"Where I Lived, and What I lived For" Henry David Thoreau
Questions on Rhetoric and style
1. In the first paragraph, what does Thoreau declare as his higher purpose?
I believe that Thoreau sees his higher purpose in life as to live life naturally, to get every breathe out
of it, to live truly and happily and understand how it really is that life works. One would say
Thoreau focuses on "Spartan–like" lifestyle, mentioned by the author in paragraph 1, however, later
on the author, Thoreau mentions God and how one should "glorify and enjoy him forever". I believe
that the author is contradicting himself starting from paragraph 1. The main purpose in authors life is
to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author is viewed as if he is unsure of his own ideas. The attitude of the text, whenever the
author asks rhetorical questions is interrogative. Another example of a repetition in the specific
writing can be seen in paragraph 6. When the author constantly repeats "let" or "let us". By using
these repetitions the author is appealing to pathos by involving the audience into the text and making
the reader be part of the argument.
7. What paradox does Thoreau develop concerning the railroad in paragraph 2?
In paragraph 2, the author initially states that railroads are supposed to be built by us, men, however,
later on Thoreau states "We do not ride on the railroads, it rides upon us." This statement seemed
contradictory to me, which shows the use of paradox in this segment of the writing.
8. Paragraph 3 begins with a rhetorical question. How effectively does the rest of the paragraph
answer it?
If I understood the reading correctly, the author does not quite answer his rhetorical question
throughout the rest of the paragraph. As a matter of fact, he shifts into talking about people view
life, and their actions in specific cases. However, a rhetorical question is the one that does not expect
an answer. This paragraph, as the rest of the writing, seemed contradictory and paradoxical.
Sentences are compound – complex with a use of colons.

A Short Note On The De Notre Jours

How Is the Continual Battle of Nature vs Human Technology...
Explain how Bradbury uses this story to question human's reliance on technology
The house was created for the sole purpose of serving mankind.
The house cannot save the family, or humans, from the viciousness of a nuclear bomb.
By the time the reader is exposed to the house, the owners have been eradicated, "their images
burned on wood in one titanic instant". The house continues to make breakfast, have little robotic
mice that clean the house, and even read poetry for, essentially, no one.
When the story begins, it appears that machinery has triumphed over humans.
Humankind might have fallen beneath the powerful nuclear bomb, but technology has not.
Furthermore, while the family relied on the house to take care of ... Show more content on

Instead of a family having to cook and clean, the house does it for them. There is no love within the
house. While it would require more work, perhaps it would be more meaningful for a family to work
together to keep their house running properly. Instead of being a mere house, it would become a
home.
Techniques Bradbury uses throughout the story?
1) Personification
2) Foreshadowing
3) Suspense
1) The most often used literary technique to describe the house is personification, where you give
inanimate objects human–like characteristics. The stove is given human actions, "In the kitchen the
breakfast stove gave a hissing sigh and ejected from its warm interior...". This passage shows that
Bradbury has given a breakfast stove the ability to hiss a sigh. Stoves are not physically able to sigh.
Rain is personified, "And the rain tapped on the empty house, echoing". The rain did not literally tap
on the house, it means that the rain was making noise as it fell and came into contact with the house.
2) Bradbury uses is foreshadowing, hinting clues that suggest events that will later happen. The
voice–clock sang, worriedly, "...Ticktock, seven o' clock, time to get up, time to get up, seven o'
clock! As if it were afraid that nobody would". This shows that the house was sensing something
was going to be different today. It foreshadows that something bad may happen. There is a fire in the
house, "Smoke and silence. A great

Take A Look At The Pomodoro Technique
There is nothing like ending the day knowing that you have gotten everything done that you
intended. Is this something that either happens often in your life or only sometimes? Many of us
manage by lists. Many of us use list managing software program – either paper based and computer
based. But these can be useless if we do not have methods developed to actually get things done.
Without methods of managing our days, through "battle plans", we will find our lists growing and
growing – leading to frustrations and overwhelm.
We usually begin with the best of intentions – the highest expectations. But we usually end the day
wondering where the time went. I want to share with you 7 tips that may help you get more done in
a day. Implementation of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Take a look at the Pomodoro Technique. This is a specialized method of counting down where you
work for 25 minute periods and then break for 5. We call the 25 minute periods "Pomodoros". Some
folks, after several Pomodoros, take a longer break. Many find this to be an amazing system for
concentration and effectiveness.
6. While planning your day, make sure you find an efficient method to "Battle Plan" your day. You
want to account for everything that typically comes up in a day – such as obligations, duties, routine
errands, exercise and even interruptions. Once you decide what to do, and account for everything,
you will find that you can really concentrate on each item, knowing that all are accounted for.
7. Using a task management program, there are many out there, is very important if you wish to
keep the "grand picture" in view. It is the way to see the forest (as a metaphor). But remember that
Battle Planning your day is the only way to get the actions actually accomplished. You need both.
You need a task management system and a battle planning system.
Nothing every gets done tomorrow. Action is always a present time thing. Things are done now. We
manage lists and tasks to keep an eye on the big picture. But we manage our days, we battle plan our
days, to manage the currency of our lives – those precious hours we are granted at the beginning of

Evoking Freedom Study
The Effects of "Evoking Freedom" Technique on Compliance Social influence and the power of
social situations have always been central topics of inquiry for psychologists due to their impact on
our everyday lives. Social influence refers to the ways in which people alter their attitudes,
emotions, and behaviors of others. Every day, we encounter countless attempts by other people to
influence us. Likewise, we try to influence others. Compliance is a kind of social influence in which
an individual modifies his or her behavior in response to an appeal made by another person. Many
studies have investigated effective means of increasing compliance rates.

technique, and a higher compliance in a low–stakes request in the absence of the "evoking freedom"

A Historical Perspective On Anxiety Management Training Essay
In the article by Richard M. Suinn, of Colorado State University, titled "Clinical Practice, University
Research, and Students: A Historical Perspective on Anxiety Management Training" from The
American Psychologist, Suinn discusses the history and application of Anxiety Management
Training, AMT.
He first explains his development of AMT through is many years of educating at various
universities. Suinn first talks how he first "examined how anxiety influenced the relationship
between self–acceptance and acceptance of others and the association between anxiety and
identification" at Whitman College. (Suinn, 1995, p. 287) After many years of research he along
with one of his student, Hunter Hill, they found "that anxiety disrupts the trend for self–perceptions
to color evaluations of others and is significantly associated with low self–esteem." (Suinn, 1995, p.
287) While at Whitman he also conducted research with another student, Tom Smith, where they
hypothesized that is a correlation between high identification and low anxiety. However, this
hypothesis was proven to be wrong and they found no relationship between the two. Suinn, then
talks about his time at the University of Hawaii. Here, along with some of his students, investigated
if group desensitization or individual desensitization was more effective. It was found that they were
both equally affected, even more so they discovered that a briefer approach was just as successful as
a longer approach when reducing

Argumentative Essay-Dance Is A Sport
Dance is a Sport
Is dance a sport? A sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or
team competes against another or others for entertainment, dance is just that, but others consider it
an art or even just a halftime show. Dance teams in high schools do not get funded as much as other
sports and they get very little to no recognition at school or even on big sports channels. Dance
meets the requirements to even be an Olympic sport. Dance should be considered a sport as much as
other athletics.
First of all, there is very little funding that goes into dance, considering it is a sport and needs to be
equal to the other athletics. At Madisonville North Hopkins High School the dance team starts out
the season with only the remaining money that the team raised the previous season, it is different
from other sports. For example, football was given $9,500 this year to start out the season. Another
major issue is that the dance team has to practice in the lobby, ... Show more content on

regionals competition, or that they are advancing to Nationals? No, because many do not think about
the competitive aspect of dance, they only think about the stereotypical ballerinas. Usually the only
accounts of dance that people witness is at halftime during a game. Dance does not have a weekly
event scheduled for it like soccer, basketball, or other high school or college sports teams, which is
another reason why many don't see it as a sport. The only events that dance has is big competitions
that usually happen on the weekends. In dance, you can compete against large groups, duets, or even
soloist. They also do not think about the time and hard work that is put into the sport. Dance
requires strength, endurance, and coordination. It takes a lot of practice to be a strong dancer, just as

