Positivistic Childhood Verbal Abuse
1. Positivistic Childhood Verbal Abuse
The purpose of this study is to describe, in an attempt to understand, the lived experiences and the
meanings given to these experiences by adult women and men who were verbally abused on their
childhood. The present study used a basic qualitative inquiry informed by hermeneutic
phenomenology in order to add to the previous positivistic research done in the area of childhood
verbal abuse and to bring much needed innovative, in–depth understanding to a sensitive issue. It is
only by studying a topic comprehensively that new insights and explanations can arise to explain the
effects and dynamics inherent in verbal abuse. To the Students this study will help them to know
what the possible effects of their negative childhood experiences are in

3. Verbal Abuse Case Study
1.0 Chosen aspect The theme I've chosen to analyse is abuse. The aspect of abuse i'd be focusing on
is that verbal abuse toward children is often overlooked today. I happen to come across an
interesting statistic of verbal abuse among teens, which has brought about my interest in this topic.
Evidently from the website Save Voices, 62% of teenagers (age 11–14) who have been in a
relationship claims they recognise friends who have been verbally abused by respective partners
(Safe Voices 2014). I was curious if verbal abuse would affect children emotions.
2.0 Critical evaluation of findings Verbal abuse encourages children to pick up negative languages.
Children tend to apply these unfavourable words in their daily lives. In time when problem arises,
children will begin to use foul language they hear as an excuse (Elish 2006). The videoclip I found
justifies the abuser asking her step–son for money in a rude manner. The boy asks his step–mom to
"ask nicely" but after several attempts and still being verbally abused, he uses vulgar words back
against his step–mother (Nice stepmom 2006). "Monkey see monkey do" Children learn from what
is shown to them despite knowing it is bad. They may think of these negative languages as a
positive behaviour.
Verbal abuse against children has recently grew serious. More adolescents concerning this matter
has been exposed to the media. Matter of verbal abuse by teacher towards children was a popular
negative experience answered by college

5. The Effects Of Workplace Violence On The Workplace
Workplace violence (WPV) is defined as "any act or threat of physical violence, harassment,
intimidation, or other threatening disruptive behavior that occurs at the work site" (OSHA, n.d.,
para. 1). For the nursing profession these threats include the following sources: nurse to nurse,
patient to nurse, relatives to nurse, other health professionals to nurse. WPV happens in all
healthcare settings, however some units are known to have higher incidences than others. One
healthcare setting that is well known for having high incidences of patient to nurse violence is the
ED. Factors that contribute to the increase of WPV in the ED include: long wait times, patients with
mental disorders, patients who have a history of violence, and patients ... Show more content on

However, he continued to curse at us and even tried spitting at nurse. The nurse continued to inform
him that in order to fully assess him, so that we could see the extent of injuries and treat him, we
needed him to calm down. As I was pulling the gown out to ask him to change, he ripped the gown
from my hands. Before I knew it, he had it tied around the nurse's neck, choking him. I immediately
called out for help; meanwhile the nurse was able to get out of the choke hold, and the police were
there soon after to help contain him. In the end, the nurse nor the patient were seriously injured. The
nurse went on to finish his shift and a report was filed. After a few days, I was talking to the nurse
and asked him what was done about the incident to which he replied, "Nothing, there is nothing we
can do, we do run the incident up the chain, but nothing will be done, it is just part of what we do
here." This mindset that WPV is "just part of the job" is what makes this issue even more severe.
WPV is essentially promoted by the healthcare staff since it is not thought of as an issue. The
development of programs and policies to prevent WPV is essential throughout healthcare
institutions and should include programs that are unit specific. This is critical to better ensure the
safety of both nurses and patients. The repercussions of not implementing such programs are
numerous and its negative effects are far

