Serial Killer Vs Mass Killer
Over the course of the semester we discussed many things in this class one being serial and mass
murderers. Under that umbrella we discussed the differences between the two, the victims they may
attack, the reasons why they kill, personal backgrounds, and explanations to why they kill. At the
end of this course we were asked to pick a type of killer and explain what it is we learned from
them. For this paper I chose to talk about serial killers. The killers I chose to discuss are Paul
Bernardo and Karla Homolka but we will get to them later on.
Serial killers differ from mass murderers because serial killers kill over a period of time with a
cooling off period whereas mass murderers have one big killing with four or more victims and no

However, there was some childhood trauma for Paul. At a young age his father was convicted of
child molestation. His mother suffered from depression. This caused Paul to beat/harm his
girlfriends he had in college and to eventually become a sexual sadist. Paul was a bright young man
who graduated from the university of Scarborough. Neither killer had a criminal record prior to their
convictions stated above. I classified each serial killer as both organized and disorganized. I say that
because DNA was left at the scene of their crimes but they strategically lured and disposed of their
victims. Over the course of the semester we have discussed many types of killers such as partner
groups, serial, and mass murderers. We discussed why killers kill and we also discussed specific
killers. I have grown to enjoy the criminology of killers. I have also learned that we can't really
screen for certain types of killers due to self –fulfilling prophecy. I chose the Ken and Barbie killers
because I wanted to know why certain killers engage in relationships and kill at the same time. I
wanted to know what the purpose was of that type of dominance and I was able to find

Stereotypes Of Serial Killers
Unlike murderers, a psychopath's urge to kill does not come from average family affairs, financial
disputes, or disagreements in relationships. Psycho killers are driven by a desire to kill that is often
sexual and causes them to murder strangers and it is imperative to determine what makes a serial
killer so distinct from homicidal murderers. It has been proved that genetics is the key role in
determining who becomes a serial killer while criminologists and psychologists argue that abuse and
abandonment create the foundation in which serial killers grow into vicious murders. The largest
difference between a murderer and a serial killer is their desire to kill.

Surroundings, behaviour, childhood experiences and frequent traumas are imperative factors during
the early stages of one's life due to how it may affect them as a person. "Naturally we are all born
with a different genetic make up but many argue that differences in DNA do not create a
psychokiller. The main focus of many criminologists and psychologists are the origins and the
surroundings of these killers childhood" ("Serial"). While growing up, potential serial murderers
exposed to abuse or traumas will seek for emotional relief through acts of violence such as harming
a younger sibling or animals. "Serial killers generally seek control over the life of another, and at a
younger age a small animal is the only type of creature they will be able to fully dominate"
("Early")". By hurting someone smaller and more vulnerable to seek comfort and emotional release,
the potential serial killer will feel in control and open to exert dominance. "Victims of abuse and
rejection, serial killers find comfort in their fantasies and dreams that take them into a realm that
only they can control" ("Serial")". Control and dominance is a common

Serial Killer Traits
Serial Killers: Genetically or Environmentally Engineered? According to the Federal Bureau of
Investigation, the definition of serial murder is "the unlawful killing of two or more victims by the
same offender(s), in separate events" ("Serial Murder"). There are many definitions for serial
murder, but ultimately it narrows down to the amount of killings and how spaced out the events are.
A serial killer is a very organized planner, often waiting for the right moment or the right person
before they carry out their next malicious attack. Other common traits include abusive and
neglectful childhoods, mental disorders or psychopathic traits, normal to high IQ's, they are
"cunning and manipulative," have an inability to feel regular emotions like ... Show more content on

It makes sense that a child with a very abusive, neglectful life is easier to succumb to the reality of
serial murder. What about the serial killers who had a somewhat normal childhood? Charles
Manson, an infamous leader of the cult that carried out the Tate/LaBianca killings which included
the deaths of seven wealthy Hollywood residents, is also believed to be involved in a total of thirty–
five murders. This personification of evil grew up as one might expect. He was neglected by his
young, alcoholic and prostitute of a mother and lived his life on the street or behind bars for silly
crimes. It makes sense that Manson turned out the way he did. It's awful, but it makes sense. On the
other hand, there is Jeffrey Dahmer, whom murdered seventeen males in accordance to rape,
dismemberment, necrophilia, and cannibalism. Dahmer had a pretty standard childhood. He lived
under a stable roof with two parents and was described as joyful child. When Dahmer received
surgery for a double hernia at an early age was when his parents noticed a shift in behavior. Around
the age of ten to fifteen, when his parents marriage ended, sprouted another change in Dahmer. He
became socially withdrawn, started having strange interests in dead animals, and became a heavy
drinker. His mannerisms continued to negatively falter from that point. He committed his first
murder when he was only eighteen years old. It seems unusual that a

Dennis Nilson stated "a mind can be evil without being abnormal". If this is the case, then what
makes a serial killer tick? The definition of a serial killer is; a series of two or more murders
committed as separate events usually, but not always, by one offender standing alone. (Brookes,
1988) Over the years, many murderers have been given this term. From the early days of Jack the
Ripper, to the most recently publicized case of "the sniper", all have different motives and reasons to
the crimes that they commit. Most of the serial killers suffer from mental illness/addictions or have
had traumatic life experiences. This is not always the case though; some can also be racially
motivated. The typical serial killer is a lower to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Malvo was sentenced to many life sentences without parole, and Muhammad was sentenced to the
death penalty. Both killers still have pending trials within other states.
Forensic Science
Forensic and DNA casework has been a major player in catching these cold blooded killers. Since
most investigators have to work from clues, they rely on these sources to lead them in the right
direction. Many findings such as, blood, weapons, hair, or any source of DNA can help put the
puzzle pieces of these cases together. This has solved many cases, and is a strong piece of evidence
in the judicial system.
Muhammad & Malvoy, "The Snipers" In the sniper case, an anonymous caller (believed to be
Muhammad) told a priest to inform police to investigate a robbery in Alabama. When the police
looked into the robbery, part of the evidence Alabama's police force had found were a set of
fingerprints from a magazine. Further investigation proved these prints belongs to Malvo, who was
already on file. Since Malvo lived with Muhammad for a year in Washington, they were both linked
together. After police knew about Muhammad, they discovered he purchased an old police car in
New Jersey. After announcing to the public the type of vehicle to search for, it led to the capture of
the two killers.

