1. Faith in Christ Jesus:
2 Timothy 1:12 defines FAITH as knowing the trustworthy character and
motives of Jesus, and being confident in His limitless promise-keeping
ability, and consequently committing yourself entirely to His keeping. We
are studying the Gospel of John, answering these questions: 1) What is
revealed of Jesus’ character, motives, and abilities? 2) What is indicated that
you could confidently commit to Jesus’?
THE LORD'S PRAYER!
John 17:1-5
This prayer progresses from Christ's consecration of Himself (v.1-5), through
consecration of His Disciples (v.6-19), to the consecration of the work and fruit
of His Disciples (20-26).
Consecration (exampled, but not written here) is an absolute commitment,
devotion, and exclusive concentration of all resources and life to a single
purpose. We can see Jesus focusing on glorifying the Father, giving eternal life
to His followers, and returning to the glory He had before His humiliation.
GLORY
We normally think of “glory” as either intense brightness around God, or
as intense popularity and praise surrounding Hollywood stardom! It is to
cause the dignity, excellence and worth of a person to become acknowledged,
celebrated, honored, renowned, and praised! John 3:16 in BOLD PRINT!
POWER
Power may be either strength or authority. Authority is greater, since it
commands and controls strength and ability. Jesus has authority over all
humanity and life and death. John 17:2 is a “so that” statement! Jesus must
be glorified (as defined previously) SO THAT He may g
ive eternal life to His followers.
ETERNAL LIFE
We think of “eternal life” as duration only. Jesus defines it as KNOWING
the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom God sent! It is to perceive,
recognize, become acquainted with, and understand God! This LIFE is as
immeasurable as God Himself! (Ephesians 1:18, 3:8, in context.)
FINISHED WORK
His Work is John 5:30, Luke 19:10, … and the entire book of Hebrews! It
is mentally stunning to realize Who He Is and What He Did as revealed
throughout that book!
He is God, Hb. 1.
Made Himself able to die so we could live, Hb.2.
Declares unbelief as THE sin that kills, Hb.3.
He IS the REST we seek, Hb.4.
He authored eternal salvation, Hb.5.
He is the entrance to God's presence, made us accepted, Hb.6.
His sacrifice actually made us perfect, Hb.7.
… Perhaps our next study should be in Hebrews...
Are you consecrated to Christ?
