Essay On The Lost Colony Of Roanoke
The lost colony of Roanoke is a controversial topic because no one is sure about what happened to the colony. The lost colony was a colony founded
by Walter Raleigh established in 1585 on Roanoke Island which is now North Carolina. The colony disappeared without a trace sometime between
1587 and 1590. There are many theories about what happened to the colony but there is no conclusive answer. The lost colony of Roanoke is one of
the biggest and oldest American mysteries because of the uncertainty surrounding the circumstances of its disappearance. On the 25th of March, 1584 a
charter was issued to Walter Raleigh from Queen Elizabeth I. The charter issued stated that Raleigh was "to discover, search, finde out, and view such
remote, heathen and barbarous lands, countries, and territories, not actually possessed of any Christian Prince, nor inhabited by Christian ... Show more

It drew the attention of David Phelps who was a professor from East Carolina university. He then conducted digs in the area and found a gold ring and
gun lock, which he believed to be solid evidence that the settlers integrated with the natives (Hampton). The gold ring was examined and determined by
researchers John Brooke–Little and Barbara Hird to have the crest of the Kendall family on it. There were two men that had the surname Kendall that
were apart of the attempts at colonizing Roanoke. One, however, was picked up by Sir Francis Drake (Family Crest on Sixteenth–Century Gold Ring
Tentatively Identified). Though this was never confirmed and the artifact was found with other artifacts dating around 1670–1720. However Phelps
never tested the ring. And in April 2017, it was announced by Charles Ewen, who tested the ring, found that it was all brass and not gold. Ewen said
it's probably a common item that was traded to the Natives after lost colony disappeared (Lawler). This was yet another dead end in the quest to

The Last Colony Of Roanoke
The Last Colony of Roanoke
Five hundred years ago, European explorers landed in North America. After trying to locate a new route to Asia across the Atlantic Ocean, they found
a continent they did not know existed. Three different groups traveled to the New World, starting in 1584 (Basu, Tanya). The last group included Gov.
John White, he had to return to England to submit his report to the Queen. John White tried several times to return to Virginia, but it wasn't until a
few years later he was finally able to return to his new home. In 1584, when White was finally able to return, the land was barren and deserted of
people. This baffling revelation began one of the greatest mysteries of all time.

Raleigh sent out two small troops lead by Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe to scout out a new inhabitable area (Horn, James). They arrived on the
outer banks a few months later in August, 1585 (Carpenter, Jeannine). They were the first English explorers to set eyes on North Carolina (The Lost
Colony). Within days after Lanes return to Roanoke Island from Weapemeoc, he wrote historian and geographer Richard Hakluyt that they had:
"discovered the mainland to be the goodliest soil under the cope of heaven, so abounding with sweet trees, that bring such sundry rich and most
pleasant gummes, grapes of such greatness, yet wild, as France, Spain nor Italy hath no greater" (Carpenter, Jeannine). One of the islands they
persuade looked like a perfect island to settle. In another letter he sent to Sir Francis Walsingham, secretary to Queen Elizabeth, Lane seems to have
enclosed a crude map, its legends revealing a "great store of fish" and "great red grapes very pleasant" there (Carpenter, Jeannine). This island was
Roanoke, ten miles long and two and a half miles wide. These were all reasons why the Roanoke colonists would have been able to establish a long
term residence there.
They returned to England a year later with two Natives, Manteo and Wanchese (The Lost Colony). With them they brought back plentiful information
about the new lands they discovered. Among the information

The Roanoke island is located off the coast of present day North Carolina. There are many questions about where the people went and what happened
to them. One of the main clues as to what happened was the word "CROATOAN" carved into the trunk of a tree. Some people think that the colonists
travelled inland, tried to join an Indian tribe or they traveled to an island called Croatoan. The island was found by Sir Walter Raleigh who was sent by
Queen Elizabeth. When the crew came back with the good news, they began gathering groups of people willing to settle in the new island called
Roanoke. Researchers are always finding more details about where the colonists could have gone, what the word "croatoan" means and why the
colonists left. In this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then we would look at surrounding area or colonies. But, if we were in a person from the lost colony shoes and John White still had not returned
then we would go join a native american tribe. We would join a tribe because without resources/ things we need to live then how are we going to
survive. Also, the Native Americans would give us food, clothing, resources, hospitality and protection. By doing this, we would have a more
likelihood of surviving until John White got back rather than dying because we would have had to wait for John White. If we were the people who
were on charge of putting the word croatoan on a tree we would describe more than what they did. Say we were going to Croatoan Island then we
would put on the tree Croatoan Island, if we joined a Native American tribe we would put Joined Native Tribe. So, we basically would carve on the

1.What did the architects of the Roanoke Colony expect to achieve there? What did they in fact do to turn those hopes into reality? The architect's of
the Roanoke colony, also known as the West Countrymen, hoped to accomplish many goals in the America's. Some of the goals they had are
represented in the following: exploring and potentially finding a new route to Asia, challenge the dominance of Imperial Spain by also establishing
colonies in the America's, discover new commodities that will be useful in England, and improve personal profit. In order to achieve these goals a few
steps were taken by the countrymen. Sir Walter Ralegh hired Arthur Barlowe and Philip Amadas to scout the American coast in order to find the prime
spot for a colony.

In 1998, an archaeologist at the College of William and Mary named Dennis Blanton published a paper in Science reporting the results of a tree ring
analysis of some very, very old bald cypresses in Virginia. Blanton himself described his findings as "incredible:" The worst drought in 800 years
took place in the three years after the colonists arrived at Roanoke. The absolute worst season occurred in 1587, right after White left for England.
Archeologist and researchers have found many clues to theories but a certain answer to the mystery of Roanoke colony disappearance has not been yet

Scientist believe it will lead them to the answer weather it was a disease or just a mass killing. Another theory was they all committed a mass
suicide due to being neglected by the English. They felt neglected because after many request for food and supplies England did not respond. It's also
believed that they were unhappy with life in the colony of Roanoke after having to deal with lack of supplies, food, and constant attacks lead by the
Native Americans. Other theory suggest that Roanoke was destroyed by a severe storm such as a

What Happened to the Colony of Roanoke
America has one of the oldest unsolved mystery's dating back to 1587. To this day no one knows exactly what happened to the lost colony of
Roanoke. (History.com 1) There are several theories as to what happened, but there is no definite proof. This is a display of the theories and history of
Roanoke. In July of 1587, 116 settlers were sent to Roanoke under John White, who was the governor.
This was the second colony attempted at Roanoke Island, off the coast of North Carolina. The first attempt was conducted by Sir Walter Raleigh in
1585. Raleigh soon abandoned this quest because they had not been prepared. They returned to England in 1586. The next year John

The colonist was George Howe. No one knows exactly how he died it is also a mystery. During this time John White was asked to leave for supplies
from England, by the colonists. (Miller) Approximately 50 miles away there was another island named Hatteras. The Croatoan Indians lived on this
Island. (History.com 1) Since then their name has changed and they are now known as the Lumbee Indians. (Waldman) History scholars say the
Lumbee Indians were friendly and helped the colonists. Archeologists have found evidence in recent years that leads to where the colonists went.
They have found artifacts from the time period of Roanoke that only the colonists could have left. The artifacts support the theory of the colonists
splitting into two groups. This evidence is not solid, but it is a clue as to what might have happened. (Thiessen) John White had reluctantly left the
colonists for supplies in England. He did not want to leave the colonists during this time of uncertainty. George Howe's death remained unclear. John
White instructed the colonists if you move carve on a tree where you moved too. If you are in distress leave a cross on the tree. Relations between

The Roanoke colony
The Roanoke colony was an attempt by Queen Elizabeth I to establish a permanent English settlement in the late 16th century. It is also referred to as
"the lost colony" because the colonists disappeared during the Anglo – Spanish war three years after the last shipment of supplies from England. There
is no conclusive evidence as to what happened to the colonists.

