John F Kennedy Dbq
John F. Kennedy was the first president to dance with a black woman at his inaugural ball
(abc.com). In the 1960s segregation in the south was a progressing problem, schools and workplaces
were still segregated even though there were laws. Civil rights activists wanted stand, but they
simply didn't have enough power. JFK took a stand by setting the groundwork for a bill and
integrating schools in the south. Before JFK was elected in 1960, segregation was a huge problem.
In most southern states; To vote you would have to pass a literacy test (JFKlibray.org staff).
Southern states did this intentionally because they knew seven out of ten blacks were illiterate
(nces.ed.gov). Even though preventing blacks from voting was declared unconstitutional, ... Show

JFK saw that public displays of terror against minorities embarrassed the united states. Kennedy
didn't want the United States to be looked down upon, so he decided to propose a bill to legislate.
Whilst writing his proposal Kennedy realised that he would lose the support and respect of white
southern senators which outnumber the support of northern senators. This caused the legislative
process to be in its early stages when he was assassinated so he never got to finish the process out
(crf–usa.org), meaning that JFK did a major part in setting the groundwork for the civil rights bill.
Although Kennedy never signed the legislation he set the groundwork for the civil rights movement.
He proposed the idea and did most of the foot work, even kennedy's death helped pass the bill. After
Lyndon took office, he was determined to carry out kennedy's ideas. It only took a couple of months
after Kennedy died for the bill to be passed (http://loc.gov/). Johnson used the nation's sympathy to
propel the campaign forward. The campaign was doing so well after his death that it went further
than Kennedy had ever imagined, the bill would go on to set up the NAACP and ended the poll

CONCERT REPORT #2
Beatles Z320
For my second concert report I thought that I would write about my only experience hearing songs
of the Beatles live. The Rib America Festival was hosted by The Beatles Live Repertoire. The group
dressed exactly like the Beatles, even had the same names, John, Paul, George, and Ringo. I had
never heard any Beatles songs live before, so that was enough to get me off my butt. Not to
mention, it was free entertainment, not a bad time at all.
So the show starts, and I'm not sure what to expect. Paul comes out and introduces the band, ( very
good English accent ) and then started out with "I want to hold your hand ". He mentioned that their

Especially the age difference. There were old people, middle aged, teenagers and even little kids.
There was this one woman that stuck out like a sore thumb. She was just going crazy with the
dancing, and was just singing out every lyric to every song. But what was more impressing,
(especially since her dancing wasn't) here kids that couldn't have been any older than 9 or 10, were
also singing every lyric. They were singing songs that I had never even heard.
Anyway, "Can't buy me love", "Help", and " Yesterday" were the next songs played. "Can't buy me
love", "Help", were mediocre, but "Yesterday" was impressive. I have always liked that song, and it
was good to hear it live. Not to mention, the band players were very good with their instruments. "A
ticket to Ride", and "She loves You", were to follow. The festival was being sponsored by 104.5 fm,
and the DJ from 104.5 named Bruce something or other, stepped in and played drums on "She loves
You". He said that he had always wanted to play with the Beatles, and what an honor it was to be
able to do this. And I'm not doubting his enthusiasm, but, I think that the whole thing was rigged.
The next song was the last song before the band took their one and only break of the night. Very
impressive, that this band is putting on a show like they were getting $20/ ticket. They played for
about an hour and a quarter before taking the break.

Falling Into Place Analysis
History ingrains itself in the modern world. From the first to last breath people take, they create the
history of themselves, along with the history of their ancestors and culture. Gordon Sheppard's
biography, HA! A Self–Murder Mystery, about the infamous Quebec author, Hubert Aquin, and
Amy Zhang's novel, Falling Into Place, about a fictional Liz Emerson, contain the theme of
exploring seemingly–inconsequential past events to demonstrate how quickly a person's past spirals
out of their control. The two narrators, Gordon Sheppard and Liz's imaginary friend, reflect on
various relationships and memories their respective characters experience to gain a deeper
understanding of the emotional state the protagonists are in at the time of their suicides. ... Show

In Amy Zhang's, Falling Into Place, Liz Emerson looks up to her father when she is a young girl,
and losing him is catastrophic:
On the first day of preschool, Liz dug her fingers into the leg of her father's jeans and held on tight
as the overly sunny teacher tried to drag her into the overly sunny classroom. Her dad leaned down
and told her to make a wish. Tearfully, Liz asked her daddy to stay with her. He promised to never
leave. On the first day of school after her father's funeral, Monica [Liz's mother] dropped Liz off for
the first time. Monica didn't try to hug her, and Liz didn't ask her to stay. (Zhang 73)
As a preschool child, Liz's best friend is her father. He takes her out on little expeditions when they
have days off, and allows her to be herself when her mother is out on business trips. She loves him,
but he dies just as she begins aging into the state where she craves independence. His death forces
her into a deeper isolation and with an absent mother, she feels more alone than ever. This
contributes to her decision to crash her car and she specifically chooses the same day that her father
died on. Liz wants her mother to only suffer through one day of pain a year, believing that her
mother does not care for her as much as she truly

Likewise, Dr. King stood in a place of great significance. Here, in front of the statue of President
Lincoln, is where he will present his infamous "I Have a Dream" speech and it is evident of the
great significance it represents. It was in 1863 that President Lincoln fought to abolish slavery and
by coincidence, one hundred years later, Dr. King will be addressing more than 200,000
demonstrators fighting the same fight. On this day Dr. King will articulately responds to Governor
Wallace's speech that had taken place seven months prior. As the prominent Dr. King put it, "Now is
the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children" (archives.gov). In other words, Dr. King
is stating, that equality and fair justice should not be based on, ethnicity, color, or status, but in
essence we are all created equal and ought to live harmoniously. Throughout these two speeches, Dr.
King and Governor Wallace, both use strong evidence to strengthen their credibility and appeal to
Ethos. Comparatively, both men are well educated, from the South and are well respected within
their community. Governor Wallace was born a farmer's son in the year 1919. Though he received a
law degree from the University of Alabama, he joined the military and was involved in a combat
mission over Japan. Upon returning, he became an Assistant States Attorney, and later a judge of the

1. Comparison of Instrumentation In song #1, You've Got To Hide Your Love Away, features both
John Lennon and Paul McCartney on the acoustic rhythm guitar, George Harrison on the acoustic
lead guitar, Ringo Starr circulates between the tambourine, shaker, and maracas. Johnnie Scott plays
the tenor and alto flutes (MacDonald, 148). In song #2, I'm Down, has a little different setup on
instrumentation with McCartney on the electric bass, Lennon on the electric guitar, organ, Harrison
on lead Electric Guitar, and Starr on the drums, bongos. (MacDonald, 148). The resemblance for
song #1 and #2 is that both use guitars but take note that McCartney switches from acoustic guitar to

"Chuck Berry was perhaps the most fundamental progenitor of the Beatles' sound,"
(www.liverpoolcityportal.co.uk/beatle/beatles_influences[–>0], April 13th, 2013). The solo's of
electric guitar can be heard in both Berry's Johnny B Goode and I'm Down. Between both Beatles
songs the differences seem to override the similarities. They both have a completely different feel.
One screaming rock n roll and the other acoustic folk. The influences of each song clearly point this
out. Bob Dylan an acoustic player and Little Richard a Rock N Roll player are two completely
different sounding musicians.
3. Discussion of the Lyrics
The lyrics of song #1 have a poetic feel to them. You've got to hide your love away, can be
categorized as (2) sexuality or (8) abstract or poetic image making. The sexuality can be seen within
the lyrics and even in the title of the song. Homosexuality is what the song is about when reading
the lyrics carefully. Almost like a picture story you can imagine a gay individual who has to had his
love and everywhere people stare at hime making the person feel two–foot small. After
understanding the deep meaning of the song it becomes more personal and beautiful. That is where
an abstract and poetic image is made.
The lyrics of song #2, I'm down, can be categorized as (3) alienation. The lyrics are very repetitive,
repeating I'm down over and over again. The lyrics make someone feel estranged or outcasted. How

Handicap Each to His Ability
Kurt Vonnegut paints a picture of American society 120 years past 1961. Society has made a gradual
change, but it is a drastic one nonetheless. After nearly two hundred amendments to the constitution,
everyone is supposed to be equal in every way. "Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody
was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else." (232
Vonnegut). In this landscape Vonnegut shows that people will never be completely equal, and trying
to force equality through controlling individuals will only create a new class system. In the sixties,
as today, equality was a frequent topic of debate. The Civil Rights movement was rapidly gaining
support, as was equal pay for women, protections of voting ... Show more content on

