Censorship In Alaskan Culture
A culture discussed in class that had interesting difference to American culture was Alaskan storytelling
where the stressed importance was the relationship of the storyteller to the listener or audience. I
imagined Alaskan populations spread out all over the large state, thus, my amazement that the oral
tradition of storytelling were used with great significance to pass on information, emphasize morals,
and describe the culture to new generations.
A difference that was a surprise was that the children listening to these stories in the Alaskan culture
were never allowed to interrupt the storyteller, where most children in America are more boisterous and
do not have the same level of respect to always sit quietly. However, a similarity between ... Show more

The word games like Telephone and the game where a story is made one word at a time are quick
games that can involve large or small size groups. Also these games are simple to understand for
children of any age and have little requirements. Thus, every child would be able to participate and
impact the stories being created. These types of games also build relationships with others in a fun way
so that a child may learn to socialize. Socializing within these easy games may be especially helpful if a
few children seem to keep more to themselves or are

104 Responses to "The Four Day Work Week" 1. AVS says: July 28th, 2009 at 2:33 pm Agree with this
but why stick to a 40 hour work week? Reduce it to 35 hours. 2. david says: July 28th, 2009 at 2:33 pm
In the short term the staggered week does not improve building energy efficiency. In the long term it
could be substantially better, because you build based on the 80% of people that are there on any given
workweek, rather than for the full workforce. Smaller buildings = less energy use, in addition to the
fewer resources used to put the building up in the first place. 3. Drew Miller says: July 28th, 2009 at

As the late great president of Tanzania, real socialism doesn't involve more free time and less work.

The Story Of A Ghost Town : A Story
Ghost Town The weather seems to match the old, rundown town; gloomy, dark, always raining. The
people looked dull and a melancholy aura followed most everybody. There is a reason to all this
sadness though, a curse. An old mage casted a spell on the town and its people centuries ago. During
the day, the townsfolk were safe, but the night belonged to the mythical creatures of the world. Anyone
who goes out after dark is said to turn into one of the creatures and roam the city, forever stuck in a
never ending dream. Many people were going missing, most recent the parents of a girl named Eren.
The town adopted her as a whole, but she stayed at an orphanage. She could be found in the old library,
silently sitting, only making sound to flip a page. On a chilly October evening, she was scanning the
books with her eyes, when a small red book peaked her interest. As she dragged her fingers down the
spine of the book, it smelled of dust, she slowly opened it to the first page. She gasped and shut it when
she heard footsteps and soft giggling. Eren sighed deeply, but a small smile crept on her lips, it was
only her friends trying to scare her for the millionth time. "I know it's you guys, cut it out." The
footsteps stopped and there was sume shushing, but eventually her best friend Amora came out, still
clad in her school uniform. "Sorry sorry, just wanted to have a little fun, it's always so boring in here
with all the books and the reading. I want you to look happier. Anyways

I Had Been Out Of The Hospital For Two Weeks Essay
I had been out of the hospital for two weeks. I was staying on track with my medicine, with the help of
my husband Bryon. I have been dealing with depression for a while now and I eventually ended up
being emitted to the hospital. I decided to take time off work for a while until I got back in the swing of
things. Me and my husband Bryon decided that was the best thing to do. Every day Bryon would make
sure I took my medicine in the morning before he went to work and every evening when he got back.
That's what my psychiatrist recommended we do. I had been suicidal, and they wanted to make sure
didn't try anything to take my life. Bryon removed all of the sharp objects from the house, like knives
and scissors. I didn't feel like all of that was necessary, but I could see why he did that with the state of
mind I was in before I was emitted to the hospital. Battling with severe depression took a toll on me.
There was no definite cause for my depression either. It's like no matter how good things were going in
my life, there would always be a little bit of sadness that lingered. I was feeling confident that I was
going to really get better and more stable. It is just so hard sometimes to find the medicine that worked.
It is like trial and error. My medicine would have to be adjusted to get me feeling the best I could, but I
was hoping that this was a real fix. I mean I knew that I would not always be happy because in life we
all go through ups and downs, but I just wanted to

The Drone Age Is Coming Per Galeotti
Executive Summary
The drone age is coming per Galeotti . It has been estimated that annual spending on drones around the
world will almost double to $11.4 billion by 2022. New technology has been driven by the military, and
drones are critical to military operations. Due to changing times, drone use is rapidly adjusting to
commercial use by civilians.
This drone revolution has massive implications, ranging from legal and moral to economic and
geopolitical. It will be a deeply disruptive technology, able on the one hand to provide undreamt–of
capacities to impoverished people and countries, and on the other to widen the gap between haves and
have–nots. It may prove a creative, empowering experience, but also has the potential to be destructive,
destabilizing and divisive.
Drone one day will fight our wars and be a huge asset on the battlefield as well as controlling hostile or
volatile situations.
Currently, drone technology is being driven by military applications, and this will continue as they
become increasingly varied in their roles. Drones will do our work. Drones will carry out tasks humans
cannot, or do not want to do themselves. From remotely piloted ambulances to leading SWAT raids in
hostile situations, from collecting garbage to moving goods, they become ubiquitous, even making their
way into the media, gathering news footage and becoming entertainment tools.
Their ability to linger for long periods of time allows this real–time intelligence to be

I crept back into the Lynch 's, Ross trailing close behind me. "You know we don 't have to sneak in to
my own house," he whispered loudly. I shushed him, squeaking the front door closed. This was the
tricky part, stealthily getting past the rest of the family to the guest bedroom. Ross 's bare feet fumbled
carelessly as if he not learned to walk quietly, and instead relied on the hushed muffle of my steps. I
imagined I was in the FBI, Ross being my loud side kick. My brain tuned out sounds around me as I
played my own spy theme music. Ba na na na na na duh nuhh. My mind was interrupted by soft words.
I listened intently to the jabbing voices heard nearby, perhaps in the kitchen or living room. It was

"Good morning sunshine," Riker teased Ross, his voice hitched as his eyes met mine. I hadn 't thought
about him since the night before, images of him dancing and laughing with that girl. My stomach

totally and utterly happy? I scanned the sun lit room, Serenity wasn 't there, she must had gone home
last night like I should have. "Why can 't my girlfriend sleepover but Riker 's can?" Rocky whined.
Ross 's fist balled slightly, in close proximity to mine. "My girlfriend did," Ellington stuck his tongue
out through his smile. "She needed one more day away from that place, give her a break. Right?" He
patted the open seat next to him, welcoming me to come closer. For some odd reason I obeyed his
every move. His plate was clean, food residue lightly painted the usual white. My stomach growled
angrily with rage but I was distracted as Riker 's consuming eyes sunk into mine. His head and voice
lowered to mine, "Can we talk?" Before I could answer his chair huffed against the floor, his hand
placed in front of my nose to help me up. I decided not to take it, I knew Ross was watching. Riker and
I filed in at the step of the long, descending stairs. "I wanna show you something." He spoke

Hope In Escape From Camp 14
Hope enables us to endure through even the most miserable situations. The reason why hope is such a
powerful force because it is not just a "wish" that everything that will be alright, Hope is a belief that
the problems will eventually subside if it is endured for long enough. Just the belief that a person still
have something to live for in the face of utter defeat, is enough for people to keep going. An example of
this happening is during Nazi–era concentration camp in Bergen Belsen, where the tragic Anne Frank
died only one month before rescue. " Women who knew Anne Frank in the Bergen Belsen camp said
that neither hunger nor typhus killed the young girl... she lost the will to live after the death of her sister
Margot." (Harden 105) Hope ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the context of the book Escape from Camp 14, It is a fact that currently North Korea is the only true
totalitarian dictatorship to exist in the modern world. If all other socialist government forms have failed
apart from North Korea, there must be something they have done differently to keep the flow of power
the same since its existence. North Korea's government has managed to keep such a tight hold on the
oppression of their people, that they can effectively silence them through an efficient system of keeping
their citizens ignorant on what is happening outside their lives. Shin was required to learn the ten rules
of camp 14 since childhood, and until his encounter with Park, he has known nothing other than what
the guards tell him. As Shin has recited himself "To fulfill one's work quota is to wash away sins, as
well as to recompence the state for the forgiveness it has shown" (Harden 195) The camp is effectively
crushing the hope of the prisoners by limiting their knowledge to only what the state wants them to
know, so there cannot be any rebellion if the prisoners' hopes are all crushed by the North Korean
government. Since the government has successfully "bred" the rebellious nature of their prisoners out
of them since childhood, the prisoners believe that everything the guards say must be the truth,
including one of the main sources of hope like standing up to what others believe in. Another example
of hope being closely correlated to sticking up to beliefs that are right within the book Hey
Nostradamus! Happens directly after the events in the school shooting. Officers have brought Jason
back home to his parents, and told them that Jason saved a lot of people today because he managed to