The project was originally organized and funded by Sir Humphrey Gilbert, until he met an untimely death in 1583 during an aborted attempt to colonize
St. John's, Newfoundland. It was then handed down, by the Queen, to Sir Humphrey's half–brother, Sir Walter Raleigh.

Despite this incident and a lack of food, Grenville decided to leave Ralph lane and 107 men to set up a colony at the north end of Roanoke Island,
promising to return in April 1586 with more men and fresh supplies. The group left on August 17, 1585, and built a small fort on the island. There
aren't pictures of the Roanoke fort, but it was probably similar in structure to the one in Guayanilla Bay.
As April 1586 passed, there was no sign of Grenville's relief fleet. Meanwhile, in June, bad blood resulting from their destruction of the village caused
an attack on the fort by the local Native Americans, which the colonists were able to repel. Soon after the attack, Sir Francis Drake, on his way home
from a successful raid in the Caribbean, stopped at the colony and offered to take the colonists back to England. Many accepted, including metallurgist
Joachim Gans. On this return voyage, the Roanoke colonists introduced tobacco, maize, and potatoes to Europe. The relief fleet arrived shortly after
Drake's departure with the colonists. Finding the colony abandoned, Grenville returned to England with the majority of his force, leaving behind a
small detachment both to maintain an English presence and to protect Raleigh's claim to Roanoke

Introduction It was generally assumed that Roanoke would become the first of many permanent English settlements in the New World; however, those
assumptions would prove false after the colonists who travelled there disappeared under mysterious circumstances. For over 400 years, the mystery of
the "Lost Colony" has endured in the Chesapeake region of America and has yet to be definitively solved. Beginning in the 1580s, a series of ventures
and ill–fated colonization attempts laid the context and set the stage for the greatest vanishing act in American history. From supply shortages and
unfavorable weather, to misunderstandings and violent interactions with the indigenous people – all three attempts to settle at Roanoke Island were
thwarted in one fashion or another. The third colonization attempt would not prove to be a "charm" for England, as these 118 colonists disappeared
with little evidence of what had happened to them.
Background
There were several factors that influenced Queen Elizabeth I of England to grant Sir William Raleigh a charter to colonize North America on March
25, 1584 (Mallios p.59). Tensions between the English and Spanish governments were strained at the time that this charter was granted. England and
Spain hoped to achieve several, competing goals by colonizing the New World. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

In the late 16th century, Queen Elizabeth I was looking to make a permanent settlement in North America. The Roanoke island, in present day North
Carolina became the first European settlement in the New World. It was founded by English explorer Sir Walter Raleigh in August 1585. The
settlement at Roanoke Island involved three Voyages. The First Voyage by SirWalter Raleigh was done to navigate and explore the area to find a
proper location to settle. It was during this voyage the decision was made to settle at Roanoke Island. The initial plan was to settle at Chesapeake
Bay but in order to find new natural resources Roanoke Island was selected. Later, on the second voyage Sir Richard Grenville was tasked with
establishing a military colony. This colony was later abandoned and the people returned to England. Then it was the third voyage of Sir Walter Raleigh

Analysis Of The Lost Colony Of Roanoke
The colony of Roanoke is generally known as England's first attempt to begin a civilized and stable colony in the unexplored parts of earth known
as the New World. Sadly, the plan to colonize Roanoke Island didn't go exactly as the British planned. The colonists had high hopes to find new
things to take back to England to make profit off of and be the first to obtain life in the New World. Things started off well for the new colony, but
the colonists began to have issues with the new people they had discovered on the island known as the Croatan and Secotan Indian's. After
multiple attempts of trying to succeed at living a sustainable life in the New World the colony of Roanoke failed to exist when John White returned
to the colony in 1590 and found not a single soul on the island. No one to this day is quite sure what happened to the remaining colonist's that were
last seen on the island before John White left or any of the two Indian tribe's that had once lived there. The article I selected, "America's Lost
Colony: Can New Dig Solve Mystery?" by Willie Drye from National Geographic News, discusses the story of the Lost Colony of Roanoke and the
recent clues that have been found that could support several different theories of what happened to the colony. Drye starts by giving readers a little
background information about how England hoped to find new things to bring back and trade as well as to create a stable colony in the New World
back in the 1580s and 90s. Today the

The Lost Colony of Roanoke
Queen Elizabeth I desired to establish a permanent English settlement in America, known then as "the New World." In the summer of 1587 a group
of nearly 120 men and women from England arrived on Roanoke Island, one of a chain of barrier islands now known as the Outer Banks, off the
coast of what is now known as North Carolina. This group of settlers set sail from England with the mission of making the Queen's wishes a reality.
John White was appointed Governor of the colony by Sir Walter Raleigh. Sometime later, Governor White set sail for England to gather supplies for
the colony. "Before he had left for England, White and the colonists had discussed leaving the settlement and founding the city of Raleigh on the
mainland, so the fact that the colonists were no longer in the settlement would not have been surprising to White. The colonists also worked out
signals to communicate with those who were coming to their assistance. For example, if they left due to an attack, they were supposed to carve a
Maltese cross over their doorposts to signal that they were in distress. Alternatively, if they left to try to find a more suitable place, they were supposed
to carve the names of the areas they would be traveling through so that White would be able to find them upon his ... Show more content on

Disappearance Of The Roanoke Colony
The Roanoke Colony was a colony that seemed to disappear in 1950. There are many theories about what happened to the colony, but the theory
that they colonized into other settlements around them is the most probable. The disappearance of the colony is why it earned the name "the lost
colony" In 1584 on March 25th, Queen Elizabeth told Sir Walter Raleigh to start a colony in North america. Raleigh started his expedition with
Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe to start and explore the eastern coast of North America on April 27, 1584. They ended up arriving on July 4th
and created relations with the locals, the Secotans and Croatans. They then returned to England, however, Raleigh was not done. He organized a
second expedition that was led by Sir Richard Grenville. Grenville departed on April 9, 1585 with 5 main ships. They were all to meet up in Puerto
Rico. Then in 1587 Raleigh had 100 or so colonists to start the Roanoke colony but eventually the ran out of supplies. Raleigh and John Watts went on
an expedition and agreed to stop back to Roanoke after raiding the Spanish and Caribbean. When they came back the settlement had
vanished.(History.com Staff) This was very significant because over 100 people just vanished without leaving any info about where they actually went.

that was the most mysterious is the Roanoke colony, also known as the Lost Colony. The colony got this name because the colonists that were there

Reluctant to give up, he turned to private investors to finance another expedition. In 1585 his cousin, Sir Richard Grenville, was picked up to be the
leader of a group to establish a colony on Roanoke. With him were 100 soldiers, craftsmen, and scholars to try and settle the colony. Under direction of
Ralph Lane, the colony was doomed from the beginning.
The settlers had arrived late in the season which made it almost impossible to plant crops and supplies were depleting and to make things worse, Lane,
a captain alienated the surrounding tribes and killed their chief over a stolen cup. After Ralph Lane and his men had had enough, they left the
settlement and their fort not knowing that only a week later a supply ship from England had arrived. Finding the island deserted, the leader left fifteen
men behind to hold the fort and went back to England for reinforcements.
In England, on January 7, 1587, a document allowing a government body to be created was signed and passed. This body was named the Governor
and Assistants of the City of Roanoke in Virginia. Jon White, a skilled illustrator and map maker, was appointed Governor. On May 5, 1587 Raleigh
decided to try again and boarded 117 men, seventeen women, and nine children for a more permanent settlement and sent them to the New World.