The cunning part is how the mask naturally will cause unhandicapped people to either fear her or be
repulsed by her. In effect, dehumanizing the one being oppressed. Additionally, they show a ruthless
efficiency in enforcing the handicap laws. When Glampers kills Harrison and his ballerina, it is done
with cameras rolling. The television remains on until after the musicians resume wearing their
handicaps. Her message could not be more clear; the penalty for open defiance is death. Hazel and
the announcer represent the two classes who believe themselves to be benefiting from this quasi–
utopian society. The announcer shows no apparent awareness of the burden forced equality has put
on others. Hazel, however, briefly does when she sees Harrison killed. "Hazel's feelings ought to be
a continued, placid satisfaction that all is well. But deep within her the sympathetic individual
cannot be stifled" (Mowery). Fortunately, for the H–G men she is of average intelligence and
quickly forgets. The average intelligence class is aware, George shows this when he thinks to
himself, "[the ballerinas] weren't very good–no better than anybody else would have been..."
(Vonnegut 232). He knows society has stagnated, but he lacks the will to do anything about it. he
has accept his handicaps, they are just a part of him. Harrison is the opposite, maybe his youth is the
reason, but he cannot withstand the torture of being limited and vilified. He has a natural hunger to

which soon after he joined the US Army Air Corp. and was involved in a combat mission over

much to his dismay, he lost to his opponent who was a segregationist. Be that as it may, four years
later his decision was to run again, but this time he was endorsed by the Ku Klux Klan, who helped
him obtain the Governorship.
Martin Luther King Jr., was from a middle–class family with strong Baptist beliefs. Surprisingly, at
the young age of 15, he attended Morehouse College and later enter Boston University. Dr. King
obtained his pastoral and doctorate degrees, and appeared that he followed in the footsteps of his
grandfather and father to become a Baptist Pastor. While living in Montgomery, Alabama, a small
group of civil rights activists launched a boycott against the public bus system. Unbeknownst to Dr.
King, the activist would choose him as the representative for their cause. This would launch the
beginning of Dr. King's ongoing struggle to end segregation.

American History: The Vietnam War
"Nixon Wins By Thin Margin" read the front page of the New York Times on Thursday November
7th, 1968, two days after Election Day. Richard Nixon won about 4 times the margin he lost to John
F. Kennedy in 1960. The craziness that occurred during the election went hand in hand with the
chaos of 1968. In this election, there were three candidates: Richard Nixon of the Republican Party,
Hubert Humphrey of the Democratic Party, and George Wallace of the American Independent Party.
The candidates did not know it at the time, but they would become part of the Presidential Election
that would help shape American Politics to what they are today. The election of Richard Nixon in

Wallace knew he did not have good odds of wining the election. His goal, instead, was to win
enough electoral votes to prevent either of the other candidates from reaching the 270–vote
minimum. This would force either a vote in the House of Representatives or a bargaining process
for electoral votes, where Wallace would be able to achieve some of his political objectives ("Nixon
Wins" n.pag.). The candidates focused on two main topics: the Vietnam War and civil unrest. Each
candidate agrees that the civil unrest must be stopped, but George Wallace wanted to end it with
segregation while the other two candidates had more practical means. As for the issue of the
Vietnam War, LBJ asked all candidates to not speak of their solutions to the Vietnam War for that it
would weaken the United States' power at the negotiating table. Humphrey stayed silent about his
personal ordeal and agrees with LBJ's Vietnam War policies. Nixon said he had a secret plan, which
was never revealed during the election, to solve the Vietnam War. George Wallace wanted total
victory in Vietnam, but if not achieved in ninety days, he would withdraw all troops from Vietnam.
A Gallup poll on the 27th of September showed Nixon with 43% of the vote, Humphrey with 28%,
and Wallace with 21% (White 412). The Wallace Campaign, due to General LeMay's comments on

Analysis Of Kurt Vonnegut 's ' Harrison Bergeron '
POSSIBLE THESIS STATEMENTS
#1 Can we live in Kurt Vonnegut's story of "Harrison Bergeron" which is a Utopian society where
everyone is equal mentally, socially, and physically? Would we need to interact or come together
with others in society? #2 "Harrison Bergeron", a short story written by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Vonnegut
makes it well–known to his readers how dangerous it can be to have total equality. Throughout the
story, the author uses comedy, sarcasm, and tone. #3 In Kurt Vonnegut Jr.'s short story, "Harrison
Bergeron", the author argues the dangers of a world that is based on total equality. Not only does
Vonnegut expose the negative results of being alike, he also shows that we desire to be different
from each other.
In the year 2081, all people are created or forced to be equal mentally, socially, and physically. You
are "NOT" allowed to be different, whether it is better or worse, than anyone else. If you are
intelligent, you must wear a handicapping radio in your ears at all times. This radio blasts a sharp
noise, every 20 seconds or so, so you would not use your brain. If you are good looking, you must
wear masks, and if you are strong and athletic, you are weighed down with heavy weights. This
contradicts everything that we believe in about our society today. This is also what Harrison
Bergeron hated about his society. George and Hazel Bergeron are husband and wife and the parents
of Harrison Bergeron. Harrison was jailed at the age of 14 due to

The First American Invasion: The Beatles Takeover Essay
America's defenses were breached and hysteria gripped the nation. The invasion had begun.
However, the sounds of sirens did not fill the streets to warn against nuclear attacks, nor were there
warnings to stay indoors. Instead the youth of America rushed into the streets of New York and
welcomed the invaders with loud screams and insane fanaticism. The invaders were The Beatles and
the members were Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. One of the
biggest and influential bands to change the face of music as we know it took the world by storm by
introducing new sound, new fashion, and a new way of approaching music. The Beatles have etched

This is what began fostering the unique sound of The Beatles. So many different genres of music
and a breadth of diverse artists inspired them, and consequently their sound became something
entirely new. This is how The Beatles began to mold a new image of music, by taking all of the
inspirations and melding it to become the epitome of their creativity. By using the Rock and Roll
style of Elvis and combining it with other kinds of music they heard they started creating some of
the most unique music at the time. They were also making unique music because essentially they
were breaking all the rules because they didn't know any of them. They didn't have to follow the
guidelines of the instruments that they were playing because they had no formal or professional
training to teach them how to play. So instead of confining themselves in the wall of their own
training they were able to broaden their horizons and break rules. However, this unique sound alone
didn't get them to the top, after Liverpool we shift our focus towards Hamburg, where the band
perfected and fine–tuned their art, and acquired a strong stage presence. Without practice and
tedious fine–tuning, one's art will never be the best that it can possibly be. For The Beatles, this
practice arrived in an opportunity to play at nightclubs in Hamburg's red light district. (The Beatles).

The Qualities Of Audrey Hepburn In Funny Face
Regarding physical qualities, everybody has their own idiosyncrasies or quirks, things which make
them peculiar and yet interesting. These features make us who we are and even if we consider them
as flaws, they still make us beautiful somehow. The 1957 film, Funny Face, was actually a tribute to
the late Audrey Hepburn's rather unusual, quirky facial features–her large nose, thick eyebrows,
slightly crooked teeth, being doe–eyed–which all summed up to her being the epitome of a truly
beautiful woman that she was (De La Hoz 6). Audrey Kathleen Ruston Hepburn embodied both
essential aspects of inner and outer beauty which does not equate to being flawless. Voted as the

To accentuate the hips even more, slit side pockets were present (Payne, 256–257). Subsequently,
the 1960's brought the emergence of miniskirts, which was then a public shock for it was not
considered tamed. Minis were pioneered by Mary Quant and made trendy by Andre Courreges
(Murray, 112–113). Meanwhile, pants suits for women were popularized in the 70's. They were first
introduced as skinny and tailored, leaving little space for legs. Then they evolved into a flared leg
style, with a wide opening at the bottom, or bell bottoms (Payne, 261). "Pants appeared in every
form imaginable, from divided skirts and culottes to the classic, pleated–front tailored pant and the
baggy 'Fred Astaire' version." (Murray, 116) In the 1950s, excessively feminine silhouettes were
celebrated thus accentuating curves, full bosoms and narrow waists was a prevailing way for women
to dress. Nevertheless, with her sphere of influence on women, Audrey Hepburn introduced an
alternative to this limited standard of how women–through various aspects of dressing and
behaving–should be (Keogh 1). Some of the popular stars who eventually became sex symbols in
the period were Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot and Grace Kelly. Hepburn's physique however,
was totally different from these women. She did not have a big bosom or a bottom. She was not
curvy. Unlike Audrey Hepburn's

Examples Of Diasporic Culture In Home To Harlem
2. A ship is a significant term regarding the context of diasporic culture because it is a vehicle which
can move between various places. Ideally, it could be used as a tool to explore one's identity. The
image of the ship is utilized in almost all the texts which we have read thus far this semester, from
texts such as Claude McKay's Home to Harlem to the opening scenes of Zora Neale Hurston's Their
Eyes Were Watching God to Marcus Garvey's essays and speeches in Philosophy and Opinion.
Where ships remain a metaphorical component of the two fictional texts mentioned, it represents a
vehicle which would further a Pan–African agenda in the second. In Home to Harlem, McKay's
protagonist, Jake, spends his time on various forms of transportation, such as trains. However, he
begins his tale on a freighter on his way back to Harlem. The first image we see of him is one on a
ship, making a choice to come back to the United States. As an American protagonist, Jake's
diasporic identity has been created by ships through the slave trade while simultaneously being
steered by ships through his own autonomy regarding decisions on where to live at any moment. As
mentioned before, Marcus Garvey's essays and speeches hinge on the return to Africa. This return
would be accomplished through the Black Star, which never began its journey in relocating black
individuals to Africa. Overall, both texts represent ships as a vehicle which can give individuals