Characteristics of a Serial Killer
In the sick minds of those who murder, pain and death are twisted into a passion to kill. Unlike a
"normal" individual, serial killers rely on murdering to fulfill their craving of their gruesome thrills
and addiction. Most of society incorrectly views serial killers because of how they are portrayed on
television. For example, Dexter is a handsome serial killer who does lead a normal life but, he takes
it upon himself to rid all of the "bad guys" in the world in order to accomplish his need to kill. Then
there's Freddy Krueger, he gets revenge and kills people in their dreams, causing their death in the
real world as well. Michael Meyers and Dr. Hannibal Lecter are more examples of infamous serial
killers. All of these exaggerated serial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was beyond evident that Bundy was heartless. Bundy had said, "I didn't know what made people
want to be friends. I didn't know what made people attractive to one another. I didn't know what
underlay social interactions.I don't feel guilty for anything. I feel sorry for people who feel guilt."
Ted Bundy was attractive, intelligent and had a future in politics, he was also one of the most
prolific serial killers in U.S. history (Brogaard and Marlow). Furthermore, most serial killers have a
history of neglect, injury or abuse in their childhood. Such as, Jeffrey Dahmer, whose mother was ill
during her pregnancy. In his early adolescence, he was then sexually molested by a neighbor boy in
rural Bath Township. Then later on down the road, his parents went through a rough divorce which
he took to heart greatly, as they both left him out of a decision in choosing a home because he had
recently turned 18 years old. Feeling insecure and abandoned, Dahmer began experimenting with
fire, and collecting road kill and stripping the animal carcasses and saving the bone. A serial killer is
not born with a desire to kill, it's their morbid experiences early on in their life that cause
psychological damages that drive them to power and the thirst for murdering (Jeffrey Dahmer). The
kind of experiences a serial killer had in their early life can sometimes depict the forms in

Serial Killer : Serial Killers
According to an FBI study, "there have been approximately 400 serial killers in the United States in
the past century, with anywhere from 2,526 to 3,860 victims (Hickey). No one really understands
serial killers. It is actually quite difficult to comprehend how the mind of a serial killer works. Some
believe that a serial killer feels strongly attracted by a specific physical characteristic in the victim.
It could be his or her appearance: facial features, clothes, or even personality. On the other hand,
many individuals believe the connection is within an ethnic group, gender, or age. As for serial
killers not only do psychological components contribute to their upbringing but also the
environmental atmosphere. Although society is intrigued by the so–called celebrity monster the
prevalent information and media coverage is accountable for the real–life serial killer
transfiguration. The topic of serial killers to an extent has caused pivotal debates even among
countries. It consistently questions the jurisdictional matters. Serial killers are linked within the dark
nature of society and its irreversible craving for grotesque news. The fixated obsession with serial
killers in popular culture is quite an interchangeable topic. The central question that is consistently
debated among nations is why does society find serial killers so fascinating? Regardless of books,
movies, and research the dark nature of the perpetrator fail to notice the insight of a serial killer's
mind.

Serial Killers : A Serial Killer Essay
Introduction
Crimes and criminals define not only places, but certain time periods. Serial killers are usually the
ones that individuals tend to remember the most. An individual is considered a serial killer when
they murder three or more individuals during a period of time with a cooling off period between
each crime (Frailing & Harper, 2016). The purpose of this paper is to discuss one of the most
controversial and yet famous serial killer, Theodore Robert Bundy. Something interesting that
attracts the attention of most towards him is the fact that he was an unexpected face for a serial
killer. The fact that he was handsome, intelligent, integrated into his community and with a bright
future ahead of him made him an unexpected suspect during the investigation.
Background
Theodore Robert Bundy, best known as Ted Bundy, was born on November 24, 1946, to Louise
Cowell. He was born in a home for unmarried women and raised by his grandparents as parents and
his mother as a sister. Ted Bundy murdered beautiful young women during the 1970s and 1980s. He
confessed to killing 36 females, but before his death, he hinted of killing more (Ramsland, 2013).
According to the New York Times article posted on January 25, 1989, he would target campuses in
the look for females that attracted his interest. Using his charm, good looks and usually faking an
arm or leg injury he would attract his victims into approaching his car. He usually sexually

Female Serial Killers : A Serial Killer Essay
Female Serial Killers For the most part the domain of serial homicide is ruled by men. There is
however some females that has and can be serial killers. According to Bartol & Bartol (2005) there
have been at thirty six female serial killers throughout the United States. In general society we do
not like to believe that women are capable of committing such acts, but as we continue to alter our
views, moral, and beliefs of women's equality and feminism there is room for women to be just as
likely to become serial killers. As long as the conditions and environment that facilitate such
behavior allows for it. Women who become serial killers usually kill for different reasons than their
male counterparts. Their overall motives vary from each female serial killer, but generally they kill
for "...purpose of comfort..." like money, insurance, etc... (Holmes &Holmes, 1991). Female serial
killers usually end up killing known individuals that have some type of relationship that is not to say
that female serial killer won't kill strangers. One third of female serial killers kill strangers (Holmes
& Holmes, 1991). Although not as well–known there are infamous female serial killers throughout
our history and will likely be more in the future.

Serial Killers in the World
Overview
In the 1980s serial killers were understood to be a new development, a phenomenon frequently
accredited to the excesses of American culture. It was a decade of change, one of freedom and great
music. It was also a decade that brought the shock and fear of serial killers. Today it seems as if all
societies have serial killers. People in today's society are left with questions such as: Who are they?
Why are they so different? Why do they commit such horrific crimes? There are many theories that
psychologists and sociologists have researched but found no definite answers. The Bureau of Justice
Statistics partnership with MINCAVA reported that, between 1976 and 1994 there were an estimated
405,089 murders in the United States. Of these, the circumstances surrounding the murder are
known in 317,925, or 78.5%. Among the cases with known circumstances, an estimated 4,807, or
1.5%, were classified as involving rape or another sex offense (Greenfeld 1997). Though the vast
majority of violent sex offending involves males assaulting female victims, females account for a
small percentage of known offenders, and males account for a small percentage of victims
(Greenfeld, 1997).
Serial killers are a disturbing piece of the puzzle of society that we must figure out to save the lives
of the public in the future. Although the term serial killer loosly means killing serveral people by
different means, there are those who are indeed survivors of these horrific acts and live to tell

Essay on Serial Killers
Serial Killers
Serial killers kill because of three patterns we see develop throughout their lives. These patterns are
the development of youthful characteristics and habits, abusing events in their lives, and the final
push. To be qualified as a serial killer one must murder more than three victims, one at a time, in a
relatively short time period. The most common serial killers are white, heterosexual, sexually
frustrated, young adult males with low self–esteem. Lester Ballard, the main character in Child of
God, by Cormac McCarthy, displays these patterns as I have found it described in texts on serial
killers.
The earliest warning signs of serial killers can be traced back to their childhood. It is ... Show more

