Introduced Animals Of Australia
The Red Fox
Bianca Wyatt
Introduction
Red foxes were introduced in Australia by settlers in the 1830s. The Red Foxes spread quickly
throughout Australia to become a very damaging species to the environment. European settlers
introduced red foxes so they could use them in fox hunting because they had nothing to hunt. The
red fox is one of the largest of the fox species in the world.
Red foxes are part of the "Canidae" family and are related to dogs, jackals, coyotes and wolves.
There is over 20 foxes In the world but the only fox found in Australia was the Red Fox.

How did it get here? What were the benefits of introducing it? Is it suited to the Australian
environment? Why? Why not?
The Red Fox was first introduced to Australia in around 1871. A small number were shipped from
England for the purposes of sport hunting, and released into the wild in southern Victoria around
Geelong, and also in South Australia.
The Red Foxes were brought to Australia for the sport of fox hunting. Fox hunting is where hunters
chase and kill wild foxes using special dogs trained for sport. Hunters dressed in their uniforms let
their specially trained foxhounds off the leash to sniff out foxes hiding in bushes. The hounds chase
the frightened foxes as they run away from the hounds. The hunters chase the hounds until the fox
escaped or was killed.
At the time, no one knew what a major problem the Red Foxes would become for Australian farmers
and the extent of the damage they would cause to our environment. By 1893 foxes were so
damaging that they were considered pests.
2. People tried to prevent the spread of the foxes in many areas but they could not be stopped. Within
100 years, this introduced pest species spread across most of Australia, and now live in three
quarters of

6. Environmental Education At David Fleay 's Wildlife Park Essay
Today was the first day of our applied theatre project for environmental education at David Fleay's
Wildlife Park. We started the day by getting into costumes and roaming around the park. Originally
this was done in pairs, but seeing the amount of people that actually came to the park we decided
that going as a group of all four of us would be the most beneficial, as we didn't want to see the
same people twice. As it was our first day we were all a bit nervous, but Afri and Georgia's
engagement with the children at the park was successful, they were taught the "secret call" of
"Coowee!" and they enjoyed the animals being there. Next time, the animals could engage more and
be more present in this activity. Next was the performance. The performance went exceptionally
well, and the audience of around fifteen children (and their parents) were engaged and participating
the entire time. Though, due to this the performance ran longer than expected and we were unable to
do the "eco Hero Pledge". We also underestimated the amount of people that would be there, and it
was hard for one person to hand out all the Eco Hero badges, and so next time I will be assisting
Lydia with handing those out. The workshop also went really well, we had lots of the participants
come in and create Bilby ears with us and it was a lot of fun. As a facilitator I felt my own personal
interaction with the participants, and asking about the show was lacking. Although this didn't change

14. How The Bilby Influences Its Environment?
As a nocturnal forager the bilby takes refuge in burrows during the day to escape high daytime
temperatures (Robinson & Morrison). The bilby has been found to be highly intolerant to heat and
becomes dangerously heat stressed at temperatures over 30°C (Robinson & Morrison 1957;
Morrison 1962). This could potentially signal an issue for the bilby with climate change as while
most of us have noticed an increase in daytime temperatures, there has actually been a larger
increase in night–time temperatures and the bilby's current range is likely to experience some of the
largest temperature increases in Australia (Hughes 2003).
While the impacts of climate change on bilbies are not well understood, what is well documented is

A deep snow cover helps to insulate the hibernaculum from the much colder air temperatures
When the air temperature reaches –7°C the hibernaculum stays a perfect 2°C
Preferred boulder fields have around 120 days of snow cover while fields with less than 100 days of
snow cover are not used

Boulder fields with a southerly aspect are best for mountain pygmy possum hibernation
These fields maintain a thicker and longer snow cover as well as better hibernaculum temperatures

National Cheeseburger Day
The burger...it's the ultimate classic American comfort food. We, at Isle of Capri Lula, love a good
burger. Burgers are great because they're in expensive, filling and taste amazing. It's no wonder that
there's a whole entire day dedicated to the burger. September 18 is National Cheeseburger Day. Read
on to learn some fun facts all about the burger!
Ancient History
The burger has quite a long legacy. The burger can be traced back thousands of years to ancient
Egyptian times. The Egyptians would ground their meat and shape them in the form of patties. But
here are some additional ways that people have enjoyed hamburgers throughout history around the
world.