Causes Of The Lost Colony Of Roanoke
"The lost colony of Roanoke is one of the most–notorious mysteries in American history; the cryptic clues left at the abandoned settlement and the
lack of any concrete evidence make it the focus of wild speculation and theories". Within three years what would have been the first permanent
English colony that was formed in the New World disappeared in 1590, only leaving two small clues behind. The colony mayor John White returned
to the island to discover the word "Croatoan" had been carved into the palisade surrounding the settlement as well as "Cro" carved into a nearby tree.
It appeared as if the colonists had disassembled all buildings, packed up, and left without a trace. Throughout extensive research and sweeping the
island there have been no remains or signs of Indian attacks found leaving one mysterious question unanswered: what was the cause of the
disappearance of the Roanoke colony and where did they go? Roanoke was the first English settlement in the New World, founded in August of 1585
by the English explorer Sir Walter Raleigh. The first colony suffered the usual lack of food supplies and Indian attacks, forcing them to return to
England in 1586 on a ship that was captained by Sir Francis Drake. However, the following year Raleigh had made the decision to send another hundred
colonists under the oversight of John White. The same situation that forced the original Roanoke colonists to return home began to trouble the new
colony. Later that year the colonists

region failed due to scarce food and constant Indian advances, causing the settlers to return to England in 1586. Raleigh later sent out Sir John White to
help try to colonize the region along with 100 other colonists. This was the first attempt to try to successfully settle at the new colony. White left the
colony in 1587 to obtain more supplies in England, but he could not return to Roanoke until August of 1590 due to the war with Spain. When he

It is a logical idea that the colonists could of been infected with the new diseases they encountered in this new region they moved to. The colonists
also could have known to move away when they realized the effect the new diseases began to have on their community. Although this theory is
logical, there is little to no evidence to prove it could be true. Theses settlers were around more diseases where they originally lived than in the New
World, so it would have been more likely for the Native Americans to contract the diseases instead of the English. The English settlers most likely
contributed to the multitude of diseases brought to this area, meaning a disease they brought would not have wiped them out, instead wiping out the
Native Americans. Also, there were no remains found to prove the settlers were deceased on the land of Roanoke. All of their homes and things were
gone as well, which brings the idea that they deserted this colony without force. This theory is believed by few, but most people look at the evidence

the letters or name..". Consequently, in the same excerpt White points out that there was no sign of distress, only a tree with the carving of the word
CROTOAN. John White also records finding chests scavenged over by savages; "At our returne from the Creeke, some of our Saylers meeting us,
tolde us that they had found where divers chests had bene hidden, and long sithence digged up againe and broken up, and much of the goods in them
spoyled and scattered about, but nothing left, of such things as the Savages knew any use of, undefaced." Comparatively, these events point at one
outcome: The colonists left the island to pursue materials needed for survival, unable to take with them invaluable objects, and had assimilated with the
native peoples. Similarly, John White accounts for this saying,

needed to leave, they were faced with many challenges that could only be overcame by leaving the colony. Their biggest problem they faced was
drought their crops would not have been able to grow. Their main crop was most likely corn. Corn has an inability to grow in low water conditions.
Once their first crops failed there was no time to plant a new round of crops. Without their main food source they would have to gather and

This leads us to think that the lost colony went to many different tribes. A big thing supporting this is that if all the colonists went to one tribe the
tribe would have been overpopulated. That would be hundreds of people in one village. One of the villages that the lost colony might have gone to
Mattaquem. The location is very smart. From there they could go up the Chowan River to Virginia. There were lots of good tribes to trade with along
the Chowan River. Another place they could have gone is the Hatteras Island which were know as the Croatian Islands. The islands were 50 miles

Roanoke Island: the Lost Colony
Roanoke Island: The Lost Colony
Alycia Roberts
HIST113 VC
On July 22, 1587, long before the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth Rock, 117 hopeful colonists from England landed ashore onto a tiny island along the
coast of what is today North Carolina. The group unpacked and founded a settlement, Roanoke Island. Then they vanished without a trace. The story of
the Lost Colony has fascinated people across four centuries and remains one of the enduring mysteries of early America. There are several theories put
forth to explain the disappearance, but despite efforts by historians, archeologists, and other investigators, the fate of these early colonists seems
destined to remain a mystery. In the 16th century, many European nations wanted to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once again, supplies ran out, and White chose to return on his own to England to get more. When he landed in England, he found that his country
was getting ready for war with Spain. For the next two years, no ships or sailors were available for a return trip to Roanoke. It wasn't until August
1590, after the English defeated Spain, that White finally found ships to take him back to the colony (Horn, 2010). White and his men dropped anchor
off the Outer Banks of North Carolina and rowed toward the island. Crewman sounded familiar tunes on trumpets to alert the colonists, but not a single
human figure was seen. The landing party made its way through the woods to the settlement at the island's northern end. Bracing himself for the worst,
White entered the clearing where he had parted from the colonists, including his daughter, Eleanor Dare and his granddaughter, the first child born in
the colonies, Virginia Dare (Davis, 2009). He found the settlement deserted, weeds and vines sprouting where houses had once stood. The houses
themselves had been carefully dismantled and removed. Gone, too, were the fort's small cannon; buried chests were found, containing some of the
colonists' possessions. All the evidence suggested a planned and orderly withdrawal (McGill, 2009). White soon discovered the letters CRO carved on
a post at the entrance to the stockade, and the word CROATOAN carved into a tree trunk. This gave White reason to believe that the colonists had

How To Build A Roanoke Colony
We are on our journey to North America led by John Smith! We are planning to build another English colony. Some of the men are afraid we might
"disappear" like the Roanoke colony, which I have to admit I am too. But, we are still seeking gold and silver so we must continue. We were told
to find a river for a trade route connecting with the Pacific Ocean. All we have seen lately is water, water, and more water. I hope we reach land
soon and maybe even meet some natives! I don't know how much longer I can stand only seeing water! We've finally made it to land and have even
met some native Indians! They are so different from us, for example, there skin is a lot tanner than ours, they wear weird clothes, and instead of using
guns they use bow and

Essay on The Lost Roanoke Colony
Jamestown is thought by most of our general population to be the first colony in the New World. This is only half true. Jamestown is considered our
first successful colony, however it was not our first attempt at a colony. There were a few attempts to colonize the New World before Jamestown and
one in particular that is found to be interesting is Roanoke also known as the Lost Colony. It received this name due to the fact that the colonists that
settled this colony disappeared very mysteriously. This poses the question of What happened to the people of Roanoke? There are many different
viewpoints of what occurred to the colonists and the goal here is to address each one of them. In England, a document signed on January 7, 1587,

After about a month of unloading, Fernandes decided time was drawing near for his departure from the New World. With his departure imminent,
the colony faced a dilemma. White and his assistants all agreed that one of them needed to go back to England to secure additional supplies for the
colony. The one chosen to go was John White. On August 27, 1587, White set sail for England in the smaller of the ships with a crew of about
fifteen men. His journey was a treacherous one due to an accident at sea that injured twelve of his crew of fifteen , virtually disabling the ship.
However, thought to be a perilous journey, White finally arrived with news of the city of Raleigh. But there would not be a return voyage in six
months as expected. Spain had put together a mighty fleet of ships called the Spanish Armada. This caused Queen Elizabeth to order all English ships
discontinue normal business and join the effort to fight off the Spanish fleet. Due to this and other mishaps, White did not get back to the city of
Raleigh until August of 1597 which was three years later. Coincidentally, the colonist of Raleigh were gone just as the colonist of Greenville that were