Many of these behaviors individually are expected of children. Some on the other hand, such as
self–mutilation, cruelty to children, and convulsions, are not and are quite shocking to us. Lester
Ballard displays many of these symptoms in the novel. For example as a child, Lester lost a softball
and forced a younger boy to go get it by punching him in the face.
The top three most reported behaviors are daydreaming, compulsive masturbation, and isolation.
Daydreaming seems like a healthy, normal phase in every child's life, but this behavior actually
makes sense for serial killers. The reason is that one of the most important components to the
creation of a serial killer is fantasy. The killings are usually part of a complicated fantasy that builds
to a climax at the moment of their deadly outburst (Serial Killer Info Polls). The creation of this
fantasy starts as a child when the child is frequently left alone for long periods of time. This
isolation bores the child and they resort to their minds for company. We can all remember the days
of imagining our knight in shining armor coming to the rescue, or pretending to have immense
strength, like the Incredible Hulk or Superman, to help them escape from any situation. In the cases
of serial killers this fantasy/daydream world has been taken to an extreme. Masturbation begins
during these fantasies and contributes much to the

Serial Killers : A Serial Killer
To begin, one must understand a serial killers background to get an understanding of how childhood
trauma could lead to their need to kill. Although there are no exact factors that would absolutely
cause a child to grow up into a serial killer, research found by Laurence Miller in "Serial killers: II.
Development, Dynamics, and Forensics," suggest that there are several common factors found in
multiple serial killers' childhoods. For example, some of the leading childhood characteristics found
among serial killers include being adopted, being the sons of a prostitute, and have underwent sever
physical or sexual abuse (Miller, 2013, p.13). This demonstrates that such experiences, at a young
age, can be very traumatic and create this need of comfort that most serial killers satisfy through the
murdering of multiple innocent individuals. However, the most shocking yet prevalent form of
abuse comes from the mothers. This can be noted as Miller states that an increasing amount of serial
killers had, "...intensely ambivalent, smothering relationships with their mothers that were
characterized by both maternal abuse and sexual attraction to the mother (Miller, 2013, p.13). Miller
also noted that many of these individuals came from dysfunctional families that indeed had a history
of either psychiatric disorders, substance abuse, or legal problems (Miller, 2013, p.13). With such
information, one begins to understand where these individuals turned cold but even then, nothing

The Characteristics Of Serial Killers
"The Killer Clown," is a nickname many won't forget. Throughout the 1970's, this man quietly
rampaged the streets of a suburb in Chicago, kidnapping young men and shattering the lives of their
families. He carried out his crimes until he was captured in the late '70s. The killer clown was
revealed to be the man known as John Wayne Gacy. His case was very unique. He struggled with his
sexuality and even had an alter ego known as "Pogo the Clown" (Morrison). According to Gacy, this
alter ego controlled who he was and forced him to kill. Cases like Gacy's is where the question of
insanity appears. This has led many forensic psychologists to raise the question of if there is really
something wrong with the minds of serial killers.
Even though the topic of serial killers has become increasingly popular, there are some that still
believe in the traditional stereotype of a serial killer: sexually motivated to murder as many women
as possible. However, they are much more complicated than that. Serial killers have been
misconceived for centuries; moreover, they have been plastered with labels such as insane or
animals. Thus, studies are being conducted and articles are being written to inform the public that
there might, and is more to serial killers than what people are led to believe. There are exceedingly
particular traits that separate serial killers from other murderers, and the complex ways their mind's
function goes far beyond society's common misconceptions of who they are

Serial Killer : Serial Killers
What is a serial killer? Serial killers are very sick and distraught compared to others. As indicated by
the Vancouver Sun, a serial killer is characterized as somebody who is responsible for more than
three killings over a period that than traverses over one month. In 2005 the fbi changed it to at least
two killings with no reference to intention or time span. Generally, serial killers murder for some
kind of mental benefit. Serial Killers can come in all shapes and sizes: don 't be tricked by moxy,
charm, and attractiveness. The MO is basically the way the predator commits the crime. While the
MO tells us something about how he did it, the signature gives us some insight into why.The
signature is a ritual, something the subject does intentionally for emotional satisfaction. The MO
could be changed throughout the time of the killings. Ted Bundy and Gary Ridgway are two serial
killers with some similarity in their style but different MO's.
Known as the Green River Killer, Gary Ridgway is responsible for at least 49 murders in
Washington state before he was caught in 2001.Between 1982 and 1998, he picked up young women
many of them were said to be alleged prostitutes or runaways. Gary Ridgway would usually pick up
his victims along the South Pacific Highway in Seattle,Washington. He would show the victim a
picture of his son in order to gain their trust. Gary would have sex with the victim and then pay
afterwards. Following sex, Gary would strangle his victims to death. He

Countless people especially, criminologist have researched serial killers because they are so
fascinating. Many disagree as to what the legal definition of a serial murder, which is, "[t]he
unlawful killing of two or more victims by the same offender(s), in separate events. (Morton et al.

of the research and documentation is specifically aimed around male serial killers. Over all, there
are not a large amount of female serial killers, so there has not been as much research done about
them; yet there are numerous documented cases of female serial killers. Male and female serial
killers are alike in some ways; however, they differ in many like their modus operandi (MO.),
preferred victim type, and motives.
Most of the research and documentation is specifically aimed around male serial killers because
there have been so many. Nonetheless, there are numerous documented cases of female serial
killers. In 2010, there were 356 female serial killers as opposed to 3514 male serial killers (Aamodt

Both male and female serial murderers have an MO; however, the female serial killer's MO tends to
be different from the males '. Females frequently use less obvious means of murder than their male
counterparts. The most common choice amongst the females happens to be poison, which is used

Serial Killer Characteristics
Serial Killers are a product of their environment rather than result of the genes they were born with.
Parental and peer abuse is the main contributing factor in the shaping of a serial killer. Serial killer
traits can range from physical abuse to bed wetting in the adolescence stage of their lives. During
the adolescence stage the abuse can make more of an impact on the molding of the serial killers
personality. Modern serial killers are a product of their environment; factors such as; physical and
sexual abuse, bad parenting, and poor education made them become the modern physcopathic killers
of their time. In my first heading I talk about serial killers most common traits. These traits include;
wetting the bed, physical abuse, emotional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
New studies show that bed wetting can be related to arson and animal cruelty in some way. 57% of
serial killers have been known to wet the bed until and unusually advanced age. Bed wetting is a
very common thing for a child to go through at a young age in my opinion, but when a parent puts
too much negative emphasis on the act it can become social debilitating for the development of the
child. In media the stereo typical serial killer is thought of as this child that is isolated from the other
children in the classroom. What media does not depict it's the causes of the isolation such as;
moving around a lot, malfunctioning parent child relationship, or the child has been put into a foster
home at a young age. Lack of ability to hold a relationship can cause numerous problems later on in
adult life such as; not being able to hold a job, not being able to sustain a long–term relationship,
having issues with fitting into the social "norm". when not being able to develop healthy
relationships with other companions is can lead to the child and their adult outcome, becoming
involved in theft, arson, and assault. Hostility, aggression, and complete disregard for human rights
can be an emotional outcome due to isolation as a child (Barnard, 10 Most Common Traits of Serial
Killers). So in the end whose fault is it really the parent and the peers or the actual genetics of the

