Hodkinson my unexpected journey
1. My Unexpected Journey

After living in New York City for 30 years I had the opportunity to move back out
to Long Island and live on a House Barge. I began looking for a teaching
Position with no luck - but as fate would have it I was offered a position as
Program Coordinator for a group of Developmentally Disabled Adults. Now this
was a population I had not worked with but the powers that be thought that my
work with people with Traumatic brain injuries as well as my artistic background
would be a good fit for the position.
2. Thinking of what I could bring to the table with an Arts background I began
a series of art classes which have transitioned into a staple of not only my
sight but the inclusion of other IGHL Day Habilitation programs around
Suffolk County.
3. This has culminated in the opening of the IGHL ARTIST
EXHIBTION CENTER with rotating exhibitions every three
months allowing the work of these talented
artists to be shown and sold.

5. The mission of the IGHL Artist Exhibition Center (AEC) is to provide a
creative platform in which to allow people with developmental disabilities the
chance to display the art work they create.
It is also an opportunity to raise awareness in education, community and
business to step beyond the stereotypical limitations which are often placed
upon people in this population.
We hope that by visiting the IGHL Artist Exhibition Center you experience
the artistic visions of these artists and realize that the only limits they have are
the ones placed upon them.
6. With techniques such as wheelchair painting, poncho
painting and broom painting It is my hope to integrate
emerging technologies in to the program allowing them to
create and learn to have choices and make decisions that
will allow this population to create “Outside the Box.”