Harrison Bergeron, by Kurt Vonnegut Essay
Harrison Bergeron is a story written by Kurt Vonnegut. Vonnegut's story is a warning to the world
about the quest of equality, which is spreading all round in many nations with America on the lead.
The story shows the reader how the equality issue can have negative impacts on people's
individuality, and the society. The story revolves around the protagonist, Harrison Bergeron who is
an archetypical symbol that represents defiance, and individuality. He is used to represent the people
who will stand up, and protest against cruel laws imposed by the state on equality, and encourage
others to protest with him. Through the characterization of Harrison, George and Hazel, Vonnegut
shows how the equality idea can go to the extreme. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Conversely, Hazel's husband is handicapped with forty–seven pounds of birdshot strapped to his
neck, and he is obedient to the government's handicapped system. Vonnegut uses irony to
demonstrate a dysfunctional Utopia in the society. In his story, Vonnegut uses irony to depict how
easily a government can control its citizens, by assaulting their senses and individuality. Harrison
Bergeron is a valuable story that has underlying themes, which are very relevant in our current
society. The theme of equality can be seen throughout the book, and it is the principle that is
enshrined in America's constitution now, whereby they claim that all men are equal. Kurt Vonnegut
demonstrates the issue of equality in a Utopian society. Vonnegut in his story, cautions Americans
on the dangers of creating a truly equalitarian society, whereby citizens go to an extent of sacrificing
their freedom, and individuality to the state, to create a place where all people are equal. Vonnegut
creates a society whereby, all people are made equal. The beautiful are forced to wear hideous
masks to disfigure their beauty, those considered intelligent are to wear radio calls, and ear splitting
noises that are supposed to impede their thinking, and the strong are forced to wear weights around
their necks throughout the day. The author uses masks, and the weights as symbols to symbolize

President Nixon Vs. Nixon In The 1960s
The 1960 presidential campaign showed to be historic in the invention of television for
advertisements, news interviews and policy debates, something that would occupy Kennedy's
youthful hands. Four debates were created between Nixon and Kennedy, and Nixon had his tactics
helping him from the beginning of it. During them, he was slowly getting better from the flu and
looked exhausted, and then when he came to the TV studio, Nixon decided to not wear much TV
makeup, scared that the press would accuse him of trying to copy Kennedy's fresh looks of his tan
skin. Even though he shaved, Nixon's "five o'clock shadow" showed on the cameras, and his gray
suit blended into the gray background which was a difference from Kennedy's well–fitted dark suit.

By 1968, the nation was openly struggling over the war in Vietnam, not only on college campuses

was not possible and that the war would end in a stalemate. President Lyndon Johnson lamented, "If
I've lost Cronkite, I've lost the nation." As the antiwar protest continued, Nixon's campaign stayed
above the unravel, showing him as a figure of stability and appealing to what he referred to as the
"silent majority" of social conservatives who were the steady foundation of the American public.
Nixon was able to create a union of Southern and Western conservatives during the campaign. In

who is arrest for "exuberant individuality," escapes from prison and goes on national television

from watching television; she forgot what she was crying about (Alvarez). In addition, one may
determine that Hazel has attention deficit disorder because she is not to focus on anything (Themes
and cons.). According to Karen Wood, "Harrison Bergeron concerns with technological problems
only as these problems express and explicate character– the character of the human race" (Wood). In
summary, the people gave up their individuality for the "good" of society of being equal.
Vonnegut's real point behind "Harrison Bergeron" is a serious attack on the idea of enforced equality
(Mowery). At the end of the story, Vonnegut proposes that no government is capable of suppressing
the individual completely. Rather, the inner strength of human nature at its finest is more powerful
that ill–conceived laws (Mowery). In a criticism, Stanley Schatt describes the death of Harrison as,
"the lost beauty, grace, and wisdom." In summary, Today American society can benefit from

Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut
"The story is a satire, a parody of an ideological society divorced from common sense reality"
(Townsend). As Townsend stated Kurt Vonnegut makes a satire about society in his fictional short
story Harrison Bergeron, which in their society there has been attempt of conformity through the
handicaps of the people, the similarity to an authoritarian government, and the technology, whereas
the people will eventually overcome. The Kind if government authority seen both mimics and
satirizes the way Americans came to see the enemy (the Soviet Union) during the Cold War, which
was near its height of distrust and fear in the late 1950's and early 1960's. As an attempt to make the

The handicaps are based on what the individual citizens is better at and what they are not. For
example, George one of the characters in the story, for whom is very intelligent and sharp. Because,
he's so intelligent his handicap has to be a device that has a loud distinct beep that disturbs his train
of thought every twenty minutes. George also has a bag of lead balls that weigh him down. The
irony of the so call handicaps is that the people of this nation like George will get use to their
handicaps. After a while a person will get use to the weight and learn to think faster than twenty
seconds
Technology is one of the main means of communication and entertainment. Such entertainment is
television, which was invented by John Baird in 1926. In a Newton Minow speech he states that
"violence as a contributor to this wasteland" he lists what people see on the television and what they
take from it. In the story Harrison 's mother watches her son on the television he get shot to death
and does not even remember what she saw five minutes later. After the commotion was over she
says, "I could tell that one was a doozy"(Vonnegut). That is what television does to a person that is
intellectually impaired.
Harrison Bergeron is satire of today's society he makes this satire applicable through the handicaps
of the people, the similarity authoritarian government, and the technology. As a result of these

The Beatles There have been many people, known as artists, who have tried to change the world
through their art. "Art" can be paintings, music, dances, sculptures, literature, or photography. There
are many ways to communicate and express ones feelings but The Beatles did it through their
popular music. Although they didn't focus on changing the world of politics or try to protest through
their music they have songs that focus on those exact two things. In 1966, the English rock band that
consisted of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr (the Fab Four),
released a song called "Taxman" on their album Revolver. George Harrison wrote this song after he
"discovered how much of The Beatles earnings went straight to the Treasury" (Taxman | The Beatles
Bible) and "in anger at finding out what the taxman did" ("Taxman." Wikipedia.). In the song, it
states "let me tell you how it will be, there 's one for you, nineteen for me" (Revolution). George
shared the meaning of that line. He said, "In those days we paid 19 shillings and sixpence [96p] out
of every pound" (Taxman | The Beatles Bible). "Taxman" is remember by The Beatles fans as "the
first song in which John, Paul, George and Ringo have expressed their discontent towards the
governmental measures and have made a political statement" (The Beatles – "Taxman").

The Importance Of Life In My Life
"We live by hope. We do not always get all we want when we want it. But we have to believe that
someday, somehow, some way,it will be better and that we can make it so." Hubert H. Humphrey. I
am a true believer that as humans we interpret things completely different from one another no
matter how ¨simple¨ a phrase or something may be. I interpret this quote as tomorrow will be better.
I guess you can say I am one who tends to live in the future rather than the present. I am Rajveer
Sahota and this is a little insight on me. Though the question how would you describe yourself
seems like an easy one it was actually quite hard for me to answer. I would describe myself as
someone who enjoys the company of my friends and peers because it allows me to see things from
completely different perspectives. In my opinion, by surrounding yourself with people who have
different points of views, it eventually makes you much stronger as an individual. I enjoy time by
myself as well. I feel it is important to have balance of both. By spending time with myself I am
able to ground myself and recollect my thoughts. Another thing that describes me well is my
intelligence. I have always done exceptionally well in my classes and I hope to do the same in this
class as well. Some other words I think that describe me well are competitive, welcoming, and
expressive. I believe some these traits such as my competitiveness have contributed to me doing
well in classes and overall the amount of

Analysis Of George Bergeron 's ' The Novel '
Charlie Kaufman's upcoming adaptation Harrison Bergeron takes a different approach to the
original short story. In the Vonnegut's story the year is 2081 and the world is finally equal or at least
considered to be that way. Everyone wears handicaps to suppress whatever can give them an
advantage, such as headpieces that stop a person from using their brain, weights to diminish
strength, and masks to hide beauty. The short story looks at the lives of Hazel and George Bergeron
living during this new era. They have a son named Harrison, but he was taken away before the
events of the story. Largely, Vonnegut's story presents itself as a satire to communism; however
Kaufman creates a darker much different perspective. During an early screening of Kaufman's
adaptation the viewer only gets a glimpse of the beginning of the film. Kaufman begins the narrative
using the same first line of the short story, "the year was 2081 and the world was finally equal"
(Vonnegut 7). Yet, there is a noticeable dramatic difference, the narration is told through George's
perspective. The choice is interesting because upon learning this fact the narration becomes bias.
George's narration seems bitter and clearly the system he lives in is not one that he supports. Still,
the perspective is interesting because there is a lot of static during the narrated moments,
presumably from George's handicap. A smart choice as it allows the reader to understand what the
handicap is like through George's eyes. At