What Makes A Killer?
Stress is a killer – quite literally, in fact. And unlike junk food and beer, there is no guilty pleasure to
make it interesting to occasionally dabble. No, stress is all bad and for that reason anyway that we
can reduce it is going to be a life saver – again, quite literally. So here are three ideas that you might
never have heard of that will help you manage your time better, get more done and get that stress
monster to back off. The Eisenhower method "WHAT IS IMPORTANT IS SELDOM URGENT
AND WHAT IS URGENT IS SELDOM IMPORTANT." – President Eisenhower You've probably
heard of to–do lists, where you write down everything you need to do and then work your way
through it. The Eisenhower method is something like that, except that it's just a tad more
sophisticated and thereby a great deal more efficient. Start off by drawing a big plus sign. On the
left–hand side, you write 'important' at the top and 'not important' at the bottom. Along the top, you
write 'urgent' on the left and 'not urgent' on the right. In this way, you've created four boxes labeled
'urgent and important' at the top left through to 'not urgent and not important' on the bottom right.
These cells serve as priorities. The 'urgent and important' box is for things that can't be ignored. The
kitchen is on fire. An irate customer is on the phone. You cut yourself and your spraying blood all
over your pretty Eisenhower model (too visual?). The 'important but not urgent' box is for the tasks
that will help you

Analysis Of ' On The Waterfront '
"On the Waterfront" was photographed in such a captivating way. Boris Kaufman had a vision ahead
of his time. Many scenes in the movie are understood, not just through the script, but from the
cinematography as well. Three scenes in particular catch my eye. It is the artistic style and flare of
conveying the same idea in multiple mediums. The first scene is when Terry and Edie are on the
rooftop at Joey's pigeon coup. This scene portrays the moment in which I believe was the catalyst
for Terry that lead him to be truthful to Evie and stand up to Friendly. The second scene that I will
speak about is when "Kayo" Dugan is killed. When the preacher is giving his speech to all the
longshoremen. That speech was a testament of one man speaking out for what he knew was right.
The third scene that I will choose for this essay is where Terry walks to Friendly's dock office. After
the fight, Terry's march to work puts you on the edge of your seat. Each scene has depth that few
movies achieve. The first scene is the rooftop scene with Terry and Evie. The whole scene is shot
with natural light. Kaufman begins the scene with a long shot of the rooftop. Terry is waving a long
stick with a rag at the top of it to call back the pigeons to the coup. I believe Terry waving the "white
flag" was an implied surrender to Evie's love and the truth of what really happened to Joey. Even
though, Terry is still conflicted afterwards, this is his first step toward standing up to the Friendly

the intricacies of free–trade or globalization impacts the lives of women– their personhood, their
families and their communities. The research involved about eight (8) Asian countries – India,
Hongkong, Thailand, Pakistan, Sri Langka, Indonesia, South Korea and the Philippines with poor
women who are very much involved and working in the fishing, agriculture,
manufacturing/industrial sectors as well as migrant women workers.
The Asia Pacific Research Network (APRN) took the lead in the research event as part of their
research program's effort to look into how "the socio–economic restructuring brought about by
globalization" rather than boost women's empowerment and participation " end up losing from free

an opportunity for Asian women participants "to study the impact of globalization" as a group, find

Essay About Adolescents Et La Societe Face Au Numerique
CHAPITRE 2 : ADOLESCENTS ET LA SOCIETE FACE AU NUMERIQUE A. Implémentation

Importance of Creativity
Why is creativity an important aspect of business organization? Explain the major issues facing the
manager in encouraging creativity in the organization and supporting creative people in order to

Creativity is an important aspect of business organization. This is particularly important as
companies are facing continuous changes in the global economy. Change is a continuously
phenomenon which happens to the organizations both internally and externally that organizations
need to make creative plans and reactions towards predictable or unpredictable challenges.
The organizational environment has been changing rapidly. It is a set of forces and conditions

He stated that finding innovative solutions requires imagination and creativity, while creativity is a
necessary preliminary to innovation. Hence, creativity is important to the performance of
organizations. Although creativity generally leads people to think of new products, we should not
limit creativity in other areas such as new forms of organization, new markets, new production
processes, that is anything new to the present organization structure, culture and functions of the
organization. Hence, some types of problems which require creative thinking are listed as follows.
But there is limitless application of creative thinking (University of Leicester, 2007, p. 90):
 how to make more effective use of resources including management time,
 how to improve a product's appeal to customers,
 how to increase staff motivation,
 how to identify new business opportunities,
 how to improve the quality of production output,
 defining the vision/mission/objectives of the organization, and
 looking for a new organization of work flows.
If an organization is able to make effective use of resources which has becoming more scarce and

Short Story Analysis: “a Television Drama”
Short Story Analysis: "A Television Drama"
Plot Summary
The short story's plot begins by introducing the main character Carolee Mitchell. Carolee is in her
home doing her daily chores when suddenly she looks out her window to find many policeman,
police dogs and police cars outside on her street. Carolee did not know what was happening so she
continued on with her chores. In a few moments Carolee notices a young man drenched in blood in
her garden outside. Carolee wants to call the police but questions what good it would be considering
they are already on her street. She wants to call someone but none of her neighbors were home.

Setting The story takes place in a neighborhood that i estimate is quite small considering Carolee
knows her neighbors are gone. The setting revolves around Carolee's home. Her doing her chores in
her home and the suspect roaming around outside. The setting influences the story a lot because it
influences Carolee's reaction to what happened. She had never seen anything like that in person and
it opened her eyes to how society really is.
Conflict
In the story there are 3 types of conflict, Person vs. Self, Person vs. Society and Person vs. Person.
Person vs. Self would come in when Carolee had to decide what she was gonna do. Would she call
the police or help the person or just leave well alone. Person vs. Society would be the police force
against the suspect. Finally Person vs. Person would be when the suspect shot the other police
officer and when he was getting shot at.
St.Croix 3
Symbolism
I believe that Carolee symbolises many people in our society at the moment. People who are
oblivious to what is actually happening and how our society functions. Her reaction to what
happened how the police came into her neighborhood and how the man was drenched in blood and
was tumbling around showed lack of experience. Like lack of knowledge of what was actually going
on.
Literary Devices In the story the author used foreshadowing. The foreshadowing came in when
Carolee heard the dogs barking. This foreshadowed that something was found or the dogs found
someone so

Fly Away Peter, David Malouf Essay
Fly Away Peter
In what ways does David Malouf use interesting literary techniques in Fly Away Peter to explore
ideas and themes?
"Two little dickie birds,
Sitting on a wall;
One named Peter,
One named Paul.
Fly away Peter!
Fly away Paul!
Come Back Peter!

Traditional
Throughout 'Fly Away Peter' Malouf utilises a variety of literary techniques such as contrast,
Imagery, Symbolism and foreshadowing to portray ideas and themes. The title 'Fly Away Peter'
makes reference to the traditional English nursery rhyme 'Two Little Dickie Birds'. Moulaf utilises
this nursery rhyme to make the connection between themes within 'Fly Away Peter' and everyday
life.

The invisible paddock talked about in the first sentence is foreshadowing of the introduction of the
two planes of life. Moulaf is also using symbolism. The "invisible paddock" symbolises the sky, and
as later introduced the view from the sky is the second plane of life.
Moulaf has used the lines; "One named Peter, One named Paul" to link the characters of the book to
the religious views and ways of living in the 1960's. In the 1750's the rhyme 'Two Little Dickie
Birds' talked of two birds names Jack and Gill, in the early 1900's the names were changed to the
disciples 'Peter and Paul'. In 'Fly away Peter' Moulaf has used this link between the birds name to
introduce the religious connections. The bird peter symbioses Jim and Paul symbolises Ashley in the
context of 'Fly away Peter'.
Throughout the novel Moulaf uses the literary technique of narration to tell parts of the story. "The
world Jim found himself in..." this narrator figure symbolises God. Jim and Ashley also symbolise
angels. This references the first quote Moulaf placed in the front of the novel. The "divine creature"
is an angel. Jim and Ashley are angels incarnated in a human form, and the 'flying away' is the time
on earth and the coming back is the return to heaven. In the novel Jim dies from injuries sustained
form a battle, and in this the cycle of his life is complete and he returns to heaven.