It really comes down to whether or not you think a true burger is one that is served on a bun, or with
two pieces of bread.
Charlie Nagreen: In 1885, Charlie sold hamburgers from an ox–drawn food stand at the Outagamie
County Fair in Seymour, Wisconsin. He initially sold meatballs, but wasn't very successful. He
quickly realizes that meatballs were too inconvenient, so he decided to flatten them and place them
in between two pieces of bread, so that they would be easier for the fair patrons to eat. Many came
to know him as Hamburger Charlie. He would return to sell them at the fair every year, until his
death in 1950.
Oscar Weber Bilby Family: To date, this is the first known hamburger that was served on a bun.
While the family admits that hamburgers were already served on bread, prior to grandpa Oscar
adding the bun, they still maintain that grandpa Oscar was the true originator of the hamburger.
Grandpa Oscar began serving grilled meat on buns in 1891. He would give them out every fourth of
July, and sometimes as many as 125 people would show up to taste his infamous burgers.

A tribute to my beloved hens "Eliza, Barbara and Doris" by backyard pets, consumed by a fox. The
Red Fox was first introduced into Australia as early as 1845 as documented by The Australian

They also prey on lambs, sheep and other livestock in rural and farming areas, costing the farmers

few natural or no natural enemies in Australia and few serious diseases. International studies suggest
that foxes can survive in most environments except for tropical climates which is why it does not
occupy parts of Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia. Foxes.
In 1845 (as documented by The Australian Government. Department of Sustainability, Environment,

foxes to Tasmania they did not consider that these mammals would survive and thrive, nor did they
consider that along with other feral animals, they could have the potential to spread diseases such as
rabies. If foxes were to carry such a disease there could be devastating consequences to the human
population if bitten or attacked by a fox.
Foxes have become over populated and a pest in Australia. There are many different ways of
controlling foxes in Australia such as 'Den Destruction'. The idea is to destroy the nesting place of
the fox. However, den destruction does not work as well for foxes as it does for rabbits as foxes can

The problem begins back in early childhood. Children are so innocently blind that they do not
realize that occupational sex segregation appears in their every day life. An example of this is shown
in Nemerowicz's book, Children's Perception of Gender and Work Roles. Nemerowicz asked fourth
grade children to draw a man at work and a woman at work. Eighty–six percent of the pictures
showed men in jobs associated with power and labour of some kind (Mackie, 1990). Men were
drawn as construction workers, policemen, firemen, doctors and businessmen. On the other hand,
women were shown as housekeepers, nurses, cashiers and secretaries. Using Nemerowicz's results it
is safe to say that children had to have learned occupational sex segregation somewhere. Was it their
parents, their teachers or their toys that had this stereotypical affect on them? Since early sex
segregation like this occurs, differences between men and women in a child's future work
environment are imminent.
From early childhood, children are taught traits that are conceptualized as typically male and female

Methods for counselling the victims of Spousal Abuse
Spousal abuse is a problem which exists in many societies around the world. Violence that occurs in
any relationship which is romantic in nature and in which one partner seeks to dominate the other
partner is called the spousal abuse. This type of abuse occurs in husband–wife relationship,
relationship between the partners who are dating each other, with common law spouses and same
sex relationships. There are certain ways in which one can be a victim of this abuse like emotionally,
financially, verbally, sexually, psychologically or physically. Both men and women can be the
victims of this abuse. But it can be said that 90% ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But there are treatments which can help to get out of it. I would like to mention two most common
approaches like family therapy and personal counselling to counsel the victims. Family therapy is
given only when the victim of spousal abuse is in contact with every member of the family. This
therapy guides the family members to be in touch with each other and tries to help the suffered
victim, to get out from the situation by having new habits and by new ways of relating. Personal
counselling is also called individual counselling. Individual counselling is a one to one discussion
between the counsellor and the client, who is the person seeking treatment. It is often a route to
move on (idea from: allaboutcounselling.com/library/domestic–violence). Furthermore, I would like
to describe various therapies and the ways in which they are useful. To stabilize the individual and
help them to achieve mastery over the situation crisis intervention is used (Caplan 1964).
Techniques in crisis intervention includes: to provide an understanding that the crisis and
psychological responses are linked, mobilizing social support, ventilation of feelings, exploration
and promotion of alternative coping styles, promoting and planning for future difficulties.
Immediate intervention should also address distorted perceptions of what has happened, aim to
alleviate feelings to guilt and self–blame (Mezey 1997) and address immediate help for safety and

