2. Whistle-blowing refers to “disclosure by
organization members (former or current)
of illegal, immoral, or illegitimate practices
under the control of their employers, to
persons or organizations that may be able
to effect action”
3. External: Lawyers, mass media, law
enforcement, or watchdog agencies.
Internal: Designated officer, employees
or
superiors in the same organization.
4. First whistleblower was Karen Silkwood, a
chemical technician at the Kerr-McGee plant in
Oklahoma who disclosed serious safety
violations. She was killed in mysterious car
accident.
In 2002, SherronWatkins, a vice president at the
multi-national Enron Corporation, testified
before a Senate committee and exposed the
company's numerous fraudulent attempts to
falsify the financial statements.The scandal led to
one of the largest corporate failures in history.
5. In India An engineer, Satyendra Dubey, was murdered in
November 2003; Dubey had blown the whistle in a
corruption case in the National Highways Authority of
India’s Golden Quadrilateral project.
Two years later an IndianOilCorporation officer
Shanmughan Manjunath, was murdered for sealing a petrol
pump that was sellingadulterated fuel.
A Karnataka official SP Mahantesh, said to be a whistle-
blower in controversial land allotments by societies was
murdered in May 2012. Mahantesh was working as Deputy
Director of the audit wing in the state’s Cooperative
department and had reported irregularities in different
societies involving some officials and political figures.
6. A senior police officer alleged that Mayawati's
government was corrupt and had embezzled large
amounts of money. Shortly thereafter, he was sent to
a psychiatric hospital.