Microcapsules Essay
Layer–by–Layer Approach for Making Microcapsules
Muhammad Faiz Omar (201308264)
4th December 2014
Abstract
The fabrication of hollow multilayer microcapsules in the beginning is initiated by layer–by–layer
(LbL) self–assembly technique of oppositely charged polyelectrolyte on colloidal template followed
by core decomposition. The main concept of microencapsulation is to protect the contents of
fabricated microcapsules from the harmful environment in which it is surrounded. In this literature
review, I shall outline the technique of microcapsules encapsulation employing LbL approach, lists
of polyelectrolytes and templates and application of microcapsules.
Introduction
Over the past decades, nanometre–sized or known as microcapsules have been benefited the
approach of Layer–by–Layer(LbL) technique due to the ability of tailoring their properties(e.g., size
, shape, colloidal stability, surface–functionality, composition) that are biocompatible and
biodegradable.1–3,10They are broadly used in many applications including food technologies,
cosmetics, textiles industry and pharmaceuticals. The LBL assembly of multilayers are
fundamentally built up by the alternating deposition of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes onto a
sacrificial template such that the charge oscillates between positive and negative with each layer.1,4
The establishment of nanocoatings using LbL assembly method distinguishes itself in its
intelligibility compared to the more conventional method. The

Surprised by Joy and William Blake’s poem, The Sick Rose...
William Wordsworth's poem titled "Surprised by Joy" and William Blake's poem, "The Sick Rose"
employs a range of poetic techniques to highlight the pain that love can create. On the other hand,
John Clare's poem titled "First Love" and Robert Burns's poem, "A Red, Red Rose" contrastingly
explore the theme of love as a positive to be celebrated. William Wordsworth's poem titled
"Surprised by Joy" is a sonnet which uses simile, personification, metaphor, emotive language and a
question to highlight the pain love can create. The poet uses the simile "impatient as the wind" to
emphasize the fact that life is like the wind, it comes and goes as it pleases. In this case, the "wind"
is used as a symbol for 'life'. "Silent tomb" is a personification which shows that his love, being his
daughter, is dead and cannot respond to him. The metaphor "have I been so beguiled as to be blind"
is used to highlight the grief and pain his daughter's death has caused him. "Grievous love" is an
emotive language which is used to show how much heartache and misery love can bring us when it
is lost. The question "how could I forget thee?" is used in this poem to stress the importance of his
memories of his deceased daughter which being the only thing that he has of her. The poet
successfully expresses his opinion on how much pain love can create through his use of various
poetic techniques. Similarly, William Blake's poem, "The Sick Rose" uses personification,
symbolism, oxymoron and rhyme to

The Dragon Who We Soon Discover
I had qualms at first about how exactly to complete a task such as this, being that my experience
with this type of writing is limited at best. However, I will confess there is much fun to be found in
the fanciful wordplay. Not only are we asked to fill in a piece of the story, requiring knowledge of
the plot line at this point in the story, but the task also prompts a deeper understanding of the literary
devices and influences present in this style of writing. A task of this nature not only familiarizes
students with both the plot line and the technical aspects of the writing, but also fosters an
opportunity to incorporate creativity and merge all of these dynamic fragments into a single
masterpiece.
To begin, I considered the surrounding plot of the story. Just before the section begins we learn of
the dragon who we soon discover is a major player in this epic tale. Thus far in the story the dragon
has played a rather dormant role. Beowulf has been ruling the kingdom for over 50 years and we
have heard not a single mention of the beast that sleeps as he guards his sparkly trove of wealth. At
this point we are also introduced to an escaped slave who wakes the fiery beast by stealing a gem–
studded goblet from the lair. He claims that his thievery was in fact accidental, and so proceeds the
tale of his misadventures in the earthen pit. His story recounts that as he was escaping the chains of

Campion Descents' play "Embers" examines the connection between individuals and the community
as they react to significant events. The communities' residents' reaction to the fire in yackandandah
forest, The story of the Blue Duck hotel ... and the kangaroo and the story of danny and don ... and
the horses. Campion uses a wide range of techniques such as repetition, Irony, alliteration and
Imagery/onomatopoeia.This is also shown by quotes from Campion's interview by the abc on the
2003 Victorian bushfires.
The connection of the community and individuals is shown by Campion in The Communities'
residents' reaction to the fire in yackandandah forest.'Skinny, Slippery Path' (pg 41) is the use of
alliteration by campion to show how dangerous the experience of a bushfire real is and the things
they would have to overcome to be able to save themselves and others they cared about. Campion
also uses Repetition 'Burn me hands because it doesn't work, it doesn't work like it does in the
movies.' (pg 41) this conveys that they done what they need/had to do to save the animals that the
cared dearly as her plan did not work according to her plan. An additional example of this would be '
Then as that roar got closer you couldn't hear a thing' (pg 42) this is alliteration, of the word 'roar'
which show that the fire was very loud and dangerous as it came closer to them in the
mineshaft. This shows that no matter how dangerous the situation got the community would do there

Analysis Of ' The Pearls On A String '
Out of all the amazing things I saw in the Pearls on a String, the one that I found the most interesting
was Akbar and 'Abd al–Rahim, from the Akabarmana (Book of Akabr, 1586–1589). It is amazing to
see how many different scenes can all occur in one piece. Overall, The Book of Akbar had multiple
outstanding pieces but the emotion in this particular page is what caught my attention. Although I
did not study the other pages as intensely as this one, it is clear to see that Abul Fazlt's technique is
spectacular throughout each and every page. This painting is historical, depicting a young Abdul
Rahim Khan–I–Khana being received by Akbar after his family was killed. A great story is told
throughout the entire book, although this particular image has more of an intensity to it. This page
functions as a devotional image in order to display the emotional trauma 'Abd al–Rahim must have
felt having all that he knew dragged from under him. This occurrence after royal bloodshed
subsequently sets a mood for the piece. Some of the painting is hard to depict, due to some men
appearing respectful and embracing while others appeared with contempt. This page is taller than
wide with a beautiful background paper designs. The placement of the piece is harmonious in every
way possible. In paying attention to the placement more emphasis is put onto the central area of the
painting. The frame compliments the shape of the piece allowing it to bring your focus back after
the eye wanders around

The Impact of Stress and Its Effect on Society
Introduction
Stress is like a fever boiling in the human system, as it rises, the body weakens. What exactly is the
meaning of stress, and how does it affect the daily lives of people? Stress can be defined as an
unpleasant state of emotional and physiological arousal that people experience in situations that they
either perceive as dangerous or threatening to their well being(Morrow 2011).
A person can under go stress through out their daily lives, and for many, stress is so common place
that is has become a way of life.
The correlation between stress and age has been studied continuously through out recent
years(Morrow 2011) Some people define stress as events or situations that cause them to feel
tension, pressure, or negative ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Stress and Gender The physiology of the stress response is similar for everyone. Researchers believe
that there are distinct differences in the way women and men experience and respond to stress(e.g.,
Bekker, &. Boselie, K, 2002). Community surveys taken in many countries find women consistently
report greater distress than men do in study of roughly 1,100 American adults that appeared in The
Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, found that women were more likely than men to
experience ongoing stress and feel that their lives were out of their control
(e.g., Bekker, &. Boselie, K, 2002). Social responsibilities typically handled by women some of
which including child care, care of older relatives, and housework are exposes of more abundant
opportunities for distress(e.g., Bekker, &. Boselie, K, 2002).
Men more often report financial stress than women do, which makes sense since men are
traditionally expected to be breadwinners. In a UCLA study analyzed data from hundreds of
biological and behavioral studies concluded that females were more likely to deal with stress by
nurturing those around them and reaching out to others(e.g., Bekker, &. Boselie, K, 2002). Men, on
the other hand, were more likely to sequester themselves or initiate a confrontation, behavior in line
with the "fight or flight"response that's long been associated with stress(e.g., Bekker, &.

Reflection On Productivity
Sometimes I make the analogy that being organized or productive is similar to being fit. It's not
about eating healthy one day or going for one five–mile run. It's about making a thousand choices a
day to take tiny actions that over time add up to leading a fit lifestyle. Being productive means
making the right choices over and over again, a thousand times a day with the most minute decisions
and actions. Thinking of productivity as a lifestyle is what led me to find it so interesting. "What we
know increases productivity is so rarely what we do!" What projects are you involved in? My main
project is writing a weekly column, but I also test software and fitness technology to write reviews
of them. I'm also writing a book about productivity that aims to bridge the gap between research on
how to maximize our efficiency and our daily practices. What we know increases productivity is so
rarely what we do! I'm interested in why that's the case, as well as how we can conscientiously make
the choice to follow advice regarding what works. How many meetings do you normally have each
week? On average, I attend about one meeting each week. I have a standing invitation to join one
particular meeting every Monday via Skype, and I join it about 50 percent of the time, mostly to
keep in contact with a few particular people. If I'm working on an article that requires research, I
might have a phone interview or two. Roughly once a month I'll do a spot on TV, radio or a podcast–

Address your drinking problem and get down to safer drinking levels instead of abruptly stopping it
which might have its own negative effects. Addiction is psychological whether its smoking or