Essay on Our Decisions and a Predetermined Fate: Oedipus...
Since the dawn of time prophecies have supposedly been passed down directly from the gods unto the
prophets. In the ancient Grecian time, god's word was worshipped and fate was all but fact. In the bible,
Moses was one of the most famous prophets. In the 1500s, Nostradamus, who was a French apothecary
and seer, wrote an entire collection of prophecies. Throughout history there have been theses men and
many more who claimed to know details about the future. Why would so many prophecies become
world renowned if there were no truths to them? More importantly, does fate even exist? I believe that
people have the will to make their own choices and make decisions throughout their daily life however

(Sophocles)
The shepherd gives Oedipus the affirmation that what he refused to believe is indeed true. He accepts
that fate has caught up with him after all and lead his life into the foreseen ruins. Even though Oedipus
has tried his whole life to escape the prophecy that he had been foretold, he still faces the same end that
had been prophesized of him not only by the oracle of Delphi but by Teiresias as well. One example of
modern day prophecies are the works of Nostradamus. Along with predicting many major world events,
he also predicted the existence of certain antichrists. The works of this soothsayer have been analyzed
by many over the years and most experts concur that his prophetic quatrains do have meaning beyond
just simply words. In one of his quatrains in his book Les Propheties ("The Prophecies"), Nostradamus
notes:
Out of the deepest part of the west of Europe,
From poor people a young child shall be born,
Who with his tongue shall seduce many people,
His fame shall increase in the Eastern Kingdom. (Nostradamus)
It is clear to me, as it has been clear to many experts that Nostradamus is referring to Adolf Hitler. First
off, he says that this person will be from Western Europe and born into an underprivileged family, both
of which apply to Hitler as he was born in Austria and was part of a lower class family. Secondly, Hitler
became so widely known and powerful for his incredible

Analysis Of Hey Nostradamus
"I was glued to Cheryl. My arms actually made suction noises when I moved them. I was covered in
her blood."Coupland, Douglas. Hey Nostradamus! London: Harper Perennial, 2004. Print. Hey
Nostradamus is a book that was written in 2004 set in the real world, about a fictional shooting that
took place at Delbrook secondary school, and around the Vancouver area. The story is based on four
different peoples accounts in a first person point of view. With each person explaining religion, losing
loved ones, teenage love, and sex, the author is able to relate to more people since he is using
significant main ideas, and different perspectives of those main ideas. Religion was a major theme in
the book. Religion had a major impact on how the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the school shooting, Jason loses his girlfriend Cheryl, as well as a possible child. This affects Jason
in a huge way as he is not able to cope with the loss, and becomes hated by the parents of Cheryl. He
also does not get out of his antisocial stage, even after he meets another girl later on in life. Heather
also is not the best at being social, so they both use characters throughout the story. Heather holds on to
the characters after Jason goes missing. This effect Heatter, and she goes through quite an ordeal just to
keep his scent in the apartment, as well as to make it look like he is still living in the apartment. Reg
well not dead. might as well be to Jason in the first little bit of the story as he does not communicate
with him at all. Reg's family also does not communicate with Reg and when they do it usually creates
conflict. Jason's older brother Kent dies, but this does not affect him too much. His Wife Barb goes
crazy, and actually gets Jason to have sex with her in the hope to have babies that look like Kent,
Repeating the Cheryl Marriage in Las Vegas all over again. With every character in the story losing at
least one person, the ability for the reader to relate is very high. Jason losing his girlfriend could be
relatable in real life, Even if the reader did not truly lose a significant other but just broke up with them.
Losing a father is also a big one that people could relate to in the

How Did Nostradamus Predict The Future
Nostradamus was an astrologer who seemed to predict the future. He became famous after he published
his first book containing his predictions on the events that would happen in the future. One of
Nostradamus's prophecies told the harsh end of King Henry II. Even now, people are not sure how he
was able to foretell such events and still are trying to figure out how he did it. This mystery behind
Nostradamus can be summed up into two conspiracies: he did predict the future and he didn't predict
the future.
Nostradamus has bewildered experts with his prophecies for centuries and still they can't decide if he
did predict the future or not. To begin with, each of his prophecies contained four quatrains, these were,
consequently, stanzas made up of four lines which equivalently rhymes . Undoubtedly, Nostradamus ...

In other words, Nostradamus might've not presaged anything, but enabled the public to create the future
events, he wrote("The Antinous Prophecies" 1). There is more of a chance of people reading his
prophecies before they happen, and then accidentally or purposely create such an event. Though that
could be a possibility, Nostradamus's vaticinations seem to be more universal and disordered(5).
Secondly, could the vaticinations just put rhetorical significance on such events which cause individuals
somehow to tend and construct them into existence?(1). If so, could scholars determine that " many of
the historical interpretations provided by respondents reflect on our modern minds reacting to
amorphous poetry" is actually true, from what Pickover, the author of Dreaming the Future has
inferred("The Antinous Prophecies" 5). Then, Nostradamus could've been trying to be universal and
possibly wanted people to create the future, he envisioned to make his prophecies come

Cultural And Cultural Diversity In Hey Arnold
As a kid, watching television was one of my favorite things to do. It seemed as if when the TV was on,
the world stopped moving for an hour or two. There were many shows from my childhood that helped
shape me into the person I am today, but the one that stood out amongst the rest was Hey Arnold. The
hit 90's show Hey Arnold enculturated children through illustrating social acceptance, self–confidence,
and displaying resilience through hardships.
As a young child growing up in the late 90s/early 00s, Hey Arnold helped me become a more culturally
and socially accepting individual through the consistent exposure of different ethnicities and family
structures. For example, Arnold's grandparents housed two immigrants Mr. Hyunh from Vietnam and
Oskar Kokoshka from Czechoslovakia. These two men from two entirely different cultural
backgrounds were able to share a home, as well as guide Arnold through several issues he faced
growing up. Arnold showed a full capacity of love and acceptance for these men's diverse race and
backgrounds. Another example of the ethnic diversity in Hey Arnold is Arnold's friends. His best friend
Gerald, a young sporty African American boy, Phoebe a young Japanese–American girl, and his Jewish
friend Harold are prime examples of the cultural and racial diversity the show displayed. None of these
characters were treated poorly or persecuted based on race or culture. In the episode "Harold's Bar
Mitzvah", Harold is forced to abandon his friends'

Essay about The 2012 Dilemma and the Media
It hasn't been even ten years and here we are all over again. For some reason the human race can not
wait to be extinct, and we are already on track for another "Y2K" scare. Every time you turn on the
History Channel there is another new program telling us how the world as we know it will end in a little
more than two years, sending every viewer into a state of shock, and turning every Tivo into a
doomsday prediction recorder from then on out. Now, I am all about putting out as much information
about our everyday world out there for all to bear witness, but I also believe in unbiased coverage of
events. For some reason television channels, the internet, and even movies have been telling the public

The possible risks far outweigh the benefits in my eyes. 2012 also clashes with another idea, the idea of
virtue ethics. Now, these channels will cry out that they are merely educating the public about these
predictions (I use the term loosely) in order to allow "the people" to make the decision on their own. I
cry fowl play. The virtuous thing to do would to not only educate the public on the downs, but also the
ups, give both sides to the story, and make it a fair game. The History Channel is a well respected
station (I pick on them because they seem to have the most invested interest in 2012) that many people
get real factual updates, on , well history. For some reason the claim to be the "future channel" now, and
that is anything but virtuous. Unfortunately in this day and age, if any news reporter or television show
give the public any information on anything, it is automatically consumed as fact by assumption. We all
would like to believe, "why would they lie to us", well there are many, many reasons why a station
would make false claims, report false news, and over exaggerate any claim made out there. Why?
Because nobody is held responsible. It boils down to this, just like any asshole on the internet can post
a blog hiding behind a computer screen, television can in essence be used the same way. Do we really
get to talk to the people behind Fox News, History Channel, or MSNBC face to face, person to person

How Does Hockey Change Throughout The Novel
Saul's shifts in understandings, strategies and approaches to hockey relate to his evolution of his
character as they mark his state of recovery in the novel. Throughout the entirety of the novel Saul
becomes angrier no longer playing his clean game of hockey because he is using hockey as a form of

Saul. He was able to use it to get away from the grim reality of the real world. However, as the novel