Serial Killers Vs Serial Killers
There are many different people in the United States. Many people follow the rules and regulations
that were implemented through the laws of being an American citizen, but there are many people
who do not follow these laws and regulations. People such as the horrid serial killers that live among
us and some even living incarcerated in prisons all across the country. A serial killer is described "as
a person who murders three or more people in a period of over a month, with 'cooling down' time
between murders" (Serial Killers Vs. Mass Murderers). One question being; were killers born with a
sense of killing, or did they learn how to become killers over time? Many speculations come from
all different kinds of people, but are serial killers born the way they are?
One side of this argument is that all serial killers are raised in such a manner that causes them to
commit murders. Donald Henry Gaskins is one serial killer that many believe committed his crimes
based on the way his family raised him. Gaskins mother Eulea Parrott otherwise known as Molly
got pregnant at the age of fourteen when she has sex with "Mr. Gaskins, a wealthy, well–known
neighbor of Molly, who loved to gamble and drink... he paid Molly $1 for sex several times a week"

What triggers a person to commit murder?
Murder, with the word by itself it has such power. We have over 150 people getting killed annually
because of murders, but why? How is it possible for someone to have the heart to murder someone
without any moral guilt? What is their motive? There are people out there who just think murderers
are completely insane, but in my opinion there has to be much more for someone to just forget the
value of human life. My claim is that there is a deeper understanding in murderers, but there are
many people who are completely against that. Yes, I believe there are people who are psychology
insane but there are some people who are made into murderers. In reality, we can probably prevent
most murders from happening. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We spoke about how child abuse and neglect can turn someone into different types of murderers, but
what must happen to the brain itself when someone kills? As Jeffrey Kluger says in TIME magazine,
"There's a lot of neuroscience and moral juggling behind the decision to take a life." Studies in this
article show people going into an imaging test of some people killing an innocent citizen and
another killed an enemy soldier. The idea being who will feel remorse in the end? Of course, more
people felt guilt for killing an innocent citizen rather than the enemy soldier. Now with this test, try
to put together a murder killing their first person without feeling remorse. You hear many
interviewings on the news, from psychologist with murderers saying they do not feel guilty for their
actions; they must've have a life changing event to allow them to think their actions are permissible.
What I believe is that nobody is born purely evil, there has to be an event that allows them to have a

This serial killer was chosen because this serial killing pair is the most infamous English serial
killers duo in the 1990s. Fred and Rosemary West were not convicted of all the murders they
participated in; however, they were sentenced to life imprisonment. Also, this case is interesting
because Rosemary West, to this day, does not claim to know anything about the murders even
though she has victims that survived her attacks and have spoken against her in court. These serial
killers have been covered by the media. In England, the West house was torn down and a walkway
was put in it's place to keep followers of these serial murderers away from the house that many
young women died in. There are many news stories, movies, articles, documentaries about these
serial killers including the shows: Prime Suspect, Law and Order: SVU, and Appropriate Adult
(Flowers 2014). Fred and Rosemary West were covered in the mass media because they killed over
ten young women in their home and those who were a part of the West's sentencing believe that
Rosemary West played more of a part in the serial murders that Fred West. However, in the 1990s,
women were still not seen of being capable of gruesome murders such as these; therefore, Rosemary
West was almost not charged with a large number of the murders because they believed at the time
that she was coerced into killing the young women alongside Fred West. That was true until they

four things occur; they are caught, they die, they kill themselves, or they burn out. Who would want
to stop the death penalty if it deters from such horrific crimes? Once a serial killer, always a serial

Serial Killers And The Serial Killer
"The serial killer 'is an entirely different criminal,' "The term serial killer is misleading on the
ground that each murder is intended to be the last." We see them as a figure of "the dark side of
human potential," but they believe they're "on a heroic quest for the biggest score possible" They
believe they are "the archetypal figure of impurity, the representative of a world which needs
cleansing." However, society knows that serial killers are not heroes, and they're not cleansing the
world. "The figure of the serial killer is violent impurity personified, and it is a construction that
necessitates figures of violent purity to confront it." While it can be argued whether having mental
disorders should prevent a serial killer from being capitally punished, it is proven that many serial
killers suffer from "paranoid schizophrenia, manic–depressive psychosis, or psychopathology." It's
even said that "this crime is actually a form of disease. Its carriers are serial killers who suffer from
a variety of crippling and eventually fatal symptoms, and its immediate victims are the people struck
down seemingly at random by the disease carriers." Serial killers usually have a stressor in their life
that makes them start killing, and when they do "homicidal mania becomes 'a necessity... linked to

Serial Killer Sociology
The idea of serial killers has intrigued us all. today's society profits off them with new television
series and biographies of our most infamous killers. Psychologists and sociologists alike want
answers as to what makes a serial killer kill. Scientists may explore serial killing through a
sociological lens to see if there have been any findings to predispositions of serial killers due to
social circumstances. This way, they may have an advantage to preventing serial killers from
developing. While exploring this, it will be necessary to determine the issues with defining serial
killing and exploring different models that pertain to the research. In the end, the goal is to clarify
findings, compart test results, and determine if a sociological ... Show more content on

The first lens a sociologist will look through is the mass media and its relations to society. A
growing population with unlimited access to meeting strangers become the norm. After the
industrial revolution there was less of a need for farm workers and more of a need for factory
workers. As society began to urbanized, people were forced to create and live in a population where
one did not know the name of the person living next to them. Kevin Haggerty And Ariane Ellerbrok
believed that this rushed movement of strangers "...proved to be a key precondition for the
emergence of serial murder, given that a defining attribute of serial killers is that they prey on
strangers..."( Haggerty,Ellerbrok 1). As time went on and technology began to develop into more
complex networks, the Internet paved the way in enabling you to meet strangers through chat rooms
and social media. The Internet became a tool of serial killers as a way of meeting victims and having
a disguise. The World Wide Web also made serial killing a famous act. T.V shows, books, and
movies all get money by glorifying serial killers. "Actresses like charlize theron, who played
wuornos in the movie monster, earn" ( Keya, M.A., 25) and "popular movies and books such as
"Silence Of The Lambs," "Kiss The Girl," and "Taking Lives"" (Krueger 3) have dramatically over–
idolized serial killers and their actions. Dexter Morgan, a charming yet twisted young character from
a T.V. series has been admired for being a "vigilante killer... who (is), "taking out the trash" of
society" ( Keya, M.A., 9). Killers such as Jeffrey Dahmer, who committed the rape, murder, and
dismemberment of seventeen men and boys between 1978 and 1991, and Jack The Ripper, who
killed and mutilated prostitutes in East London in 1888 , have become common household names.
That is the next lens they look through, the household. We will often look to a killer's childhood to