I Have A Good Idea Of My Stress
When it comes to wellness issues, I have always struggled the most with stress. I have always been
more prone to become stressed, due to my anxiety. Therefore, stress is a big obstacle in my life, and
it is something that I need to find a way to deal with, especially now that I have begun to attend
college. Because I have dealt with anxiety before, I have a good idea of my stress level. My stress
levels can become very high, and as a result, I have several ways of dealing with stress. As a result, I
am familiar with some of the techniques mentioned in the textbook. For example, exercising has
always been an effective stress technique for me. As mentioned in the textbook, performing
exercises such as running and walking on a regular basis has been an effective way for me to reduce
stress. However, the textbook has also introduced me to new techniques to help manage my stress,
as well as ways to improve techniques I already use. One of these new techniques is eating healthy.
Prior to reading the text, I never considered that my eating habits would affect my stress levels.
However, after reading through the text, I can definitely see how my eating habits and stress levels
affect each other. After evaluating my eating habits, I noticed that I do not eat healthy when I am
stressed. When I become stressed or have an important event coming up, such having a test or a
paper due, I tend to skip meals like breakfast and lunch, and instead eat smaller snacks of foods such
as candy

Essay about Sillouette
et A silhouette is defined as a "dark image outlined against a lighter background." this title is perfect
for the lifeless world described in Pauline Johnson's poem, Silhouette. The silhouette is used as a
metaphor for the decay of the chief. As the Chiefs surroundings decay and fall apart around him.
The chief is slowly consumed by the loss of the land and his people. As the land begins to evaporate

Puis grâce à la puissance des super–ordinateurs apparus dans les années 1950 et 1960, ils occupaient

How do the Literary Devices construct meaning in "The Visit"? The book "The Visit" is a play
which is composed by literary devices. All of the messages and ideas that this play contains are
expressed through literary devices, thus giving life to the major themes. Literary devices give
meaning to "The Visit" because they construct the main theme, which is money can corrupt
anything. To begin, there are many literary devices in "The Visit", and they are continuously used
with the purpose of constructing the play's main theme. These are some of the prolonged literary

This change in people's character again contributes to the main theme, and gives meaning to it.
Furthermore, the setting is a fundamental literary device which forms the main theme and gives
meaning to "The Visit". This is because the setting paves out the environment and situation in which
Guellen is in from the beginning of the book. All throughout Act 1 the reader is given the idea of
how poor Guellen is and everyone is so humble and local. For example, how the train no longer
stops in Guellen, how people only buy cheap local brands at the shop and not imported, how they
accept Ill as dead for Claire's one million, how Ill is the most popular personality. These examples
all show how the town functions, and how they are desperate for money and are willing to commit a
moral crime in order to receive this money. The setting in the "The Visit" gives meaning to the play
because it fundaments how and why Guellen is the way it is and allows the reader to understand the
specific effects Guellen's history plays in the decision making, once Claire offers the one million
pounds. So, literary devices also give meaning to "The Visit" because they lay the base for the play
and how it develops. Finally, literary devices give meaning to "The Visit" because they comprise the
main theme, which is money can corrupt anything. Literary devices give meaning by creating the
bases of the play, and forming the main theme in wide number of ways. Literary devices are the

A Six-Step Writing Process
As high school students you write almost every day whether that is in the form of an essay, research
paper or a tweet on the Internet. What if I told you there was a simpler way to write that allows
information to be organized as well as presented better? The writing process consists of six main
steps. These six steps consist of pre–writing, drafting, revising, editing, proofreading and publishing.
Some of these steps are more prominent in the process, but as a whole these steps assist in the
creating of a clear and well–written paper. To help demonstrate the writing process in simpler way I
will relate it to something that is well known to most teenagers, that being food. Not just food but
also the process of preparing food in specific the process of creating a stir–fry. In the writing process
the first step consists of a pre–writing stage. Pre–writing can be explained in the form of an outline
or notes about the writing assignment you will begin shortly. In congruence with the pre writing
stage, creating a stir–fry uses similar procedures. So to start off the stir–fry process you must first
gather your ingredients. These ingredients can consist of a variety of meats to provide protein
including chicken, shrimp and beef. This step is just like in a paper when you gather the info for the
bulk of your paper, such as choosing the topic of the paper. By doing this first step in the writing
process as well as the cooking process you prepare yourself a guideline for the

"But Sport is in the name DANCESPORT" is what some are saying now, but many still don't accept

Thomas Hardy's The Convergence Of The Twain
Thomas Hardy's The Convergence Of The Twain
The poem The Convergence of the Twain, by Thomas Hardy, is about the sinking of the Titanic. The
title alone describes the ship and the iceberg meeting as one. By choosing this title, the author
automatically conveys a seriousness of the poem. The author uses various literary techniques to
convey his mockery and careless attitude towards the sinking of the ship.
In the first five stanzas, the author discusses the already submerged ship. ?Stilly couches she,?
describes the ship resting on the bottom of the ocean. The lines, ?Jewels in joy designed?lie

and craftsmanship going down with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also all the jewels that were present on the ship, being worn by first–class passengers were now
sitting at the bottom of the ocean floor. The usage of irony represents the loss of the ship, instead of
the loss of life. These lines are indicative of the author?s attitude towards what the ship stood for. He
didn?t want to talk about the tragedy with all the lives lost, instead he concentrates on the ship and
the iceberg meeting.
In stanzas VI, VII, and VIII, it is clear about the destination of the ship and the iceberg colliding. In
stanza VI, while the ship was moving along, very confidently, God was putting forth his plan. In
stanza VII, the iceberg was sitting off in the distance just waiting for the convergence. In stanza
VIII, it describes the final meeting between the two objects. As the ship grew closer and closer to the
iceberg, and also in its confidence, the iceberg was also growing in its confidence and meaning. The
ship thought that it was over God and didn?t need to worry about anything, so God responded back
with the fate of the objects to show that he had more power than the ship, and to sort of show who?s
?boss?.
The attitude of the author was very indifferent. He chose not to talk about the tragic lives lost in the
poem, but rather the ships loss. Through his use of diction, personification, and irony, he gives the
idea that it was all just destiny, and there was nothing that the ship could do. God

The Rabbinic Approach : Genesis 11 : 1
The rabbinic approach is the rabbis and religious people's point of view on a story. Studying the
rabbinic approach can add to the understanding of Genesis 11:1–9 because rabbis compare texts to
other texts in the Tanakh or verses of a text. They look for the similarities to help us interpret the
story. This makes us compare characters or words said throughout the story. This helps us
understand the text better. For example, the rabbinic approach compares Genesis 11:4 with Genesis
11:2. the people built the tower to show independence from G!d and show they didn't need g!d
anymore. The rabbinic approach gets this interpretation from Genesis 11:3. This relates to Genesis 4
"Come let us build for ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the skies." They wanted to build
the tower themselves to how independence as the rabbinic approach points out. They thought that
they didn't need G!D anymore and building this successfully would prove that. But they did need
G!d everyone needs G!D. The rabbinic approach says Building the tower to show independence is
bad because they didn't any longer worship and except g!D. Everyone needs G!d and the fact that
they thought they didn't need G!D was bad because he is above us. This part of the rabbinic
approach will help us understand the story because it is a very helpful fact to know in understanding
the text when it. The lesson this part of the rabbinic approach teaches us to be loyal and respect G!d
as our G!D. In addition, we should

Flannery O’Connor’s 'A Good Man is Hard to Find' Essay
Flannery O'Connor had her roots set in Milledgeville, Georgia, which happens to be one of many
states that when combined, form what is known as the "Bible Belt" of America. In respect to this,
O'Connor talks about her beliefs: "This means that for me the meaning of life is centered in our
Redemption by Christ and what I see in the world I see in relation to that" (O'Connor 482–483). As
O'Connor was a devout Catholic, violence was not a direct preaching, but Joyce Carol Oates writes
that "succumbing to the divine through violence . . . is immediate and irreparable" (O'Connor 483).

around the grandmother, the protagonist, and they are placing her on a road to hell, paved in her own
narcissism and condescending behavior. The foreshadowing provided by O'Connor is an
unmistakably blunt literary device incorporated in the story to give a sense of what will happen next,
without giving it completely away. This in turn has the rising action turn into rising suspense as
well. The grandmother is wearing an extremely fancy set of clothing, to include white cotton gloves,

and run in with The Misfit. "'She wouldn't stay at home for a million bucks,' June Star said. 'Afraid

