6. RENAISSANCE TEXTILES
During the Renaissance, luxurious fabrics made of
silk and precious metal threads counted among the
most valuable items owned by both individuals and
the Church. As an expression of power, wealth, and
taste, specially woven fabrics incorporating a family
coat-of-arms or other motifs associated with the
family’s reputation were particularly valuable.

Rhythm, harmony, form, and notation,
became a vehicle for new personal
expression. Composers found ways to
make music expressive of the texts they
were setting.

Renaissance artists painted a
wide variety of themes. Religious
altarpieces, fresco cycles, and
small works for private devotion
were very popular.
