been theorized and questioned. Through my colloquium, I hope to grapple with the ways in which
art, made within and for a specific moment and culture, is able to live beyond its historical discourse
and still express a profound, multivalent sense of meaning. Looking at philosophical, religious,
sociological, and political texts from ancient time to the present, I will investigate the pressing
question, what power does the image hold in society? I will explore the ways people have both

I have never really had any great love for art, but I have never thought it could have any good effect
on me. I've known since I was little that not just the big things in museums that cost around $5000

eye.You Diserve it mama!! by, Aaron Fowler this art piece caught my eye for many reasons.One
being it was a tribute to his mom.Secondly I liked the way the artist used everyday items to create
this piece. The Art piece was very visual with the mom cooking and cleaning Fowler used cloths for
her clothing and newspaper cutouts for the pots and pans she was using to cook.He used iron boards
to display the mom and husband in their house, the husband looks as he is walking in from
somewhere with their dog next to him.Fowler was very creative with the way he designed the piece
the everyday items and the iron board had the feels of home and the way he betrayed the house with

Descriptive Art Of Art
A wave of nostalgia washed over me when I opened the door to the Durbin Gallery. Waxy, bright,
colorful, and detailed pieces ornamented the white–walled room. I smelt the same smell I did when I
was a student digging through my pencil box or when I was creating a colorful masterpiece during
my free time as a child. As I walked around the gallery and saw the pieces that the artist, Herb
Williams, created and displayed in his exhibit, Master Heist. I saw a can of Campbell's Chicken
Noodle Soup, a recreation of Vincent van Gogh's The Starry Night, word bubbles with text, and
many more. Williams brought me back to my childhood and amazed me within a matter of seconds
of entering the exhibit by using familiar objects to make familiar works of art. A thought I
continuously had while walking around the exhibit was of how cool it was to see how one individual
used crayons, something I've always correlated as a tool used to make art, to create art. The
individual pieces when observed from a distance looked to me to be a vibrant printed picture.
However, at a closer glance, it was easy to tell that it was not printed, and that it was composed of
an object that most all viewers can relate to in some way. The artist took crayons in their most
simplistic form, cylinders of wax, to a new level. The thousands of crayons were arranged by color
and placed specifically with either the point or flat ends facing outwardly to create depth and

city is the best course of action for everyone. I will argue that Socrates is correct in his assessment

topics today, when people have become so crazy about some artists or characters that there are huge

We should, at the least, accept their art as legitimate. According to me, if people go against fan art
and discourage it, there will be a time when creativity will end. We cannot end the imaginations of
fans. We just need to make sure that the rules are followed before creating or sharing a fan art. I'm
against the notion of not even considering fan art legitimate, because I think it is a great balance that

"Design is a funny word. Some people think design means how it looks. But of course, if you dig
deeper, it's really how it works"–Steve Jobs. Many of us undergo some sort of creative adventure,
whether it's within ourselves or the world surrounding us. We take in different elements to form
some sort of masterpiece that expresses whatever we're feeling or what we want others to feel. Art,
that's what we call it. Or do we call it design? Which brings up the question, isn't it both? Both
designers and artists create visuals, but for entirely different reasons. There is a clear severance
between the two creative worlds, the critical thinking, lack of self expression and formulated

fixed, and designers are addicted to doing so. Of course designers are aware that there is never one

I will admit, I was not looking for any certain topic as I scrolled to find this article; however, the
headline caught my attention. As an art student influenced by art throughout life, I find the arts
crucial to behavioral and social development in the early stages of our lives. According to the article

In philosophy, art and more specifically the definition of art is very controversial. There has been
ongoing debate on whether or not art can truly be defined. If defined, is there worth behind the
definition? There are two main contemporary definitions that can be used to narrow down this
category. Modern conventionalist and contemporary both focus on art but at a different extent.
Modern conventionalist emphasizes the movement of art and how it changes over time as well as it
focuses on features and the relation properties. The broader definition is more of a traditional idea
that focuses on more of arts characteristics and cultural background. Philosophers also take into
consideration the concept of what truly is aesthetically pleasing. Using these resources philosophers
must attempt to create a definition of the subject if at all possible. There are varying definitions of
art that change throughout time however; there are a few indisputable facts that must be followed.
Artifacts do not always have to be aesthetically pleasing. There are some entities that have non–
aesthetic functions like propagandistic and religious work. Art is a sense and it is an importance. An
example of this would be beauty. Beauty brings desire and excitement however to each is their own.
There is no objective meaning of the beauty. There is no reasoning behind why one thing is more