My Expeirences with the Foot-in-the-Door Phenomenon
As a class we have covered numerous concepts, theories and techniques in chapters six, through
eight and eleven in our textbooks and in class lectures. The concept in which has intrigued me so far
in the semester of social psychology is the foot–in–the–door phenomenon. The foot–in–the–door
phenomenon is described in our textbooks as "the tendency for people who have first agreed to a
small request to comply later with a large request" (Virginia Commonwealth University, 2013). It
can be understood as asking someone (i.e. friend, family member, co–worker or stranger) agreeing
to do a small service for you then later they are more willing to agree to a larger favor that you ask
of them. Most of this phenomenon is based on how you present the first small request to the targeted
person. Your initial attitude follows the behavior. The foot–in–the–door phenomenon is a persuasion
strategy used to manipulate someone to submit to your requests. It starts off as an insignificant
gradual process and before you know it you are giving a lot of support or service to someone
without noticing it right away. This technique is seen regularly in public organizations like charities.
An example would be a charity would ask the public to sign a petition or wear a button to support
the organization. After this small request the campaigner then goes back after a week (give or take)
and asks for a donation. The person then feels obligated to give to the charity after submitting to the

Criminal Investigators and Interrogations-Interviews
To find the truth in any interview/interrogation it takes a skilled and qualified investigator. Criminal
Investigators continue to learn every day. They find new techniques to approach an
interview/interrogation, they learn new ways to talk to people, and the success of their
interviews/interrogations depends on their ability to take what they learn and apply it. In order to
develop great interview and interrogation skills, one must be able to communicate well verbally and
non–verbally, be able to read body language, and know the facts of their case to be able to ask the
right questions. To be a successful Criminal Investigator, one needs to have great
interrogation/interview skills.
During interviews/interrogations a Criminal Investigator needs to listen and observe. Listening to
verbal behavior helps the investigator determine whether or not the individual is speaking the truth
or lying. When an investigator asks questions, it is crucial for them to watch how the individual
reacts to those questions. According to John Reid Associates, there are cues to look for and listen for
when conducting an interrogation/interview. Some cues are clearing of the throat, deep
breathing/sighing, and nervous laughing.
During interviews/interrogations, Criminal Investigators need to be able to read body language.
Body language is a key factor in determining if an individual is lying. When an individual is lying
they show signs indicating the question that was asked sparked an

A Critical Analysis of "Revelation" by Flannery O'Connor
Flannery O'Connor's background influenced her to write the short story "
Revelation." One important influence on the story is her Southern upbringing.
During her lifetime, Southerners were very prejudiced towards people of other races and lifestyles.
They believed that people who were less fortunate were inferior to them; therefore, people were
labeled as different things and placed into different social classes. The South provided O'Connor
with the images she needed for her characters. Similarly, this can easily be identified in her short
story "Revelation." The characters in the story are identified by physical characteristics and some

Turpin all her life. Another element of plot which reinforces the theme of "Revelation", is the
element of surprise which actually brings the main conflict out in the open. O'Connor brings the
conflict out well because the incidents that built up to the actual conflict do not give away what is
going to happen. The action around the conflict is completely surprising and unpredictable. We are
aware the girl dislikes Mrs. Turpin because of her previous actions. The girl never does anything
other than give dirty looks; therefore, we are not expecting any type of physical violence between
them.
When the girl hits Mrs. Turpin in the face with the book, Mrs. Turpin is conversing with another
character and is not talking to the girl. In this situation, a violent act by the girl is completely
unpredictable. Also,
O'Connor uses an unhappy ending for this story. Mrs. Turpin, who is happy being who she is, does
not understand why the girl hated her. She does not think she is a bad person, and she cannot
comprehend why she is not liked. O'Connor ends the story with Mrs. Turpin's questions unanswered
which leaves her with a sadness that is unsolvable. Through the use of social conflict, the element of
surprise, and an unhappy ending, a believable plot is created. To further develop the theme,
O'Connor uses consistent behavior, clear motivation, and plausibility to create convincing
characterization. The protagonist, Mrs. Turpin, is convincing because she consistently

  • 1. Essay in Spanish Anastasia Danilevsky Mr. Deidrich Band B October 27 A.P. English "Where I Lived, and What I lived For" Henry David Thoreau Questions on Rhetoric and style 1. In the first paragraph, what does Thoreau declare as his higher purpose? I believe that Thoreau sees his higher purpose in life as to live life naturally, to get every breathe out of it, to live truly and happily and understand how it really is that life works. One would say Thoreau focuses on "Spartan–like" lifestyle, mentioned by the author in paragraph 1, however, later on the author, Thoreau mentions God and how one should "glorify and enjoy him forever". I believe that the author is contradicting himself starting from paragraph 1. The main purpose in authors life is to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The author is viewed as if he is unsure of his own ideas. The attitude of the text, whenever the author asks rhetorical questions is interrogative. Another example of a repetition in the specific writing can be seen in paragraph 6. When the author constantly repeats "let" or "let us". By using these repetitions the author is appealing to pathos by involving the audience into the text and making the reader be part of the argument. 7. What paradox does Thoreau develop concerning the railroad in paragraph 2? In paragraph 2, the author initially states that railroads are supposed to be built by us, men, however, later on Thoreau states "We do not ride on the railroads, it rides upon us." This statement seemed contradictory to me, which shows the use of paradox in this segment of the writing. 8. Paragraph 3 begins with a rhetorical question. How effectively does the rest of the paragraph answer it? If I understood the reading correctly, the author does not quite answer his rhetorical question throughout the rest of the paragraph. As a matter of fact, he shifts into talking about people view life, and their actions in specific cases. However, a rhetorical question is the one that does not expect an answer. This paragraph, as the rest of the writing, seemed contradictory and paradoxical. Sentences are compound – complex with a use of colons. 9.

  • 6. How Is the Continual Battle of Nature vs Human Technology... Explain how Bradbury uses this story to question human's reliance on technology The house was created for the sole purpose of serving mankind. The house cannot save the family, or humans, from the viciousness of a nuclear bomb. By the time the reader is exposed to the house, the owners have been eradicated, "their images burned on wood in one titanic instant". The house continues to make breakfast, have little robotic mice that clean the house, and even read poetry for, essentially, no one. When the story begins, it appears that machinery has triumphed over humans. Humankind might have fallen beneath the powerful nuclear bomb, but technology has not. Furthermore, while the family relied on the house to take care of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead of a family having to cook and clean, the house does it for them. There is no love within the house. While it would require more work, perhaps it would be more meaningful for a family to work together to keep their house running properly. Instead of being a mere house, it would become a home. Techniques Bradbury uses throughout the story? 1) Personification 2) Foreshadowing 3) Suspense 1) The most often used literary technique to describe the house is personification, where you give inanimate objects human–like characteristics. The stove is given human actions, "In the kitchen the breakfast stove gave a hissing sigh and ejected from its warm interior...". This passage shows that Bradbury has given a breakfast stove the ability to hiss a sigh. Stoves are not physically able to sigh. Rain is personified, "And the rain tapped on the empty house, echoing". The rain did not literally tap on the house, it means that the rain was making noise as it fell and came into contact with the house. 2) Bradbury uses is foreshadowing, hinting clues that suggest events that will later happen. The voice–clock sang, worriedly, "...Ticktock, seven o' clock, time to get up, time to get up, seven o' clock! As if it were afraid that nobody would". This shows that the house was sensing something