7. Relationships And Verbal Abuse
verbal abuse is unpredictable. Her separate self can appear due to anything from her physical
presence, to saying something differently then he imagined, to asking a question about his week
(only a separate person wouldn't know exactly what's going on in his mind.), to having unique
talents, to having friends, etc.
once the abuser finds that their relationship is secure, they will start controlling. At first they seem
like the best guy. He treats her so well, is considerate and understanding. Then, once he feels the
relationship is secure, he begins to control. Some things that might secure the relationship are
sending out wedding invitations, having a child, moving to a new city (which means you are

9. Verbal Abuse In My Family
In my family, there is a generational theme of emotional/ verbal abuse coming from the male to the
female. It also works in a way that the female typically ends up apologizing. This has shown itself in
my brother's relationship with his girlfriend. He cannot control his anger, much alike to my father,
and says things that he knows will hurt her, and most of the time are not true. I believe I observed
this behavior from my parents and through these observations, I was led into an abusive relationship
without realizing it. On the other hand, I believe my brother observed how my father had so much
power over my mother, so when he does not get his way he is not afraid to hurt the person he
"loves", comparable to my father. While my family is in the turmoil of fighting and yelling, I have
also learned that it is not okay to show emotions. In fact, if you show emotions you are belittled and
spoken down to, which only makes the abuse worse. My father has a craving for power, an example
of his abusive tenancies and the loss of emotional expression in my household can be shown in a
conversation we had this summer. I do not know what we were speaking about, but I believe it was
history of some event happening. He thought it was one date and I remembered it was another, so I
kindly corrected him. This caused him to snap into one of his anger out bursts and he told me I
thought I was so much better than he was, and why am I such a bitch to him and everyone else. It

Recommendation: Education on the effects of verbal abuse and mental health issues should be
taught to the public and more centers for person who are verbally abused need to be open freely to
the public, many persons I talked to still believe that mental health and psychological issues are not
a problem that should not be addressed, and the issue falls directly upon the person to fix their self
with no form of support.
Concluding Sentence: we have been taught as kids that words can be simply ignored without any
form of injury to the person, a good example of this in Western Cultures could be shown in the
simple nursery rhyme "sticks and stones may break my bones but words would never hurt me", but
recently this has been proven to incorrect, words are just as damaging as any physical blow, where

You're Ugly! Stupid! Can you do anything right? I wished you were never born! Does any of these
words sound familiar or bring back memories. If they do then you are not alone, there are many
people on a daily basis who suffer from verbal–emotional abuse. In today's society too many of our
children live in homes where they face verbal–emotional abuse on a regular basis. In this paper we
will discuss what verbal emotional abuse is, why so many children face verbal–emotional abuse and
how to tell what the signs of verbal emotional abuse are in order to assist a child in need. Verbal
emotional abuse is defined in many ways because there are so many underlying meanings that fall
into this category. According to Love is Respect.org, verbal emotional abuse is defined as "non–

15. A Brief Note On Crime, Rape, And Theft
There are a lot of wrong doing in the world today. People within the society chooses what is
considered the wrong for the majority and turn it into a crime. Crime could be broken down into 2
categories, Mala in se and Mala prohibita crimes. Mala in se are crimes that everyone is taught that
is bad. These crimes affect people and the view of that society as a hole. Some examples of Mala in
se crimes are murder, rape, and theft. Mala prohibita crimes are put in place by the government to
politically control society. The government tends to put laws into place that benefits the most
powerful and influential political parties at that time. Some examples of Mala prohibita crimes are
hunting without a license, saggy pants, and peeing outside. A significant difference between Mala n
se and mala prohibita lies between morals and power. Mala in se laws focuses on the citizens and
the public views of that society. These crimes are based on the majority morals and ethical views on
life. Mala prohibita tend to be guided by the wealthy and powerful politicians. These laws are
sometimes implemented by the people who tend to control the society for their best interest.
Government officials and powerful social groups tend to implement laws that affect other social
groups ethics and moral standards.
Louisiana has a mala prohibita law put in place that denies individuals, their freedom to express
themselves through fashion. Counter Current News Editorial Team stated "A Louisiana law