In history, there are many interesting and intriguing things. It is how human
2 beings can figure out how far they have come from the beginning times where man was just learning to create fire to now where the technology
has never been more advanced. There are also many mysteries in history. There have always been mysteries in history and always will be. Some of
those mysteries are from hundreds of years ago, one of those being the lost colony of Roanoke. The lost colony of Roanoke occurred in August of
1585–1587 on an island off the coast of the state of North Carolina which was called Roanoke Island. What happened was once the island was
discovered by an Englishman, several explorations were made of the island in attempt to colonize the area. On the third attempt to colonize the area,
captain John White left to go back to England in order to get more supplies and reinforcements for the colony. It took White three years to return to
the island. One reason that it may have taken him so long to get back to Roanoke is because his map of Roanoke had the directions labeled
incorrectly. According to the article titled "John White searches for the colonists" it says "John White drew this map of the coast of North Carolina and
Virginia in 1585 and 1586. (Note that west, not north is up.)" Once he finally returned, the settlement was abandoned with no signs of life except for
the cabins that had been built. The only sign that something had happened to the colony was the

It started in 1583. Sir Humphrey Gilbert organized the enterprise. He ended up drowning while attempting to colonize St. John's, Newfoundland. Sir
Walter Raleigh, his half–brother, was chosen to take over. On March 25, 1584, Raleigh was granted a charter by Queen Elizabeth I to colonize in
North America. The first colony was established in 1584 on Roanoke Island, what is now Dare County,North Carolina, but over the course of two years
they went through some hardships. They thought the native village of Aquascogoc stole a silver cup, and thus attacked the village. They remained
anyway, even with the lack of food, and some men went back to England to grab more troops and supplies. In the meantime, from attacking the native
village, the colonists were attacked, but able to repel said attack. When Sir Francis Drake stopped by on the way back and volunteered to take the
colonists back to England, they agreed, leaving behind a couple men to protect Raleigh's claim to Roanoke. Thus was the first failure of the settlement

The Mystery Of The Lost Colony Of Roanoke
The mystery of the Lost Colony of Roanoke is a puzzling mystery about what happened to the first English settlers in America. The question is, what
actually happened to them, because even with evidence and research no one knows for absolute certain what actually did happen. The disappearance of
an entire colony, who left behind a dismantled settlement and the word "Croatoan" etched into a tree has stumped many archaeologists. Countless
theories have arisen, some more outrageous than the rest. Were they killed by Indians? Taken by aliens? Abducted? Sabotaged? The mystery of the
Lost Colony of Roanoke has an abundance of theories, but the most plausible is that the colonist were assimilated into the Lumbee tribe. Colonists
arrived on Roanoke Island in 1587, with the hopes of becoming the first English colony in America (Bernstein 2:55). The colony was to be
governed by John White and was composed of English families who wished to make a new home for themselves, among the colonists was John
White 's daughter, Virginia Dare. Several months later the colony 's governor sailed back to England for supplies. The shortage of supplies was due
to skirmishes with the Natives, loss of supplies due to storms, and with the time for planting over the colonists had no way to find enough food. John
White promised to return as quickly as possible, but due to unforeseen circumstances was unable to return as soon as was expected. Three years later,

In 1585 the colony of Roanoke was founded, captain John White left the colony to find soldiers, food, and supplies. However, when he left for
England a war was declared on Spain and England and he couldn't return until three years later, the colony of Roanoke during that time was lost
forever. We believe the colony was raided and pillaged by American Indians. In the carnage the American Indians captured and enslaved the colonists.
While staying with the Indians they were accepted over time and gradually absorbed into the tribe. This is why there is no trace of remains or
slaughter. When John White left the colony to get supplies from England, but could not get back in a timely fashion because of a war that broke out

I wouldn't only check the local ones. The survey would include all of the territory, because they could have started some sort of slave trading

surrounding area. Ie drawn some maps with location X as we refer to it. This map really just leads to the place known as La Virginea Pars where I
think the settlers could've likely gone. Although the Croatoan were known to be friendly the settlers could have angered them and given them reason
to kidnap the settlers. Yes, most of the supplies were still there, but most of it was modern technology that the Indian either didn't need or didn't
know how to use. We could go around and ask the Native Americans since they were allied with some of them. Sending a letter would be my first

The Lost Colony Of The Roanoke Colony
Roanoke, one of the first couple of colonies built in the New World is famous today even in American history due to the fact that it had completely
disappeared. Though there are many reasons as to why the colony may have disappeared no historian can place a finger on the direct cause of the
colonies disappearance. The colony of Roanoke was built due to how close that it was to Great Britain and After the exploration of Roanoke, It was
compared the island to the garden of Eden and how bountiful it was, supposedly deer, conies, hares and fowls had great numbers. ( Martha, Barlowe
2) this of course was perfect for a new colony, due to the fact that it could grow in strength and economy. Though there were many upsides to the colony
there were many downsides to it as well, mainly the Native American territory that surrounded the colony, this led to many fights and disagreements
between colonists and Native Americans and led many Historians to believe that Native Americans attacked theRoanoke Colony. Though nobody
knows what had happened to the lost colony of Roanoke, It can be believed that they might have moved as fear of the Native Americans attacking
loomed over them.
The colony of Roanoke was built on the coast of North Carolina, it was the first English settlement in North American, a man by the name of Walter

Summary Of The Lost Colony Of Roanoke
Years before Jamestown, in 1587 a man named John White and 117 men, women, and children sailed from England to the coast of what is now
North Carolina. They did this in hopes of starting a new colony on the untenated territory of Roanoke Island. They established a temporary
understanding with the native islanders and consummated the first baby in the New World, but soon afterwards problems arose. Supplies were
quickly becoming scarce and issues started to arise between the settlers and the natives of the land. White returned to England in despair asking for
help from Sir Walt Raleigh who had been the sponsor of the expedition. While he was successful in his voyage to convince Sir Walt by the time of his
return all the settlers had vanished off the face of the Island.
James Horn, a historian at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation writes the story of Roanoke colony onto paper in this intriguing book, " A Kingdom
Strange The Brief And Tragic History Of The Lost Colony Of Roanoke " Horn presents a persuasive hypothesis for what he believes must have
happened to the settlers that were said to have vanished. Using accessible information and resources Horn concluded that the settlers did not in fact
vanish or die, but rather just intermingle with the natives of the land. Horn proves his theories in his book by introducing a new perspective on how the
settlers intermixed with the natives and were discovered centuries later by returning colonists.

The Disappearance Of The Roanoke Island Colony
America's past is a mysterious one, riddled with unsolved questions and misleading legends. One of the most prominent enigmas that has haunted
historians for centuries is the disappearance of the Roanoke Island Colony, also known to many as The Lost Colony.
After leaving for three years, the governor of Roanoke Island, John White, returned to find the settlement abandon. The only remaining clue was the
word "CROATOAN" carved into a fence post and the letters "CRO" etched into a nearby tree. Several diverse theories have been suggested to explain
the disappearance of the 120 missing colonist, ranging from disease to natural disaster.
Any evidence supporting the various theories is weak, at best. However, the clues left behind point to the assimilation theory which proposes the
colonists integrated with the natives, as the Croatoan had been a friendly Native American tribe in the area. Furthermore, the majority of new facts and
the strongest evidence support the assimilation theory as well. Other common theories have numerous flaws in their logic that make them highly
improbable. It is because the only sign the colony left behind indicates assimilation, any new or outside evidence discovered also serves to further
prove assimilation, and all other theories suffer major inaccuracies that assimilation is the most probable theory.

