In what ways does your media
product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions
of real media products?

Jack Melton
A convention that we utilized in our music
video was the character roles of our characters
in the narrative with the boy and girl and the
whole idea of the guy trying to get the girl is a
very common tool that many music videos use
in our sub-genre.
These here are all example of
mainstream pop solo male artist music
videos that use this boy trying to get girl
character roles that we use.
Here we can see examples of us using
this convention of the character roles
of the boy and girl with the boy trying
to get his dream girl.

The pop up texts that we put in during the
editing portion of our video creation was a
convention that we tried to develop as we saw
it is seen in music videos for the communication
and texting of the girl but we tried to develop
this idea by showing the texts and having them
pop up on the screen to see the conversation
that they were happening and to provide an
almost narrative enigma for what was going to
happen when they met up.
Here you can see examples in real
music videos of the convention
where they use this idea of texting or
communicating with the girl who the
guy is trying to get that we
developed to see the texts and have
them pop up.
These were all videos that
we took inspiration from to
develop this convention of
our pop up texts in the
video.

in our music video was the type
of camera shots that are typically
used.

Tom Macklin
The artists smart look makes him appealing to older
audiences as well to younger audiences. This type of
costume is modified to be the ideal man.
The costume of our artist is very conventual
to our genre of music of light pop.
The fedora hat is used a lot in
our advertising and is utilized as
the artists USP.
The artist is dressed in a shirt
and blazer to make him look
smart and professional, which
is used a lot for this kind
of genre of pop music.
The overall colour of
the uniform is blue, this overall
colour becomes a USP.
This type of costume is used a lot for this type of genre,
however artists do go against the convention sometimes:
However the convention works well for us as it is a
low paced song, therefore the smart costume allows for.
Here Bruno mars is going with the
convention, wearing a fedora hat with a
blazer around his shirt.
Here Bruno Mars is going against
the convention, as his songs differ from hip
hop to light pop.
Pharrell Williams goes against the
conventions of his pop music,
however he always keeps his USP
of the bowler hat
In our video the couple does a variety of cute activity's
together, this uses the conventions from the genre for
activity's such as the photo booth, throwing stones by the
river, throwing snow etc.. We use this convention to help the
audience build a understanding of the two characters slowly
getting closer.
This is similar to Tayler swifts video 'Blank space', as we see the
two characters doing multiple activity's together to represent
the relationship between them growing stronger. These activities
include horse riding, picnics, painting and riding bicycles.
These conventions are commonly used in music videos like this
as it represents the meaing of the song being between the
relationship between two people.
Having performance shots of the artist is a commonly used convention for this genre of music, this is purely because it is a
simple way to promote the artist in his videos. We show the artist in a variety of locations in a slightly different costumes,
this makes the video more interesting for the audience and shows our artists in a variety of different clothing to help
promote our artist more (different coloured shirts).
It is very common for artists like Shawn Mendes to have a performance in their music video, In this example Mendes is
performing in a large stadium. This convention is used to highlight the artist and to also give a subtle advertisement for
what the audience can expect if they come
to one of his concerts. The interval clips of
Mendes singing also helps market the
video, as the main selling focus of the video
is Mendes himself.
Some artists such as Anne-Marie have dance performance in there videos,
this shows off there dancing ability and what the audience can expect to see
if they see one of her shows.

• In our music video the two narrative characters are seen in a variety
of different settings together, these settings include various scenic
Parks, Rivers and actual houses and streets in an urban
style environment. This is conventional because these places are
stereotypically romantic places, places you would take someone on a
date to.
• We gained inspiration in terms of the activity ideas from these videos,
not the activities that they used but the ideas from them.

• For the narrative section of our video, we had the two characters
meet Way characters meet with the dog in the park.
• This is conventional because it is a stereotypical first date interaction
as animals are often used in films and real life to attract dates.
• Animals are an easy and low cost way of setting up a date and
showing emotion.
• It’s a very common convention within films and tv and has romantic
connotations.

• Our video follows the convention of the lead narrative male
finally "Getting the girl", this is a convention in a lot of music
genres but it fits very specifically with our genre. The song being
a love song is another reason that we have followed this
convention.
• It follows this convention from the lead male meeting the
female and starting to fall for her and they develop a
relationship by the end of the narrative closure.
• We gained some inspiration from these videos.

Olly Murs- Dance with me Tonight
Olly Murs develops this convention of using the artist in the narrative by using himself as the actor. Olly Murs is
one of the few artist to not use actors for some of his music videos. Having Olly Murs in the video narrative,
creates a very good image for him because it portrays his personality in a very playful light and very cheeky which
is him in real life as well

How do we develop the convention of the use of
the artist in the narrative of our music video?