Is this something that either happens often in your life or only sometimes? Many of us manage by lists. Many of us use list managing software program – either paper based and computer based. But these can be useless if we do not have methods developed to actually get things done. Without methods of managing our days, through "battle plans", we will find our lists growing and growing – leading to frustrations and overwhelm. This is a specialized method of counting down where you work for 25 minute periods and then break for 5. We call the 25 minute periods "Pomodoros". Some folks, after several Pomodoros, take a longer break. Many find this to be an amazing system for concentration and effectiveness. 6. While planning your day, make sure you find an efficient method to "Battle Plan" your day. You want to account for everything that typically comes up in a day – such as obligations, duties, routine errands, exercise and even interruptions. Once you decide what to do, and account for everything, you will find that you can really concentrate on each item, knowing that all are accounted for. 7. Using a task management program, there are many out there, is very important if you wish to keep the "grand picture" in view. It is the way to see the forest (as a metaphor). But remember that Battle Planning your day is the only way to get the actions actually accomplished. You need both. You need a task management system and a battle planning system. Nothing every gets done tomorrow. Action is always a present time thing. Things are done now. We manage lists and tasks to keep an eye on the big picture. • 13. Evoking Freedom Study The Effects of "Evoking Freedom" Technique on Compliance Social influence and the power of social situations have always been central topics of inquiry for psychologists due to their impact on our everyday lives. Social influence refers to the ways in which people alter their attitudes, emotions, and behaviors of others. Every day, we encounter countless attempts by other people to influence us. Likewise, we try to influence others. Compliance is a kind of social influence in which an individual modifies his or her behavior in response to an appeal made by another person. • 15. A Historical Perspective On Anxiety Management Training Essay In the article by Richard M. Suinn, of Colorado State University, titled "Clinical Practice, University Research, and Students: A Historical Perspective on Anxiety Management Training" from The American Psychologist, Suinn discusses the history and application of Anxiety Management Training, AMT. He first explains his development of AMT through is many years of educating at various universities. Suinn first talks how he first "examined how anxiety influenced the relationship between self–acceptance and acceptance of others and the association between anxiety and identification" at Whitman College. (Suinn, 1995, p. 287) After many years of research he along with one of his student, Hunter Hill, they found "that anxiety disrupts the trend for self–perceptions to color evaluations of others and is significantly associated with low self–esteem." (Suinn, 1995, p. 287) While at Whitman he also conducted research with another student, Tom Smith, where they hypothesized that is a correlation between high identification and low anxiety. However, this hypothesis was proven to be wrong and they found no relationship between the two. Suinn, then talks about his time at the University of Hawaii. Here, along with some of his students, investigated if group desensitization or individual desensitization was more effective. It was found that they were both equally affected, even more so they discovered that a briefer approach was just as successful as a longer approach when reducing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Argumentative Essay-Dance Is A Sport Dance is a Sport Is dance a sport? A sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment, dance is just that, but others consider it an art or even just a halftime show. Dance teams in high schools do not get funded as much as other sports and they get very little to no recognition at school or even on big sports channels. Dance meets the requirements to even be an Olympic sport. Dance should be considered a sport as much as other athletics. First of all, there is very little funding that goes into dance, considering it is a sport and needs to be equal to the other athletics. At Madisonville North Hopkins High School the dance team starts out the season with only the remaining money that the team raised the previous season, it is different from other sports. For example, football was given $9,500 this year to start out the season. Another major issue is that the dance team has to practice in the lobby, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dance does not have a weekly event scheduled for it like soccer, basketball, or other high school or college sports teams, which is another reason why many don't see it as a sport. The only events that dance has is big competitions that usually happen on the weekends. In dance, you can compete against large groups, duets, or even soloist. No, stress is all bad and for that reason anyway that we can reduce it is going to be a life saver – again, quite literally. So here are three ideas that you might never have heard of that will help you manage your time better, get more done and get that stress monster to back off. The Eisenhower method "WHAT IS IMPORTANT IS SELDOM URGENT AND WHAT IS URGENT IS SELDOM IMPORTANT." – President Eisenhower You've probably heard of to–do lists, where you write down everything you need to do and then work your way through it. The Eisenhower method is something like that, except that it's just a tad more sophisticated and thereby a great deal more efficient. Start off by drawing a big plus sign. On the left–hand side, you write 'important' at the top and 'not important' at the bottom. Along the top, you write 'urgent' on the left and 'not urgent' on the right. In this way, you've created four boxes labeled 'urgent and important' at the top left through to 'not urgent and not important' on the bottom right. These cells serve as priorities. The 'urgent and important' box is for things that can't be ignored. The kitchen is on fire. An irate customer is on the phone. • 21. Analysis Of ' On The Waterfront ' "On the Waterfront" was photographed in such a captivating way. Boris Kaufman had a vision ahead of his time. Many scenes in the movie are understood, not just through the script, but from the cinematography as well. Three scenes in particular catch my eye. It is the artistic style and flare of conveying the same idea in multiple mediums. The first scene is when Terry and Edie are on the rooftop at Joey's pigeon coup. This scene portrays the moment in which I believe was the catalyst for Terry that lead him to be truthful to Evie and stand up to Friendly. The second scene that I will speak about is when "Kayo" Dugan is killed. When the preacher is giving his speech to all the longshoremen. That speech was a testament of one man speaking out for what he knew was right. The third scene that I will choose for this essay is where Terry walks to Friendly's dock office. After the fight, Terry's march to work puts you on the edge of your seat. Each scene has depth that few movies achieve. The first scene is the rooftop scene with Terry and Evie. The whole scene is shot with natural light. Kaufman begins the scene with a long shot of the rooftop. Terry is waving a long stick with a rag at the top of it to call back the pigeons to the coup. I believe Terry waving the "white flag" was an implied surrender to Evie's love and the truth of what really happened to Joey. Even though, Terry is still conflicted afterwards, this is his first step toward standing up to the Friendly and his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The book is a compiled action research and documentation work that focused on the varying levels and degree of intensities of women's work as they contribute to a country's development and how the intricacies of free–trade or globalization impacts the lives of women– their personhood, their families and their communities. The research involved about eight (8) Asian countries – India, Hongkong, Thailand, Pakistan, Sri Langka, Indonesia, South Korea and the Philippines with poor women who are very much involved and working in the fishing, agriculture, manufacturing/industrial sectors as well as migrant women workers. The Asia Pacific Research Network (APRN) took the lead in the research event as part of their research program's effort to look into how "the socio–economic restructuring brought about by globalization" rather than boost women's empowerment and participation " end up losing from free market and monetarist policies" especially around the countries of Asia. The undertaking also meant an opportunity for Asian women participants "to study the impact of globalization" as a group, find a common analysis and finally forge a stronger solidarity and action. From the research workshop it conducted in 2003, a total of 49 villages in at least 14 towns were identified and was agreed upon as its research sites. Explain the major issues facing the manager in encouraging creativity in the organization and supporting creative people in order to improve performance. Creativity is an important aspect of business organization. This is particularly important as companies are facing continuous changes in the global economy. He stated that finding innovative solutions requires imagination and creativity, while creativity is a necessary preliminary to innovation. Hence, creativity is important to the performance of organizations. Although creativity generally leads people to think of new products, we should not limit creativity in other areas such as new forms of organization, new markets, new production processes, that is anything new to the present organization structure, culture and functions of the organization. Hence, some types of problems which require creative thinking are listed as follows. But there is limitless application of creative thinking (University of Leicester, 2007, p. 90):  how to make more effective use of resources including management time,  how to improve a product's appeal to customers,  how to increase staff motivation,  how to identify new business opportunities,  how to improve the quality of production output,  defining the vision/mission/objectives of the organization, and  looking for a new organization of work flows. Carolee is in her home doing her daily chores when suddenly she looks out her window to find many policeman, police dogs and police cars outside on her street. Carolee did not know what was happening so she continued on with her chores. In a few moments Carolee notices a young man drenched in blood in her garden outside. Carolee wants to call the police but questions what good it would be considering they are already on her street. She wants to call someone but none of her neighbors were home. Setting The story takes place in a neighborhood that i estimate is quite small considering Carolee knows her neighbors are gone. The setting revolves around Carolee's home. Her doing her chores in her home and the suspect roaming around outside. The setting influences the story a lot because it influences Carolee's reaction to what happened. She had never seen anything like that in person and it opened her eyes to how society really is. Conflict In the story there are 3 types of conflict, Person vs. Self, Person vs. Society and Person vs. Person. Person vs. Self would come in when Carolee had to decide what she was gonna do. Would she call the police or help the person or just leave well alone. Person vs. Society would be the police force against the suspect. Finally Person vs. Person would be when the suspect shot the other police officer and when he was getting shot at. St.Croix 3 Symbolism I believe