The topic of serial killers was chosen for my research topic because of my interest in the
psychological of why someone would murder another. This topic was then refined to researching 10
serial killers and identifying why they become serial killers, through a mind map that focused on the
idea whether serial killers are born as killers or made into one. This therefore led to the overall
research question for this project which is: "Do circumstances create a serial killer or are they born
that way?" in order to answer this question the following five focus questions have been created.
1. Who are the ten most infamous caught serial killers?
2. What does the psychological evaluation reveal about these 10 serial killer's personality?
3. Are there any common psychological, mental and emotional traits found amongst these 10 serial
killers?
4. Were there any childhood or adulthood triggers that caused these 10 serial killers to kill?

Life Of A Serial Killer
As members in today's data fixated society, we are always being reminded of the horrific acts that
people nowadays are able to commit. One watches the news and catches wind of a homicide, or
reads an interesting book about killers. The only time that the New York Daily News has ever
surpassed the New York Times, was the point at which the feature showed the true identification of
Jack the Ripper (Landau, Harding, 2014). As you wade through these odds and ends of reality, one
cannot resist the urge to be unearthed by the idea, what makes a person effectively commit such
repulsive acts? There have been wide ranges of studies done with expectations of discovering an
answer. For a crime as heinous as serial murder, there are two primary theories. The key notion is
that serial killing is brought about by a variation from the norm in the frontal lobe area of the ...

A main factor that differentiates serial murderers from other homicidal offenders is their reasons to
commit such horrendous crimes. Usually, homicidal killers kill because of complex conflicts
between families, mobsters, couples, and friends or because money problems. "A psychokiller, I
should make clear, is not a regular murderer. A murderer has a vendetta, a nice specific personal
thing against his victim" (Serial Killers). However, very different from normal killers, serial
murderers are motivated by compulsion and have the urge to slaughter other humans. Because of
their sexual urges and their desire to satisfy those urges, serial killers most of the time victimize
individuals that they do not know. Grover Godwin, a serial killer profiler, ... Show more content on

Dissimilarly to the movie Silence of The Lambs, in which Dr. Hannibal Lector is a very educated,
intellectual, and has an IQ of above average, nearly all of serial murders are uneducated or do not
have high school diploma. In Godwin's study, he reported that out of one hundred and seven serial
murderers only sixteen percent of them attended college and only 4 percent of them finished college
(Serial Killers). Although most serial killers might not have had formal education, they are clever
enough to not leave any evidence of their crime that can lead the police to them. "Many of them are
exceptionally skillful in their presentation of self, so much so that they are beyond suspicions and
thus are difficult to apprehend" (Serial Killers). Movies have distorted the idea of serial killers and
created a stereotype that serial killers have hockey mask on their faces and carry chain saws.
However, the truth is that serial killers are skilled at hiding their true selves and their terrifying
thoughts, which help them fit in with the society. These killers are very cunning that they lure their
prey by making them feel safe and secure but in reality they lead them into a trap. When they finally
have their victims under their control, they show their true selves and kill the victims with any
available weapons (Serial Killers). These acts are due to impulses and their desire for thriller and

Characteristics Of Serial Killers
The over dramatization of serial killers, and their apprehension has evidently distorted the facts.
Civilian's enthrallment with serial killers has both desirable and undesirable social effects (Gibson,
2006). Although all serial killers share similar characteristics they behave identically to everyone
else. Civilians have been misled to believe that serial killers are different from the rest of human
kind, that they possess distinguishable characteristics that can be readily identified (Haggerty, 2009).
Many have pondered the real reasons why these individuals have turned to killing. The elucidation
lies within the serial killer, specifically the development from birth to adulthood (Leyton, 1987). The
behaviours that serial killers express ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Organised serial killers are highly intelligent and conniving, acting like every other individual, often
leaving precise clues for detectives; they make elaborate plans of killing, usually using a murder
weapon, and don`t leave evidence to incriminate them (FBI, 2012). The organised serial killers are
known to be psychopaths being able to differentiate between right and wrong. Whilst, disorganised
serial killers are known to be psychotic and are usually isolated from society (Carter, 2004). These
individuals have low self–esteem and feel sexually and interpersonally inadequate (Ressler, 1986).
Killing for no particular reason whenever an opportunity arises; their crime scenes display more
haphazard behaviour, as they leave clues, making it easy for them to be apprehended (Geberth,
1990; Geberth and Turco, 1997). Serial killers are "not born instead they are victims of abuse and
dysfunction that has led to becoming loners who find happiness in youthful fantasies that turn them
into killers once faced with a personal crisis" (Mofina, Ressler, 1993). In addition serial killers have
detrimental relationships with their mothers. Theses volatile relationships nurtured the serial killers
to loathe females (Moesch 1998). The mothers were controlling, overprotective, and both physically
and emotionally abusive (Moesch 1998). Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis treatment
suggests that the young children would attempt to reach autonomy with their mothers; however,
most were unsuccessful, causing them to suffer from psychological torment (Moesch 1998).
Empirically supported, this theory suggests that 66% of known serial killers were cultivated in
homes with dominant and neglectful mothers (Moesch 1998).

factors, suffering trauma

The Death Of Serial Killers
In recent discussions of serial killers, a controversial issue has been whether they were born being
the killer that they are or if it is impacted by the way that they grew up. On the one hand, some
argue that serial killers are influenced by things in their lives that cause them to become these
guiltless killers. From this perspective, porn and violence in the home are big factors in what people
believe to be influencing these people. On the other hand, however, others argue that these people
are born this way and the way they grow up has no influence. In the words of Helen Morrison, one
of these view's main proponents, "No matter what country, ethnicity, race, socioeconomic
background, education, familial background, they are all exactly the same." According to this view,
despite if they are born this way or grew up being influenced by things, they are all the same. In
sum, then, the issue is whether they are born this way or if their lives are influenced. My own view
has not been solidified at the moment. Reading and researching all this stuff has not yet brought me
to my own conclusion which I believed it would do right away. Though I concede that violence in
the home and pornography do influence people in different ways, I still maintain that a lot of people
grow up with these factors and there are plenty of these people who do not kill anyone and do not
have any serial killer tendencies. For example, Ted Bundy's growing up was talked about quite a bit