In 1587, A group of colonists were sent by Sir Walter Raleigh to Roanoke Island in hopes of permanently settling. John White, the governor of this new

factor that caused the colonists to relocate was famine. John White left for England so he could bring resources back to the colonists on Roanoke Island.

The Roanoke Colony on Roanoke Island was an attempt by Queen Elizabeth I in the late 16th–century to make a permanent English settlement in the
New World. In March 1584, Queen Elizabeth granted Sir Walter Raleigh a charter for the colonization of the area of North America. This charter said
that Raleigh needed to create a colony in North America, or lose his right to colonization. In April 1584, Raleigh dispatched an expedition led by
Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe to explore the Eastern coast of North America. They arrived onRoanoke Island on July 4 and soon established

In 1587, Raleigh sent a new group of 115 colonists to establish a colony on Chesapeake Bay. John White, a friend of Raleigh who had accompanied
the previous expeditions to Roanoke, led them. White was later elected Governor and Raleigh named 12 assistants to aid in Roanoke 's settlement.
They were ordered to travel to Roanoke first to gather Grenville 's men, but when they arrived in July 1587, they found nothing except a skeleton that
may have been the remains of one of the English garrison. They were counting on these men to help with the new colony, but when they could find no
one, they gave up hope of ever seeing Grenville 's men alive. The fleet 's commander, Simon Fernandez, insisted that they establish the new colony on
Roanoke. White re–established relations with the Croatans and tried to establish friendly relations with the tribes Ralph Lane had battled the previous
year. The hostile tribes refused to meet with him. Shortly thereafter, colonist George Howe was killed by an Indian while searching alone for crabs in

For centuries, the Lost Colony of Roanoke Island has been a controversial issue. Many theories exist that explain the disappearance of the colony.
Some theories suggest that the colonists left the island to live with friendly neighboring Indians. Others suggest that a hurricane wiped out the colony

men and women left behind on Roanoke Island did not die because of massacre, disease, or starvation but went to live with the Croatoan Indians. In

Furthermore, physical proof indicates that after John White left the colony to return to England, the colonists intermarried with the Indians. According
to David Beers Quinn, author of Set Fair for Roanoke, the colonists and the Indians did intermarry (350). The colonists intermarrying with the Indians
would cause some of the offspring to have genetic traits unusual for Indians, such as blue eyes or light colored hair. In his article about the lost colony,
Scott Dawson writes that an explorer named John Lawson discovered blue eyed Indians dressed in English apparel; Dawson also says that the Indians
claimed to have "White" descendants (6). Therefore, by making Manteo lord of Roanoke and intermarrying with the Indians, the colonists proved their
strong relationship with the Croatoans.
Upon his return, John White met with no indications of the deaths of the colonists. Linda Kramer states that John White and the colonists agreed that
in the event of leaving Roanoke, the colonists in a noticeable location would engrave the name of the place to which they were departing and that an
engraving of a Maltese cross above the name of the location would signal leaving because of danger (3). When White returned to the colony after
three years of being absent, he discovered one of the signals the colonists promised to engrave if they left. The Article "Lost: An American Colony"

America's first greatest mystery has yet to be disclosed and only pieces of the events surrounding the enigma are known. The Lost Colony of Roanoke
has remained a worldwide mystery for almost four centuries and there have been many attempts at discovering what actually happened there.
As the New World of America was born, countries began vying to find a way to gain some land, and therefore, more power. In 1854, Queen
Elizabeth I began an expedition to form a new colony in America to gain an English hold on the land. The group of colonists would be the first
English–speaking colonists to live there. They landed on Roanoke Island, an island off of the coast of North Carolina. The group, which was led by Sir
Walter Raleigh, consisted of about one hundred men, but they struggled with forming good relationships with the Natives. Although two Native chiefs,

One of the more popular and logical theories is that local Natives kidnapped them and killed them over territory disputes. Some fought this with the
fact that there was not any struggle or signs of chaos on the island, or human remains. All of the buildings had been neatly torn down and there was
nothing left behind, except for a wooden fence lining the supposed perimeter. One theory states that the colonists moved farther inland; they
intermingled cultures with the Natives, but there is less than enough evidence to support this idea (theshadowlands.net). A popular theory states that
the colonists easily could have just got up and left in search of food, due to the extreme drought, and died from illness or hostile Natives (Destination
Commerce). Also, they could have attempted to sail back to England, but shipwrecked or were raided along the way, and that's why all of the houses

