Power is essential to the everyday lives of everyone. Without reliable power even the simplest tasks such as cooking would be more complicated. To ensure that power is always available when required, operators at system control centers monitor the system to ensure power supply and energy demand remains balanced. When an unbalanced situation is occurring, the operator must react by utilizing auxiliary combustion turbine generators to keep the system running stable. The Load Demand Generator Controller provides the operator with a simple manual touch screen interface as well as an automatic control for supplement generation. The controller utilizes a network of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Human Machine Interface (HMI) to activate and deactivate backup or peaking generators based on real-time demand. This monitoring is done through sampling of the power systems quality. When the load demand increases the controller will respond by activating outputs to turn on generators to supplement the system. As the demand decreases it turns off the unnecessary generators in an effort to conserve energy, resources and costs. The Load Demand Generator Controllers allows the system to operate in a standalone environment as well as provides the flexibility to have remote capabilities reducing the potential loss of electricity to the individual ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],In power systems, reliable and stable power is a must. When the load demand has exceeded, it needs to be supplemented by use of Peaking Generation Stations. At these stations, Combustion Turbines are used to supplement power system grid during these power deficiencies. Combustion turbines are usually smaller generators powered by natural gas or diesel oil that can be brought online quickly to meet the required demand to supplement base load generators. These combustion turbines are typically a more expensive method of power generation. They are primarily used at peak times in the summer or winter months when customers are utilizing heating or cooling equipment for extended periods of time. The Load Demand Power Generation controller can be used to activate these generators at times of high demand or emergency situations when base load generators become unavailable. By utilizing the controller power efficiency and reliability can be added to the power system. In conclusion my project is a device that uses programmable logic controllers that has a practical use for power generation. The benefit of the controller is that it can reduce the need for human interaction in case of a power emergency. It can also make split second decisions automatically and prevent power interruptions or failures. By the use of networking the controllers, it can expand to a large network of controllers that can talk to each other as well as a central operator. It can also relay information back to the operator such as status of itself, generators and other critical situations. This can allow the ratio of human operators to generators to reduce, thus reducing overall operating cost.