Criminal psychologists have been examining into cases if serial killers are born or made. In most of
these cases, many psychologists have considered multiple clues or indications that lead to why
people become these ruthless murderers. What appeared to be a common factor is childhood abuse.
Mostly the reason why childhood abuse has appeared to be a noticeable element to consider is
because of how serial killers bring up that they have been abused as a child. Because of this, many
claim that childhood abuse is to be a blaming aspect of the creation of these killers. Now, many have
disagreed and will continue to disagree that there is no link between childhood abuse and serial
killers. At first glance, it will not seem that there is a link, but ... Show more content on

SERIAL KILLERS
A serial killer is a person whom everybody knows as a friend, a lover or even a father but no one
knows about his killer instinct until it's to late. Serial killers have plagued this country and others for
many years. They are hard to find and virtually undetectable until they start murdering the innocent.
Serial killers are usually young, white males who are quite intelligent and often come from broken
homes. They may have been abused either physically or sexually during childhood and they have
serious personality defects, such as low self–esteem and a lifelong sense of loneliness. Although no

Two FBI agents conducted a study of serial killers over an eight–year period and came up with two
distinct types of personalities, the organized and the disorganized serial killer (Clark, p. 206). An
organized killer will most likely be a highly intelligent, skilled, socially competent individual who

Disorganized serial killers are almost a complete opposite of organized serial killers. 'They are of

They are often the youngest or younger children in the family. They were abused or very sternly

Female Serial Killers
Not many people know that women can murder others, let alone, be serial murderers. What has been
perceived generally in our societies is that women are the creation of God who sacrifice for others
and care selflessly. It is the males who are seen as the abusers, the ones who murder, kill others for
their selfish motives. That is true but not completely. The majority of people who abuse, or kill are
males. However, women are also seen as doing these acts so anonymous to their "feminism".
Women also murder, and surprisingly, "they can be even more dangerous than males" (Deborah,
2000). My research paper will prove that women can be murderers and some can be really brutal.

What is the purpose behind the murders?
Women kill largely for instrumental reasons such as monetary gain rather than affective reasons
such as achieving motional satisfaction. Absent is the presence of sexual fantasy as a motivating
factor (Richard N.Kocsis, 2007). A survey of known serial killers worldwide reveals that 41% of
homicidal women kill for profit or greed. Female serial killers who victimize their own children and
other relatives sometimes have a much stranger motive than profit. According to psychiatrists, some
of them become addicted to the sympathetic attention they receive after the death of their loved ones
(Micheal & John, 2008).

The Role Of Female Serial Killers On The Mind Of A Serial...
Delving into the mind of a serial killer can be a dark and twisted place to go, but also very
interesting and intriguing at the same time. While the majority of serial killers in history have been
men, women have also had their place in this type of crime. Often our first question when we hear
the news of a new serial killer, our first question is "who is he?" But as we will examine through the
research for this paper, women can also be geared to not only kill but to do it over and over again.
Although women historically are not as abundant as their male counterparts, there is quite a list of
female serial killers. Two of those women are Aileen Wuornos, who has been deemed the first
female serial killer, and Dorothea Puente.

The Serial Killer's Escape from Humanity
The serial killer is a person that goes on to kill multiple people over a period of time. There has been
many serial killers throughout history. The serial killer is a means of escape from human
civilization. A human civilization that deals with social norms, responsibilities, and dullness of life.
First of all, the serial killer is a means of escape from human civilization's social norms. Social
norms are the expected ways people are supposed to act around other people. They are unwritten
laws people try to follow every day. The serial killer escapes and defies these social norms by living
a life of their own. This can be examined very well in Rob Zombie's 2005 film The Devils Rejects.

well in Bruce A. Evans' 2007 film Mr. Brooks. Earl brooks is a known businessman. His life is

can see escapes human civilization's social norms, responsibilities, and dullness of life. The serial
killer is clearly a means of escaping human civilization. An alternative reason for escaping human
civilization can be because of peoples mind set, be away from big groups, and even escape

this country and others for many years. They are hard to find and virtually undetectable until they
start murdering the innocent. Serial killers are usually young, white males who are quite intelligent
and often come from broken homes. They may have been abused either physically or sexually
during childhood and they have serious personality defects, such as low self–esteem and a lifelong
sense of loneliness. Although no two serial killers are alike, they all fit this description somewhat. In
the sixth edition of Crime and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The more sadistic of the killers who may use a video camera to tape their victims so that they can
relay them to relive the crime over and over again in their minds. “The anger of a serial
killer usually surfaces when the killer is in his mid to late 20’s and the first murder is usually
the result of a “precipitating stressor” some event that pushes him over the
edge” (Clark, p. 206). Mass killers tend to be white, middle class, middle aged males. After
they kill their first victim, they may experience some remorse but after they kill again their remorse
dwindles and they enjoy the kill and the high that goes along with it. Once the murder hunt begins, it
never ends until the killer is caught, letting him operate for years without being detected. No one
knows what causes these men to kill, they don’t know themselves. Jack Levin notes
“the mass killer may be depresses, disillusioned, despondent, or desperate, during the kill
but afterwards act like nothing has ever happened” (Douglas, p. 137). A serial killer may
have a fascination with law enforcement. Some serial killers will get involved in an investigation by
going to bars where cops gather to try to overhear the cases details, some may monitor the
investigation of their own crimes and some give bogus to throw off police (Clark, p. 206). When
they are part of their own investigation, it allows them to keep extending control over their