Riding The Pine: Tim Bowling's personal reflection of professional hockey in "Na Na Na Na, Hey Hey
Hey Goodbye"
In "Na Na Na Na, Hey Hey Hey Goodbye," Tim Bowling, an author, poet, and a fishing boat deckhand
(Stewart et al 237), articulates how professional hockey has evolved over his lifetime. He laments how
a game he was enamoured with no longer captures his complete attention and is not as relevant in his
life as it once was. However, Bowling admits he still has a sheepish curiosity for the latest news and
highlights (238), is still "mildly attracted" (239) to the game for its grace, beauty, and skill (239), and
yearns for a Stanley Cup Final with two Canadian teams; most importantly a final with the Toronto
Maple Leafs and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Like many Canadians, Bowling can recite simple statistics about the game; six of seven Sutter brothers
played in the NHL (239) or Bobbi Clarke's battle with diabetes are a couple of examples. It is easy to
determine, from his narrative and expressions, Bowling is a fan of hockey and has been for his entire
life. Like many other fans, he realizes the game has changed and in his opinion, not for the better.
Along with his narrative, Bowling uses contrast to support his opinion in such a way that balances the
old traditions with the new nuances of the game. For example, Bowling draws on some parallels of one
of the newest superstars in the league, Sidney Crosby, to unequivocally the greatest player of the game
Wayne Gretzky: Sidney Crosby "is expected to challenge the scoring statistics of Gretzky one day"
(239). Bowling continues to use contrast comparing the years it takes to master skating with the simple
fundamentals of running, jumping, and catching (239); basic skills used in baseball, basketball and
football. His view is that hockey players are the most skilled athletes in the world and other athletes
pale in comparison. Furthermore, he adds to this contrast by stating "if you can't skate, you can't even
take to the playing surface." (239); this description compliments the demands, skill, grace and beauty of

countrymen have for their sports as well as the ugly side of the sport as well. In "Na Na Na Na, Hey
Hey, Goodbye", Bowling describes how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though their writings show similarity in the negativity that surround these sports, their essays differ for
the feelings the writers feel now. Bowling refuses to watch hockey, whereas, Zimmerman still has a
passion for the sport. For Bowling the sport has been ruined by the violence, the marketing, and the
ways it has changed from a sport to business. He says, " When I was a boy, the boards, ice, and score
clock were free of advertising; goals and assists meant more than salaries; and players and teams had
distinct character" (Bowling,215). For Bowling, he was still looking for the same sport that he watched
growing up, what he sees today, he does not recognize. According to him young boys are being
sexually abused by coaches, players are badly hurting others and people like Don Cherry are exploiting
others for a good laugh. He sees violence everywhere in the sport now, not the good, old, pure
sportsmanship he saw growing up. He also says, "Why should I follow a sport whose foundation in this
country is made of blood and beer and an empty rhetoric around outdated and destructive notions of
patriotism and manhood" (Bowling, 215). He loves the sport but cannot support what has become of it.
Zimmerman shares the love for soccer as other Africans, he says, "my heart will break too, if Ghana
fails to win the Africa Cup" (Zimmerman, 346). He wishes for the best, for both the country and the
sport. He doesn't want them to build an identity around

The Satanic Verses, Truth And Falsity
Through the violent deaths and hypocrisy, doubt in the sacred is reintroduced. Eileen Barker illustrates
brainwashing as the 'control the religious leaders have exerted over their followers'. This questions
whether belief is imposed or cultivated. John Updike writes that 'Everything seemed still in place, yet
something was immensely wrong'. Highlighting the sense of doubt in postmodernist texts, one may find
that some things, such as religion, cannot be explained. Faith can waver or hold steadfast, characters
revisiting belief in skepticism as ideology falters. In The Satanic Verses, truth and falsity is ultimately
ambiguous. Some characters are featured as wrestling with religious doubt, others like Gibreel and
Saladin think over their atheism after supernatural events. Definition is resisted, borders blurred, it is
questionable whether events are happening or merely figments of imagination. Gibreel asks for 'some
sign'(30) that God is present during his illness, but realizes he is talking to air. He 'lost his faith'(29) and
even after metamorphosis, it is revealed that Gibreel is schizophrenic. The metamorphosis may be
invented, as Rekha says to Gibreel 'maybe you are going crazy'(7), but he is seen by several others to

nor confirmed. From 'Where there is no belief, there is no blasphemy'(380), the sacred is discredited

I Was A Strange Person
I was a strange person. Most view themselves as being strange, but I was constantly pointed out as
being very, very strange. Well, firstly, I was commonly considered an anti–vegan. Well, I did eat my
greens, MOM, but still I always ended up eating the mean before the green stuff. And after. And in
between. All right, I didn't eat that much greens, but... ok, I have no excuse.
Anyhow, it started in the twenty–first of may. I was just out in the sun as usual, lying comfortably on a
patch of grassy grass grass. I like grass, sure, but id never eat the stuff. I mean, why would you ever eat
something GREEN? Man, what a strange thing to do.
As I was lying there, absorbed in the thought of how human emotion works, I noticed something in the
bright sky. Something seemed to be... falling? Well, there was a blob of smoke behind it, so it must
have been like, an aircraft just flying by. Ooooooooor, it could be a spaceship from the Andromedra

Five boys, one dream, One Direction. They all only wanted to go to try to win the xfactor, but fate had
other plans for these five boys. They went in as solo artists and came out as a band, They never had
imagined they would be where they are now. Harry Styles,Niall Horan,Liam Payne,Louis Tomlinson
and Zayn Malik were all five normal guys before the xfactor, but once they autioned their lifes changed
for forever. Harry Edward Styles, the youngest member of one direction was born in Bromsgrove,

auditioning. Harry auditioned with Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely" as his audition song and then
Oasis' "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" in a later round. Niall`s autioned with Ne–Yo`s " So Sick". Liam
auditioned with "Cry Me a River". Louis`s audition song was "Hey There Delilah" by the Plain White
T's. Lastly, Zayns audition song was sang "Let Me Love You" by Mario. Once they got to the round
before boot camp, they were let go as solo artists and were formed as a group, later named One
Direction. Week by week they made it through, eventually they got to the finale. Everyone honestly
thought they would win, but they came in third. Simon Cowell called them to his office after Christmas
and informed them that he was going to sign them to him, not knowing how successful they would turn
out to be. I can say that now these five boys are worth millions. They have went on two headlining

Downtown Massillon
On October 14 I attended a New Wave concert in Downtown Massillon. This concert was actually apart
of a larger event called the Massillon Zombie Walk which is held once a year. Most everyone dressed
as a zombie. There was even a man who dressed as a Soviet spy zombie who made my night. He
walked down the sidewalk with an accordion, a hammer and sickle pin, and a giant fur hat. Other
zombies swarmed around him as I realized that I'm pretty lucky to live in an area that treasures local
gatherings and celebrations.
The night began with a Thriller performance in front of the Massillon public library. About 20 or so
people performed the iconic dance as Michael Jackson's audio was played. The people who performed
managed to do a really good job recreating the dance moves we all know so well and they looked like
they had fun. The party moved down to the street beside the Massillon Museum where the stage was
waiting. After we arrived New Wave Nation ran onto the stage and performed Thriller again. Sadly the
lead singer of this band could not match MJ's awesome chops. It was cringe. All the high notes sounded
fuzzy and strained. The tempo seemed too slow. There was a tv screen behind them that actually played
the music video which managed to make their dancers incompetent. Weird sound effects were added to
the end of phrases and instruments were played along with the original audio.
I hoped with all my heart that they just hadn't warmed up, that it would get better but this was not

The Satanic Verses And Hey Nostradamus
While the sacred can be reengaged, The Satanic Verses and Hey Nostradamus! depict the secular as
people become isolated from belief. By exposing hypocrisy and challenging what is deemed sacred,
The Satanic Verses and Hey Nostradamus! uncover the darkness within religion, illustrating possible
impurity in religious authority and legitimacy. Peter Mullen points out that religious texts have 'a
definitive authority for the communities which accept and uphold them'. Such authority is engaged with
and questioned, allowing dissent from the imposed sacred. In The Satanic Verses, the sacred is made
up, religion and the name of God constructed to make things legitimate or important. God becomes no
more than a construction because of human greed, full of flaws and no longer idealistic. As Gibreel
makes his name by playing Ganest and Hanuman, the description 'For many of his fans, the boundary
separating the performer and his roles had longago ceased to exist'(17) provides evidence as to how
easily one may build an identity and allow legitimacy to it. Gibreel is made sacred, suddenly God's
'most celebrated incarnation'(29) though he is merely portraying religious characters in movies. He
becomes God, and as he falls ill, it is as if God himself has fallen. Undermining the sense of a fixed
divine figure, people are made sacred, ideas and texts are portrayed likewise, composed merely by
humans. While writing for Mahound the prophet, Salman is confused by 'how useful and well timed the