Essay on George Wallace: American Independent
Voting for president of the United States is a very big concern. Americans vote for their president
elect on several different categories, campaign platform, personal beliefs, Democrat or Republican
Party, and in the earlier years, whether they were from the North or the South. One such person was
George C. Wallace. Wallace campaigned in favor of segregation, but was he really for segregation,
or did he just believe that the government was stepping on state's rights? Wallace attended the
University of Alabama in 1942, and graduated with his law degree. After attending law school,
Wallace aspired as a politician. In 1946 he ran as a moderate Democrat, and was elected as the state
representative of Barbour County. (Riechers, 2003) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although Wallace changed his platform to get elected, " 'Richard Flowers, former Alabama state
attorney general, thought Wallace did it all to get elected and once in office would do the right
thing.' " (Riechers, 2003) In 1963 Wallace proved that he would stand behind his campaign from
1962. On June 11, 1963, Wallace stood in the doorway at the University of Alabama, blocking two
black students from gaining access. This was his second act of defying federal government orders.
Again in September 1963, Wallace ordered schools in Alabama closed to keep the federal
government from integrating schools. Although Wallace supported segregation, the United States
Congress was voting on the Civil Rights Act. Originally proposed by President John F. Kennedy,
President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act on July 4, 1964.
Wallace, in June 1964 decided to throw his hat in the ring for his first presidential election. He ran
as a Democrat. His platform was that he opposed to the federal government gaining power over the
states. He did carry one third of the votes in the primaries in Indiana, Maryland and Wisconsin; but
eventually he withdrew from the election.
Although Wallace continued to take his stand against segregation, the federal

Presidential Debate Over Presidential Debates
With the 2016 election in full throttle, Kennedy and Nixon's presidential debates of 1960 are still
very much a part of American democracy. Televised presidential debates have become a backbone
in an American election. Although these debates are now considered a norm in American politics,
this has not always the case. Even after the first time a presidential debate was held between
presidential candidates from across the aisle, it took another 16 years for another debate to occur. It
is highly doubtful that either Nixon or Kennedy, much less anyone else of that time period, would
have been able to foresee the effects of their debate. The presidential debates between Kennedy and
Nixon have shape American politics for what seemed like the better but as more and more research
is published, this claim is starting to fall apart. While presidential debates offer the public a chance
to compare and contrast the Republican and Democratic presidential candidate, they have an impact
on viewers that is not always positive. Rather, televised presidential debates impact voters across the
aisle and throughout levels of political awareness. An in–depth look at the history of televised
presidential debates and their impact on viewers could answer the question of whether televised
presidential debates should remain a central part of the modern American democracy.

Two years before the long and hard fought senate debate on the Civil Rights Act of 1964, on the
100th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, President John F. Kennedy declared,
"Abraham Lincoln emancipated the slaves, but in this century, our Negro citizens have emancipated
themselves"1. With this simple statement President John F. Kennedy addressed one of the oldest and
most current issues of our nation, the blatant line between the Caucasian population and the other
minorities that reside in the United States of America. The racial divide in America has existed long
before the beginning of America's struggle for independence and persists today as demonstrated
recent events such as the building of the wall on the United States/Mexico border. Though it hasn't
always provided the anguished minorities with chains, shackles, and whips there has been a copious
amount of major periods of time in which there was a great division and sense of hostility
throughout the nation. One of the most significant times is the Civil Rights Movement and the

Discrimination in Harrison Bergeron, after you my dear...
Discrimination in the Short Stories, Harrison Bergeron, after you my dear Alphonse, and The
Lottery
The trait of discrimination is the basis for the stories, Harrison Bergeron, after you my dear
Alphonse, and Lottery. Discrimination is when someone is hated or acted upon negatively for the
reason of race, sex, or nationality. In the short stories the author's feelings of discrimination are
expressed through the characters differently. In these stories the author has his own feelings and
thought depicted through the characters. By the popular theme of discrimination and racism it
suggests that these stories were written in the late sixties early seventies.

This shows discrimination against everyone because they are taking that person's freedom away and
judging them on their looks and abilities. A man named Harrison who would be a sport super star in
real life because of his outstanding talent is fitted with weights and other handicaps to make him
like everyone else. He revolts and overcomes his handicaps but is soon killed for breaking the law.
In this story discrimination plays a big part in how the main character revolts.
The next example is in the story, after you my dear alphonse. In this story a boy becomes friends
with an African American boy named Boyd and brings him home for lunch, when he gets home his
mother is shocked to see her son with this boy. The mother assumes that the father works hard labor
in the fields and that the boy will grow up and do the same. But that?s not the case, the boys father
works in a factory. This is an example of discrimination because the mother assumes things just
because he is black.
The last example of discrimination as a theme for a short story is in The Lottery. In this story a
community has a lottery every year and the winner is stoned to death. The theme of discrimination
is shown when they just pick a random person and kill them. That discriminates against that person
because they show hate for little or no reason.

Artists that Influenced The Beatles Essay
In the eyes of many, The Beatles are one of the most influential bands of the 20th century. They
have influenced me in my everyday life and so many great musicians in the past 50 years. This fact
alone, makes it hard to imagine that they were once influenced by someone else. While doing some

very end. In the following paragraphs, I will be sharing with you a few of the artists I thought to be
the most influential to The Beatles extremely successful career and why I thought them to be so
influential. In their youth, The Beatles were avid followers of early forms of Rock and Roll. Skiffle

"John was fascinated not only with Presley's voice, but also by the jagged guitar work that propelled
'Heartbreak Hotel'" (Hall 1). The Beatles admired him not only for his music, but for his style. They
quickly slicked their hair back, got sideburns, tight jeans called "drainpipes", and crepe–soled shoes,
all in true Elvis style. John was so inspired by Elvis, that it drove him to create his first skiffle group
called The Quarrymen. Another early influence of The Beatles, was one of the most influential
guitar players of early rock and roll, Chuck Berry. Berry was known for cultivation and
development of rhythm and blues music. He is known as one of rock and roll's pioneers. Not only
was Berry's style heard a lot in early Beatles albums, his songs "Roll Over Beethoven" and "Rock

one hit. Though "Please Please Me" has more of a high energy fast tempo, the song was inspired by
Roy Orbison's 1960 hit "Only the Lonely". It was John Lennon's attempt at writing a Roy Orbison
song. The Beatles were fond of Roy Orbison's song writing and distinct singing approach. "Roy
Orbison had one of the most distinctive and expressive voices, with a three to four octave range to

Harrison and Wallace McCain. Currently, there are 41 sites on six continents employing 3,600
farmers and 17,000 other workers across the world (McCain, 2015). McCain has had several
external environmental factors affecting their business including social, legal, economic, political,
and technological forces that they have had to overcome and adapt to. Due to these factors, McCain
has had numerous opportunities and threats that affect business strategy, philosophy, and initiatives.
The volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity of strategic planning and decision making and
how it affects McCain's strategy will be discussed below to show how McCain is handling changes
in the environment and their business outcomes. McCain's response to the external environment is
important for their success in business and competition within the food industry.
External Environment Strategic leadership and decision making occurs first with an assessment of
the external environment. "Strategy can be compared to a plan, except it is broader in scale, long
term in nature, and surrounded by more uncertainties" (Fernandes, 2009). Successful decision
making and assessments can shape an organizations strategy to better accommodate for threats,

Significance Of The Presidential Election Of 1892
A. Plan of Investigation
The investigation aims to evaluate the significance of third party candidates in the US presidential
election of 1892. In 1912, Teddy Roosevelt famously split the vote of the Republican party as a third
party candidate, and the investigation resolves to assess whether a third party candidate changed the
outcome of the election in 1892. The investigation will focus mainly on the influence of one
particular candidate from the Populist Party, James B. Weaver, as he won several electoral votes but
will also include John Bidwell of the Prohibition Party who also drew in votes, although he did not
gain an electoral vote. The candidate from the Socialist Labor Party will be excluded from the
investigation as he did not play a significant role in the election. A focus of the investigation will be
of the political views of those associated with the Populist party and Socialist party as well as why
they chose the a third party ticket over the major party candidates running. Two sources, Populism
and Political Realignment by L. Patrick Hughes and Populist Party Platform (1892) published by the
Omaha Morning Herald, will be evaluated for use in the investigation to demonstrate the purposes,
values, and limitations of the sources in context of the investigation.