39. Desert Desert Environment
The deserts of central Australia make up a unique ecoregion. As it may be properly assumed, an arid
desert environment is not easy to adapt to. Many different species, including birds, reptiles,
mammals, and various plants are able to thrive in such conditions. Human impacts on the island
continent have interrupted the success of some of these species. One group of species that have been
very negatively impacted by human interaction are small digging mammals. These mammals are
typically small and almost rodent–like. Although small, digging mammals, such as Macrotis lagotis
(the Greater Bilby), have a large impact on the vegetation biodiversity of the ecoregion. They use
their front paws to dig into the ground while they search for food. In the process, diggings capture
organic matter, provide habitat for a diversity of microscopic and macroscopic organisms, and
increase nutrient cycling. Diggings also capture plant seeds, increasing seedling germination,
recruitment, and plant growth. The overall effect of mammal diggings is therefore increased plant
vigor and resilience, increased biodiversity and consequently improved ecosystem functioning
(Fleming et al 2014). Due to various impacts by human, these small mammals have quickly been
declining. The large impact humans have had on the small mammals is the introduction of invasive
species. Felis catus (feral cat) and Vulpes vulpes (fox) are overpopulated invaders who prey on
species such as Macrotis lagotis and other small

55. The Effects Of Air Quality Regulations On Human Health
Introduction
Dust storms in Arizona are a dramatic example of how changes in land use, combined with
climatological factors, can have a negative influence on human health. For decades, the state has
experienced dust storms that have led to serious traffic accidents on Arizona's highways (Brazel and
Hsu 1981). The dust storm related accidents represented a disproportionate amount of fatalities
(Hyers and Marcus 1981). However, dust can have negative effects on human health in a less
dramatic fashion. Small particles (≤ 10 micrometers) can lodge inside human lungs and cause
respiratory problems and heart attacks. The particles can also alter environmental properties such as
the nutrient concentration in water bodies and soils (U.S. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

2014). Dietz et al. (2003) presented a framework that identified the principles and requirements of
adaptive governance. Adaptive governance requires information, conflict resolution, rule
compliance, infrastructure, and adaptation and change. Those requirements are met by a governance
arrangements that follow a set of principles that are based on Ostrom's (1990) design principles:
"devise rule that are congruent with ecological conditions, clearly define boundaries of resources
and user groups, devise accountability mechanisms for monitoring, apply graduated sanctions for
violations, establish/use low–cost mechanisms for conflict resolution, involve interested parties in
informed discussion of rules, allocate authority to allow for adaptive governance at multiple levels,
and employ mixtures of institutional types" (Dietz et al. 2003).
Although the number of articles about adaptive governance has increased significantly over the past
decade (Chaffin et al. 2014), the literature on adaptive governance related to air quality appears
sparse. Tucker (2012) identifies the revision of air quality standards based on new information as an

Canberra, ACT: Australian Nature Conservation Agency.
Content Summary
In this book the authors review impact of feral cats. Feral cats have major or minor impacts on the
Australian native wildlife some of which are competitive, amensal, and predatory. The Competitive
impact caused by cats is on large predatory species by loss of prey. Amensal impact is most likely
cause by transmission of diseases. And predatory impact on native wildlife has been identified by
historical evidence. Many conclusions can be made from this evidence. Mammals make up a large
part of a feral cats diet. They target mammals weighing up to 2kg, and birds up to 1kg. But they
prefer prey weighing less then approximately 200grams in Mainland Australia. ... Show more

