Introduction
Climate change has been a major global issue for the past years and the use of non–renewable
energy sources is only adding to the pollution that is responsible for the destruction of our planet.
One of the biggest indicators of unproductivity is the lack of utilization of renewable energy
sources. Currently, only a small percentage of Florida's energy is attained by renewable sources
(U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2017). The state of Florida is capable of at least partly
running on solar or hydro power, but most schools don't take advantage of the resources that are
naturally occurring. Specifically, the School District of Palm Beach County operates a total of 112
schools, as reported by the school district website. Of them, ten have achieved LEED certification, a
rating system that certifies "green schools," meaning that they are energy efficient and use
sustainable resources. This leaves the other 102 schools to continue to use up non–renewable
resources and contribute to the mass pollution of the Earth. According to XCel Energy, schools
spend billions of dollars yearly, just to deal with the daily expenses. However, a significant portion
of a school budget is used for utilities such as air conditioning, water, and electricity. Both
individual schools and the school district could save money by taking advantage of the natural

energy can help economic growth and reduce the cost to maintain our standard of living.
Based on my research, I have noted some significant long term positive impacts of renewable
energy that should be taken under consideration. In this paper you will find information related to
supply and demand for energy, U.S. dependence on foreign energy and why we should rely on
renewable energy more so that we can relieve our dependence from foreign sources.

Reducing the Carbon Footprint
The 7th principle of green chemistry states "A raw material or feedstock should be renewable rather
than depleting whenever technically and economically viable."1 This means making use of easily
available, cheap, and non–exhaustive resources like biomass consisting of plant or animal feedstock
and/or carbon dioxide to make platform chemicals and commercially viable products instead of our
conventional non–renewable resources like fossil fuels, natural gas, and oil. The rising fuel and
energy demands of an ever growing world population in the last two decades have resulted in rapid
depletion of these non–renewable resources. These circumstances have forced us to look at other
possible sources to sustain the chemical, fuel and energy requirements of a growing and developing
planet. Renewable feedstocks can be the answer to this. However the major challenge/test in this is
to develop platform chemicals and materials with pathways employing low energy consumption
processes and which would be less toxic. Another important factor is to have a process in which the
amount of carbon that is incorporated into the system is higher than the amount that goes out to the
environment. This difference is referred to as the carbon footprint and if positive can help reduce
global warming.1 So if these processes used in making new platform chemicals and materials along
with the final chemicals themselves, can contribute to a positive carbon foot print along with less
toxic and harmful effects

`` One Good Question `` By Ray Anderson
Introduction
In the chapter "One good question" in Confessions of a Radical Industrialist, author Ray Anderson
(2010) alerts that even though industries (including his) were very successful in different aspects,
their actions were dangerous and were mistaken.
1) The Beginning of Interface
According to Anderson, Interface, a modern and innovative industry producing carpets tiles for
different needs, was founded in 1973 (p. 8). Interface was a fast, profitable and growing business
thanks to the concept of Carpet Tiles, which Anderson brought from his trip to England. In addition,
Anderson claims he was considered as a Hero with a very successful business, even though he
wasn't bothered by the fact of the drastic amount of energy his company was consuming (well
enough to power a city) (p. 8). Interface manufactured carpet tiles using a lot of oil–derived products
(Anderson, p.8). Anderson states that although all the pollution and waste Interface was generating,
the company meant progress for everyone, money, and it was totally legal in every aspect (p. 9).
2) The question
Anderson points out that he was never concerned about his company's affect on the environment
until he received the question (p. 9). In fact, the question asked what the company was doing in
favour of the environment. Due to this, Anderson states that customers are in first place before
everything else for Interface. Consequently, Anderson highlights the importance of any claims or

The dictionary meaning of sustainability is "the ability to be maintained at a certain rate or level". In
real terms this means we need to treat and respect the environment and keep it at a level that the is
still reasonable to the human eye. This is so that future generations will be able to enjoy the

A renewable resource is a resource which can be used repeatedly and replaced naturally. Solar
power is the technology of obtaining usable energy from the light of the sun. Solar energy is a
renewable source which has come into use where other power supplies are absent.
A non–renewable resource is a resource of economic value that cannot be readily replaced by
natural means. Most fossil fuels, such as oil, natural gas and coal are all considered to be non–
renewable resources.

One of the most important innovations ever made by humankind was a discovery of the ability to
transform the energy into the electricity. In today's modern world it is hard to imagine that there was
a world without the electricity and that electricity was gifted to the humanity just 400 years ago. As

Electricity is the gift granted to humans and it is our generation's duty to use the electricity energy

Natural Gas
Natural gas is a non–renewable resource, meaning that it will not last forever. If the production of
natural gas continues at the same rate, it will only last for approximately another 91 years. Natural
gas is a power source used to power particular things in homes, for example heaters, hot water and
stoves. The way this particular power source is produced/sourced is that at the bottom of the ocean,
deceased animals and plants etc. otherwise called organic matter are found and can be broken down
into the formation of natural gas through a series of wells and pipes, and delivered to homes and
businesses and other places where natural gas is used through the pipes. Scientists are trying to find
other resources for gas because they are aware that the current one won't last and that they are

is called Hydraulic Fracturing, otherwise known as 'fracking'. Part of the fracking procedure is that a
high water pressure is sent through tubes and pipes under water being forced onto different rocks.
This water, however, contains several harmful chemicals that damage the organisms and animals

Global Warming and climate change have effected pop culture since the late twentieth century.
Human pollution and consumption began in the eighteenth century due to the industrial revolution
(Richard Smith). There is a huge difference in what scientists have studied and what is out in pop
culture. "Eyes Wide Open," by Gotye is a wakeup call to the world about human pollution and
consumption, and how humanity knowingly is causing global warming without the blink of an eye.
Since the late nineteenth century, the world has become aware of global warming but instead of
changing the ways of living to help the planet, humanity began the digital revolution. In a world of
disbelief, Gotye's song and video, "Eyes Wide Open," forces the viewer to visualize the reality of

The video for "Eyes Wide Open" begins with a visual of tall spider like creatures walking while the

The U.S. is using non–renewable resources affecting the environment and the resource itself
negatively. This is a problem because the fossil fuels are creating a tremendous amount of Carbon

people of this world. The resources people use are called natural resources. All of these different
resources have different uses and are used in different places in the world, but all of them are used to
power inventions humans have made. Therefore, important resources are separated into two
different categories: nonrenewable resources– resources humans use faster than they can be
replenished and renewable resources– resources that seem almost inexhaustible. While all of these
resources have their pros, they also have their flaws. Coal is good example of a nonrenewable
resource as well as a fossil fuel, a subcategory of nonrenewable resources. There are two types of
nonrenewable resources found: fossil fuels, like coal, natural gas, and oil, and nuclear energy. Since
coal is a fossil fuel, it is literally made out of fossils. Coal was only produced once, because there
had to be a point in time when the decayed plants would be able to retain their energy from

process called nuclear fission which involves the splitting of Uranium–235 or 238 creating steam

carried out properly, but when this process is performed properly it will produce massive amounts of
energy that can power entire cities or destroy them like in the cases of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