Why Are Personal Interviews Important?
Why are personal interviews so vital when trying to evaluate the past? Perhaps it is because their
firsthand accounts of a particular occurrence are something that can not be obtained from a book.
These primary sources are crucial to anyone trying to recollect information about a certain topic
about the past. However, the interviewer must be cautious when taking someone at their word
regarding a certain event for fear of bias and a possible hazy recollection of the actual circumstances
surrounding the event in question. The subject of this paper and the interviews collected for it
pertain to events that transpired throughout the year 1968. The interviewees are all members of the
Oggenfuss family and all remember this pivotal year and the issues from it very differently. First
interviewed was James Oggenfuss (Father), who spoke with the author regarding his uncle (Dave
Smith) who served three tours in Vietnam from 1967–1971, next was Margie Riddle (Aunt) who
was attending William Paterson University during the year in question, and finally with Marcy
Oggenfuss (Grandmother) who was an average middle class mother during this time. These subjects
spoke with the interviewer at length regarding a few very important issues that were taking place in
during 1968: first was the Vietnam War, then shifting into Politics, transitioning into Civil Rights,
and finally ending up at the heart of the matter, student protest. Here are their stories. The first

President Nixon and the Vietnam War Essay
The politics of the ultratight resonated deeply with Richard Nixon. Nixon had cut his political teeth
as a young Red–hunting member of the House Un–American Activities Committee in the 1950s.
His home district in Orange Country, California, was widely known as a Birch Society stronghold.
The Los Angeles–area Birch Society claimed the membership of several political and economic
elites, including members of the Chandler family, which owned and published the Los Angeles
Times. According to the writer David Halberstam (1979, 118) the Times, which was once described
as "the most rabid Labor–bating, Red–hating paper in the United States," virtually created Richard
Nixon.

Fearing that the U.S. peace movement would use the bombings to build opposition to the war to
new heights, Nixon tried to keep the bombings secret. But in May, with U.S. forces taking heavy
losses on "Hamburger Hill" in the A–Shau Valley, news of the bombings leaked out. It was time to
change the subject. (Karnow 1983, 591, 601)
Deploying a propaganda technique that would be honed to perfection during the Gulf War thirty
years later, Nixon began to redefine the war. From the spring of 1969 on, the war was going to be
first and foremost about the men who were being sent to fight it (and not, mind you, about the
people who sent them there). In the first instance, this meant prisoners of war. The administration's
clever campaign to muster public opinion around the POW issue was launched on May 19 at a press
conference held by Defense Secretary Melvin Laird. Enthusiastically promoted by the media, the
POW issue soon dominate war news to such an extent that the writer Jonathan Schell observed that
many people were persuaded that the United States was fighting in Vietnam in order to get its
prisoners back.
The POW issue created new visions of the war for Americans. As H. Bruce Franklin (1992, 54)
wrote in M.I.A, or Mythmaking in America, "The actual photographs and TV footage of massacred
villagers, napalmed children, Vietnamese prisoners being tortured and murdered, wounded GIs

The Legacy Of The Vietnam War
In the history of the United States, few years could be viewed as being more important than 1968.
While there were years in American history of great significance, 1968 has the distinction of being a
year in which civil unrest, social progress, and the state of change were the norm, and featured
events that affected not only America, but the world as a whole. With the condition of America at
the time, society was going through changes that would go on to have massive impact on how the
world would progress, with some of these events having effects years afterwards. The Vietnam War
had been going on for nine years up to this point, and the events that would occur during 1968
would help solidify anti–war sentiments. One of these events is the Tet Offensive, which occurred
on January 30th, a campaign that targeted strategically important cites, all major US bases, and the
Saigon embassy. While the losses were much heavier on the enemy side, the effects on the ARVN
and the US army were more severe, with the realities of the war being exposed (Roark et al p. 841).
Following this, President Johnson sharply cut back on bombing efforts, and added that he was not
going to run for a second term. Another event was the My Lai Massacre, where over 300 unarmed
civilians were slaughtered. The members of Charlie Company, 11th brigade entered the village of
My Lai, with the objectives that they were given by their superiors being to 'search and destroy';

Diderot 's Critique On Art And Public Of The Eighteenth...
Diderot's critique stands out among other artistic critiques of the eighteenth century in the way he
manages to engage not only what is on the canvas, but also in the way he is able to instill each
composition's elements with significance in a greater context. Diderot's critic of Hubert Robert's
work, among others, in The Salon of 1767 serves as a lesson for both artists and observers. His
writing engages both groups through exploration of the role antiquity, imagination, and temporality
play in the creation and viewership of art. In doing so, Diderot defines what made the art and public
of the eighteenth century unique.
The new archaeological discoveries of the eighteenth century reinvigorated public interest in
antiquity, and Diderot was no exception to this trend. Diderot observes, "One rarely becomes a great
writer, a great man of letters, or a man of remarkable taste without having made a close study of the
ancients." Both the observer and artist must pay close attention to lessons from antiquity to properly
understand concepts of beauty and the ideal. However, this is does not mean Diderot condones
artists' imitation of ancient art. To Diderot, copying the ancients will never bring contemporary
artists to the level of beauty of antiquity . Instead, artists and viewers should use the ancient mode to
engage the contemporary .
Painters of ruins should be sure to paint ruins with accuracy, so that the viewer cannot mistake the
period and civilization of the ruin's

The Dangers of Total Equality in Harrison Bergeron
Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.'s "Harrison Bergeron" tells the story of an unbelievably talented young man that
defies the constraints of total equality in futuristic America, year 2081. Because of the 211th, 212th,
and 213th amendments, all citizens are subjected to a communist like state where everyone is made
to be equal in beauty, physique, and intelligence. Throughout "Harrison Bergeron," symbols such as
Harrison's defiance of the law, his physical attributes, and the setting presents the theme of the story
as the idea that total equality would be disastrous. Harrison's defiance against the government
symbolizes the rebellious nature of many people everywhere and in every time period. Harrison
breaks out of the prison that he was put into for being so dominant, just to show everyone what he
can become. He exclaims to the audience, ""Even as I stand here" he bellowed, "crippled, hobbled,
sickened – I am a greater ruler than any man who ever lived! Now watch me become what I can
become!"" (Vonnegut 5). His rebelliousness is a product of his human competitive nature.
Throughout all of time, people have always strived to be better than one another, and to be different
as well. The Olympics, Miss Universe, and the Nobel Prize are all examples of rewards people
receive when competing against one another to show exactly who is best. Being able to show one's
talents allows for more individuality to be recognized. Notably, Harrison's physical characteristics

specifically those of online technology such as websites. It will look at Heidegger's thinking about
human activity and the relationship between theory and practice, and will also examine websites
that focus on allowing the user the best possible user experience through Heidegger's notions of
ready–to–hand and co–responsibility. In western philosophy, from Descartes to Plato, it is thought
that we first need to know in theory how to do something and that everything can be explained with
theories, even human activities. Human beings observe objects as conscious subjects, which would
mean that a theoretical perspective is preferred to that of an involved and practical one (García
Peñalvo, 2008, p.32). Heidegger believes that in order for one to gain better understanding of the
world and our relationship to it, we need to do so through practical terms rather than theory first.
This is because he thinks theoretical knowledge should not imply that one knows how to do
something practically, but rather theoretical knowledge would depend on practical skills being
gained first (García Peñalvo, 2008, p.32). This is not saying that Heidegger is against theory, theory
is an important and powerful instrument if a limited one as it is only part of how human beings cope
with things and we encounter

Government Control Essay
Any government with total control is worth being feared and having a group of individuals who go
against their government. With complete control, a government is capable of committing acts
against their citizens, which can be perceived as "something good" from the government's point of
view. In 1984 by George Orwell, and "Harrison Bergeron", by Kurt Vonnegut, the main characters,
Winston and Harrison, feel oppressed by the government's acts and events, try to overthrow their
government, and go through a realization of hopelessness and defeat. With complete control, a
government is capable of committing acts against their citizens, which can be perceived as
"something good" from the government's point of view. Winston Smith feels ... Show more content

The mental and physical handicaps he wore gave him headaches and left him half blind. This is why
Harrison began to go against his government. Both Winston and Harrison decided to go rebel
against their governments and against the government's thoughts and ways. As a result, Winston's
and Harrison's actions led to greater acts of rebellion. Winston began affair with Julia and he began
to study the work of the Brotherhood leader, Emmanuel Goldstein (Orwell, 151). Winston believed
that he would have to study this to become a member of the infamous Brotherhood. The
Brotherhood is the secret, anti–government organization that Winston felt he needed to be a part of.
He believed that this would be the ultimate action against The Party. Harrison didn't need a group or
secret organization to rebel against the government. His size gave him an advantage to escape prison
(Vonnegut, 24). Harrison escaped from prison to show everyone he isn't afraid of his government.
He went on television to show everyone that he is a greater ruler than any man who ever lived.
Winston and Harrison didn't really recognize how deep they were involved against their
government. Consequently, both Winston's and Harrison's actions had severe penalties. Winston and
Julia were caught by the Thought Police with Goldstein's work and they were taken to the Ministry
of Love to be severely tortured for their actions (Orwell, 185).
Even though they knew the