What do you love to do? Maybe you love art, maybe you love acting, or maybe you love sports.

shows what the white–dominated art world does not. Each piece of work tells the story of different
individuals and their struggles of what it is like conforming in America where Asians are viewed as
"perpetual foreigners". From one medium to another, the Black Arts Movement, which lasted from
1965 to 1975, was a great impact on society. Following the assassination of Malcolm X, black
people came together to protest their liberty. While it had the most effect in theatre and poetry,
African Americans spoke their minds through literature, visual arts, and music. Not only reaching
cultural recognition and economic success, the Black Arts Movement brought about modern–day
hip hop and spoken word.
The arts have a way of bringing a community together by having people discuss a certain topic or
controversy currently going on in the world. The arts open minds and hearts to something previously

The second chapter aims to examine more closely the understanding of readymade forms in the art
world. Particularly, it focuses on two art movements that come to challenge the notion of art: found
art and conceptual art. Both conceptual art and found art challenge the unity between form and
content in art. Both seek the superiority of the one in opposition to the other, that is, form in found
art and content in conceptual art. But could art survive merely as form or concept? According to
Danto, the meaning of these works and their art identity does not depend on their formal properties
but comes through an interpretation or theory. The problem with Danto's approach is that it
marginalises the role of the perceptual and of the experience of art. The chapter considers Seamon's
thesis on the modern theory of artistic value and Fowkes's discussion of found art and conceptual
art. Both suggest an understanding of these movements in terms of the internal or conceptual
dimension of art, that is, the metaphorical function of art. This study aims to examine the notion of
the conceptual in found art and conceptual art and the art identity of these works. Duchamp's
polished urinal calls the viewer not to see it as an image of something else, but rather to gaze it as an

Art can be defined in so many ways. Our art experience is based on seeing, feeling, and what we
know. After all art is an expression of emotions. Our responses to art are a learned behavior that is
influenced by class, gender, race, geography, education and culture. The art forms that have meaning

Calypso music is an artform, which was developed in Trinidad. It showcases the skills of story–
telling, singing and instrument making, and has since been influenced by European, North American
and other Caribbean cultures. Calypso is a unique form of music that is an important part of the
Caribbean cultural history. Calypso music usually involves some social review, sarcasm on social
and political events, with an catchy beat. Other calypsos are strictly for "wuking up" aka dancing or
a type of twerking style of moving your hips to the beat. Calypso could almost be called the official
music of Carnival. It was first referred to as the music of the slaves and then the poor working–class
blacks who struggled to make ends meet, the sounds of calypso have evolved to become the sounds

Although Basquiat's mother Matilde was the driving force behind the artist at a young age, it was his
life experiences which shaped his personality and in turn his artwork. The first shift in focus for
Basquiat occurred in 1968 when he was struck by an automobile and injured. While recovering, his
mother gifts him a copy of Gray's Anatomy and here is where he takes special interest in anatomy
which is later reflected in his pieces. At age 15, Basquiat runs away from home after his parents had
been divorced and his mother was in and out of mental institutions. Basquiat led a life on the streets
of New York, sleeping on park benches in Tompkins Square Park and eating what he could find.
Around this time, in 1976, he and Al Diaz create a fictional character by the name of SAMO (Same
Old Shit) and the two began to spread witty philosophical messages throughout the Lower East Side
of Manhattan. The SAMO days begin to build a name for Basquiat and, along with his ingenious
and suave personality, he slowly integrates in the art scene of New York. Basquiat's capacity to
distill his perception of the outside world down to their essence, and project them outward through
his art is what defined his unique style. He was capable of digesting complex social issues such as
racial injustice or religion and unlock a more basic truth through his simple, thought provoking

civilizations have formed. There have been many different forms of art and extremely different
tastes of art based on which civilization you decide to focus on. According to this opinion, out of all
the different types of art, "the highest form of art is realism." The writer then claims how many
civilizations have undergone intellectual and creative declines when creating unrealistic art. This, of
course, is simply an opinion, but the the thoughts and ideas of this writers bring up many intriguing
questions about art and how society perceives art. First, I will analyze the writer's opinions by
bringing up examples that are in agreement with his or her opinion. In a way, I do agree with the

Greek marble statue of Kouros is not as appealing to me because of its rigid form and geometric
body type create this unrealistic expression of the human body. In addition, the large eyes and
archaic smile on the face of sculpture add to the lack of realism to the whole piece. This sculpture