In the story in this instance, Jason sums up his mothers experience with Reg as "Psychologically
tortured." (Coupland, 2003, p.61)
As the story progresses, the readers see a falling out of that marriage for obvious reasons.
It wasn't just his approach to romantic relationships that he retains this "know better then thou"
mentality. In the case of the rest of his family, particularly Jason, he again, shows no remorse for his
own stubborness and unwillingness to bend the blinders that his own strict, blind faith shackled his
vision with. (Coupland, 2003)
In the incident when Jason appears with the police after the school shooting, the officer tells of the
events, Jason's apparent heroism, but the fact that Jason had killed another, despite the reasons behind
it, he states "What I understand is that my son experienced murder in his heart, and chose not to rise
above that impulse. I understand that my son is a murderer."– Quote, Reg (Coupland, 2003, p.77)

Michel De Nostradame Accomplishments
Michel de Nostradame was born in Saint–Remy–de–Provence, France on the year 1503. He became a
physician and helped plague victims in France and Italy. Nostradamus began practicing the occult and
make predictions of the future. These predictions were published in a book called The Prophecies.
People today believe his predictions are true and will come in time.
Michel de Nostradame was born in a family with nine children. His grandfather, Guy Gassonet, had to
convert to Catholicism and change the family name to Nostradame in fear of the Inquisition.
Nostradamus learned quickly in school, and he learned Latin, Greek, Hebrew, and math. When
Nostradamus became the age of 14 he entered the University of Avignon to study medicine. After being
kicked out of the school, which he was in for only a year, he researched herbal remedies and found
work as an apothecary. In 1522 he got into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Nostradamus began practicing the occult which is believed to be the basis of his prophecies. Around
1554 he wanted to write a book called Centuries which was going to be 10 volumes and 100
predictions. In 1555 he published his predictions in a book called Les Prophecies. He hid his prophecies
by putting them in rhymed four–line verses and in different languages. He did this so the church
wouldn't persecute him.
Catherine de Medici admired his work and made him counselor. He had a prophecy in which the king
would die in a jousting match. Few years later the king died from an infection because of a jousting
match. Nostradamus died from a heart failure because he had gout and arthritis. He told his secretary,
"You will not fine me alive at sunrise," and was found dead the next morning on July 2,

The Interpretation Of The Beatles : The Sweet Meaning...
Music can change a person's mood in a matter of seconds. For most people, Music is their escape from
the real word. One of the most popular bands in the world was the Beatles. They have inspired multiple
people with their music and have had numerous hits including "Penny Lane", "Love Me Do" and "I
Wanna Hold Your Hand". One particular song, "Hey Jude" was written and released in 1968; it
promptly became a number one seller on the charts for 9 weeks ("The Sweet Meaning Behind The
Beatles"). "Hey Jude" made people realize that can take any situation and turn it better just by being
positive. The song not only has numerous interpretations, but it also has numerous hidden meaning
people wouldn't notice unless they took the time ("The Sweet Meaning Behind the Beatles"). The main
meaning behind "Hey Jude" has never been released, but everyone has their own ideas of why
McCartney wrote it. One interpretation and the reasoning McCartney claims is that he wrote it for
Lennon's son, Julian, about when Lennon left his son and wife for Yoko Ono. To many kids, this could
be a traumatic experience; Julian was not an exception to this. Having a person's dad's best friend trying
to comfort them and tell them that everything is fine makes any situation a little easier. Paul had a
happy childhood until his mother died when he was fourteen; He knows how vigorous it is to grow up
without both parents and he had a mother for most of his life. John left his son and first wife when

A Short Story : The Story Of Yukino's Story
There was once a girl named Yukino ,she was a little baby around the age of 3–5 years old, she was
always jumping around while laughing and screaming. Her eyes were as brown as the fresh wet soil.
Her skin was a pale as the fluffy white clouds in the sky. Her eyes were a peculiar color ,they were a
dark crimson shade. Now at 11 years old she is in 4th grade she jumps around the classroom while it is
free time sitting next to somebody random and poking them until they say,
"Stop jeez you're so annoying", the boy says
"Oh ok sorry" she says as she sits back down at her seat
Now she knows not to annoy other people and keep boundaries and not care what other people think of
her. Don't let people bully you don't fight back but do tell and adult. Don't be afraid to speak up and if
you keep it to yourself it'll just get worst and you'll get hurt even more. Don't keep your problems to
yourself ask someone for help. She is now graduating from elementary school to middle school but first
as always even if she passes the class she always has to go to summer school. She is now in summer
school she told herself that she would change and tell no one she is into anime and sonic so she
attempted to be a shy girl but of course she that didnt work out she ended up jumping around acting
how she usually does. Then she sees this girl who has a dimpled face she runs up to her and says

Nostradamus
Biography
The following is a biography of Michel de Nostredame, it is a excerpt from Erika Cheetham, "The
Prophecies of Nostradamus". Childhood
Michel de Nostradame, more commonly known as Nostradamus, was born on 14th December 1503, in
St. Remy de Provence. His parents were of simple lineage from around Avignon. Nostradamus was the
oldest son, and had four brothers; of the first three we know little; the youngest, Jean, became
Procureur of the Parliament of the Provence. Education
Nostradamus' great intellect became apparent while he was still very young, and his education was put
into the hands of his grandfather, Jean, who taught him the rudiments of Latin, Greek, Hebrew,
Mathematics and Astrology.
When ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He had a son and a daughter by her and his life seemed complete.
Tragedies
Then a series of tragedies struck. The plague came to Agen and, despite all his efforts, killed
Nostradamus' wife and two children. The fact that he was unable to save his own family had a
disastrous effect on his practice. The he quarrelled with Scaliger and lost his friendship. His late wife's
family tried to sue him for the return of her dowry and as the final straw, in 1538, he was accused of
heresy because of a chance remark made some years before. To a workman casting a bronze statue of
the Virgin, Nostradamus had commented that he was making devils. His plea that he was only
describing the lack of aesthetic appeal inherent int the statue was ignored and the Inquisitors sent for
him to go to Toulouse.
Travelling
Nostradamus, having no wish to stand trial, set out on his wandering again and kept well clear of the
Church authorities for the next six years. We know little of this period. From references in later books
we know he travelled in the Lorraine and went to Venice and Sicily. Legends about Nostradamus'
prophetic powers also start to appear at this time.
By 1554 Nostradamus had settled in Marseilles. In November that year, the Provence experienced one
of the worst floods of its history. The plague redoubled in virulence, spread by the waters and the
polluted corpses. Nostradamus worked ceaselessly.
Once the city had recovered, Nostradamus moved on

Hey Jude
Hey Jude – Song analysis
"Hey Jude" is a song by the English rock band The Beatles and was written by Paul McCartney. It was
first released in August 1968 under The Beatles label 'Apple Records'. Hey Jude runs for 7mins and
11secs and at the time of release was the longest single to top the British charts.
The song is said to have evolved from "hey Jules", a song that had been written as a ballad to comfort
Lennon's son Julian during his parents' divorce. McCartney said,
"I started with the idea 'Hey Jules,' which was Julian, don't make it bad, take a sad song and make it
better. Hey, try and deal with this terrible thing. I knew it was not going to be easy for him. I always

This is however broken at the end of this verse as there is one bar added. Harmonically to do this the
final verse chord is turned into a V/IV allowing the chordal structure to smoothly transition from verse
to bridge.
Bridge 1:
As a result of the verse having a bar added to the end, the first phrase of both bridges have 5 bars thus
mimicking the lead in from verse to bridge making the song stable again. Harmonically the start and the
end of both bridges tonally are quite unstable. The bridge is an unusual 11 and a half measures long and
sees the introduction of a walking Bass line and drums with emphasis on tapping cymbals. Melodically
the main vocal tends to fall throughout the most part of the bridge, barely rising until the major melody
swell that leads to the next verse.
Verse 3:
Verse 3 has the addition of backing vocals in thirds. There is also the introduction of a stray backing
vocal as well. The stray vocal "so let it out and let it in" leads into the lyrical ideas found in the next
bridge. The tambourine in this verse is more frequent and played now as semi–quavers.
Bridge 2: Bridge 2 mirrors bridge 1 harmonically and musically with only slight variance in lyrics and
slightly more ornate lead vocals with more passing notes but still sticking to the diatonic Fmajor the
majority of the time..
Verse 4:
In verse 4 there is a vocal ornamentation of the initial "Hey Jude" phrase,