Essay On The Lost Colony Of Roanoke

  • 1. Essay On The Lost Colony Of Roanoke The lost colony of Roanoke is a controversial topic because no one is sure about what happened to the colony. The lost colony was a colony founded by Walter Raleigh established in 1585 on Roanoke Island which is now North Carolina. The colony disappeared without a trace sometime between 1587 and 1590. There are many theories about what happened to the colony but there is no conclusive answer. The lost colony of Roanoke is one of the biggest and oldest American mysteries because of the uncertainty surrounding the circumstances of its disappearance. On the 25th of March, 1584 a charter was issued to Walter Raleigh from Queen Elizabeth I. The charter issued stated that Raleigh was "to discover, search, finde out, and view such remote, heathen and barbarous lands, countries, and territories, not actually possessed of any Christian Prince, nor inhabited by Christian ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It drew the attention of David Phelps who was a professor from East Carolina university. He then conducted digs in the area and found a gold ring and gun lock, which he believed to be solid evidence that the settlers integrated with the natives (Hampton). The gold ring was examined and determined by researchers John Brooke–Little and Barbara Hird to have the crest of the Kendall family on it. There were two men that had the surname Kendall that were apart of the attempts at colonizing Roanoke. One, however, was picked up by Sir Francis Drake (Family Crest on Sixteenth–Century Gold Ring Tentatively Identified). Though this was never confirmed and the artifact was found with other artifacts dating around 1670–1720. However Phelps never tested the ring. And in April 2017, it was announced by Charles Ewen, who tested the ring, found that it was all brass and not gold. Ewen said it's probably a common item that was traded to the Natives after lost colony disappeared (Lawler). This was yet another dead end in the quest to mystery of the lost ... • 2. The Last Colony Of Roanoke The Last Colony of Roanoke Five hundred years ago, European explorers landed in North America. After trying to locate a new route to Asia across the Atlantic Ocean, they found a continent they did not know existed. Three different groups traveled to the New World, starting in 1584 (Basu, Tanya). The last group included Gov. John White, he had to return to England to submit his report to the Queen. John White tried several times to return to Virginia, but it wasn't until a few years later he was finally able to return to his new home. In 1584, when White was finally able to return, the land was barren and deserted of people. This baffling revelation began one of the greatest mysteries of all time. Three different groups traveled to the New ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Raleigh sent out two small troops lead by Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe to scout out a new inhabitable area (Horn, James). They arrived on the outer banks a few months later in August, 1585 (Carpenter, Jeannine). They were the first English explorers to set eyes on North Carolina (The Lost Colony). Within days after Lanes return to Roanoke Island from Weapemeoc, he wrote historian and geographer Richard Hakluyt that they had: "discovered the mainland to be the goodliest soil under the cope of heaven, so abounding with sweet trees, that bring such sundry rich and most pleasant gummes, grapes of such greatness, yet wild, as France, Spain nor Italy hath no greater" (Carpenter, Jeannine). One of the islands they persuade looked like a perfect island to settle. In another letter he sent to Sir Francis Walsingham, secretary to Queen Elizabeth, Lane seems to have enclosed a crude map, its legends revealing a "great store of fish" and "great red grapes very pleasant" there (Carpenter, Jeannine). This island was Roanoke, ten miles long and two and a half miles wide. These were all reasons why the Roanoke colonists would have been able to establish a long term residence there. They returned to England a year later with two Natives, Manteo and Wanchese (The Lost Colony). With them they brought back plentiful information about the new lands they discovered. Among the information ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Roanoke Colony The Roanoke island is located off the coast of present day North Carolina. There are many questions about where the people went and what happened to them. One of the main clues as to what happened was the word "CROATOAN" carved into the trunk of a tree. Some people think that the colonists travelled inland, tried to join an Indian tribe or they traveled to an island called Croatoan. The island was found by Sir Walter Raleigh who was sent by Queen Elizabeth. When the crew came back with the good news, they began gathering groups of people willing to settle in the new island called Roanoke. Researchers are always finding more details about where the colonists could have gone, what the word "croatoan" means and why the colonists left. In this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Then we would look at surrounding area or colonies. But, if we were in a person from the lost colony shoes and John White still had not returned then we would go join a native american tribe. We would join a tribe because without resources/ things we need to live then how are we going to survive. Also, the Native Americans would give us food, clothing, resources, hospitality and protection. By doing this, we would have a more likelihood of surviving until John White got back rather than dying because we would have had to wait for John White. If we were the people who were on charge of putting the word croatoan on a tree we would describe more than what they did. Say we were going to Croatoan Island then we would put on the tree Croatoan Island, if we joined a Native American tribe we would put Joined Native Tribe. So, we basically would carve on the tree where we went, so John White could find us/bring us the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some of the goals they had are represented in the following: exploring and potentially finding a new route to Asia, challenge the dominance of Imperial Spain by also establishing colonies in the America's, discover new commodities that will be useful in England, and improve personal profit. In 1998, an archaeologist at the College of William and Mary named Dennis Blanton published a paper in Science reporting the results of a tree ring analysis of some very, very old bald cypresses in Virginia. Blanton himself described his findings as "incredible:" The worst drought in 800 years took place in the three years after the colonists arrived at Roanoke. The absolute worst season occurred in 1587, right after White left for England. Archeologist and researchers have found many clues to theories but a certain answer to the mystery of Roanoke colony disappearance has not been yet found , but they are slowly coming close they have tested materials on the Roanoke area. Which include bowls, pottery, and articles of clothing. Scientist believe it will lead them to the answer weather it was a disease or just a mass killing. Another theory was they all committed a mass suicide due to being neglected by the English. They felt neglected because after many request for food and supplies England did not respond. It's also believed that they were unhappy with life in the colony of Roanoke after having to deal with lack of supplies, food, and constant attacks lead by the Native Americans. • 6. Lost Colony Of Roanoke Essay What Happened to the Colony of Roanoke America has one of the oldest unsolved mystery's dating back to 1587. To this day no one knows exactly what happened to the lost colony of Roanoke. (History.com 1) There are several theories as to what happened, but there is no definite proof. This is a display of the theories and history of Roanoke. In July of 1587, 116 settlers were sent to Roanoke under John White, who was the governor. This was the second colony attempted at Roanoke Island, off the coast of North Carolina. The first attempt was conducted by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1585. Raleigh soon abandoned this quest because they had not been prepared. They returned to England in 1586. The next year John White was put in charge of the second ... During this time John White was asked to leave for supplies from England, by the colonists. (Miller) Approximately 50 miles away there was another island named Hatteras. The Croatoan Indians lived on this Island. (History.com 1) Since then their name has changed and they are now known as the Lumbee Indians. (Waldman) History scholars say the Lumbee Indians were friendly and helped the colonists. Archeologists have found evidence in recent years that leads to where the colonists went. They have found artifacts from the time period of Roanoke that only the colonists could have left. The artifacts support the theory of the colonists splitting into two groups. This evidence is not solid, but it is a clue as to what might have happened. (Thiessen) John White had reluctantly left the colonists for supplies in England. He did not want to leave the colonists during this time of uncertainty. George Howe's death remained unclear. John White instructed the colonists if you move carve on a tree where you moved too. It is also referred to as "the lost colony" because the colonists disappeared during the Anglo – Spanish war three years after the last shipment of supplies from England. There is no conclusive evidence as to what happened to the colonists. The lost colony of Roanoke mystery The project was originally organized and funded by Sir Humphrey Gilbert, until he met an untimely death in 1583 during an aborted attempt to colonize St. John's, Newfoundland. It was then handed down, by the Queen, to Sir Humphrey's half–brother, Sir Walter Raleigh. On April 24, 1584, Raleigh sent off an expedition ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As retaliation, the settlers sacked and burned the village Despite this incident and a lack of food, Grenville decided to leave Ralph lane and 107 men to set up a colony at the north end of Roanoke Island, promising to return in April 1586 with more men and fresh supplies. The group left on August 17, 1585, and built a small fort on the island. There aren't pictures of the Roanoke fort, but it was probably similar in structure to the one in Guayanilla Bay. As April 1586 passed, there was no sign of Grenville's relief fleet. Meanwhile, in June, bad blood resulting from their destruction of the village caused an attack on the fort by the local Native Americans, which the colonists were able to repel. Soon after the attack, Sir Francis Drake, on his way home from a successful raid in the Caribbean, stopped at the colony and offered to take the colonists back to England. Many accepted, including