1. TWO WRITTEN REFERENCES Read books, websites,
articles, on the country, people or culture. These must be
academic sources. I accept Wikipedia as ONE source. Do not
just do a Google search for Anthropology terms & use that
search site as a source. That would not be an academic source.
Here is a list of resources put together by the KVCC librarians
KVCC Library source list
***At least 2 written academic references must be cited in your
bibliography***
2. VISUAL RESOURCE Watch a dvd, film, webcast about this
country. Documentaries, travel films, etc. show dress, manners,

fine.

current events. Read a current news article about this country.
Include:
a. a copy of the article with b. answers to all 4 the questions in
the Part V Appendix.
***In the bib include a citation for the articleâs source***
5. MAPS Find a world map & a regional map. Indicate your
ancestor's country on each. Include both clearly labelled maps
in the Part V Appendix.
*** In the bib include a citation for your maps***
Investigate you country/Culture using ALL five sources. You
may use more, but these 5 are required. Sources from 1 & 2 are
good for Part I. 1 is best for Part II & lll-the Anthropology
analysis. 2 & 3 are good for Part lV. 4 & 5 apply to the
appendix in Part V.
GUIDELINES #5 PART III: SECONDARY INSTITUTIONS OF

GUIDELINES FOR FORMATTING & HOW TO APPROACH
THIS PAPER
FORMAT:
Format in any way you desire. If you wish to number your
answers, fine, but donât include the questions. That format was
preferred for past students. Iâve also had a handwritten journal,
as if from an immigrant from Finland, that followed the
instructions & answered all the questions! I had a mailbag of
letters I had to open & read in order, also fulfilling all the
instructions. I had a travel log, illustrated & annotated
âEthnography Magazineâ article & fictional story that followed
all instructions to greater & lesser degrees⌠YOU decide the
format, but numbered answers work great, if thatâs what you
prefer. Youâre after earning as many of the 100 points as you
can, so simplest might be best.
BUT- DO NOT JUST USE A BULLET POINT LIST OF
TERMS. You will NOT get 100 points for that.
34. PAPER REQUIREMENTS:
Use complete sentences & write at a college level. If you make
writing errors, especially if I suggested it on Paper 1, the
Writing Center can help you catch any common, fixable writing
mistakes.
Please DOUBLE SPACE so thereâs room for instructor notes.
The paper needs to be at least 6-7 PAGES in font 12 or less. Do
NOT use large headings/footings, wide margins & big spaces
between paragraphs, sections, etc.
Grammar and writing:
Evidence of plagiarism means paper will not be graded. A direct
quote from anysource, especially class generated material,
MUST have âquotation marksâ, (parenthetical citation) & the
source in the bibliography. If you plagiarize, you lose 100
points. If youâre unsure what plagiarism is or how to cite direct
quotes, CALL.
If I marked writing mistakes on paper #1, go to the Writing
Center. Have them contact me that you used them. If this is
done, no writing/grammar points will be subtracted from your
paper.
Otherwise, I will manuallysubtract points from your final score
as listed below.
1-10 writing, spelling or grammar mistakesNO points will be
subtracted
11-25 mistakes
-1 points
35. 26-40 mistakes
-2 points
More than 41 writing/spelling/grammar mistakes
-3 points
Number of writing mistakes & point penaltywill be included in
your gradeâs submitted comments
Use the GUIDELINES loaded on the Paper 2 instructions.
Follow the hints in the indented comments.
This paper is worth 100 points. Do the easy points first.
Part I is 15 points. Thereâs NO Anthropology. It will set you up
for the rest of the paper. Do that first.
Part IV is 22 easy points! It has little Anthropology in it. Do
that second. Youâre at 37 points.
Do the Appendix next, or 1. & 2. of Part V. Theyâre easy & fast.
Build the Bib as you go. Thatâs 13
more points. Youâre now at 50 points without doing much
Anthropology yet.
Now do Anthropology, but do the parts you understand best or
the easiest parts first. Part II is 24 points, so a quarter of the
paper. Subsistence Strategies should be easy to figure out if you
follow the hints in the Guidelines. Call if you need help. Name
every single Subsistence Strategy thatâs used for survival, even
if it seems small. Name it! Define each one IN YOUR OWN
WORDS. Give 2 examples from each. That should be 5-10
points if you follow the guideline hints. Technology is not hard.
Look at pictures. Look at the tools. Follow the Guideline hints.
That could be 4-8 Division of Labor seems to pose the biggest
36. problems in the past. Do the best you can! That might be
another 3-6 points. If you
even get half points on Part II youâll be at 62 points. If you do
better, youâll have more.
Part III is 26 & the hardest, from what students said in the past.
Again, go for easiest first. Social Organization is 8 points &
pretty easy. Do it first! Religion may be the next easiest. Do it
second. Even do the easiest parts of the hard sections first.
Economic Sectors are not hard. Neither are external Political
Controls on the Individual. Each is 2 points. Do those. Then try
your best at the harder questions. Again, if you get just half
right, youâre at 75 points! If you do better, you get more
points.
If you add the 5 points extra credit from a zoom study group,
getting half the Anthropology parts right
still gets you 80 points. But I get it, you wanna do better. CALL
if you hit a tangle.
This is what Iâve noticed in the past: Students wait too long to
start working on this. Iâve had students call the night before the
paperâs due to ask for help finding their ethnicity. You wonât
get a good grade if you donât start early enough. Iâve gotten
papers turned in at the last minute that stop in the middle of a
sentence. I have a super intro & everything else bullet points. I
get papers without maps. Itâs only 2 points, but theyâre easy
points! I get bullet points in Part IV which is 22 fairly easy
points. Do those now! BONUS: a weekly assignment is on
PART IV. If youâve already done it, then youâve also already
done that weekly assignment!
