4. Inverter:
• An inverter or a power inverter is an electric/electronic device that
converts the direct current (DC) to alternating values of current (AC). The
inverter is only responsible to convert the DC signals from the battery to
output AC voltage required to operate different electronic appliances,
while the power in the circuit is provided by the DC source/Battery.
• A typical inverter for home use should have a stable DC power source so
as to provide enough current to fulfill the power demand of the system.
5. Block Diagram:
The DC power supplied by the battery is converted to AC by the MOSFET Driver
which is then transformed to a higher value with the help of step-up transformer
providing the required output.
6. Components Required
• IC CD4047
• IRF540 MOSFET x 2
• Resistors (100K, 390K, 330Ω, 820Ω, 220ΩX2)
• Diode 1N4007
• LED
• Capacitor (2200µF, 0.01µF, 0.1µF, 2.2µF)
• 12V rechargeable battery
• Step Up Transformer (12V primary to 230V Secondary)
9. Working
• The IC CD4047 works as an astable multivibrator here and produces pulse trains with
180 degree out of phase of 0.020seconds at the pin 10 and 11.
• The Pin 10 is connected to the gate of the MOSFET1 and 11 is connected to gate of
MOSFET 2 through a resistor which prevents the loading of the IC.
• When the output from the pin 10 is HIGH, the first transistor conducts and current flows
through the upper primary side of the transformer resulting in the positive half cycle of
the output AC current while the second transistor is responsible for the negative half
cycle when the current conducts through the negative half cycle in the lower half region
of the primary side of the transformer which is tapped centrally.
10. Continue:
• The step-up transformer increases the output voltage current.
• The switching between the two MOSFETs can cause the dissipation of heat
which can be reduced by using heat sinks.
15. Limitations:
This inverter made through the use of this circuit is of low grade quality as
the output frequency varies from the normal AC mains (not purely sine
wave) because of which it can not be used for all electric appliances like TV,
radio, etc.
