John 17 6 19
1. Faith in Christ Jesus:
2 Timothy 1:12 defines FAITH as knowing the trustworthy character and
motives of Jesus, and being confident in His limitless promise-keeping
ability, and consequently committing yourself entirely to His keeping. We
are studying the Gospel of John, answering these questions: 1) What is
revealed of Jesus’ character, motives, and abilities? 2) What is indicated that
you could confidently commit to Jesus’?
THE LORD'S PRAYER!
John 17:6-19
This prayer progresses from Christ's consecration of Himself (v.1-5), through
consecration of His Disciples (v.6-19), to the consecration of the work and fruit
of His Disciples (20-26).
“Manifested Thy Name” ...the unknown is made known, invisible made
visible, Who and What God is has become plainly recognizable and
understandable in and through The Son of God! The human imagination has
created many conflicting ideas about God (Romans 1:18-25). Our “unhappy
divisions” (such as Denominations) arising from wilfulness and unwillingness
to bear slight differences among ourselves, are so contrary to the unity in
holiness and love (Philippians 2:1-11) of The Lord's Prayer, as to be traceable
only to the heathen element remaining in our churches.
They have received, known, and believed in verse 8. Lambano.
Ginosko. Pisteuo. They received and took as their own, and will not let go of,
the words Christ gave them. They knew, perceived, understood, that Christ
came out from within, God. (This is different from being sent by God, as it
clearly indicates identity with God!) They were confidently persuaded that God
sent (apostello) Christ, that everything Christ said and did was directly
authorized and empowered and directed by God! These are our own vital
foundations!
They were being left behind in a world of sin, evil, temptation, and sorrow!
“Holy Father, Keep Them, (v.11) from the evil (v.15) was Jesus'
intercession for them! 1 Chronicles 4:10, Psalm 19:11-14, Luke 11:4, 2 Peter
2:9, 1 Corinthians 10:13, Jude 24. Though we MUST participate by consecrating
ourselves to God (Romans 6:11-23), it is ONLY by God's deliverance, God's
keeping, and God's prevention, that we are empowered to overcome
temptation and sin and evil and sorrow!
How? Verse 17 declares that TRUTH sanctifies us, and that God's Word is
that truth!
Do you comprehend the uniquely prominent functions of God's Word? Your
ability to trust (rest) in God, ability to trust (commit to) in God, ability to trust
(obey) God, ability to trust (remain faithful to) in God, is directly affected by
you receiving, knowing, and believing the Word of God!
My personal opinion is that many Christians do not want every sin gone,
but do want every sorrow gone! God's Word cannot take out one and leave the
other! So, they choose to leave off God's Word and keep both kinds of
problems!