17. Examples Of Verbal Abuse In A Nursing Home
Is Your Loved One Being Verbally Abused In a Nursing Home?
When the difficult decision is made to put your elderly loved one into a nursing home, it is done
with expressed assurance that he or she is going to receive compassionate and professional care.
Unfortunately, some nursing homes fail to adequately screen the individuals they hire as nurses or
caretakers and consequently, employees with bad judgement may find themselves in a position to
take advantage of an elderly patient. This can take the form of emotional abuse where a frail and
sometimes mentally incapacitated elderly patient is subject to verbal abuse by the staff of a nursing
home.
If you have suspicions that your elderly loved one is the victim of verbal abuse in a nursing home,
you can take legal action to have the nursing home brought to justice for failing to provide
reasonable and adequate care for your loved one. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Elderly victims of verbal abuse may not comprehend the magnitude of the situation they find
themselves in. This type of abuse includes threats, intimidation, derogatory name–calling and
constant belittling. Threats can take a variety of forms including telling the patient that they are
going to be physically harmed if their behavior doesn't change or suggesting that the patient's family
doesn't care about them.
Often in cases of verbal abuse, it occurs alongside other forms of abuse like neglect and physical
abuse. For this reason, the verbal abuse of a patient in a nursing home is difficult to detect.
Unfortunately this is the main reason why verbal abuse claims by elderly nursing home patients are
often dismissed.

19. Verbal Abuse In Janie's Reluctance
How many problematic situations could be prevented if people were to simply talk things out? One
of the most vexing aspects of the novel is not Jody's constant verbal abuse, but Janie's submission to
said abuse. Janie's reluctance to challenge the men she holds accountable for her problems portrays
her character as submissive, a trait that her anxiety will never allow her to get rid of. While many
problems that Janie doesn't deserve manage to find their way to her anyway, the outcomes are
partially her fault since she never attempts to resolve them, instead opting to place the blame on
someone else. "Naw, Jody, it wasn't because Ah didn't have no sympathy. Ah had uh lavish uh dat.
Ah just didn't never git no chance tuh use none of it. You wouldn't let me." (85) Jody may not be the
type of man who deserves any sympathy, but the last sentence of this quote from Janie goes to show
where she believes the root of the problem lies. Instead of confronting her husband about the issues

"It's so easy to make yo'self out God Almighty when you ain't got nodiin' tuh strain against but

the men of her town, and even directs her words to those men. By comparing them to God and
women to chickens, she manages to create a perfect metaphor for the power dynamic of their reality.
"Janie did what she had never done before, that is, thrust herself into the conversation." (75) Though
submissive at heart, Janie somehow musters up enough courage to challenge the status quo.
However, Janie's forthright approach to addressing sexism falls on deaf ears, and she is ridiculed by
the townsfolk and her husband alike. Though idealistic and courageous at times, the fact that she

25. What Is Verbal Abuse?
When you hear the word "abuse", you probably think of someone being physically hurt. But abuse
comes in many other forms; emotional, verbal, and sexual. Specifically, verbal abuse in marriage
can often be overlooked because it does not leave physical scars and usually occurs in private.
Verbal abuse can come from either partner, male or female. Any race, color, or religion. The abuser
wants to take control and will eventually destroy the victim emotionally. Not only does it affect the
victim, but also the whole family. This abuse first has to be identified before it can be dealt with
effectively. Verbal abuse in marriage is very detrimental to the marriage and has many far reaching
consequences.
Verbal abuse has one, universal definition: the constant demeaning of another (Skerritt, 2006). The
goal of the abuser is to control and manipulate. The abuser manipulates/controls the victim with fear
or shame. This makes the victim feel crazy. Verbal attacks are usually unpredictable and can take
many different forms: Making mean or crude jokes about you, name calling, blaming his/her
behavior on you, derogatory criticism about your looks, threatening you, and abusive anger
(verbalabuse.com). Many people strictly think of verbal abuse as name calling, but it involves so
much more than that. "Verbal abuse is a behavior, not a disease. But verbal abuse, like all kinds of