Serial Killer Vs Mass Killer

  • 1. Serial Killer Vs Mass Killer Over the course of the semester we discussed many things in this class one being serial and mass murderers. Under that umbrella we discussed the differences between the two, the victims they may attack, the reasons why they kill, personal backgrounds, and explanations to why they kill. At the end of this course we were asked to pick a type of killer and explain what it is we learned from them. For this paper I chose to talk about serial killers. The killers I chose to discuss are Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka but we will get to them later on. Serial killers differ from mass murderers because serial killers kill over a period of time with a cooling off period whereas mass murderers have one big killing with four or more victims and no cooling ... This caused Paul to beat/harm his girlfriends he had in college and to eventually become a sexual sadist. Paul was a bright young man who graduated from the university of Scarborough. Neither killer had a criminal record prior to their convictions stated above. I classified each serial killer as both organized and disorganized. I say that because DNA was left at the scene of their crimes but they strategically lured and disposed of their victims. Over the course of the semester we have discussed many types of killers such as partner groups, serial, and mass murderers. We discussed why killers kill and we also discussed specific killers. I have grown to enjoy the criminology of killers. I have also learned that we can't really screen for certain types of killers due to self –fulfilling prophecy. I chose the Ken and Barbie killers because I wanted to know why certain killers engage in relationships and kill at the same time. I wanted to know what the purpose was of that type of dominance and I was able to find ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Stereotypes Of Serial Killers Unlike murderers, a psychopath's urge to kill does not come from average family affairs, financial disputes, or disagreements in relationships. Psycho killers are driven by a desire to kill that is often sexual and causes them to murder strangers and it is imperative to determine what makes a serial killer so distinct from homicidal murderers. It has been proved that genetics is the key role in determining who becomes a serial killer while criminologists and psychologists argue that abuse and abandonment create the foundation in which serial killers grow into vicious murders. The largest difference between a murderer and a serial killer is their desire to kill. "Unlike that of a normal homicide, serial killers are only driven by instinct ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Surroundings, behaviour, childhood experiences and frequent traumas are imperative factors during the early stages of one's life due to how it may affect them as a person. "Naturally we are all born with a different genetic make up but many argue that differences in DNA do not create a psychokiller. The main focus of many criminologists and psychologists are the origins and the surroundings of these killers childhood" ("Serial"). While growing up, potential serial murderers exposed to abuse or traumas will seek for emotional relief through acts of violence such as harming a younger sibling or animals. "Serial killers generally seek control over the life of another, and at a younger age a small animal is the only type of creature they will be able to fully dominate" ("Early")". By hurting someone smaller and more vulnerable to seek comfort and emotional release, the potential serial killer will feel in control and open to exert dominance. "Victims of abuse and rejection, serial killers find comfort in their fantasies and dreams that take them into a realm that only they can control" ("Serial")". Control and dominance is a common ... • 5. Serial Killer Traits Serial Killers: Genetically or Environmentally Engineered? According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the definition of serial murder is "the unlawful killing of two or more victims by the same offender(s), in separate events" ("Serial Murder"). There are many definitions for serial murder, but ultimately it narrows down to the amount of killings and how spaced out the events are. A serial killer is a very organized planner, often waiting for the right moment or the right person before they carry out their next malicious attack. Other common traits include abusive and neglectful childhoods, mental disorders or psychopathic traits, normal to high IQ's, they are "cunning and manipulative," have an inability to feel regular emotions like ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It makes sense that a child with a very abusive, neglectful life is easier to succumb to the reality of serial murder. What about the serial killers who had a somewhat normal childhood? Charles Manson, an infamous leader of the cult that carried out the Tate/LaBianca killings which included the deaths of seven wealthy Hollywood residents, is also believed to be involved in a total of thirty– five murders. This personification of evil grew up as one might expect. He was neglected by his young, alcoholic and prostitute of a mother and lived his life on the street or behind bars for silly crimes. It makes sense that Manson turned out the way he did. It's awful, but it makes sense. On the other hand, there is Jeffrey Dahmer, whom murdered seventeen males in accordance to rape, dismemberment, necrophilia, and cannibalism. Dahmer had a pretty standard childhood. He lived under a stable roof with two parents and was described as joyful child. When Dahmer received surgery for a double hernia at an early age was when his parents noticed a shift in behavior. Around the age of ten to fifteen, when his parents marriage ended, sprouted another change in Dahmer. He became socially withdrawn, started having strange interests in dead animals, and became a heavy drinker. His mannerisms continued to negatively falter from that point. He committed his first murder when he was only eighteen years old. It seems unusual that a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Serial Killers Dennis Nilson stated "a mind can be evil without being abnormal". If this is the case, then what makes a serial killer tick? The definition of a serial killer is; a series of two or more murders committed as separate events usually, but not always, by one offender standing alone. (Brookes, 1988) Over the years, many murderers have been given this term. From the early days of Jack the Ripper, to the most recently publicized case of "the sniper", all have different motives and reasons to the crimes that they commit. Most of the serial killers suffer from mental illness/addictions or have had traumatic life experiences. This is not always the case though; some can also be racially motivated. Both killers still have pending trials within other states. Forensic Science Forensic and DNA casework has been a major player in catching these cold blooded killers. Since most investigators have to work from clues, they rely on these sources to lead them in the right direction. Many findings such as, blood, weapons, hair, or any source of DNA can help put the puzzle pieces of these cases together. This has solved many cases, and is a strong piece of evidence in the judicial system. Muhammad & Malvoy, "The Snipers" In the sniper case, an anonymous caller (believed to be Muhammad) told a priest to inform police to investigate a robbery in Alabama. When the police looked into the robbery, part of the evidence Alabama's police force had found were a set of fingerprints from a magazine. Further investigation proved these prints belongs to Malvo, who was already on file. Since Malvo lived with Muhammad for a year in Washington, they were both linked together. After police knew about Muhammad, they discovered he purchased an old police car in New Jersey. After announcing to the public the type of vehicle to search for, it led to the capture of the two killers. • 9. Characteristics of a Serial Killer In the sick minds of those who murder, pain and death are twisted into a passion to kill. Unlike a "normal" individual, serial killers rely on murdering to fulfill their craving of their gruesome thrills and addiction. Most of society incorrectly views serial killers because of how they are portrayed on television. For example, Dexter is a handsome serial killer who does lead a normal life but, he takes it upon himself to rid all of the "bad guys" in the world in order to accomplish his need to kill. Then there's Freddy Krueger, he gets revenge and kills people in their dreams, causing their death in the real world as well. Michael Meyers and Dr. Hannibal Lecter are more examples of infamous serial killers. All of these exaggerated serial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I didn't know what underlay social interactions.I don't feel guilty for anything. I feel sorry for people who feel guilt." Ted Bundy was attractive, intelligent and had a future in politics, he was also one of the most prolific serial killers in U.S. history (Brogaard and Marlow). Furthermore, most serial killers have a history of neglect, injury or abuse in their childhood. Such as, Jeffrey Dahmer, whose mother was ill during her pregnancy. In his early adolescence, he was then sexually molested by a neighbor boy in rural Bath Township. Then later on down the road, his parents went through a rough divorce which he took to heart greatly, as they both left him out of a decision in choosing a home because he had recently turned 18 years old. Feeling insecure