Basic concepts in consumer
behavior
 The study of human behavior is important as
there is a difference in the behavior of
individuals, as a result of different countries,
regions, races, customs, traditions, laws,
civilizations and other factors.
 The study of consumer behavior is a special
case or an integral part of the study of general
human behavior.
 The study of consumer behavior is concerned
with the activities and behaviors provided by
the consumer and directly related to satisfying
his needs and desires which thus govern the
consumption process.
Consumer Behavior can be
defined as:
 A set of actions issued by individuals related
to the purchase and use of economic goods
and services, including the decision-making
process that precedes and determines these
actions.
 This definition includes the following three
assumptions that can be explained as
follows:
 1. Collection of actions issued by individuals
 2 - the purchase of economic goods and
services.
 3 - the decision-making process that
Importance of studying
Consumer Behavior
 The study of consumer behavior has
attracted the attention of many
individuals, especially consumers and
marketing men. The benefits of the
consumer behavior study for each party
can be explained as follows:
 1.The importance of studying consumer
behavior for consumers:
 Helps consumers to understand the
process of buying and consuming goods
and services, especially in knowing what
to buy, why and how to get it
 The importance of studying the behavior of the
consumer for the officials of institutions:
 The study of consumer behavior helps
institutional officials in the following fields:
 1.Discover the appropriate marketing
opportunities.
 2.Market division.
 3. Competitive location design for the
organization's goods.
Types of Consumer Behavior
 Consumer behavior describes us different
types of consumers
 1.Individual or final consumer
 Who searches for a commodity or service
and purchases it for his own or family use.
 2. Industrial consumer
 Which includes all private and public
institutions, where these institutions
research and purchase goods, materials or
equipment that enable them to implement
the objectives set out in their plans or
strategies
Characteristics of Consumer
Behavior All opinion makers agree on the general
characteristics of Consumer behavior :
 Consumer behavior is behavior motivated by
motives and may be the outcome of several motives.
 Consumer behavior is purposeful behavior, that is, it
is directed to achieve a particular goal or objectives.
 Consumer behavior is flexible and varied behavior,
which means that it changes according to the
situations that individual faces.
 Often The unconscious plays an important role in
determining consumer behavior. In many cases, the
individual can not determine the reasons for the
behavior.
 Consumer behavior is a continuous process ,there
are no breaks that determine the beginning and end
