Interleukin-6 plays a protective role in cisplatin-induced acute renal failure through upregulation of anti-oxidative stress factors. The researchers conducted experiments using IL-6 knockout mice to simulate the human condition. They found that lack of IL-6 led to increased lipid peroxidation, showing that IL-6 prevents progression of acute renal failure by reducing oxidative stress. The findings suggest IL-6 promotes protective activities in the kidneys and applying this knowledge could help clinical practice.