The Sense Of Belonging Through Human Interaction
In one of the most well–known masterpieces by Pink Floyd, "Hey You", focused on one of the most
important aspects of human life – the sense of belonging through human interaction. The lyric
highlights Roger Waters' skill as a brilliant lyricist and composer, who reaches out to his audience with
the haunting melody and emotionally–charged lyric. Waters has touched many lives with this piece by
explicitly emphasizing on the pain of desolation and disassociation. He constructs his dialogue based
on a life of his former bandmate Syd Barrett, whose life was severely affected by heavy drugs use,
social desolation, and ultimately developed into mental illness.
Waters introduces the audience to the song with the sound of an acoustic guitar in a low lying, gloomy,
yet captivating tone – painting a picture of an eerie state of mind. He then grabs their attention by using
a bold holler and plea, Waters writes:
Hey you out there in the cold,
Getting lonely getting old,
Can you feel me?"
The verse renders an image of isolation and desperation for human interaction and recognition.
Relatedness is one of the most important parts of basic human psychological needs; along with
competence and autonomy, they create a trifecta of conditions that must be met in order for human to
growth and integrate. Failure to satisfy these conditions can have negative impact on human emotion
and can ultimately demoralize and desolate us mentally (Deci, 2000). Waters then repeats the same
question at the

rest of the room was a multitudinous arrangement of various furniture; chairs, modern and antique, gifts
from friends and family, holding memories from years past and present, oak shelves full of creaking
leather bound scientific journals from aspiring botanists who'd given up on their hobby, torn books of
copious varieties, ranging from journals people had kept and sold, wanting to forget their contents, to
fairytale books with crayon pictures scribbled in margins that smelt like decades old wax, all worn from
exposure to mildew, giving off the aroma of dewy basement. Kat and Phillipa could be found pouring

the stories the books held, the information that could be learned about subjects of any kind, and about
the original owners' lives. Other assorted items were strewn about the room; a record player with a