How Politics Should Be Viewed By Chris Matthews
Chris Matthews, who has written Hardball, has truly changed my perspective on how politics should
be perceived and how to win within the political world through the "hardball" (13) way. "Hardball"
(13) is an idea how politicians could win and gain highest political status through "clean, aggressive
Machiavellian politics" (13). I have originally viewed the book as uninteresting because I had
lacked knowledge about politics in general. However, Chris Matthews had made the book
engrossing on how he described politics should be looked up and utilized within the political world.
I had enjoyed the book about how Chris Matthews used many recollections about various politicians
who have encountered failures through their political careers, which had motivated the politicians to
become the best politicians in the world or to achieve the highest political status. Chris Matthews
was able to captivate me and many audiences on how these political rules could be applied to our
situation if we handle the situation the "hardball" (13) way. Hardball will be a stepping stone for
aspiring politicians to learn about the political field and to take advantage of using the rules to have
successful political careers. The first chapter of the book, "It Is Not Who You Know: It's Who You
Get To Know," has truly exemplified on how politicians should take this rule as a stepping to
perceiving on how politicians could become successful within the political world or acquire the
highest political status

How Important Is The Bystander
Four people sit in a room, one directly behind the other. In front is the victim, behind is the
perpetrator, behind them is the witness, and in the very back is the authority. The victim turns their
back to the 3 people behind. On top of the victim's head is temptation. The authority, gets up from
their chair, says to the bystander, "Let me know if you need anything", and steps outside of the
room. The perpetrator with a lack of authority, has a chance. The perpetrator grabs the temptation
and the victim does not notice. The witness does notice but does not notify the authority and
becomes the bystander. With all 4 components, a crime has occurred and will continue to until
something changes. The people are stuck in their roles until anything changes. In a quote from Miles
Lehrman, a holocaust survivor, he states, "A perpetrator is not the most dangerous enemy.

