common, if not the most commonly consumed fruits due to their taste, but also their relatively
inexpensive price. Real issues arise when people begin to question why a tropical fruit, grown
thousands of miles away, can be purchased on the counter of a gas station for 69 cents. There is a
real environmental and socio–economic cost associated with the Banana that is not factored in to the
purchase price. World systems theory most closely aligns itself to the banana industry because of the
hierarchy between producer and consumer that is required for Bananas to be so available at such an
inexpensive price. Bananas were first grown for cultivation in South East Asia. The biggest producer
then, and still to this day is India. Arab traders who inhabited most of the Middle East region, began

Bananas and plantains (Musa spp.) are one of the major staple foods in the world. In 2006 the
estimated world production of bananas was 80.6 million tons while 16.8 tons were traded (Cohen,
2011). Although bananas are common today, the origins of the banana are complex and occurred
over thousands of years during multiple stages. Archeologists focused on the Kuk Valley of New
Guininea, the area where the domestication of bananas supposedly took place around 8,000 BCE
(Before Common Era) (Bot, 2007). The study of banana history has been difficult because banana
pollen and seeds were rare or absent at archaeological sites. It wasn't until recent technologies and
the use of multi–disciplinary research that we could gain a better understanding. Genetics and
linguistic studies also help in understanding the banana origin (Hirst, 2015). Diploid and triploid
forms of bananas have been identified and their distribution throughout the world is a key piece of
evidence in unlocking the truth about banana domestication.

On average, a human being consumes about 3 meals a day. While many people eat whatever they
please, there are many individuals who choose to live and maintain a healthy life style. While almost
any type of food is available in our stores and markets here in the U.S., this does not mean much of
produce we consume is actually grown here. Especially when it comes to the fruits and vegetables
we consume every day, many of them are grown elsewhere. While we import much of our fresh
produce, many people fail to see the complications these countries and farmers go through on a
daily basis to get us these crops we need. A fruit like bananas for instance has more of a history than
many people could even imagine. I'm here to discuss the history of this naturally consumed fruit as
well as speak about the countless labor and environmental issues that have taken place.
Without probably realizing it, bananas are the most consumed fruits of the United States. India
stands as the world's largest producer of fresh bananas, but when it comes to exporting, the five
leading banana–exporting countries in 2009 were Ecuador, Colombia, the Philippines, Costa Rica,
and Guatemala. In 2012, the U.S. imported 9,589 million pounds of bananas, more than 95 percent

The banana industry has been met with much hardship since its establishment, and Colombia is no
stranger to those hardships. The total production in Colombia is estimated at 95 million boxes a
year, generating around 700 million dollars in 2012. Banana represents 3.0% of Colombia 's total
exports and 6.0% of non–traditional exports, which generates 0.4% of the country 's Gross Domestic
Product (GDP). Colombian banana exporters are the third biggest in Latin America. In 2009,
24.21% of the production was sent to the United States and Canada, 62.26% to the European Union
and 13.55% to other countries. The production of export bananas takes place in two different:
Urabá, and Santa Marta. Between 2009 and 2010, Colombia was reported as the country with the
third highest Fairtrade income, with approximately $62 million USD. In order to maintain a high
form of production, banana farmers would often neglect important matters such as environmental
standards and human working conditions as the path to a cleaner farming and safer working

Banana is a commodity that is widely used worldwide. Bananas are neither too extravagant, nor too
expensive meaning that anyone and any level of socio–economic status can purchase them, from the
very poor to the very wealthy. Bananas can be found at any brand name store, farmers market, or
flea market. Bananas are commodities that are highly valued, traded, and desired. The success of the
banana can be attributed to the fact that it can be grown and harvested all year long in different parts
of the world. The success lies in the mass production, distribution and consumption of these goods.
However, there is an ugly reality people are exploited, countries and people are complete dependent
economically on bananas, and countries and terrain are destroyed by those corporations that benefit
the most from the distribution of bananas.
Bananas are generally produced in tropical locations. They are grown in parts of South and Central
America. The top producers of bananas are Costa Rica, The Caribbean, Colombia, and the
Philippines. A large portion of these plantains are also produced in different parts of Africa. The
biggest exporter of bananas is Ecuador. Bananas are a very pertinent crop to human survival and