metallurgist Joachim Gans. On this return voyage, the Roanoke colonists introduced tobacco, maize, and potatoes to Europe. The relief fleet arrived shortly after Drake's departure with the colonists. Finding the colony abandoned, Grenville returned to England with the majority of his force, leaving behind a small detachment both to maintain an English presence and to protect Raleigh's claim to Roanoke ... • 8. Roanoke Colony Research Paper Introduction It was generally assumed that Roanoke would become the first of many permanent English settlements in the New World; however, those assumptions would prove false after the colonists who travelled there disappeared under mysterious circumstances. For over 400 years, the mystery of the "Lost Colony" has endured in the Chesapeake region of America and has yet to be definitively solved. Beginning in the 1580s, a series of ventures and ill–fated colonization attempts laid the context and set the stage for the greatest vanishing act in American history. From supply shortages and unfavorable weather, to misunderstandings and violent interactions with the indigenous people – all three attempts to settle at Roanoke Island were thwarted in one fashion or another. The third colonization attempt would not prove to be a "charm" for England, as these 118 colonists disappeared with little evidence of what had happened to them. Background There were several factors that influenced Queen Elizabeth I of England to grant Sir William Raleigh a charter to colonize North America on March 25, 1584 (Mallios p.59). Tensions between the English and Spanish governments were strained at the time that this charter was granted. England and Spain hoped to achieve several, competing goals by colonizing the New World. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 9. Roanoke Colony Research Paper In the late 16th century, Queen Elizabeth I was looking to make a permanent settlement in North America. The Roanoke island, in present day North Carolina became the first European settlement in the New World. It was founded by English explorer Sir Walter Raleigh in August 1585. The settlement at Roanoke Island involved three Voyages. The First Voyage by SirWalter Raleigh was done to navigate and explore the area to find a proper location to settle. It was during this voyage the decision was made to settle at Roanoke Island. The initial plan was to settle at Chesapeake Bay but in order to find new natural resources Roanoke Island was selected. Later, on the second voyage Sir Richard Grenville was tasked with establishing a military colony. This colony was later abandoned and the people returned to England. The only clue that White found carved on a post was the word "Croatoan". All buildings has been dismantled as if no hurry on leaving the colony. White initially advised the settlers to carve a cross on a tree if they were leaving against their will or any threat of dangers but he found none. • 10. Analysis Of The Lost Colony Of Roanoke The colony of Roanoke is generally known as England's first attempt to begin a civilized and stable colony in the unexplored parts of earth known as the New World. Sadly, the plan to colonize Roanoke Island didn't go exactly as the British planned. The colonists had high hopes to find new things to take back to England to make profit off of and be the first to obtain life in the New World. Things started off well for the new colony, but the colonists began to have issues with the new people they had discovered on the island known as the Croatan and Secotan Indian's. After multiple attempts of trying to succeed at living a sustainable life in the New World the colony of Roanoke failed to exist when John White returned to the colony in 1590 and found not a single soul on the island. No one to this day is quite sure what happened to the remaining colonist's that were last seen on the island before John White left or any of the two Indian tribe's that had once lived there. The article I selected, "America's Lost Colony: Can New Dig Solve Mystery?" by Willie Drye from National Geographic News, discusses the story of the Lost Colony of Roanoke and the recent clues that have been found that could support several different theories of what happened to the colony. Drye starts by giving readers a little background information about how England hoped to find new things to bring back and trade as well as to create a stable colony in the New World back in the 1580s and 90s. • 11. Lost Colony Of Roanoke Essay The Lost Colony of Roanoke Queen Elizabeth I desired to establish a permanent English settlement in America, known then as "the New World." In the summer of 1587 a group of nearly 120 men and women from England arrived on Roanoke Island, one of a chain of barrier islands now known as the Outer Banks, off the coast of what is now known as North Carolina. This group of settlers set sail from England with the mission of making the Queen's wishes a reality. John White was appointed Governor of the colony by Sir Walter Raleigh. Sometime later, Governor White set sail for England to gather supplies for the colony. "Before he had left for England, White and the colonists had discussed leaving the settlement and founding the city of Raleigh on the mainland, so the fact that the colonists were no longer in the settlement would not have been surprising to White. The colonists also worked out signals to communicate with those who were coming to their assistance. For example, if they left due to an attack, they were supposed to carve a Maltese cross over their doorposts to signal that they were in distress. Alternatively, if they left to try to find a more suitable place, they were supposed to carve the names of the areas they would be traveling through so that White would be able to find them upon his ... • 12. Disappearance Of The Roanoke Colony The Roanoke Colony was a colony that seemed to disappear in 1950. There are many theories about what happened to the colony, but the theory that they colonized into other settlements around them is the most probable. The disappearance of the colony is why it earned the name "the lost colony" In 1584 on March 25th, Queen Elizabeth told Sir Walter Raleigh to start a colony in North america. Raleigh started his expedition with Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe to start and explore the eastern coast of North America on April 27, 1584. They ended up arriving on July 4th and created relations with the locals, the Secotans and Croatans. They then returned to England, however, Raleigh was not done. He organized a second expedition that was led by Sir Richard Grenville. Grenville departed on April 9, 1585 with 5 main ships. They were all to meet up in Puerto Rico. Then in 1587 Raleigh had 100 or so colonists to start the Roanoke colony but eventually the ran out of supplies. Reluctant to give up, he turned to private investors to finance another expedition. In 1585 his cousin, Sir Richard Grenville, was picked up to be the leader of a group to establish a colony on Roanoke. With him were 100 soldiers, craftsmen, and scholars to try and settle the colony. Under direction of Ralph Lane, the colony was doomed from the beginning. The settlers had arrived late in the season which made it almost impossible to plant crops and supplies were depleting and to make things worse, Lane, a captain alienated the surrounding tribes and killed their chief over a stolen cup. After Ralph Lane and his men had had enough, they left the settlement and their fort not knowing that only a week later a supply ship from England had arrived. Finding the island deserted, the leader left fifteen men behind to hold the fort and went back to England for reinforcements. In England, on January 7, 1587, a document allowing a government body to be created was signed and passed. This body was named the Governor and Assistants of the City of Roanoke in Virginia. Jon White, a skilled illustrator and map maker, was appointed Governor. • 15. Causes Of The Lost Colony Of Roanoke "The lost colony of Roanoke is one of the most–notorious mysteries in American history; the cryptic clues left at the abandoned settlement and the lack of any concrete evidence make it the focus of wild speculation and theories". Within three years what would have been the first permanent English colony that was formed in the New World disappeared in 1590, only leaving two small clues behind. The colony mayor John White returned to the island to discover the word "Croatoan" had been carved into the palisade surrounding the settlement as well as "Cro" carved into a nearby tree. It appeared as if the colonists had disassembled all buildings, packed up, and left without a trace. Throughout extensive research and sweeping the island there have been no remains or signs of Indian attacks found leaving one mysterious question unanswered: what was the cause of the disappearance of the Roanoke colony and where did they go? Roanoke was the first English settlement in the New World, founded in August of 1585 by the English explorer Sir Walter Raleigh. The first colony suffered the usual lack of food supplies and Indian attacks, forcing them to return to England in 1586 on a ship that was captained by Sir Francis Drake. However, the following year Raleigh had made the decision to send another hundred colonists under the oversight of John White. The same situation that forced the original Roanoke colonists to return home began to trouble the new colony. Later that year the colonists ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. The First English Colony: Roanoke Colony Sir Walter Raleigh attempted to established the first English colony in the New World in 1585. This colony was called Roanoke, but it is modern day North Carolina. His goal for this colony was for the English, Indians, and African Americans to all live together. His first attempt at colonizing this region failed due to scarce food and constant Indian advances, causing the settlers to return to England in 1586. Raleigh later sent out Sir John White to help try to colonize the region along with 100 other colonists. This was the first attempt to try to successfully settle at the new colony. The colonists also could have known to move away when they realized the effect the new diseases began to have on their community. Although this theory is logical, there is little to no evidence to prove it could be true. Theses settlers were around more diseases where they originally lived than in the New World, so it would have been more likely for the Native Americans to contract the diseases instead of the English. The English settlers most likely contributed to the multitude of diseases brought to this area, meaning a disease they brought would not have wiped them out, instead wiping out the Native Americans. Also, there were no remains found to prove the settlers were deceased on the land of Roanoke. When he landed in England, he found that his