Art Enriches "Art does not solve problems, but makes us aware of their existence," sculptor
Magdalena Abakanowicz has said. The ability to express oneself with arts has been not only
therapeutic but educational. Arts learning can improve motivation, confidence, and teamwork. Art
can encompass many different activities .Being a New Orleanian we are surrounded by all types of
art. We don't always take advantage of this rich cultural and sightsee all the city has to offer. That is
why after years of living here I have decided to explore. I stop by the Saenger Theatre located on
Canal Street. According to the Saenger official website, the Saenger Theatre opened on February 4,
1927. This source claims the theatre took three years to build and cost $2.5 million. The building is
such a staple on Canal. Before its renovation in 2013, the outside of it looked like something I could
pass up easily especially during the daytime. Now as I walked on the sidewalk. I see on the outside
of the building a timeline of historical events. I could not help admiring the facts posted around the
building. They were vibrant colored pictures detailing some facts about the Saenger and some
fascinating historical events. A notable picture talks about the first "talkie" to debut at the Saenger
which was Lights of New York. Walking inside I feel a high–class aura that also feels welcoming.
High extravagant ceilings was one of things I noticed in the lobby.

"What is Art?" Art is the aesthetic experiences we encounter when we are exposed to new responses
of sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell (McGraw 2013). According to McGraw "no society has
lived without some form of art in human history." (2013) We have the ability to create images that
have evolved and find a new relationship with each one. Art is composed of meaningfulness in
every aspect, from the artist perspective. The symbolism of art changes from era to era. Art is
created by individuals who have acquired traits of; sensitivity, flexibility, originality, playfulness,
productivity, fluency, analytical and organizational skills (McGraw 2013). We will later elaborate on
these traits individually through pieces of art. The shift of cultures has impacted the trait of art,
through eras of history, which impact artist mindset and modern culture.
The meaning of "Art" to me personally is something that you should have a connection with and or
understanding of what the artist is talking about by looking at the painting or drawing. "The quality,
production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing,

being simplified, fragmented and distorted. With that being said Art is needed to be natural and

The Importance Of Art In Art
In the rather limited amount of years I've been on this Earth, I have found myself drawn to the world
of creativity. I kept it in my pocket constantly, always knowing that I'd need creative insight in this
world to solve difficult problems. I always had art as an outlet for many things, and soon I became
addicted to colors, shades, and designs. It's very important to me, and I hope to go further with it. To
me, it is vexing when others hold an obvious distaste for trying anything new or creative. I don't
hope to change these individual's minds, as that would be impossible, but rather, I hope to educate
them on why having a creative, or artistic sense–the new 'sixth sense' if you will, is vital to being a
part of society. Being creative, or artistic, is important, because it allows me to break away from the
stubborn rules society has forced upon us. When I draw, I have no boundaries other than what I give
myself. I don't have to restrain what I draw, as no one else will see it unless I want them to. It's
important to have this break from 'the real world' because without it, the world seems very bleak and
downright sorrowful. Artistic values are a necessity to me, because without them, I wouldn't have as
many opportunities to better the world around me. Art provides many career paths, such as comic
books, or even advertising. Every art community can have a huge impact on people's daily lives,
without them even realizing it. Take for instance, the billboard you drive by every day to work, or
the comic strips you read on your Sunday paper. Though seemingly insignificant in your eyes, they
are so important in the way you make decisions. When advertisements on TV are shown, no one
really thinks about the artistic aspects the creators use to influence decisions. A prime example of
this, that everyone knows purely by the now recognizable song, is Sarah McLachlan's ASPCA
commercial seen constantly, with the same set up. But what everyone might not know, is that it took
creative insight to pair the sad puppy images, with the depressing song. The artists knew that these
things would guide you to feel sympathetic, and maybe even adopt a puppy. The world would be

art from the readymades of Duchamp right up to the latest exhibition of the Chapman brothers at the
Jerwood Gallery in Hastings. Appropriation in art is the use of pre–existing objects or images with
little or no transformation applied to them and that the new work re contextualises whatever it
borrowed to create the new work. There has been an ongoing debate about the validity of
appropriated art probably since art has existed. The striking resemblance of Titian 's Urbino to

Olympia 1873 For me personally, I tend to agree with Picasso when he said , "The bad artist imitate,

the debate about appropriation in the modern era. It 's basically an enamel urinal exhibited in Paris
causing a scandal in some quarters and awe in others. As the Independent noted in an article of
February 2008, that with this single work, Duchamp invented Conceptual art and "severed forever
the traditional link between the artist 's labour and the merit of the work." Here, Conceptual art
being where ideas or concepts involved in the work take precedence over traditional aesthetic and
material concerns.
