 Anders Ericsson and colleagues developed the
conceptual framework of deliberate practice to
explain the development of expertise in many
domains
 Purposeful practice to optimise improvement over 10
years (Simon and Chase, 1973)
 Individual differences are closely related to practice
regimes
 Many differences thought to be innate are due to
practice
 Simple engagement in deliberate practice is not
inherently motivating

and coaches can only recall 30% of
performance correctly – performance
analysis (PA) helps with the remaining 70%
(English Institute of Sport; 2012)

 Performance Analysis (PA) is an objective way
of recording performance so that key elements
of that performance can be quantified in a valid
and consistent manner
(Hughes and Franks, 1997)
 PA attempts to minimise subjectivity and bias
in the coaching process
 To be truly ‘objective’ we need a set of rules
to ensure scientific rigor
 In PA these are referred to as Operational
Definitions

  • 4.  Anders Ericsson and colleagues developed the conceptual framework of deliberate practice to explain the development of expertise in many domains  Purposeful practice to optimise improvement over 10 years (Simon and Chase, 1973)  Individual differences are closely related to practice regimes  Many differences thought to be innate are due to practice  Simple engagement in deliberate practice is not inherently motivating
