE Method. Reflection I am not going to lie, when I first heard about this assignment, I was a little nervous about creating a lesson plan, even if it was a hypothetical situation. As a teacher, I will obviously be creating a lot of lessons plans, and I was nervous that I would not enjoy creating this first one. However, after reading about the ASSURE Method during the first week of class, I became less nervous because everything was broken down and easy to comprehend. I really enjoyed thinking outside of the box and coming up with a lesson plan that I know I would have enjoyed as a student. I think my biggest struggle in this class won’t so much the assignments, but more so operating LiveText and SlideShare. As each week passes, I hope to become more acquainted with the programs and less nervous about each upcoming assignment.