that Carolee symbolises many people in our society at the moment. People who are oblivious to what is actually happening and how our society functions. Her reaction to what happened how the police came into her neighborhood and how the man was drenched in blood and was tumbling around showed lack of experience. Like lack of knowledge of what was actually going on. Literary Devices In the story the author used foreshadowing. The foreshadowing came in when Carolee heard the dogs barking. "Two little dickie birds, Sitting on a wall; One named Peter, One named Paul. Fly away Peter! Fly away Paul! Come Back Peter! Come Back Paul!" Traditional Throughout 'Fly Away Peter' Malouf utilises a variety of literary techniques such as contrast, Imagery, Symbolism and foreshadowing to portray ideas and themes. Moulaf has used the lines; "One named Peter, One named Paul" to link the characters of the book to the religious views and ways of living in the 1960's. In the 1750's the rhyme 'Two Little Dickie Birds' talked of two birds names Jack and Gill, in the early 1900's the names were changed to the disciples 'Peter and Paul'. In 'Fly away Peter' Moulaf has used this link between the birds name to introduce the religious connections. The bird peter symbioses Jim and Paul symbolises Ashley in the context of 'Fly away Peter'. Throughout the novel Moulaf uses the literary technique of narration to tell parts of the story. Microcapsules Essay Layer–by–Layer Approach for Making Microcapsules Muhammad Faiz Omar (201308264) 4th December 2014 Abstract The fabrication of hollow multilayer microcapsules in the beginning is initiated by layer–by–layer (LbL) self–assembly technique of oppositely charged polyelectrolyte on colloidal template followed by core decomposition. The main concept of microencapsulation is to protect the contents of fabricated microcapsules from the harmful environment in which it is surrounded. In this literature review, I shall outline the technique of microcapsules encapsulation employing LbL approach, lists of polyelectrolytes and templates and application of microcapsules. Introduction Over the past decades, nanometre–sized or known as microcapsules have been benefited the approach of Layer–by–Layer(LbL) technique due to the ability of tailoring their properties(e.g., size , shape, colloidal stability, surface–functionality, composition) that are biocompatible and biodegradable.1–3,10They are broadly used in many applications including food technologies, cosmetics, textiles industry and pharmaceuticals. The LBL assembly of multilayers are fundamentally built up by the alternating deposition of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes onto a sacrificial template such that the charge oscillates between positive and negative with each layer.1,4 The establishment of nanocoatings using LbL assembly method distinguishes itself in its intelligibility compared to the more conventional method. William Wordsworth's poem titled "Surprised by Joy" and William Blake's poem, "The Sick Rose" employs a range of poetic techniques to highlight the pain that love can create. On the other hand, John Clare's poem titled "First Love" and Robert Burns's poem, "A Red, Red Rose" contrastingly explore the theme of love as a positive to be celebrated. William Wordsworth's poem titled "Surprised by Joy" is a sonnet which uses simile, personification, metaphor, emotive language and a question to highlight the pain love can create. The poet uses the simile "impatient as the wind" to emphasize the fact that life is like the wind, it comes and goes as it pleases. In this case, the "wind" is used as a symbol for 'life'. "Silent tomb" is a personification which shows that his love, being his daughter, is dead and cannot respond to him. The metaphor "have I been so beguiled as to be blind" is used to highlight the grief and pain his daughter's death has caused him. "Grievous love" is an emotive language which is used to show how much heartache and misery love can bring us when it is lost. The question "how could I forget thee?" is used in this poem to stress the importance of his memories of his deceased daughter which being the only thing that he has of her. The poet successfully expresses his opinion on how much pain love can create through his use of various poetic techniques. • 40. The Dragon Who We Soon Discover I had qualms at first about how exactly to complete a task such as this, being that my experience with this type of writing is limited at best. However, I will confess there is much fun to be found in the fanciful wordplay. Not only are we asked to fill in a piece of the story, requiring knowledge of the plot line at this point in the story, but the task also prompts a deeper understanding of the literary devices and influences present in this style of writing. A task of this nature not only familiarizes students with both the plot line and the technical aspects of the writing, but also fosters an opportunity to incorporate creativity and merge all of these dynamic fragments into a single masterpiece. To begin, I considered the surrounding plot of the story. Just before the section begins we learn of the dragon who we soon discover is a major player in this epic tale. Thus far in the story the dragon has played a rather dormant role. Beowulf has been ruling the kingdom for over 50 years and we have heard not a single mention of the beast that sleeps as he guards his sparkly trove of wealth. At this point we are also introduced to an escaped slave who wakes the fiery beast by stealing a gem– studded goblet from the lair. He claims that his thievery was in fact accidental, and so proceeds the tale of his misadventures in the earthen pit. His story recounts that as he was escaping the chains of slavery he unknowingly stumbled upon the lair, by chance finding himself amid the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The connection of the community and individuals is shown by Campion in The Communities' residents' reaction to the fire in yackandandah forest.'Skinny, Slippery Path' (pg 41) is the use of alliteration by campion to show how dangerous the experience of a bushfire real is and the things they would have to overcome to be able to save themselves and others they cared about. Campion also uses Repetition 'Burn me hands because it doesn't work, it doesn't work like it does in the movies.' (pg 41) this conveys that they done what they need/had to do to save the animals that the cared dearly as her plan did not work according to her plan. An additional example of this would be ' Then as that roar got closer you couldn't hear a thing' (pg 42) this is alliteration, of the word 'roar' which show that the fire was very loud and dangerous as it came closer to them in the mineshaft. This shows that no matter how dangerous the situation got the community would do there best to keep ... Analysis Of ' The Pearls On A String ' Out of all the amazing things I saw in the Pearls on a String, the one that I found the most interesting was Akbar and 'Abd al–Rahim, from the Akabarmana (Book of Akabr, 1586–1589). It is amazing to see how many different scenes can all occur in one piece. Overall, The Book of Akbar had multiple outstanding pieces but the emotion in this particular page is what caught my attention. Although I did not study the other pages as intensely as this one, it is clear to see that Abul Fazlt's technique is spectacular throughout each and every page. This painting is historical, depicting a young Abdul Rahim Khan–I–Khana being received by Akbar after his family was killed. A great story is told throughout the entire book, although this particular image has more of an intensity to it. This page functions as a devotional image in order to display the emotional trauma 'Abd al–Rahim must have felt having all that he knew dragged from under him. This occurrence after royal bloodshed subsequently sets a mood for the piece. Some of the painting is hard to depict, due to some men appearing respectful and embracing while others appeared with contempt. This page is taller than wide with a beautiful background paper designs. The placement of the piece is harmonious in every way possible. In paying attention to the placement more emphasis is put onto the central area of the painting. The frame compliments the shape of the piece allowing it to bring your focus back after the eye wanders around ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What exactly is the meaning of stress, and how does it affect the daily lives of people? Stress can be defined as an unpleasant state of emotional and physiological arousal that people experience in situations that they either perceive as dangerous or threatening to their well being(Morrow 2011). A person can under go stress through out their daily lives, and for many, stress is so common place that is has become a way of life. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Stress and Gender The physiology of the stress response is similar for everyone. Researchers believe that there are distinct differences in the way women and men experience and respond to stress(e.g., Bekker, &. Boselie, K, 2002). Community surveys taken in many countries find women consistently report greater distress than men do in study of roughly 1,100 American adults that appeared in The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, found that women were more likely than men to experience ongoing stress and feel that their lives were out of their control (e.g., Bekker, &. Social responsibilities typically handled by women some of which including child care, care of older relatives, and housework are exposes of more abundant opportunities for distress(e.g., Bekker, &. In a UCLA study analyzed data from hundreds of biological and behavioral studies concluded that females were more likely to deal with stress by nurturing those around them and reaching out to others(e.g., Bekker, &. • 48. Reflection On Productivity Sometimes I make the analogy that being organized or productive is similar to being fit. It's not about eating healthy one day or going for one five–mile run. It's about making a thousand choices a day to take tiny actions that over time add up to leading a fit lifestyle. Being productive means making the right choices over and over again, a thousand times a day with the most minute decisions and actions. Thinking of productivity as a lifestyle is what led me to find it so interesting. "What we know increases productivity is so rarely what we do!" What projects are you involved in? My main project is writing a weekly column, but I also test software and fitness technology to write reviews of them. I'm also writing a book about productivity that aims to bridge the gap between research on how to maximize our efficiency and our daily practices. What we know increases productivity is so rarely what we do! I'm interested in why that's the case, as well as how we can conscientiously make the choice to follow advice regarding what works. How many meetings do you normally have each week? On average, I attend about one meeting each week. I have a standing invitation to join one particular meeting every Monday via Skype, and I join it about 50 percent of the time, mostly to keep in contact with a few particular people. If I'm working on an article that requires research, I might have a phone interview or two. Roughly once a month I'll do a spot on TV, radio or a podcast– this sometimes ... All throughout Act 1 the reader is given the idea of how poor Guellen is and everyone is so humble and local. For example, how the train no longer stops in Guellen, how people only buy cheap local brands at the shop and not imported, how they accept Ill as dead for Claire's one million, how Ill is the most popular personality. Some of these steps are more prominent in the process, but as a whole these steps assist in the creating of a clear and well–written paper. To help demonstrate the writing process in