Mama will not allow him to spend obtained insurance check for 10,000 dollars, and instead plans to

she will be able to fulfill her dreams of becoming a doctor. He, however, will have to keep living a
monotonous life, not being able to support his family the way that he would like. He is also angry
because Beneatha will get a large sum of Mama's insurance money, and he will not receive a penny.

Dave Pelzer, the author of "Help Yourself for Teens Real life Advice for Real Life Challenges"
described growing up in an abusive home where his mother was under the influence throughout
every attack (Pelzer 2). Another cause of verbal abuse found in research was mentally ill and
unstable parents. Emma Durocher, for example, "was raised by two people, each with several
undiagnosed mental illnesses" (Durocher). Even though this cause of abuse isn't as common as
cultural discipline the effects still result the same.
The major causes of verbal abuse found through research is cultural discipline from parents or
guardians. The UNICEF Report: 300 Million Cases Of Violence Against Children Ages 2 To 4
believes "violence has a familiar face because it can affect children and adolescents in familiar
places, such as at home, in school, their surroundings and from people they know. In most countries
there is absolutely no difference in the exposure to violence, regardless of socioeconomic factors,
whether they are rich or poor. One reason is that in many cultures [corporal punishment at school
and at home] is perceived as the way to address and implement discipline. It is accepted and almost
dismissed as not being an issue" (Cole) . This repeated theme contributes to the factor of
unawareness on verbal abuse towards adolescent and society allowing abuse to be dismissed and
seen as a disciplinary option..

43. The Effects of Physical and Verbal Abuse on Children
One of the rising issues among children in our society today is the verbal and physical abuse they
are receiving from their parents and guardians. This is creating unhealthy families and dysfunctional
environments where children are the victims of these abusive homes. Another cause of concern is
the psychological and emotional detachment abusive children have to endure.
These affects occur when they have a history of being neglected or physically abused. A
UNICEF on child wellbeing reported that the United States and the United Kingdom are ranked
lowest among industrial nations with respect to child well being. They also found that it's more
common for child abuse to occur in single–parent families than in families where ... Show more

Which keeps them from ever achieving their intellectual potential. Another psychological concern is
the physical stress. If the child is continually exposed to multiple violent and trauma acts, they will
be physically stressed out. When the child experiences this act over and over again, there are
permanent psychological changes. A child having over–reactions to things that remind them of the
original event can create difficulty in concentration and attention. There are emotional effects such
as isolation and inability to trust other peers. This essentially can translate into low–self esteem and
depression. In one long–term study, "as many as 80 percent of young adults who had been abused
met the diagnostic criteria for at least one psychiatric disorder at age 21. These young adults
exhibited many problems, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and suicide attempts"(
Silverman, Reinherz & Giaconia, 1996). NSCAW found that children who were placed out of
home–care due to abuse or neglect were scored lower on measures of cognitive capacity, language
development, and academic achievement. In other words, they experienced difficulties with their
academics being neglected or abused by parents or relatives. Other factors related to child abuse is
shyness. More abused children will tend to shy away from meeting new people. This creates
antisocial traits as they grow up. Raised under these conditions leads

I am a former student of High School, while I was a student at there was a time where a teacher got
angry at me over a simple misunderstanding over food and screamed at me at the top of their lungs
for several minutes this is a form of emotional and verbal abuse to a child. As a child I was sensitive
and timid and disliked conflict, because I grew up in an environment where there was much conflict
and as such I avoided it as much as possible. As I grew up in elementary school I was bullied by
other classmates, people would push me from behind or trip me so that I would fall down or spread
rumors behind my back but I was never harassed by a teacher because I believed them to be above

Abstract
This study examined the effects of growing up with verbal abuse on adult behavior. Forty one
Bloomfield college students were given surveys to fill out that asked them to rate their childhood
experiences regarding verbal abuse, and their behavior on a 1 to 5 scale (from never to frequently).
We predicted that people who were verbally abused during their childhood, had an aggressive
demeanor in adulthood. According to our research, we discovered that participants who reported
they acted aggressively and got into altercations were verbally abused during their childhood or
witnessed someone being verbally abused.

