1. I want to talk about the monument of Christopher Columbus. The statue was
sculpted by Rafael Atché and it was built in 1888, for the Universal Exposition of
Barcelona. You can find it in Pl. Portal de la Pau.
The bronze statue is 7,2 m tall and it stands on a column which is 40m tall. The
total height of the Columbus monument is 60m. Columbus is supposedly pointing
towards the New World with his right hand, while holding a scroll in the left. But
in actual fact the statue points East towards Columbus home city of Genoa.
The monument was built to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the discovery
of America.
Columbus stands on a globe with the inscription "Earth". At the base of the
column you can see another statue of Columbus holding scrolls and some scenes
from his trip.
I want to recommend you to visit this monument because there is a remarkable
sight from it.
