4. What is a Genetically Modified Organism?
It involves the insertion of DNA from one organism into another OR
modification of an organism’s DNA in order to achieve a desired trait.

A genetically modified organism (GMO) is
any organism whose genetic materialhas
been altered using genetic
engineering techniques
§ The first animal genetically modified (
mouse) was in 1981 and the first plant
was in 1983
§ GMOs are used in many domains :
biological and medicaluses,
drugs, experimentalmedicine ,
agriculture….
§ GMOs in agriculture helped develop
products (soybean, cotton, canola,
corn…) more resistant to disease,
requiring less water and to improve
yields,
§ 40.8 % world’s GM crops grown in the
U.S,
§ 76.3%world’s GM cropsgrown by the
U.S., Brazil, and Argentina.

Adheres to the precautionary principle in respect to justifying a ban on Genetically Engineered products
from local cultivation and from their presence in products for human consumption while simultaneously
recognizing their international presence and acceptance as an animal feed source agricultural activities
remain active but limited largely to research with no developed Genetically engineered products having
been commercialized for local production.