Effects of Verbal Abuse During Childhood on Adult Behavior
When most people think of abuse they think of something physical. Verbal abuse is a serious issue
that not enough attention is paid to it. To be verbally abused means being attacked with words that
injure an individual, word that cause someone to believe false statements of themselves.
The aim for this study was to find a relationship between verbal abuse during childhood and adult
behavior. Previous research suggest that individuals who've experienced verbal abuse during their
childhood suffered behavioral issues.
Researchers have found a relationship between verbal abuse and bipolar disorder. Many findings
shown how physical and sexual abuse cause bipolar

You have raised an important point that nurses have to deal with daily at their workplace. According
to Edward, Ousey, Warelow, Lui (2014), unfortunately, more than any other occupations, verbal
abuse is common in the nursing profession. The verbal abuse may come from patients, family
members, or physician. I think this unfortunate aggression emanated from a misunderstanding of the
nature of nurses' job.
More flabbergasting is doctors' assumption of nurses as labors, rather than as mental and emotional
workers. Physician verbal abuse is, therefore, the most painful for nurses. Nurse see doctors as a
care partner and as such expect them to be respectful and show sympathy towards nurses, because,
unlike physicians, nurses take care of the whole

61. Verbal Abuse: Reality I And Reality Two By Patricia Evens
What is verbal abuse? Verbal abuse is when somebody uses words to harshly criticize, putdown,
insult, or discourage another person. Verbal abuse comes in many types and range from insults to
personal attacks with statements such as "You are stupid!" to "You never have time to do this."
Verbal abuse can be seen as a manipulative way of controlling a person which does not benefit any
relationship. Typically it is seen more in romantic relationship where a partner would try to control
the other person through the use of words. Patricia Evens, a critically acclaimed author, has written
several books on verbal abuse, notes that women are more likely to be victims of verbal abuse.
Evens notes that there are two realities in play here: Reality I and Reality II (Evens 29). Reality I is
more oriented towards a person with power who controls others (Evens 29). On the other side,
Reality II is more towards the idea of a mutual and cooperative person who shows more personal
control of themselves (Evens 29). Evens also note ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

with the large nose and notoriously grandiose temper defied all odds as she achieved global success.
Growing up with incessant bullying and verbal abuse from classmates, producers, and even family;
Streisand unceasingly struggled with "gnawing self–doubt about the way she looked" and the talent

As an adult, she logically believed she had to convince herself and others, she was talented enough
to perform. The need to become "competent at everything" is one predominant symptom of anxiety

impacted her health and career. The Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) states
that performer's anxiety can take a "huge toll on self–confidence and self–esteem". The pressure she
put on herself resulted in stressed–induced anxiety attacks and physical sickness. Before one

65. Beauty 's Take On Life
Beauty's Take on Life
Elisabeth Kübler–Ross states that "people are like stained – glass windows. They sparkle and shine
when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in; their true beauty is revealed only if there is a
light from within." She explains what the two types of beauty are; inner and outer beauty. Beauty is
a viewpoint and it depends on different factors based on the person's liking. People make first
impressions based on one's physical beauty, although it is their inner beauty that makes them
distinct. Inner and outer beauty defines people in how it is achieved, how society and culture view it,
and the risks related to beauty.
Outer beauty is the physical beauty, while inner beauty is who you are. Outer beauty is your
complexion, appearance, physical features, and clothing. Outer beauty is inherited from your parents
and the individual does not get to pick what they will look like. Outer beauty is programmed
through DNA from family. Inner beauty is formed by your experiences, mindset, and personality.
Outer beauty changes over time due to exterior and environmental changes, while inner beauty does
not really change. Usually over time, the person becomes wiser and develops more qualities. Outer
beauty may be manipulated with makeup to achieve the look that is desired. Inner beauty is difficult
to mask or change, since it defines the person. Outer beauty is how people make a first impression
of that person, but that impression usually changes once they get to