Censorship In Alaskan Culture

  • 1. Censorship In Alaskan Culture A culture discussed in class that had interesting difference to American culture was Alaskan storytelling where the stressed importance was the relationship of the storyteller to the listener or audience. I imagined Alaskan populations spread out all over the large state, thus, my amazement that the oral tradition of storytelling were used with great significance to pass on information, emphasize morals, and describe the culture to new generations. A difference that was a surprise was that the children listening to these stories in the Alaskan culture were never allowed to interrupt the storyteller, where most children in America are more boisterous and do not have the same level of respect to always sit quietly. However, a similarity between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also these games are simple to understand for children of any age and have little requirements. Thus, every child would be able to participate and impact the stories being created. These types of games also build relationships with others in a fun way so that a child may learn to socialize. Socializing within these easy games may be especially helpful if a few children seem to keep more to themselves or are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Speech to Persuade for Travel 104 Responses to "The Four Day Work Week" 1. AVS says: July 28th, 2009 at 2:33 pm Agree with this but why stick to a 40 hour work week? Reduce it to 35 hours. 2. david says: July 28th, 2009 at 2:33 pm In the short term the staggered week does not improve building energy efficiency. In the long term it could be substantially better, because you build based on the 80% of people that are there on any given workweek, rather than for the full workforce. Smaller buildings = less energy use, in addition to the fewer resources used to put the building up in the first place. 3. Drew Miller says: July 28th, 2009 at 2:34 pm Why not just stagger the workweeks on a building–by–building basis, so you ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Particularly if that 'play' involves drugs, sex, and discussing Foucault over pork chops in a coffeehouse. As the late great president of Tanzania, real socialism doesn't involve more free time and less work. That's hipster (fake) socialism, a pale substitute for the real thing. Real socialism involves hard labor and shared sacrifice. It is a creed for tough men and tough women, not for hipster cosmopolites. 13. Hector says: July 28th, 2009 at 2:56 pm Re: As usual, the hipster's answer to everything is "More work, and less play". Sorry, correct that. Real Christians and real Socialists believe in More Work, and Less Play. Hipsters believe in Less Work, and More Play. 14. Drew says: July 28th, 2009 at 2:56 pm Before I labeled the change from a 10–hour workday to an 8–hour workday "relatively painless," I'd ask the workers effected by the change whether they found it to be "relatively painless." It may be the same number of hours per week, but the physical and mental stress of a 10–hour day may be disproportionately larger than that of an 8–hour day. In my experience, that's definitely been the case. 15. Adam says: July 28th, 2009 at 2:57 pm They serve pork chops in coffeehouses, Hector? Pork chops are practically the state meat where I'm from and I've never seen that. But your knowledge of hipster culture is far more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Story Of A Ghost Town : A Story Ghost Town The weather seems to match the old, rundown town; gloomy, dark, always raining. The people looked dull and a melancholy aura followed most everybody. There is a reason to all this sadness though, a curse. An old mage casted a spell on the town and its people centuries ago. During the day, the townsfolk were safe, but the night belonged to the mythical creatures of the world. Anyone who goes out after dark is said to turn into one of the creatures and roam the city, forever stuck in a never ending dream. Many people were going missing, most recent the parents of a girl named Eren. The town adopted her as a whole, but she stayed at an orphanage. She could be found in the old library, silently sitting, only making sound to flip a page. On a chilly October evening, she was scanning the books with her eyes, when a small red book peaked her interest. As she dragged her fingers down the spine of the book, it smelled of dust, she slowly opened it to the first page. She gasped and shut it when she heard footsteps and soft giggling. Eren sighed deeply, but a small smile crept on her lips, it was only her friends trying to scare her for the millionth time. "I know it's you guys, cut it out." The footsteps stopped and there was sume shushing, but eventually her best friend Amora came out, still clad in her school uniform. "Sorry sorry, just wanted to have a little fun, it's always so boring in here with all the books and the reading. I want you to look happier. Anyways ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. I Had Been Out Of The Hospital For Two Weeks Essay I had been out of the hospital for two weeks. I was staying on track with my medicine, with the help of my husband Bryon. I have been dealing with depression for a while now and I eventually ended up being emitted to the hospital. I decided to take time off work for a while until I got back in the swing of things. Me and my husband Bryon decided that was the best thing to do. Every day Bryon would make sure I took my medicine in the morning before he went to work and every evening when he got back. That's what my psychiatrist recommended we do. I had been suicidal, and they wanted to make sure didn't try anything to take my life. Bryon removed all of the sharp objects from the house, like knives and scissors. I didn't feel like all of that was necessary, but I could see why he did that with the state of mind I was in before I was emitted to the hospital. Battling with severe depression took a toll on me. There was no definite cause for my depression either. It's like no matter how good things were going in my life, there would always be a little bit of sadness that lingered. I was feeling confident that I was going to really get better and more stable. It is just so hard sometimes to find the medicine that worked. It is like trial and error. My medicine would have to be adjusted to get me feeling the best I could, but I was hoping that this was a real fix. I mean I knew that I would not always be happy because in life we all go through ups and downs, but I just wanted to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Drone Age Is Coming Per Galeotti Executive Summary The drone age is coming per Galeotti . It has been estimated that annual spending on drones around the world will almost double to $11.4 billion by 2022. New technology has been driven by the military, and drones are critical to military operations. Due to changing times, drone use is rapidly adjusting to commercial use by civilians. This drone revolution has massive implications, ranging from legal and moral to economic and geopolitical. It will be a deeply disruptive technology, able on the one hand to provide undreamt–of capacities to impoverished people and countries, and on the other to widen the gap between haves and have–nots. It may prove a creative, empowering experience, but also has the potential to be destructive, destabilizing and divisive. Drone one day will fight our wars and be a huge asset on the battlefield as well as controlling hostile or volatile situations. Currently, drone technology is being driven by military applications, and this will continue as they become increasingly varied in their roles. Drones will do our work. Drones will carry out tasks humans cannot, or do not want to do themselves. From remotely piloted ambulances to leading SWAT raids in hostile situations, from collecting garbage to moving goods, they become ubiquitous, even making their way into the media, gathering news footage and becoming entertainment tools. Their ability to linger for long periods of time allows this real–time intelligence to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Personal Narrative I crept back into the Lynch 's, Ross trailing close behind me. "You know we don 't have to sneak in to my own house," he whispered loudly. I shushed him, squeaking the front door closed. This was the tricky part, stealthily getting past the rest of the family to the guest bedroom. Ross 's bare feet fumbled carelessly as if he not learned to walk quietly, and instead relied on the hushed muffle of my steps. I imagined I was in the FBI, Ross being my loud side kick. My brain tuned out sounds around me as I played my own spy theme music. Ba na na na na na duh nuhh. My mind was interrupted by soft words. I listened intently to the jabbing voices heard nearby, perhaps in the kitchen or living room. It was difficult for me to dodge each noise ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Good morning sunshine," Riker teased Ross, his voice hitched as his eyes met mine. I hadn 't thought about him since the night before, images of him dancing and laughing with that girl. My stomach pounded into a heavy knot. Why wasn 't this easy? Why couldn 't I just be with one of them and be totally and utterly happy? I scanned the sun lit room, Serenity wasn 't there, she must had gone home last night like I should have. "Why can 't my girlfriend sleepover but Riker 's can?" Rocky whined. Ross 's fist balled slightly, in close proximity to mine. "My girlfriend did," Ellington stuck his tongue out through his smile. "She needed one more day away from that place, give her a break. Right?" He patted the open seat next to him, welcoming me to come closer. For some odd reason I obeyed his every move. His plate was clean, food residue lightly painted the usual white. My stomach growled angrily with rage but I was distracted as Riker 's consuming eyes sunk into mine. His head and voice lowered to mine, "Can we talk?" Before I could answer his chair huffed against the floor, his hand placed in front of my nose to help me up. I decided not to take it, I knew Ross was watching. Riker and I filed in at the step of the long, descending stairs. "I wanna show you something." He spoke powerfully, unlike before. "Riker, I–" Before I could continue he raced up ... • 29. Hope In Escape From Camp 14 Hope enables us to endure through even the most miserable situations. The reason why hope is such a powerful force because it is not just a "wish" that everything that will be alright, Hope is a belief that the problems will eventually subside if it is endured for long enough. Just the belief that a person still have something to live for in the face of utter defeat, is enough for people to keep going. An example of this happening is during Nazi–era concentration camp in Bergen Belsen, where the tragic Anne Frank died only one month before rescue. " Women who knew Anne Frank in the Bergen Belsen camp said that neither hunger nor typhus killed the young girl... she lost the will to live after the death of her sister Margot." (Harden 105) Hope ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the context of the book Escape from Camp 14, It is a fact that currently North Korea is the only true totalitarian dictatorship to exist in the modern world. If all other socialist government forms have failed apart from North Korea, there must be something they have done differently to keep the flow of power the same since its existence. North Korea's government has managed to keep such a tight hold on the oppression of their people, that they can effectively silence them through an efficient system of keeping their citizens ignorant on what is happening outside their lives. Shin was required to learn the ten rules of camp 14 since childhood, and until his encounter with Park, he has known nothing other than what the guards tell him. As Shin has recited himself "To fulfill one's work quota is to wash away sins, as well as to recompence the state for the forgiveness it has shown" (Harden 195) The camp is effectively crushing the hope of the prisoners by limiting their knowledge to only what the state wants them to know, so there cannot be any rebellion if the prisoners' hopes are all crushed by the North Korean government. Since the government has successfully "bred" the rebellious nature of their prisoners out of them since childhood, the prisoners believe that everything the guards say must be the truth, including one of the main sources of hope like standing up to what others believe in. Another example of hope being closely correlated to sticking up to beliefs that are right within the book Hey Nostradamus! Happens directly after the events in the school shooting. Officers have brought Jason back home to his parents, and told them that Jason saved a lot of people today because he managed to kill one of the gunmen with a rock. Even though his actions ... • 33. Essay on Our Decisions and a Predetermined Fate: Oedipus... Since the dawn of time prophecies have supposedly been passed down directly from the gods unto the prophets. In the ancient Grecian time, god's word was worshipped and fate was all but fact. In the bible, Moses was one of the most famous prophets. In the 1500s, Nostradamus, who was a French apothecary and seer, wrote an entire collection of prophecies. Throughout history there have been theses men and many more who claimed to know details about the future. Why would so many prophecies become world renowned if there were no truths to them? More importantly, does fate even exist? I believe that people have the will to make their own choices and make decisions throughout their daily life however no matter what choices we make the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Sophocles) The shepherd gives Oedipus the affirmation that what he refused to believe is indeed true. He accepts that fate has caught up with him after all and lead his life into the foreseen ruins. Even though Oedipus has tried his whole life to escape the prophecy that he had been foretold, he still faces the same end that had been prophesized of him not only by the oracle of Delphi but by Teiresias as well. One example of modern day prophecies are the works of Nostradamus. Along with predicting many major world events, he also predicted the existence of certain antichrists. The works of this soothsayer have been analyzed by many over the years and most experts concur that his prophetic quatrains do have meaning beyond just simply words. In one of his quatrains in his book Les Propheties ("The Prophecies"), Nostradamus notes: Out of the deepest part of the west of Europe, From poor people a young child shall be born, Who with his tongue shall seduce many people, His fame shall increase in the Eastern Kingdom. (Nostradamus) It is clear to me, as it has been clear to many experts that Nostradamus is referring to Adolf Hitler. First off, he says that this person will be from Western Europe and born into an underprivileged family, both of which apply to Hitler as he was born in Austria and was part of a lower class family. London: Harper Perennial, 2004. Print. Hey Nostradamus is a book that was written in 2004 set in the real world, about a fictional shooting that took place at Delbrook secondary school, and around the Vancouver area. The story is based on four different peoples accounts in a first person point of view. With each person explaining religion, losing loved ones, teenage love, and sex, the author is able to relate to more people since he is using significant main ideas, and different perspectives of those main ideas. Religion was a major theme in the book. Religion had a major impact on how the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 41. How Did Nostradamus Predict The Future Nostradamus was an astrologer who seemed to predict the future. He became famous after he published his first book containing his predictions on the events that would happen in the future. One of Nostradamus's prophecies told the harsh end of King Henry II. Even now, people are not sure how he was able to foretell such events and still are trying to figure out how he did it. This mystery behind Nostradamus can be summed up into two conspiracies: he did predict the future and he didn't predict the future. Nostradamus has bewildered experts with his prophecies for centuries and still they can't decide if he did predict the future or not. To begin with, each of his prophecies contained four quatrains, these were, consequently, stanzas made up of four lines which equivalently rhymes . Undoubtedly, Nostradamus ... There is more of a chance of people reading his prophecies before they happen, and then accidentally or purposely create such an event. Though that could be a possibility, Nostradamus's vaticinations seem to be more universal and disordered(5). Secondly, could the vaticinations just put rhetorical significance on such events which cause individuals somehow to tend and construct them into existence?(1). If so, could scholars determine that " many of the historical interpretations provided by respondents reflect on our modern minds reacting to amorphous poetry" is actually true, from what Pickover, the author of Dreaming the Future has inferred("The Antinous Prophecies" 5). The house was silent, the lingering smell of fresh coffee beans and scrambled eggs. Walking across the smooth, pine, hardwood floors and up the cream colored, just–steamed carpets brought back memories, but Phillipa wouldn't allow herself to reminisce now. Kat had called her here for a reason, though she'd sounded unbelievably distant due to her raging fever, and Phillipa had to fulfill her duty as a best friend; they take care of each other when they're at their best, and their worst. Underneath the recently acquired hangings was the old wall, painted, repainted, and still unfinished; a great unrestrained mish mash of colors that represented Kat's mood. Phillipa was proud to see the many still–odorous, bright streaks of sunsets, and less oceanic, moody splotches. There had been so many of the depressed hues casting unhealthy opalescent reflections onto Kat's pale, unhealthy skin last year. The rest of the room was a multitudinous arrangement of various furniture; chairs, modern and antique, gifts from friends and family, holding memories from years past and present, oak shelves full of creaking leather bound scientific journals from aspiring botanists who'd given up on their hobby, torn books of copious varieties, ranging from journals people had kept and sold, wanting to forget their contents, to fairytale books with crayon pictures scribbled in margins that smelt like decades old wax, all worn from exposure to mildew, giving off the aroma of dewy basement. • 49. Cultural And Cultural Diversity In Hey Arnold As a kid, watching television was one of my favorite things to do. It seemed as if when the TV was on, the world stopped moving for an hour or two. There were many shows from my childhood that helped shape me into the person I am today, but the one that stood out amongst the rest was Hey Arnold. The hit 90's show Hey Arnold enculturated children through illustrating social acceptance, self–confidence, and displaying resilience through hardships. As a young child growing up in the late 90s/early 00s, Hey Arnold helped me become a more culturally and socially accepting individual through the consistent exposure of different ethnicities and family structures. For example, Arnold's grandparents housed two immigrants Mr. Hyunh from Vietnam and Oskar Kokoshka from Czechoslovakia. These two men from two entirely different cultural backgrounds were able to share a home, as well as guide Arnold through several issues he faced growing up. Arnold showed a full capacity of love and acceptance for these men's diverse race and backgrounds. Another example of the ethnic diversity in Hey Arnold is Arnold's friends. His best friend Gerald, a young sporty African American boy, Phoebe a young Japanese–American girl, and his Jewish friend Harold are prime examples of the cultural and racial diversity the show displayed. None of these characters were treated poorly or persecuted based on race or culture. In the episode "Harold's Bar Mitzvah", Harold is forced to abandon his friends' ... For some reason the human race can not wait to be extinct, and we are already on track for another "Y2K" scare. Every time you turn on the History Channel there is another new program telling us how the world as we know it will end in a little more than two years, sending every viewer into a state of shock, and turning every Tivo into a doomsday prediction recorder from then on out. Now, I am all about putting out as much information about our everyday world out there for all to bear witness, but I also believe in unbiased coverage of events. The possible risks far outweigh the benefits in my eyes. 2012 also clashes with another idea, the idea of virtue ethics. Now, these channels will cry out that they are merely educating the public about these predictions (I use the term loosely) in order to allow "the people" to make the decision on their own. I cry fowl play. The virtuous thing to do would to not only educate the public on the downs, but also the ups, give both sides to the story, and make it a fair game. The History Channel is a well respected station (I pick on them because they seem to have the most invested interest in 2012) that many people get real factual updates, on , well history. For some reason the claim to be the "future channel" now, and that is anything but virtuous. Unfortunately in this day and age, if any news reporter or television show give the public any information on anything, it is automatically consumed as fact by assumption. We all would like to believe, "why would they lie to us", well there are many, many reasons why a station would make false claims, report false news, and over exaggerate any claim made out there. Why? Because nobody is held responsible. It boils down to this, just like any asshole on the internet can post a blog hiding behind a computer screen, television can in essence be used the same way. Throughout the entirety of the novel Saul becomes angrier no longer playing his clean game of hockey because he is using hockey as a form of release for his treatment at the residential school. At the start of the novel hockey was an escape for Saul. He was able to use it to get away from the grim reality of the real world. Nananna Riding The Pine: Tim Bowling's personal reflection of professional hockey in "Na Na Na Na, Hey Hey Hey Goodbye" In "Na Na Na Na, Hey Hey Hey Goodbye," Tim Bowling, an author, poet, and a fishing boat deckhand (Stewart et al 237), articulates how professional hockey has evolved over his lifetime. He laments how a game he was enamoured with no longer captures his complete attention and is not as relevant in his life as it once was. However, Bowling admits he still has a sheepish curiosity for the latest news and highlights (238), is still "mildly attracted" (239) to the game for its grace, beauty, and skill (239), and yearns for a Stanley Cup Final with two Canadian teams; most importantly a final with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Like many Canadians, Bowling can recite simple statistics about the game; six of seven Sutter brothers played in the NHL (239) or Bobbi Clarke's battle with diabetes are a couple of examples. It is easy to determine, from his narrative and expressions, Bowling is a fan of hockey and has been for his entire life. Like many other fans, he realizes the game has changed and in his opinion, not for the better. Along with his narrative, Bowling uses contrast to support his opinion in such a way that balances the old traditions with the new nuances of the game. For example, Bowling draws on some parallels of one of the newest superstars in the league, Sidney Crosby, to unequivocally the greatest player of the game Wayne Gretzky: Sidney Crosby "is expected to challenge the scoring statistics of Gretzky one day" (239). Bowling continues to use contrast comparing the years it takes to master skating with the simple fundamentals of running, jumping, and catching (239); basic skills used in baseball, basketball and football. His view is that hockey players are the most skilled athletes in the world and other athletes pale in comparison. Furthermore, he adds to this contrast by stating "if you can't skate, you can't even take to the playing surface." He talks about the unity of Africans and how much soccer is a part of their lives. He also describes the underlying reason of why soccer is so heavily pushed. The perspective in the essay "Na Na Na Na, Hey Hey, Goodbye" Tim Bowling discusses his passion for hockey and his hate for the violence. Both show the passion countrymen have for their sports as well as the ugly side of the sport as well. In "Na Na Na Na, Hey Hey, Goodbye", Bowling describes how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Though their writings show similarity in the negativity that surround these sports, their essays differ for the feelings the writers feel now. Bowling refuses to watch hockey, whereas, Zimmerman still has a passion for the sport. For Bowling the sport has been ruined by the violence, the marketing, and the ways it has changed from a sport to business. He says, " When I was a boy, the boards, ice, and score clock were free of advertising; goals and assists meant more than salaries; and players and teams had distinct character" (Bowling,215). For Bowling, he was still looking for the same sport that he watched growing up, what he sees today, he does not recognize. According to him young boys are being sexually abused by coaches, players are badly hurting others and people like Don Cherry are exploiting others for a good laugh. He sees violence everywhere in the sport now, not the good, old, pure sportsmanship he saw growing up. He also says, "Why should I follow a sport whose foundation in this country is made of blood and beer and an empty rhetoric around outdated and destructive notions of patriotism and manhood" (Bowling, 215). He loves the sport but cannot support what has become of it. Zimmerman shares the love for soccer as other Africans, he says, "my heart will break too, if Ghana fails to win the Africa Cup" (Zimmerman, 346). Eileen Barker illustrates brainwashing as the 'control the religious leaders have exerted over their followers'. This questions whether belief is imposed or cultivated. John Updike writes that 'Everything seemed still in place, yet something was immensely wrong'. Highlighting the sense of doubt in postmodernist texts, one may find that some things, such as religion, cannot be explained. Faith can waver or hold steadfast, characters revisiting belief in skepticism as ideology falters. In The Satanic Verses, truth and falsity is ultimately ambiguous. Some characters are featured as wrestling with religious doubt, others like Gibreel and Saladin think over their atheism after supernatural events. Definition is resisted, borders blurred, it is questionable whether events are happening or merely figments of imagination. Gibreel asks for 'some sign'(30) that God is present during his illness, but realizes he is talking to air. This concert was actually apart of a larger event called the Massillon Zombie Walk which is held once a year. Most everyone dressed as a zombie. There was even a man who dressed as a Soviet spy zombie who made my night. He walked down the sidewalk with an accordion, a hammer and sickle pin, and a giant fur hat. Other zombies swarmed around him as I realized that I'm pretty lucky to live in an area that treasures local gatherings and celebrations. The night began with a Thriller performance in front of the Massillon public library. About 20 or so people performed the iconic dance as Michael Jackson's audio was played. The people who performed managed to do a really good job recreating the dance moves we all know so well and they looked like they had fun. The party moved down to the street beside the Massillon Museum where the stage was waiting. After we arrived New Wave Nation ran onto the stage and performed Thriller again. Sadly the lead singer of this band could not match MJ's awesome chops. It was cringe. All the high notes sounded fuzzy and strained. The tempo seemed too slow. • 90. The Satanic Verses And Hey Nostradamus While the sacred can be reengaged, The Satanic Verses and Hey Nostradamus! depict the secular as people become isolated from belief. By exposing hypocrisy and challenging what is deemed sacred, The Satanic Verses and Hey Nostradamus! uncover the darkness within religion, illustrating possible impurity in religious authority and legitimacy. Peter Mullen points out that religious texts have 'a definitive authority for the communities which accept and uphold them'. Such authority is engaged with and questioned, allowing dissent from the imposed sacred. In The Satanic Verses, the sacred is made up, religion and the name of God constructed to make things legitimate or important. God becomes no more than a construction because of human greed, full of flaws and no longer idealistic. As Gibreel makes his name by playing Ganest and Hanuman, the description 'For many of his fans, the boundary separating the performer and his roles had longago ceased to exist'(17) provides evidence as to how easily one may build an identity and allow legitimacy to it. Gibreel is made sacred, suddenly God's 'most celebrated incarnation'(29) though he is merely portraying religious characters in movies. He becomes God, and as he falls ill, it is as if God himself has fallen. Undermining the sense of a fixed divine figure, people are made sacred, ideas and texts are portrayed likewise, composed merely by humans. • 111. Michel De Nostradame Accomplishments Michel de Nostradame was born in Saint–Remy–de–Provence, France on the year 1503. He became a physician and helped plague victims in France and Italy. Nostradamus began practicing the occult and make predictions of the future. These predictions were published in a book called The Prophecies. People today believe his predictions are true and will come in time. Michel de Nostradame was born in a family with nine children. His grandfather, Guy Gassonet, had to convert to Catholicism and change the family name to Nostradame in fear of the Inquisition. Nostradamus learned quickly in school, and he learned Latin, Greek, Hebrew, and math. When Nostradamus became the age of 14 he entered the University of Avignon to study medicine. After being kicked out of the school, which he was in for only a year, he researched herbal remedies and found work as an apothecary. In 1522 he got into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The rose pill cured his patients but keeping them clean, giving them low–fat diets, and providing fresh air also helped. Citizens began to support him financially because of his treatments. Nostradamus began practicing the occult which is believed to be the basis of his prophecies. Around 1554 he wanted to write a book called Centuries which was going to be 10 volumes and 100 predictions. In 1555 he published his predictions in a book called Les Prophecies. He hid his prophecies by putting them in rhymed four–line verses and in different languages. He did this so the church wouldn't persecute him. Catherine de Medici admired his work and made him counselor. He had a prophecy in which the king would die in a jousting match. Few years later the king died from an infection because of a jousting match. Nostradamus died from a heart failure because he had gout and arthritis. He told his secretary, "You will not fine me alive at sunrise," and was found dead the next morning on July 2, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 115. The Interpretation Of The Beatles : The Sweet Meaning... Music can change a person's mood in a matter of seconds. For most people, Music is their escape from the real word. One of the most popular bands in the world was the Beatles. They have inspired multiple people with their music and have had numerous hits including "Penny Lane", "Love Me Do" and "I Wanna Hold Your Hand". One particular song, "Hey Jude" was written and released in 1968; it promptly became a number one seller on the charts for 9 weeks ("The Sweet Meaning Behind The Beatles"). "Hey Jude" made people realize that can take any situation and turn it better just by being positive. The song not only has numerous interpretations, but it also has numerous hidden meaning people wouldn't notice unless they took the time ("The Sweet Meaning Behind the Beatles"). The main meaning behind "Hey Jude" has never been released, but everyone has their own ideas of why McCartney wrote it. One interpretation and the reasoning McCartney claims is that he wrote it for Lennon's son, Julian, about when Lennon left his son and wife for Yoko Ono. To many kids, this could be a traumatic experience; Julian was not an exception to this. Having a person's dad's best friend trying to comfort them and tell them that everything is fine makes any situation a little easier. Paul had a happy childhood until his mother died when he was fourteen; He knows how vigorous it is to grow up without both parents and he had a mother for most of his life. John left his son and first wife when Julian was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 119. A Short Story : The Story Of Yukino's Story There was once a girl named Yukino ,she was a little baby around the age of 3–5 years old, she was always jumping around while laughing and screaming. Her eyes were as brown as the fresh wet soil. Her skin was a pale as the fluffy white clouds in the sky. Her eyes were a peculiar color ,they were a dark crimson shade. Now at 11 years old she is in 4th grade she jumps around the classroom while it is free time sitting next to somebody random and poking them until they say, "Stop jeez you're so annoying", the boy says "Oh ok sorry" she says as she sits back down at her seat Now she knows not to annoy other people and keep boundaries and not care what other people think of her. Don't let people bully you don't fight back but do tell and adult. Don't be afraid to speak up and if you keep it to yourself it'll just get worst and you'll get hurt even more. Don't keep your problems to yourself ask someone for help. She is now graduating from elementary school to middle school but first as always even if she passes the class she always has to go to summer school. • 123. Nostradamus Essay examples Nostradamus Biography The following is a biography of Michel de Nostredame, it is a excerpt from Erika Cheetham, "The Prophecies of Nostradamus". Childhood Michel de Nostradame, more commonly known as Nostradamus, was born on 14th December 1503, in St. Remy de Provence. His parents were of simple lineage from around Avignon. Nostradamus was the oldest son, and had four brothers; of the first three we know little; the youngest, Jean, became Procureur of the Parliament of the Provence. Education Nostradamus' great intellect became apparent while he was still very young, and his education was put into the hands of his grandfather, Jean, who taught him the rudiments of Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Mathematics and Astrology. When ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He had a son and a daughter by her and his life seemed complete. Tragedies Then a series of tragedies struck. The plague came to Agen and, despite all his efforts, killed Nostradamus' wife and two children. The fact that he was unable to save his own family had a disastrous effect on his practice. The he quarrelled with Scaliger and lost his friendship. His late wife's family tried to sue him for the return of her dowry and as the final straw, in 1538, he was accused of heresy because of a chance remark made some years before. To a workman casting a bronze statue of the Virgin, Nostradamus had commented that he was making devils. His plea that he was only describing the lack of aesthetic appeal inherent int the statue was ignored and the Inquisitors sent for him to go to Toulouse. Travelling Nostradamus, having no wish to stand trial, set out on his wandering again and kept well clear of the Church authorities for the next six years. We know little of this period. From references in later books we know he travelled in the Lorraine and went to Venice and Sicily. Legends about Nostradamus' prophetic powers also start to appear at this time. By 1554 Nostradamus had settled in Marseilles. In November that year, the Provence experienced one of the worst floods of its history. The plague redoubled in virulence, spread by the waters and the polluted corpses. Nostradamus worked ceaselessly. Once the city had recovered, Nostradamus moved on