Chinook salmon (known by its scientific name as Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) is the largest species
out of the Pacific salmon genus, with an individual chinook measured over 120 pounds
(fishwatch.gov, 2014). Often known by the name as "king salmon", it is one of the most expensive
salmons as this species of the Pacific salmon is not abundant in North America. This salmon is
originated in rivers ranging from Central California to northwest Alaska, but can also be found
outside the United States such as in northern Pacific countries such as Canada, Russia, and Japan.
They often live in oceans, but are spawned and born in freshwater rivers and streams (fishwatch.gov,

the range between Central California to northwest Alaska. Population ranges varies within region–

1A. Banalization is the trivialization of events so as to lessen their significance the question of
power in the telling of a narrative, in which the point of view is the story being told. Versioning is a
stand on the way the world works, the idea that nothing came from nothing, in which everything is a
version of something else. Counter narrative identifies as a positional category, in which material is
reread in a new way. B. An example of banalization is the narrative of black lives matter movement,

To say that African descended populations and cultures have been erased is not an unreasonable
statement because the moment Africans were enslaved and taken from their home country they were
taught a false history, in which their past was not filled with kingship but with destitution. For
example, in Marcus D. Jones' excerpt "Africa in Mexico," Jones states, "Moreover, like the people
of Coyolillo, the majority of the inhabitants of the coastal communities south of the City of Veracruz
have even forgotten–or perhaps were never taught–the country's colonial past, when enslaved
Africans were brought directly from Africa to Mexico" (Jones). Thus, many Mexican people don't
realize that they are in fact from African decent. If the people of Mexico were taught of their past it
would answer various question regarding the ancestors of not only Spanish, Asian, and Indigenous
but also African. Ultimately, under colonial rule, Mexican society was divided into a system of
social classes where groups they were told particular aspects of their history; unfortunately, they

Obeah is not a phenomenon owned by a single culture. The practice of obeah is prevalent in

many Jamaican and Bahamian traditions rooted in West African ancestry. Although obeah has no

Sometimes called Obi, Obea, or Obia; obeah is a term used in the West Indies to refer to folk magic,
sorcery and religious practices developed among West African slaves specifically of the Igbo origin.
How and where the term 'Obeah' (with its variant spellings) first came into use in the Anglophone
Caribbean is unknown. The Oxford English Dictionary, citing the Journals of the Assembly of
Jamaica, gives 1760 as its earliest attribution. The fact that the term 'Obeah' only appears in
English–speaking America, but minimally in the British North American colonies and almost
entirely in the Caribbean, suggests that the term's earliest use in the New World was in the British
Caribbean (Bilby, 2001). Bilby and Handler also argue in their article "Obeah: Healing and
Protection in West Indian Slave Life" the term obeah is a "catch– all term referring to a diverse
range of beliefs and practices involving the control or channeling of supernatural/spiritual forces
usually for social benefits such as treating illnesses, bringing good fortune, protection against harm
and avenging wrong doings". Merriam–Webster dictionary define obeah as system of belief among

87. Alcohol Abuse And Alcohol Misuse Essay
Offences of a violent nature exist as an immense plight to victims, society and also to the offenders
themselves (Whitehead, Ward & Collie, 2007). More specifically, violent crimes associated with
alcohol misuse are considered to accumulate to half of all violent crimes conducted across the
United Kingdom (UK) (Budd, 2010). From this point alone, it could be construed that alcohol
misuse is a determinant of violent offending behaviour. However, according to Matreau (2008)
alcohol should not be considered to be a cause of crime but instead a catalyst through which the
offender's behaviour is exacerbated. Zhang (1997) furthers this argument by suggesting that alcohol
interacts with other characteristics of offending, as well as the context in which the alcohol misuse
arises, acting as a moderating variable for the crime to occur. There has since been significant
research conducted around the strength of the alcohol–violence relationship in males (e.g. Watt,
Shepherd & Newcombe, 2008; Gannon, 2007). Such research suggests that regular chronic alcohol
misuse increases the likelihood of aggression and antisocial behaviour and therefore simultaneously
increases the opportunity for violent crime to transpire (Felson & Staff, 2010; Hoaken & Phil,
2000).
Due to the high volume of violent crimes reportedly committed every year, (Needham, Gummerum,