John F Kennedy Dbq

  • 1. John F Kennedy Dbq John F. Kennedy was the first president to dance with a black woman at his inaugural ball (abc.com). In the 1960s segregation in the south was a progressing problem, schools and workplaces were still segregated even though there were laws. Civil rights activists wanted stand, but they simply didn't have enough power. JFK took a stand by setting the groundwork for a bill and integrating schools in the south. Before JFK was elected in 1960, segregation was a huge problem. In most southern states; To vote you would have to pass a literacy test (JFKlibray.org staff). Southern states did this intentionally because they knew seven out of ten blacks were illiterate (nces.ed.gov). Even though preventing blacks from voting was declared unconstitutional, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... JFK saw that public displays of terror against minorities embarrassed the united states. Kennedy didn't want the United States to be looked down upon, so he decided to propose a bill to legislate. Whilst writing his proposal Kennedy realised that he would lose the support and respect of white southern senators which outnumber the support of northern senators. This caused the legislative process to be in its early stages when he was assassinated so he never got to finish the process out (crf–usa.org), meaning that JFK did a major part in setting the groundwork for the civil rights bill. Although Kennedy never signed the legislation he set the groundwork for the civil rights movement. He proposed the idea and did most of the foot work, even kennedy's death helped pass the bill. After Lyndon took office, he was determined to carry out kennedy's ideas. It only took a couple of months after Kennedy died for the bill to be passed (http://loc.gov/). Johnson used the nation's sympathy to propel the campaign forward. The campaign was doing so well after his death that it went further than Kennedy had ever imagined, the bill would go on to set up the NAACP and ended the poll ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Essay on Concert CONCERT REPORT #2 Beatles Z320 For my second concert report I thought that I would write about my only experience hearing songs of the Beatles live. The Rib America Festival was hosted by The Beatles Live Repertoire. The group dressed exactly like the Beatles, even had the same names, John, Paul, George, and Ringo. I had never heard any Beatles songs live before, so that was enough to get me off my butt. Not to mention, it was free entertainment, not a bad time at all. So the show starts, and I'm not sure what to expect. Paul comes out and introduces the band, ( very good English accent ) and then started out with "I want to hold your hand ". He mentioned that their songs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Especially the age difference. There were old people, middle aged, teenagers and even little kids. There was this one woman that stuck out like a sore thumb. She was just going crazy with the dancing, and was just singing out every lyric to every song. But what was more impressing, (especially since her dancing wasn't) here kids that couldn't have been any older than 9 or 10, were also singing every lyric. They were singing songs that I had never even heard. Anyway, "Can't buy me love", "Help", and " Yesterday" were the next songs played. "Can't buy me love", "Help", were mediocre, but "Yesterday" was impressive. I have always liked that song, and it was good to hear it live. Not to mention, the band players were very good with their instruments. "A ticket to Ride", and "She loves You", were to follow. The festival was being sponsored by 104.5 fm, and the DJ from 104.5 named Bruce something or other, stepped in and played drums on "She loves You". He said that he had always wanted to play with the Beatles, and what an honor it was to be able to do this. And I'm not doubting his enthusiasm, but, I think that the whole thing was rigged. The next song was the last song before the band took their one and only break of the night. Very impressive, that this band is putting on a show like they were getting $20/ ticket. They played for about an hour and a quarter before taking the break. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Falling Into Place Analysis History ingrains itself in the modern world. From the first to last breath people take, they create the history of themselves, along with the history of their ancestors and culture. Gordon Sheppard's biography, HA! A Self–Murder Mystery, about the infamous Quebec author, Hubert Aquin, and Amy Zhang's novel, Falling Into Place, about a fictional Liz Emerson, contain the theme of exploring seemingly–inconsequential past events to demonstrate how quickly a person's past spirals out of their control. The two narrators, Gordon Sheppard and Liz's imaginary friend, reflect on various relationships and memories their respective characters experience to gain a deeper understanding of the emotional state the protagonists are in at the time of their suicides. ... In Amy Zhang's, Falling Into Place, Liz Emerson looks up to her father when she is a young girl, and losing him is catastrophic: On the first day of preschool, Liz dug her fingers into the leg of her father's jeans and held on tight as the overly sunny teacher tried to drag her into the overly sunny classroom. Her dad leaned down and told her to make a wish. Tearfully, Liz asked her daddy to stay with her. He promised to never leave. On the first day of school after her father's funeral, Monica [Liz's mother] dropped Liz off for the first time. Monica didn't try to hug her, and Liz didn't ask her to stay. (Zhang 73) As a preschool child, Liz's best friend is her father. He takes her out on little expeditions when they have days off, and allows her to be herself when her mother is out on business trips. She loves him, but he dies just as she begins aging into the state where she craves independence. His death forces her into a deeper isolation and with an absent mother, she feels more alone than ever. This contributes to her decision to crash her car and she specifically chooses the same day that her father died on. Many historical feats are occurring, John Steinbeck wins a noble peace prize, Nixon and Kennedy have the first televised debate, Mohamed Ali wins a gold medal and the Civil Rights Movement is at the precipice in America. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Governor George C. Wallace are two prominent figures throughout the Civil Rights Movement. Likewise, Dr. King stood in a place of great significance. Here, in front of the statue of President Lincoln, is where he will present his infamous "I Have a Dream" speech and it is evident of the great significance it represents. It was in 1863 that President Lincoln fought to abolish slavery and by coincidence, one hundred years later, Dr. King will be addressing more than 200,000 demonstrators fighting the same fight. On this day Dr. King will articulately responds to Governor Wallace's speech that had taken place seven months prior. As the prominent Dr. King put it, "Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children" (archives.gov). In other words, Dr. King is stating, that equality and fair justice should not be based on, ethnicity, color, or status, but in essence we are all created equal and ought to live harmoniously. Throughout these two speeches, Dr. King and Governor Wallace, both use strong evidence to strengthen their credibility and appeal to Ethos. Comparatively, both men are well educated, from the South and are well respected within their community. Governor Wallace was born a farmer's son in the year 1919. Comparison of Instrumentation In song #1, You've Got To Hide Your Love Away, features both John Lennon and Paul McCartney on the acoustic rhythm guitar, George Harrison on the acoustic lead guitar, Ringo Starr circulates between the tambourine, shaker, and maracas. Johnnie Scott plays the tenor and alto flutes (MacDonald, 148). In song #2, I'm Down, has a little different setup on instrumentation with McCartney on the electric bass, Lennon on the electric guitar, organ, Harrison on lead Electric Guitar, and Starr on the drums, bongos. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Chuck Berry was perhaps the most fundamental progenitor of the Beatles' sound," (www.liverpoolcityportal.co.uk/beatle/beatles_influences[–>0], April 13th, 2013). The solo's of electric guitar can be heard in both Berry's Johnny B Goode and I'm Down. Between both Beatles songs the differences seem to override the similarities. They both have a completely different feel. One screaming rock n roll and the other acoustic folk. The influences of each song clearly point this out. Bob Dylan an acoustic player and Little Richard a Rock N Roll player are two completely different sounding musicians. 3. Discussion of the Lyrics The lyrics of song #1 have a poetic feel to them. You've got to hide your love away, can be categorized as (2) sexuality or (8) abstract or poetic image making. The sexuality can be seen within the lyrics and even in the title of the song. • 7. Handicap Each to His Ability Kurt Vonnegut paints a picture of American society 120 years past 1961. Society has made a gradual change, but it is a drastic one nonetheless. After nearly two hundred amendments to the constitution, everyone is supposed to be equal in every way. "Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else." (232 Vonnegut). In this landscape Vonnegut shows that people will never be completely equal, and trying to force equality through controlling individuals will only create a new class system. In the sixties, as today, equality was a frequent topic of debate. The Civil Rights movement was rapidly gaining support, as was equal pay for women, protections of voting ... Her message could not be more clear; the penalty for open defiance is death. Hazel and the announcer represent the two classes who believe themselves to be benefiting from this quasi– utopian society. The announcer shows no apparent awareness of the burden forced equality has put on others. Hazel, however, briefly does when she sees Harrison killed. "Hazel's feelings ought to be a continued, placid satisfaction that all is well. But deep within her the sympathetic individual cannot be stifled" (Mowery). Fortunately, for the H–G men she is of average intelligence and quickly forgets. The average intelligence class is aware, George shows this when he thinks to himself, "[the ballerinas] weren't very good–no better than anybody else would have been..." (Vonnegut 232). The candidates focused on two main topics: the Vietnam War and civil unrest. Ideally, it could be used as a tool to explore one's identity. The image of the ship is utilized in almost all the texts which we have read thus far this semester, from texts such as Claude McKay's Home to Harlem to the opening scenes of Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God to Marcus Garvey's essays and speeches in Philosophy and Opinion. Where ships remain a metaphorical component of the two fictional texts mentioned, it represents a vehicle which would further a Pan–African agenda in the second. In Home to Harlem, McKay's protagonist, Jake, spends his time on various forms of transportation, such as trains. However, he begins his tale on a freighter on his way back to Harlem. The first image we see of him is one on a ship, making a choice to come back to the United States. As an American protagonist, Jake's diasporic identity has been created by ships through the slave trade while simultaneously being steered by ships through his own autonomy regarding decisions on where to live at any moment. Although they didn't focus on changing the world of politics or try to protest through their music they have songs that focus on those exact two things. George Harrison wrote this song after he "discovered how much of The Beatles earnings went straight to the Treasury" (Taxman | The Beatles Bible) and "in anger at finding out what the taxman did" ("Taxman." Everyone wears handicaps to suppress whatever can give them an advantage, such as headpieces that stop a person from using their brain, weights to diminish strength, and masks to hide beauty. The short story looks at the lives of Hazel and George Bergeron living during this new era. They have a son named Harrison, but he was taken away before the events of the story. Largely, Vonnegut's story presents itself as a satire to communism; however Kaufman creates a darker much different perspective. During an early screening of Kaufman's adaptation the viewer only gets a glimpse of the beginning of the film. Kaufman begins the narrative using the same first line of the short story, "the year was 2081 and the world was finally equal" (Vonnegut 7). Yet, there is a noticeable dramatic difference, the narration is told through George's perspective. The choice is interesting because upon learning this fact the narration becomes bias. George's narration seems bitter and clearly the system he lives in is not one that he supports. Still, the perspective is interesting because there is a lot of static during the narrated moments, presumably from George's handicap. A smart choice as it allows the reader to understand what the handicap is like through George's eyes. At ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 25. Essay on George Wallace: American Independent Voting for president of the United States is a very big concern. Americans vote for their president elect on several different categories, campaign platform, personal beliefs, Democrat or Republican Party, and in the earlier years, whether they were from the North or the South. One such person was George C. Wallace. Wallace campaigned in favor of segregation, but was he really for segregation, or did he just believe that the government was stepping on state's rights? Wallace attended the University of Alabama in 1942, and graduated with his law degree. After attending law school, Wallace aspired as a politician. On June 11, 1963, Wallace stood in the doorway at the University of Alabama, blocking two black students from gaining access. This was his second act of defying federal government orders. Again in September 1963, Wallace ordered schools in Alabama closed to keep the federal government from integrating schools. Although Wallace supported segregation, the United States Congress was voting on the Civil Rights Act. Originally proposed by President John F. Kennedy, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act on July 4, 1964. Wallace, in June 1964 decided to throw his hat in the ring for his first presidential election. He ran as a Democrat. • 26. Presidential Debate Over Presidential Debates With the 2016 election in full throttle, Kennedy and Nixon's presidential debates of 1960 are still very much a part of American democracy. Televised presidential debates have become a backbone in an American election. Although these debates are now considered a norm in American politics, this has not always the case. Even after the first time a presidential debate was held between presidential candidates from across the aisle, it took another 16 years for another debate to occur. It is highly doubtful that either Nixon or Kennedy, much less anyone else of that time period, would have been able to foresee the effects of their debate. The presidential debates between Kennedy and Nixon have shape American politics for what seemed like the better but as more and more research is published, this claim is starting to fall apart. While presidential debates offer the public a chance to compare and contrast the Republican and Democratic presidential candidate, they have an impact on viewers that is not always positive. Rather, televised presidential debates impact voters across the aisle and throughout levels of political awareness. An in–depth look at the history of televised presidential debates and their impact on viewers could answer the question of whether televised presidential debates