  • 128. Hey Jude Hey Jude – Song analysis "Hey Jude" is a song by the English rock band The Beatles and was written by Paul McCartney. It was first released in August 1968 under The Beatles label 'Apple Records'. Hey Jude runs for 7mins and 11secs and at the time of release was the longest single to top the British charts. The song is said to have evolved from "hey Jules", a song that had been written as a ballad to comfort Lennon's son Julian during his parents' divorce. McCartney said, "I started with the idea 'Hey Jules,' which was Julian, don't make it bad, take a sad song and make it better. Hey, try and deal with this terrible thing. I knew it was not going to be easy for him. I always feel sorry for kids in divorces ... I had the idea [for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is however broken at the end of this verse as there is one bar added. Harmonically to do this the final verse chord is turned into a V/IV allowing the chordal structure to smoothly transition from verse to bridge. Bridge 1: As a result of the verse having a bar added to the end, the first phrase of both bridges have 5 bars thus mimicking the lead in from verse to bridge making the song stable again. Harmonically the start and the end of both bridges tonally are quite unstable. The bridge is an unusual 11 and a half measures long and sees the introduction of a walking Bass line and drums with emphasis on tapping cymbals. Melodically the main vocal tends to fall throughout the most part of the bridge, barely rising until the major melody swell that leads to the next verse. Verse 3: Verse 3 has the addition of backing vocals in thirds. There is also the introduction of a stray backing vocal as well. The stray vocal "so let it out and let it in" leads into the lyrical ideas found in the next bridge. The tambourine in this verse is more frequent and played now as semi–quavers. Bridge 2: Bridge 2 mirrors bridge 1 harmonically and musically with only slight variance in lyrics and slightly more ornate lead vocals with more passing notes but still sticking to the diatonic Fmajor the majority of the time.. Verse 4: In verse 4 there is a vocal ornamentation of the initial "Hey Jude" phrase,