Technology Management It is the innovation in the working environment permits organizations to

extensive client base and develop to larger amounts. Office innovation spares times by accelerating

The utilization of computerised systems like robots permit remedies to be made in a flash. Assets

Now there is the introduction of a new technology named Baxter–the robot. A 'cooperative robot'
designed to work securely alongside people, will make his debut at Haigh's Adelaide factory just
after the chocolatier's busy Easter period and is advertised to revolutionise Australia's manufacturing
industry. Baxter was created by Adelaide–born Rodney Brooks in 2012. Baxter is an answer for
makers of all sizes. Notwithstanding its extraordinarily low value point, Baxter offers six central

111. Essay on History of Rumba, Merengue and Salsa
According to Holger Henke in his The West Indian Americans, Jamaican Rex Nettleford was correct
when he said, "'dance was a primary instrument of survival'." As such a vital part of cultural
traditions, dance plays and integral role in the history culture. Three of the most influential styles of
dance in the Caribbean are the Rumba, The Merengue, and the Salsa. The word Rumba is defined by
the Merriam Webster Dictionary as "a ballroom dance of Haitian and Dominican origin in 2/4 time
in which one foot is dragged on every step." Here, however, Rumba is a collection of percussive

What we know today as Ballroom Rumba is basically son and not based on the authentic folk
rumba.
The first serious attempt to introduce the rumba to the United States was in 1913 but real interest in
Latin music began about 1929. In the late 1920's, Xavier Cugat formed an orchestra that specialized
in Latin American music and opened at the Coconut Grove in Los Angeles and later played at the
Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. By the end of the decade he was recognized as having the
outstanding Latin orchestra of the day. Monsieur Pierre was London's leading teacher of the Rumba
and in 1955 he and his partner, Doris Lavelle, introduced the true "Cuban Rumba" which was finally
established after much argument, as the official recognized version in 1955.
During this time, the intellectual movement known as Afrocubanismo, a sort of mass relization of
the value of African culture (especially in the Caribbean), gave roots to traditional rumba. When this
afrocubanismo movement came along, it helped open the doors to African rooted dancing and ways
of expression. Rumba became more accepted among Cubans and was a recognized cultural
expression that identified as a part of the Cuban people. It also provided the means at that point of
public expression for those without representation in the media, the Afro–Cubans.
Today, Rumba is most commonly performed informally and can be broken down into three types:

Issues with quantitative vs qualitative....?
There is not a mass of literature in regards to alternative practices and a downfall of these current
research is mass qualitative data. It is hard to do follow up to get empirical data....
In order to evaluate the effectiveness of 'alternative' practices, it is essential to understand the
concept of desistance. Desistance is the "long term abstinence from criminal behaviour among those
for whom offending had become a pattern of behaviour" (McNeill, et al 2012). As mentioned above,
producing or encouraging desistance is an implicit focus of much criminal justice policy and is one
of the key outcomes that justice interventions are designed to achieve (McNeill, et al 2012).
Desistance from crime, particularly for persistent offenders, is a complex and demanding process
(McNeill, et al 2011). Theories of desistance suggest that the "cessation of crime is not only about
objective transformations in an individuals' social circumstances, but also subjective evaluations or
'cognitive transformations' that frequently occur as an integral part of the reform process" (Appleton,
2010). Theorists such as Maruna (2001) and Shover (1996) argue that individuals stop offending as
a result of changes in identity, self–concept and personal agency. This idea is furthered by Vaughan
(2007) who argues that a change in personal narrative through internal moral conversation allows
desisters to develop new, pro social narrative identities which

Introduction
While marsupial species can be found in both North and South America, neither can compare to the
marsupial diversity of the isolated continent of Australia. With 180 Australian marsupial species, as
opposed to 78 South American and 1 North American species, the ecological niches filled by
marsupials in Australia are many and varied due to the lack of native eutherian mammals on the
continent. Australian marsupials evolved special adaptations to survive in the harsh and distinctive
environment found on the continent. The major area of marsupial biology that distinguishes them