simpler way I will relate it to something that is well known to most teenagers, that being food. Not just food but also the process of preparing food in specific the process of creating a stir–fry. In the writing process the first step consists of a pre–writing stage. Pre–writing can be explained in the form of an outline or notes about the writing assignment you will begin shortly. In congruence with the pre writing stage, creating a stir–fry uses similar procedures. So to start off the stir–fry process you must first gather your ingredients. • 66. Thomas Hardy's The Convergence Of The Twain Thomas Hardy's The Convergence Of The Twain The poem The Convergence of the Twain, by Thomas Hardy, is about the sinking of the Titanic. The title alone describes the ship and the iceberg meeting as one. By choosing this title, the author automatically conveys a seriousness of the poem. The author uses various literary techniques to convey his mockery and careless attitude towards the sinking of the ship. In the first five stanzas, the author discusses the already submerged ship. ?Stilly couches she,? describes the ship resting on the bottom of the ocean. The lines, ?Jewels in joy designed?lie lightless, all their sparkles bleared and black and blind?, point out the waste of money, technology and craftsmanship going down with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also all the jewels that were present on the ship, being worn by first–class passengers were now sitting at the bottom of the ocean floor. The usage of irony represents the loss of the ship, instead of the loss of life. These lines are indicative of the author?s attitude towards what the ship stood for. He didn?t want to talk about the tragedy with all the lives lost, instead he concentrates on the ship and the iceberg meeting. In stanzas VI, VII, and VIII, it is clear about the destination of the ship and the iceberg colliding. In stanza VI, while the ship was moving along, very confidently, God was putting forth his plan. In stanza VII, the iceberg was sitting off in the distance just waiting for the convergence. In stanza VIII, it describes the final meeting between the two objects. As the ship grew closer and closer to the iceberg, and also in its confidence, the iceberg was also growing in its confidence and meaning. The ship thought that it was over God and didn?t need to worry about anything, so God responded back with the fate of the objects to show that he had more power than the ship, and to sort of show who?s ?boss?. The attitude of the author was very indifferent. He chose not to talk about the tragic lives lost in the poem, but rather the ships loss. Through his use of diction, personification, and irony, he gives the idea that it was all just destiny, and there was nothing that the ship could do. God ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 68. The Rabbinic Approach : Genesis 11 : 1 The rabbinic approach is the rabbis and religious people's point of view on a story. Studying the rabbinic approach can add to the understanding of Genesis 11:1–9 because rabbis compare texts to other texts in the Tanakh or verses of a text. They look for the similarities to help us interpret the story. This makes us compare characters or words said throughout the story. This helps us understand the text better. For example, the rabbinic approach compares Genesis 11:4 with Genesis 11:2. the people built the tower to show independence from G!d and show they didn't need g!d anymore. The rabbinic approach gets this interpretation from Genesis 11:3. This relates to Genesis 4 "Come let us build for ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the skies." They wanted to build the tower themselves to how independence as the rabbinic approach points out. They thought that they didn't need G!D anymore and building this successfully would prove that. But they did need G!d everyone needs G!D. The rabbinic approach says Building the tower to show independence is bad because they didn't any longer worship and except g!D. Everyone needs G!d and the fact that they thought they didn't need G!D was bad because he is above us. This part of the rabbinic approach will help us understand the story because it is a very helpful fact to know in understanding the text when it. The lesson this part of the rabbinic approach teaches us to be loyal and respect G!d as our G!D. In addition, we should ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Flannery O’Connor’s 'A Good Man is Hard to Find' Essay Flannery O'Connor had her roots set in Milledgeville, Georgia, which happens to be one of many states that when combined, form what is known as the "Bible Belt" of America. In respect to this, O'Connor talks about her beliefs: "This means that for me the meaning of life is centered in our Redemption by Christ and what I see in the world I see in relation to that" (O'Connor 482–483). As O'Connor was a devout Catholic, violence was not a direct preaching, but Joyce Carol Oates writes that "succumbing to the divine through violence . . . is immediate and irreparable" (O'Connor 483). By utilizing the element of setting, to surround the reader in Southern culture and heritage; as well as her blunt use of foreshadowing, to keep the action ... Bailey and his wife are up in the front seats of the car, and since the grandmother is in the back with the two kids, where her sphere of socialization and influence are more prominent, the kids are learning her bad habits after all through imitation and desensitization. All the settings are revolving around the grandmother, the protagonist, and they are placing her on a road to hell, paved in her own narcissism and condescending behavior. The foreshadowing provided by O'Connor is an unmistakably blunt literary device incorporated in the story to give a sense of what will happen next, without giving it completely away. This in turn has the rising action turn into rising suspense as well. The grandmother is wearing an extremely fancy set of clothing, to include white cotton gloves, so that "[i]n case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady" (O'Connor 498). The grandmother had actually dressed for her death in this regard, a most unusual way to pick your outfit for the day, it could only foreshadow the upcoming events and run in with The Misfit. "'She wouldn't stay at home for a million bucks,' June Star said. 'Afraid she'd miss something'" (O'Connor 498). The fact that the grandmother really didn't want to go on this trip to Florida ... • 74. My Expeirences with the Foot-in-the-Door Phenomenon As a class we have covered numerous concepts, theories and techniques in chapters six, through eight and eleven in our textbooks and in class lectures. The concept in which has intrigued me so far in the semester of social psychology is the foot–in–the–door phenomenon. The foot–in–the–door phenomenon is described in our textbooks as "the tendency for people who have first agreed to a small request to comply later with a large request" (Virginia Commonwealth University, 2013). It can be understood as asking someone (i.e. friend, family member, co–worker or stranger) agreeing to do a small service for you then later they are more willing to agree to a larger favor that you ask of them. Most of this phenomenon is based on how you present the first small request to the targeted person. Your initial attitude follows the behavior. The foot–in–the–door phenomenon is a persuasion strategy used to manipulate someone to submit to your requests. It starts off as an insignificant gradual process and before you know it you are giving a lot of support or service to someone without noticing it right away. This technique is seen regularly in public organizations like charities. An example would be a charity would ask the public to sign a petition or wear a button to support the organization. After this small request the campaigner then goes back after a week (give or take) and asks for a donation. The person then feels obligated to give to the charity after submitting to the initial ... • 76. Criminal Investigators and Interrogations-Interviews To find the truth in any interview/interrogation it takes a skilled and qualified investigator. Criminal Investigators continue to learn every day. They find new techniques to approach an interview/interrogation, they learn new ways to talk to people, and the success of their interviews/interrogations depends on their ability to take what they learn and apply it. In order to develop great interview and interrogation skills, one must be able to communicate well verbally and non–verbally, be able to read body language, and know the facts of their case to be able to ask the right questions. To be a successful Criminal Investigator, one needs to have great interrogation/interview skills. During interviews/interrogations a Criminal Investigator needs to listen and observe. Listening to verbal behavior helps the investigator determine whether or not the individual is speaking the truth or lying. When an investigator asks questions, it is crucial for them to watch how the individual reacts to those questions. According to John Reid Associates, there are cues to look for and listen for when conducting an interrogation/interview. Some cues are clearing of the throat, deep breathing/sighing, and nervous laughing. During interviews/interrogations, Criminal Investigators need to be able to read body language. Body language is a key factor in determining if an individual is lying. When an individual is lying they show signs indicating the question that was asked sparked an ... • 78. A Critical Analysis of "Revelation" by Flannery O'Connor... A Critical Analysis of "Revelation" by Flannery O'Connor Flannery O'Connor's background influenced her to write the short story " Revelation." One important influence on the story is her Southern upbringing. During her lifetime, Southerners were very prejudiced towards people of other races and lifestyles. They believed that people who were less fortunate were inferior to them; therefore, people were labeled as different things and placed into different social classes. The South provided O'Connor with the images she needed for her characters. Similarly, this can easily be identified in her short story "Revelation." The characters in the story are identified by physical characteristics and some are even identified with racial terms. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Turpin all her life. Another element of plot which reinforces the theme of "Revelation", is the element of surprise which actually brings the main conflict out in the open. O'Connor brings the conflict out well because the incidents that built up to the actual conflict do not give away what is going to happen. The action around the conflict is completely surprising and unpredictable. We are aware the girl dislikes Mrs. Turpin because of her previous actions. The girl never does anything other than give dirty looks; therefore, we are not expecting any type of physical violence between them. When the girl hits Mrs. Turpin in the face with the book, Mrs. Turpin is conversing with another character and is not talking to the girl. In this situation, a violent act by the girl is completely unpredictable. Also, O'Connor uses an unhappy ending for this story. Mrs. Turpin, who is happy being who she is, does not understand why the girl hated her. She does not think she is a bad person, and she cannot comprehend why she is not liked. O'Connor ends the story with Mrs. Turpin's questions unanswered which leaves her with a sadness that is unsolvable. Through the use of social conflict, the element of surprise, and an unhappy ending, a believable plot is created. To further develop the theme, O'Connor uses consistent behavior, clear motivation, and plausibility to create convincing characterization. The protagonist, Mrs. Turpin, is convincing because she consistently ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