• We decided to develop this convention due to the few amount of
videos that do not use the artist in their narrative. We decided to
use this because most mainstream artist don't really show a more
connective side to them and we wanted to develop this idea by
adding him in
• We decided to develop this use this to show that the artist in the
performance and narrative is an ordinary guy who’s openly in
relationships rather than hiding them like some celebrity
artist.
• We developed this more because we wanted this to connect
with our target audience to show that fame shouldn't affect your
love life.
• Our artist is portrayed in a good light through this way because
it shows how he is in real life and on the music scene. This is
good for the target audience because it gives a closer
connection to the artist

How do we use the convention of the use of
a linear narrative in our music video
• For the convention linear narrative, we decided to
use this because it fit our idea very well and it suited
our genre well. Our genre was love pop music.
• The main purpose for going linear was to create narrative
enigmas for our audience and for them to experience the artist
love story first hand from start to end
• We decided to go linear because we wanted to tell a
personal story and we thought that to use the
standard linear narrative would fit perfectly because
having in nonlinear it wouldn't of made sense.
• Many other music videos use the linear story line as well to
show the progression of whatever they are trying to show, in
this case a love story.

In our video the couple does a variety of cute activity's together, this uses the conventions from the genre for activity's such as the photo booth, throwing stones by the river, throwing snow etc.. We use this convention to help the audience build a understanding of the two characters slowly getting closer. This is similar to Tayler swifts video 'Blank space', as we see the two characters doing multiple activity's together to represent the relationship between them growing stronger. These activities include horse riding, picnics, painting and riding bicycles. These conventions are commonly used in music videos like this as it represents the meaing of the song being between the relationship between two people.
  • 7. Having performance shots of the artist is a commonly used convention for this genre of music, this is purely because it is a simple way to promote the artist in his videos. We show the artist in a variety of locations in a slightly different costumes, this makes the video more interesting for the audience and shows our artists in a variety of different clothing to help promote our artist more (different coloured shirts). It is very common for artists like Shawn Mendes to have a performance in their music video, In this example Mendes is performing in a large stadium. This convention is used to highlight the artist and to also give a subtle advertisement for what the audience can expect if they come to one of his concerts. The interval clips of Mendes singing also helps market the video, as the main selling focus of the video is Mendes himself. Some artists such as Anne-Marie have dance performance in there videos, this shows off there dancing ability and what the audience can expect to see if they see one of her shows.

Toby Prichard • In our music video the two narrative characters are seen in a variety of different settings together, these settings include various scenic Parks, Rivers and actual houses and streets in an urban style environment. This is conventional because these places are stereotypically romantic places, places you would take someone on a date to. • We gained inspiration in terms of the activity ideas from these videos, not the activities that they used but the ideas from them.

Toby Prichard • For the narrative section of our video, we had the two characters meet Way characters meet with the dog in the park. • This is conventional because it is a stereotypical first date interaction as animals are often used in films and real life to attract dates. • Animals are an easy and low cost way of setting up a date and showing emotion. • It’s a very common convention within films and tv and has romantic connotations.

Toby Prichard • Our video follows the convention of the lead narrative male finally "Getting the girl", this is a convention in a lot of music genres but it fits very specifically with our genre. The song being a love song is another reason that we have followed this convention. • It follows this convention from the lead male meeting the female and starting to fall for her and they develop a relationship by the end of the narrative closure. • We gained some inspiration from these videos.
  • 11. Ihab Saeed Olly Murs- Dance with me Tonight Olly Murs develops this convention of using the artist in the narrative by using himself as the actor. Olly Murs is one of the few artist to not use actors for some of his music videos. Having Olly Murs in the video narrative, creates a very good image for him because it portrays his personality in a very playful light and very cheeky which is him in real life as well Examples of music videos that develop the convention

Ihab Saeed • We decided to develop this convention due to the few amount of videos that do not use the artist in their narrative. We decided to use this because most mainstream artist don't really show a more connective side to them and we wanted to develop this idea by adding him in • We decided to develop this use this to show that the artist in the performance and narrative is an ordinary guy who’s openly in relationships rather than hiding them like some celebrity artist. • We developed this more because we wanted this to connect with our target audience to show that fame shouldn't affect your love life. • Our artist is portrayed in a good light through this way because it shows how he is in real life and on the music scene. This is good for the target audience because it gives a closer connection to the artist

Ihab Saeed How do we use the convention of the use of a linear narrative in our music video • For the convention linear narrative, we decided to use this because it fit our idea very well and it suited our genre well. Our genre was love pop music. • The main purpose for going linear was to create narrative enigmas for our audience and for them to experience the artist love story first hand from start to end • We decided to go linear because we wanted to tell a personal story and we thought that to use the standard linear narrative would fit perfectly because having in nonlinear it wouldn't of made sense. • Many other music videos use the linear story line as well to show the progression of whatever they are trying to show, in this case a love story.