Trash–talking is part of many sports where the team indulges in verbal sparring or verbal jousting
with their opponents to gain a psychological advantage over them. They speak some nasty things to

Professional baseball is no different in that aspect. However, it is a professional sport and there are
certain limits. It is mentioned that they cannot trash–talk in public. Trash–talk can cause emotions to

73. The Death Of Trotsky By David Ives
Violence has been a part of plays for centuries. It keeps the play interesting and intriguing, but
however, most of the time there is a greater purpose of violence. When looking for it in plays one
would automatically look for weapons or signs of physically harming someone like. However,
verbiage can be an act of violence as well. The phrase, "sticks and stones may break my bones, but
words will never hurt me is false. Your tongue has no bones, but is strong enough to hurt another
person. Like in the play The Stronger by August Strindberg where Miss Y is verbally insulted
countless of times. Whereas in the play Variations on the Death of Trotsky by David Ives one can
see the physical violence by the tragic murder that occurred. After distinguishing where the violence
is coming from one can then analyze the true role of the violence and compare how the violence
affect the dramas.
When looking at The Stronger you can see just how Miss Y in verbally insulted over and over again
by Mrs. X. While Miss Y is just sitting at a table by herself minding her own business when Mrs. X
shows up. During the entire play Miss Y does not say one word while Mrs. X insults her and says
rude things like, "Poor Amelia, I pity you, nevertheless, because I knew you are unhappy, unhappy
like one who has been wounded, and angry because you are wounded."() She just assumes that she
is unhappy because she is in a café by herself on a holiday. She does not even ask her if she is

77. The Help Movie Analysis
The movie "The Help", about a young woman who wants to interview black maids during the 1960's
and make their stories into a book to show others what the miserable life of the maids was like, the
process of this wasn't easy for them because of laws and the fear of getting caught. Throughout the
movie you will also see the struggles and disrespect that the maids would have to go through almost
daily, this affected them but also their children in ways. From this small explanation you can tell this
movie has several actions that deal with psychological topics, but out of all the varieties, three really
caught my eye, which were children and trauma, abuse and discrimination. These three topics were
seen greatly throughout this movie which is why they're important. Body Paragraph
Children and trauma were seen throughout this movie a lot, for example white people would hire
black maids to care for their children. Most children would look up to their maid as more of a
mother figure than their own mother. The innocent minds of the children usually don't see the blacks
negatively like their own white parents did because usually the child would get very attached to the
maid and look up to them, but sadly they didn't always stick to that mentality, for example Hilly
grew up with a maid but she seems to discriminate and hate the blacks the most out of everyone in
the movie. Throughout the movie you will see the bond of the maid Aibileen and the white baby
Mae Mobley she cared for. Mae's mother didn't pay as much attention to her as Aibileen did. Mae
Mobley's own mother would bring her down and didn't know how to properly raise her, while
Aibileen treated her as if she were her own child and gave her so much love and care which is why
Mae sees Aibileen as her mother figure. Mae Mobley had such a strong attachment which is why she
was left so traumatic and in great sadness because Aibileen was blamed for an action she didn't do
by Hilly causing her to get fired which left Mae feeling that way. As Aibileen said her goodbyes
Mae Mobley was in tears begging for her to stay, as Mae saw Aibileen walk out the door she
exploded into more tears, banging on the window wanting her back. Another psychological theme I
saw greatly