country was getting ready for war with Spain. For the next two years, no ships or sailors were available for a return trip to Roanoke. It wasn't until August 1590, after the English defeated Spain, that White finally found ships to take him back to the colony (Horn, 2010). White and his men dropped anchor off the Outer Banks of North Carolina and rowed toward the island. Crewman sounded familiar tunes on trumpets to alert the colonists, but not a single human figure was seen. The landing party made its way through the woods to the settlement at the island's northern end. Bracing himself for the worst, White entered the clearing where he had parted from the colonists, including his daughter, Eleanor Dare and his granddaughter, the first child born in the colonies, Virginia Dare (Davis, 2009). He found the settlement deserted, weeds and vines sprouting where houses had once stood. The houses themselves had been carefully dismantled and removed. Gone, too, were the fort's small cannon; buried chests were found, containing some of the colonists' possessions. All the evidence suggested a planned and orderly withdrawal (McGill, 2009). One of the most prominent enigmas that has haunted historians for centuries is the disappearance of the Roanoke Island Colony, also known to many as The Lost Colony. After leaving for three years, the governor of Roanoke Island, John White, returned to find the settlement abandon. The only remaining clue was the word "CROATOAN" carved into a fence post and the letters "CRO" etched into a nearby tree. Several diverse theories have been suggested to explain the disappearance of the 120 missing colonist, ranging from disease to natural disaster. Any evidence supporting the various theories is weak, at best. However, the clues left behind point to the assimilation theory which proposes the colonists integrated with the natives, as the Croatoan had been a friendly Native American tribe in the area. Furthermore, the majority of new facts and the strongest evidence support the assimilation theory as well. Other common theories have numerous flaws in their logic that make them highly improbable. It is because the only sign the colony left behind indicates assimilation, any new or outside evidence discovered also serves to further prove assimilation, and all other theories suffer major inaccuracies that assimilation is the most probable theory. John White, the governor of this new colony, traveled back to England to gather resources. The Anglo–Spanish war delayed White's return to Roanoke Island until 1590. Upon his arrival to the Island, White had discovered that everything had disappeared except for the bones of one unidentified man and the word "CROATOAN" carved into a tree. This colony is now known as the Lost Colony of Roanoke and there have been many theories as to what happened to the colonists. One likely theory is that the colonists faced problems such as famine, disease and hostile tribes, which led their relocation with the Croatan Indians. One factor that caused the colonists to relocate was famine. John White left for England so he could bring resources back to the colonists on Roanoke Island. Because the war had delayed his return the colonists were forced to live with solely what was on the island for three years. This left the colonists ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The New World was, of course, new to the colonists. It was unfamiliar territory, and with this came unfamiliar disease. The colonists were not immune to these new diseases so I was easy for them [the disease] to wipe out the colonists who may have contracted it. Europeans were exposed to "a few tropical diseases from Africa and, probably, syphilis from the New World." (Walbert, Learn NC). Because there were no bones or graves found in the New World, this leads to belief that the colonists were able to relocate before disease had wiped out the majority of the colonists. This was a strategy widely known to the explorers that came before them, "the previous group from 1585 had been ordered to do so [relocate] if disaster struck." (Basu, 2013). • 34. The Roanoke Colony On Roanoke Island The Roanoke Colony on Roanoke Island was an attempt by Queen Elizabeth I in the late 16th–century to make a permanent English settlement in the New World. In March 1584, Queen Elizabeth granted Sir Walter Raleigh a charter for the colonization of the area of North America. This charter said that Raleigh needed to create a colony in North America, or lose his right to colonization. In April 1584, Raleigh dispatched an expedition led by Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe to explore the Eastern coast of North America. They arrived onRoanoke Island on July 4 and soon established relations with the natives, the Secotans and Croatoans. Barlowe returned to England with two Croatans named Manteo and Wanchese, who were able to describe the politics ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1587, Raleigh sent a new group of 115 colonists to establish a colony on Chesapeake Bay. John White, a friend of Raleigh who had accompanied the previous expeditions to Roanoke, led them. White was later elected Governor and Raleigh named 12 assistants to aid in Roanoke 's settlement. They were ordered to travel to Roanoke first to gather Grenville 's men, but when they arrived in July 1587, they found nothing except a skeleton that may have been the remains of one of the English garrison. They were counting on these men to help with the new colony, but when they could find no one, they gave up hope of ever seeing Grenville 's men alive. The fleet 's commander, Simon Fernandez, insisted that they establish the new colony on Roanoke. White re–established relations with the Croatans and tried to establish friendly relations with the tribes Ralph Lane had battled the previous year. The hostile tribes refused to meet with him. Shortly thereafter, colonist George Howe was killed by an Indian while searching alone for crabs in Albemarle Sound. Fearing for their lives, the colonists persuaded Governor White to return to England to explain the colony 's desperate situation and ask for help. Left behind were about 115 colonists – the remaining men and women who had made the Atlantic crossing plus White 's newly born granddaughter Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the Americas. White sailed for England in late 1587. Crossing the Atlantic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Essay Lost Colony of Roanoke For centuries, the Lost Colony of Roanoke Island has been a controversial issue. Many theories exist that explain the disappearance of the colony. Some theories suggest that the colonists left the island to live with friendly neighboring Indians. Others suggest that a hurricane wiped out the colony or that a savage Indian tribe massacred them. The possibility of disease destroying them is also a debated topic. However, evidence indicates that the men and women left behind on Roanoke Island did not die because of massacre, disease, or starvation but went to live with the Croatoan Indians. In 1587 a group of men, women, and children led by Sir John White set sail for America and landed on a North Carolina island called Roanoke (Shirley ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, physical proof indicates that after John White left the colony to return to England, the colonists intermarried with the Indians. According to David Beers Quinn, author of Set Fair for Roanoke, the colonists and the Indians did intermarry (350). The colonists intermarrying with the Indians would cause some of the offspring to have genetic traits unusual for Indians, such as blue eyes or light colored hair. In his article about the lost colony, Scott Dawson writes that an explorer named John Lawson discovered blue eyed Indians dressed in English apparel; Dawson also says that the Indians claimed to have "White" descendants (6). Therefore, by making Manteo lord of Roanoke and intermarrying with the Indians, the colonists proved their strong relationship with the Croatoans. Upon his return, John White met with no indications of the deaths of the colonists. Linda Kramer states that John White and the colonists agreed that in the event of leaving Roanoke, the colonists in a noticeable location would engrave the name of the place to which they were departing and that an engraving of a Maltese cross above the name of the location would signal leaving because of danger (3). When White returned to the colony after three years of being absent, he discovered one of the signals the colonists promised to engrave if they left. It was August 18, 1590, the day of Virginia Dare's third birthday, when John White disembarked to find the colony completely and entirely bare. There were no colonists anywhere to be found as well as no signs of struggle or battling. The only clue as to their whereabouts was a crudely scraped word, "CROATOAN" and on a nearby tree, "CRO". • 39. Lost Colony Of Roanoke Essay America's first greatest mystery has yet to be disclosed and only pieces of the events surrounding the enigma are known. The Lost Colony of Roanoke has remained a worldwide mystery for almost four centuries and there have been many attempts at discovering what actually happened there. As the New World of America was born, countries began vying to find a way to gain some land, and therefore, more power. In 1854, Queen Elizabeth I began an expedition to form a new colony in America to gain an English hold on the land. The group of colonists would be the first English–speaking colonists to live there. They landed on Roanoke Island, an island off of the coast of North Carolina. The group, which was led by Sir Walter Raleigh, consisted of about one hundred men, but they struggled with forming good relationships with the Natives. Although two Native chiefs, Manteo and Wanchese, were brought to England to help establish strong relations, the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the more popular and logical theories is that local Natives kidnapped them and killed them over territory disputes. Some fought this with the fact that there was not any struggle or signs of chaos on the island, or human remains. All of the buildings had been neatly torn down and there was nothing left behind, except for a wooden fence lining the supposed perimeter. One theory states that the colonists moved farther inland; they intermingled cultures with the Natives, but there is less than enough evidence to support this idea (theshadowlands.net). A popular theory states that the colonists easily could have just got up and left in search of food, due to the extreme drought, and died from illness or hostile Natives (Destination Commerce). Also, they could have attempted to sail back to England, but shipwrecked or were raided along the way, and that's why all of the houses and possessions were gone ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