  • 133. The Sense Of Belonging Through Human Interaction In one of the most well–known masterpieces by Pink Floyd, "Hey You", focused on one of the most important aspects of human life – the sense of belonging through human interaction. The lyric highlights Roger Waters' skill as a brilliant lyricist and composer, who reaches out to his audience with the haunting melody and emotionally–charged lyric. Waters has touched many lives with this piece by explicitly emphasizing on the pain of desolation and disassociation. He constructs his dialogue based on a life of his former bandmate Syd Barrett, whose life was severely affected by heavy drugs use, social desolation, and ultimately developed into mental illness. Waters introduces the audience to the song with the sound of an acoustic guitar in a low lying, gloomy, yet captivating tone – painting a picture of an eerie state of mind. He then grabs their attention by using a bold holler and plea, Waters writes: Hey you out there in the cold, Getting lonely getting old, Can you feel me?" The verse renders an image of isolation and desperation for human interaction and recognition. Relatedness is one of the most important parts of basic human psychological needs; along with competence and autonomy, they create a trifecta of conditions that must be met in order for human to growth and integrate. Failure to satisfy these conditions can have negative impact on human emotion and can ultimately demoralize and desolate us mentally (Deci, 2000). Waters then repeats the same question at the ... • 137. Kat : A Best Friend Walking across the smooth, pine, hardwood floors and up the cream colored, just–steamed carpets brought back memories, but Phillipa wouldn't allow herself to reminisce now. Kat had called her here for a reason, though she sounded unbelievably distant due to her raging fever, and Phillipa had to fulfill her duty as a best friend; they take care of each other when they're at their best, and their worst. Kat was currently at her worst, and home alone. Moreover, because Kat was too ill to care for herself, Phillipa would have to take over for Kat's extremely inattentive parents, as was the norm in their friendship. Kat's parents worked in the city; her father, an engineer for a big manufacturing company, and her mother; an art director. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Underneath the recently acquired hangings was the old wall, painted, repainted, and still unfinished; a great unrestrained mishmash of colors that represented Kat's mood. Kat and Phillipa could be found pouring over the books for hours, having sleepovers at each other 's' houses just to finish them. They both loved the stories the books held, the information that could be learned about subjects of any kind, and about the original owners' lives. Other assorted items were strewn about the room; a record player with a large collection of records dating as far back as the 1920s and up to the 21st century and slightly warped records like Saturday Night Fever and Billie Holiday stacked underneath ...
