This document summarizes how a media presentation follows, develops, and challenges conventions of real media. It follows character archetypes but leaves out the hero. It follows Todorov's narrative theory in chronological order but develops it by adding a disequilibrium stage at the start. It follows Barthes' theory using psychological elements to make the viewer question elements. It also follows Strauss' theory using binary opposites. Feedback helped refine the story, poster, and addition of sound effects. Photoshop, Weebly, Premiere Pro, camera, and audio controls were used in construction, research, planning and evaluation.
2. In what ways does your media product use ,develop
or challenge forms and conventions of real media
products ?
Follow & challenge prop’s character theory by using some of the character archetypes he
suggested. The villain(the stalker) and the princess/damsel(abi and Emelia) we also
challenge his theory by leaving out the main archetype of his theory the hero.
Follow and develop todorov’s narrative theory in our trailer we follow the theory in
chronological order for example the two girls talking at the start (equilibrium)seeing the
stalker outside her window (force) running and train scene (disequilibrium). We develop
this theory by adding on a stage to the narrative theory placing disequilibrium at the
start too of the feature length film this would be done to grab the audience's attention I
got this idea from the film kick ass where the climax is shown at the start of the film.
Follows bathes theory (enigma code) we use psychologically elements that make the viewer
think is the stalker real or not with the use of text inserts like is it all in her head and
when it flashes from the face to the skull it adds another question to think about is he
dead or alive.
We follow Strauss’ theory in a way using the binary opposites like life and death and also
sanity and insanity.
Used typical location, lighting and camera angles associated with horror films.
Used typical sounds and music associated in horror films.
3. How effective is the combination of your
main product and ancillary texts?
All of our media products use the same colour scheme of red white and black
we used this because these are the colours that are used in the posters
and other advertising of the horror genre
Two products include the production logo reinforcing the brand
We used the same font for the title on all three products
We also used similar images of the stalker to create a uniform identity for the
film
4. What have you learned from your
audience feedback ?
The flashing between the stalkers face and the skull this idea really added to
our trailer and I think it is one of the best elements in our production
We got some valuable feedback when we presented our storyboard so we
knew we had to make our story more clear
The feedback we got on the poster allowed us to refine it so that poster
looked more professional for example adding an age rating
It was suggested that we should add sound effects because it would really add
to the background music
The placement of the text between scenes was a very important decision
because it can separate the action and can give different mood about the
scene
5. How did you use media technologies in the
construction and research and planning and
evaluation stages ?
Photoshop – image manipulation, filter tools and colour correction (poster and
magazine)
Weebly – planning and research
Adobe premiere pro- importing, exporting, transitions, effects etc
Filming – hd camera, iPhone tripod
Audio controls – level varitations
