Project: Corporate announcement
Client: Kennametal - Latrobe, Pennsylvania
Kennametal’s commitment to customer service has taken a monumental step forward with certification of
the company’s first Six Sigma Black Belt.
Cheryl Bush, Manufacturing Operations Excellence manager, recently achieved the distinction after
developing a Six Sigma training approach for MSSG Global Manufacturing.
Six Sigma is a business methodology that seeks to eliminate defects and variation according to the
requirements of the customer, chiefly through incorporation of specific steps and measurable outcomes.
The Six Sigma approach represents a natural fit with Kennametal’s commitment to Lean manufacturing
practices, as evidenced by a recent modification that integrates Six Sigma into the requirements for a
Kennametal Value Business System Lean Black Belt. The change is designed to ensure greater adoption of
Six Sigma, which, ultimately, will enhance customer service.
In demonstrating her mastery of Six Sigma, Bush trained more than 75 Green Belts. She also supported
Six Sigma manufacturing projects led by Green Belt trainees to ensure proper application of the
methodology. One such initiative was a Mill 1 insert project to reduce scrap. In addition, Bush led efforts to
improve Kennametal’s mark, pack and label performance.
Before joining Kennametal in November 2006, Bush achieved Six Sigma certification at the Green Belt,
Black Belt and Master Black Belt levels with a previous employer.