should remain a central part of the modern American democracy. Kennedy addressed one of the oldest and most current issues of our nation, the blatant line between the Caucasian population and the other minorities that reside in the United States of America. The racial divide in America has existed long before the beginning of America's struggle for independence and persists today as demonstrated recent events such as the building of the wall on the United States/Mexico border. Though it hasn't always provided the anguished minorities with chains, shackles, and whips there has been a copious amount of major periods of time in which there was a great division and sense of hostility throughout the nation. The next example is in the story, after you my dear alphonse. In this story a boy becomes friends with an African American boy named Boyd and brings him home for lunch, when he gets home his mother is shocked to see her son with this boy. The mother assumes that the father works hard labor in the fields and that the boy will grow up and do the same. But that?s not the case, the boys father works in a factory. This is an example of discrimination because the mother assumes things just because he is black. The last example of discrimination as a theme for a short story is in The Lottery. • 29. Artists that Influenced The Beatles Essay In the eyes of many, The Beatles are one of the most influential bands of the 20th century. They have influenced me in my everyday life and so many great musicians in the past 50 years. This fact alone, makes it hard to imagine that they were once influenced by someone else. While doing some research, I found various artists that influenced them through the beginning of their careers until the very end. In the following paragraphs, I will be sharing with you a few of the artists I thought to be the most influential to The Beatles extremely successful career and why I thought them to be so influential. John was so inspired by Elvis, that it drove him to create his first skiffle group called The Quarrymen. Another early influence of The Beatles, was one of the most influential guitar players of early rock and roll, Chuck Berry. Berry was known for cultivation and development of rhythm and blues music. He is known as one of rock and roll's pioneers. Not only was Berry's style heard a lot in early Beatles albums, his songs "Roll Over Beethoven" and "Rock and Roll Music" were later covered by The Beatles. In 1963, The Beatles reached their first number one hit. Though "Please Please Me" has more of a high energy fast tempo, the song was inspired by Roy Orbison's 1960 hit "Only the Lonely". It was John Lennon's attempt at writing a Roy Orbison song. The Beatles were fond of Roy Orbison's song writing and distinct singing approach. "Roy Orbison had one of the most distinctive and expressive voices, with a three to four octave range to match, in rock and pop music" (Tranquillo 24). Currently, there are 41 sites on six continents employing 3,600 farmers and 17,000 other workers across the world (McCain, 2015). McCain has had several external environmental factors affecting their business including social, legal, economic, political, and technological forces that they have had to overcome and adapt to. Due to these factors, McCain has had numerous opportunities and threats that affect business strategy, philosophy, and initiatives. The volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity of strategic planning and decision making and how it affects McCain's strategy will be discussed below to show how McCain is handling changes in the environment and their business outcomes. McCain's response to the external environment is important for their success in business and competition within the food industry. External Environment Strategic leadership and decision making occurs first with an assessment of the external environment. "Strategy can be compared to a plan, except it is broader in scale, long term in nature, and surrounded by more uncertainties" (Fernandes, 2009). • 31. Significance Of The Presidential Election Of 1892 A. Plan of Investigation The investigation aims to evaluate the significance of third party candidates in the US presidential election of 1892. In 1912, Teddy Roosevelt famously split the vote of the Republican party as a third party candidate, and the investigation resolves to assess whether a third party candidate changed the outcome of the election in 1892. The investigation will focus mainly on the influence of one particular candidate from the Populist Party, James B. Weaver, as he won several electoral votes but will also include John Bidwell of the Prohibition Party who also drew in votes, although he did not gain an electoral vote. The candidate from the Socialist Labor Party will be excluded from the investigation as he did not play a significant role in the election. A focus of the investigation will be of the political views of those associated with the Populist party and Socialist party as well as why they chose the a third party ticket over the major party candidates running. Two sources, Populism and Political Realignment by L. Patrick Hughes and Populist Party Platform (1892) published by the Omaha Morning Herald, will be evaluated for use in the investigation to demonstrate the purposes, values, and limitations of the sources in context of the investigation. • 32. Why Are Personal Interviews Important? Why are personal interviews so vital when trying to evaluate the past? Perhaps it is because their firsthand accounts of a particular occurrence are something that can not be obtained from a book. These primary sources are crucial to anyone trying to recollect information about a certain topic about the past. However, the interviewer must be cautious when taking someone at their word regarding a certain event for fear of bias and a possible hazy recollection of the actual circumstances surrounding the event in question. The subject of this paper and the interviews collected for it pertain to events that transpired throughout the year 1968. The interviewees are all members of the Oggenfuss family and all remember this pivotal year and the issues from it very differently. First interviewed was James Oggenfuss (Father), who spoke with the author regarding his uncle (Dave Smith) who served three tours in Vietnam from 1967–1971, next was Margie Riddle (Aunt) who was attending William Paterson University during the year in question, and finally with Marcy Oggenfuss (Grandmother) who was an average middle class mother during this time. These subjects spoke with the interviewer at length regarding a few very important issues that were taking place in during 1968: first was the Vietnam War, then shifting into Politics, transitioning into Civil Rights, and finally ending up at the heart of the matter, student protest. • 33. President Nixon and the Vietnam War Essay The politics of the ultratight resonated deeply with Richard Nixon. Nixon had cut his political teeth as a young Red–hunting member of the House Un–American Activities Committee in the 1950s. His home district in Orange Country, California, was widely known as a Birch Society stronghold. The Los Angeles–area Birch Society claimed the membership of several political and economic elites, including members of the Chandler family, which owned and published the Los Angeles Times. According to the writer David Halberstam (1979, 118) the Times, which was once described as "the most rabid Labor–bating, Red–hating paper in the United States," virtually created Richard Nixon. But in May, with U.S. forces taking heavy losses on "Hamburger Hill" in the A–Shau Valley, news of the bombings leaked out. It was time to change the subject. (Karnow 1983, 591, 601) Deploying a propaganda technique that would be honed to perfection during the Gulf War thirty years later, Nixon began to redefine the war. From the spring of 1969 on, the war was going to be first and foremost about the men who were being sent to fight it (and not, mind you, about the people who sent them there). In the first instance, this meant prisoners of war. The administration's clever campaign to muster public opinion around the POW issue was launched on May 19 at a press conference held by Defense Secretary Melvin Laird. Enthusiastically promoted by the media, the POW issue soon dominate war news to such an extent that the writer Jonathan Schell observed that many people were persuaded that the United States was fighting in Vietnam in order to get its prisoners back. The POW issue created new visions of the war for Americans. As H. Bruce Franklin (1992, 54) wrote in M.I.A, or Mythmaking in America, "The actual photographs and TV footage of massacred villagers, napalmed children, Vietnamese prisoners being tortured and murdered, wounded GIs screaming in agony, and body bags being loaded by the dozen for ... • 34. The Legacy Of The Vietnam War In the history of the United States, few years could be viewed as being more important than 1968. While there were years in American history of great significance, 1968 has the distinction of being a year in which civil unrest, social progress, and the state of change were the norm, and featured events that affected not only America, but the world as a whole. With the condition of America at the time, society was going through changes that would go on to have massive impact on how the world would progress, with some of these events having effects years afterwards. The Vietnam War had been going on for nine years up to this point, and the events that would occur during 1968 would help solidify anti–war sentiments. One of these events is the Tet Offensive, which occurred on January 30th, a campaign that targeted strategically important cites, all major US bases, and the Saigon embassy. While the losses were much heavier on the enemy side, the effects on the ARVN and the US army were more severe, with the realities of the war being exposed (Roark et al p. 841). Following this, President Johnson sharply cut back on bombing efforts, and added that he was not going to run for a second term. Another event was the My Lai Massacre, where over 300 unarmed civilians were slaughtered. The members of Charlie Company, 11th brigade entered the village of My Lai, with the objectives that they were given by their superiors being to 'search and destroy'; Even with the passage of the Civil ... • 35. Diderot 's Critique On Art And Public Of The Eighteenth... Diderot's critique stands out among other artistic critiques of the eighteenth century in the way he manages to engage not only what is on the canvas, but also in the way he is able to instill each composition's elements with significance in a greater context. Diderot's critic of Hubert Robert's work, among others, in The Salon of 1767 serves as a lesson for both artists and observers. His writing engages both groups through exploration of the role antiquity, imagination, and temporality play in the creation and viewership of art. In doing so, Diderot defines what made the art and public of the eighteenth century unique. The new archaeological discoveries of the eighteenth century reinvigorated public interest in antiquity, and Diderot was no exception to this trend. Diderot observes, "One rarely becomes a great writer, a great man of letters, or a man of remarkable taste without having made a close study of the ancients." Both the observer and artist must pay close attention to lessons from antiquity to properly understand concepts of beauty and the ideal. However, this is does not mean Diderot condones artists' imitation of ancient art. To Diderot, copying the ancients will never bring contemporary artists to the level of beauty of antiquity . Instead, artists and viewers should use the ancient mode to engage the contemporary . • 36. The Dangers of Total Equality in Harrison Bergeron Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.'s "Harrison Bergeron" tells the story of an unbelievably talented young man that defies the constraints of total equality in futuristic America, year 2081. Because of the 211th, 212th, and 213th amendments, all citizens are subjected to a communist like state where everyone is made to be equal in beauty, physique, and intelligence. Throughout "Harrison Bergeron," symbols such as Harrison's defiance of the law, his physical attributes, and the setting presents the theme of the story as the idea that total equality would be disastrous. Harrison's defiance against the government symbolizes the rebellious nature of many people everywhere and in every time period. Harrison breaks out of the prison that he was put into for being so dominant, just to show everyone what he can become. He exclaims to the audience, ""Even as I stand here" he bellowed, "crippled, hobbled, sickened – I am a greater ruler than any man who ever lived! Now watch me become what I can become!"" (Vonnegut 5). His rebelliousness is a product of his human competitive nature. Throughout all of time, people have always strived to be better than one another, and to be different as well. The Olympics, Miss Universe, and the Nobel Prize are all examples of rewards people receive when competing against one another to show exactly who is best. Being able to show one's talents allows for more individuality to be recognized. Notably, Harrison's physical characteristics represent individuality, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. The Work Of The Theorist Martin Heidegger This essay aims to analyze and discuss the work of the theorist Martin Heidegger in relation to usable web design and how people learn in a contemporary environment by interacting with tools, specifically those of online technology such as websites. It will look at Heidegger's thinking about human activity and the relationship between theory and practice, and will also examine websites that focus on allowing the user the best possible user experience through Heidegger's notions of ready–to–hand and co–responsibility. In western philosophy, from Descartes to Plato, it is thought that we first need to know in theory how to do something and that everything can be explained with theories, even human activities. Human beings observe objects as conscious subjects, which would mean that a theoretical perspective is preferred to that of an involved and practical one (García Peñalvo, 2008, p.32). Heidegger believes that in order for one to gain better understanding of the world and our relationship to it, we need to do so through practical terms rather than theory first. This is because he thinks theoretical knowledge should not imply that one knows how to do something practically, but rather theoretical knowledge would depend on practical skills being gained first (García Peñalvo, 2008, p.32). This is not saying that Heidegger is against theory, theory is an important and powerful instrument if a limited one as it is only part of how human beings cope with things and we encounter ... How Politics Should Be Viewed By Chris Matthews Chris Matthews, who has written Hardball, has truly changed my perspective on how politics should be perceived and how to win within the political world through the "hardball" (13) way. "Hardball" (13) is an idea how politicians could win and gain highest political status through "clean, aggressive Machiavellian politics" (13). I have originally viewed the book as uninteresting because I had lacked knowledge about politics in general. However, Chris Matthews had made the book engrossing on how he described politics should be looked up and utilized within the political world. I had enjoyed the book about how Chris Matthews used many recollections about various politicians who have encountered failures through their political careers, which had motivated the politicians to become the best politicians in the world or to achieve the highest political status. Chris Matthews was able to captivate me and many audiences on how these political rules could be applied to our situation if we handle the situation the "hardball" (13) way.