and abandoned, Dahmer began experimenting with fire, and collecting road kill and stripping the animal carcasses and saving the bone. A serial killer is not born with a desire to kill, it's their morbid experiences early on in their life that cause psychological damages that drive them to power and the thirst for murdering (Jeffrey Dahmer). • 11. Serial Killer : Serial Killers According to an FBI study, "there have been approximately 400 serial killers in the United States in the past century, with anywhere from 2,526 to 3,860 victims (Hickey). No one really understands serial killers. It is actually quite difficult to comprehend how the mind of a serial killer works. Some believe that a serial killer feels strongly attracted by a specific physical characteristic in the victim. It could be his or her appearance: facial features, clothes, or even personality. On the other hand, many individuals believe the connection is within an ethnic group, gender, or age. As for serial killers not only do psychological components contribute to their upbringing but also the environmental atmosphere. Although society is intrigued by the so–called celebrity monster the prevalent information and media coverage is accountable for the real–life serial killer transfiguration. The topic of serial killers to an extent has caused pivotal debates even among countries. It consistently questions the jurisdictional matters. Serial killers are linked within the dark nature of society and its irreversible craving for grotesque news. The fixated obsession with serial killers in popular culture is quite an interchangeable topic. The central question that is consistently debated among nations is why does society find serial killers so fascinating? • 13. Serial Killers : A Serial Killer Essay Introduction Crimes and criminals define not only places, but certain time periods. Serial killers are usually the ones that individuals tend to remember the most. An individual is considered a serial killer when they murder three or more individuals during a period of time with a cooling off period between each crime (Frailing & Harper, 2016). The purpose of this paper is to discuss one of the most controversial and yet famous serial killer, Theodore Robert Bundy. Something interesting that attracts the attention of most towards him is the fact that he was an unexpected face for a serial killer. The fact that he was handsome, intelligent, integrated into his community and with a bright future ahead of him made him an unexpected suspect during the investigation. Background Theodore Robert Bundy, best known as Ted Bundy, was born on November 24, 1946, to Louise Cowell. He was born in a home for unmarried women and raised by his grandparents as parents and his mother as a sister. Ted Bundy murdered beautiful young women during the 1970s and 1980s. He confessed to killing 36 females, but before his death, he hinted of killing more (Ramsland, 2013). According to the New York Times article posted on January 25, 1989, he would target campuses in the look for females that attracted his interest. • 15. Female Serial Killers : A Serial Killer Essay Female Serial Killers For the most part the domain of serial homicide is ruled by men. There is however some females that has and can be serial killers. According to Bartol & Bartol (2005) there have been at thirty six female serial killers throughout the United States. In general society we do not like to believe that women are capable of committing such acts, but as we continue to alter our views, moral, and beliefs of women's equality and feminism there is room for women to be just as likely to become serial killers. As long as the conditions and environment that facilitate such behavior allows for it. Women who become serial killers usually kill for different reasons than their male counterparts. Their overall motives vary from each female serial killer, but generally they kill for "...purpose of comfort..." like money, insurance, etc... (Holmes &Holmes, 1991). Female serial killers usually end up killing known individuals that have some type of relationship that is not to say that female serial killer won't kill strangers. One third of female serial killers kill strangers (Holmes & Holmes, 1991). Although not as well–known there are infamous female serial killers throughout our history and will likely be more in the future. • 17. Serial Killers in the World Overview In the 1980s serial killers were understood to be a new development, a phenomenon frequently accredited to the excesses of American culture. It was a decade of change, one of freedom and great music. It was also a decade that brought the shock and fear of serial killers. Today it seems as if all societies have serial killers. People in today's society are left with questions such as: Who are they? Why are they so different? Why do they commit such horrific crimes? There are many theories that psychologists and sociologists have researched but found no definite answers. The Bureau of Justice Statistics partnership with MINCAVA reported that, between 1976 and 1994 there were an estimated 405,089 murders in the United States. Of these, the circumstances surrounding the murder are known in 317,925, or 78.5%. Among the cases with known circumstances, an estimated 4,807, or 1.5%, were classified as involving rape or another sex offense (Greenfeld 1997). Though the vast majority of violent sex offending involves males assaulting female victims, females account for a small percentage of known offenders, and males account for a small percentage of victims (Greenfeld, 1997). Serial killers are a disturbing piece of the puzzle of society that we must figure out to save the lives of the public in the future. Although the term serial killer loosly means killing serveral people by different means, there are those who are indeed survivors of these horrific acts and live to tell ... • 19. Essay on Serial Killers Serial Killers Serial killers kill because of three patterns we see develop throughout their lives. These patterns are the development of youthful characteristics and habits, abusing events in their lives, and the final push. To be qualified as a serial killer one must murder more than three victims, one at a time, in a relatively short time period. The most common serial killers are white, heterosexual, sexually frustrated, young adult males with low self–esteem. Lester Ballard, the main character in Child of God, by Cormac McCarthy, displays these patterns as I have found it described in texts on serial killers. The earliest warning signs of serial killers can be traced back to their childhood. It is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many of these behaviors individually are expected of children. Some on the other hand, such as self–mutilation, cruelty to children, and convulsions, are not and are quite shocking to us. Lester Ballard displays many of these symptoms in the novel. For example as a child, Lester lost a softball and forced a younger boy to go get it by punching him in the face. The top three most reported behaviors are daydreaming, compulsive masturbation, and isolation. Daydreaming seems like a healthy, normal phase in every child's life, but this behavior actually makes sense for serial killers. The reason is that one of the most important components to the creation of a serial killer is fantasy. The killings are usually part of a complicated fantasy that builds to a climax at the moment of their deadly outburst (Serial Killer Info Polls). The creation of this fantasy starts as a child when the child is frequently left alone for long periods of time. This isolation bores the child and they resort to their minds for company. We can all remember the days of imagining our knight in shining armor coming to the rescue, or pretending to have immense strength, like the Incredible Hulk or Superman, to help them escape from any situation. In the cases of serial killers this fantasy/daydream world has been taken to an extreme. Masturbation begins during these fantasies and contributes much to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Serial Killers : A Serial Killer To begin, one must understand a serial killers background to get an understanding of how childhood trauma could lead to their need to kill. Although there are no exact factors that would absolutely cause a child to grow up into a serial killer, research found by Laurence Miller in "Serial killers: II. Development, Dynamics, and Forensics," suggest that there are several common factors found in multiple serial killers' childhoods. For example, some of the leading childhood characteristics found among serial killers include being adopted, being the sons of a prostitute, and have underwent sever physical or sexual abuse (Miller, 2013, p.13). This demonstrates that such experiences, at a young age, can be very traumatic and create this need of comfort that most serial killers satisfy through the murdering of multiple innocent individuals. However, the most shocking yet prevalent form of abuse comes from the mothers. This can be noted as Miller states that an increasing amount of serial killers had, "...intensely ambivalent, smothering relationships with their mothers that were characterized by both maternal abuse and sexual attraction to the mother (Miller, 2013, p.13). Miller also noted that many of these individuals came from dysfunctional families that indeed had a history of either psychiatric disorders, substance abuse, or legal problems (Miller, 2013, p.13). • 23. The Characteristics Of Serial Killers "The Killer Clown," is a nickname many won't forget. Throughout the 1970's, this man quietly rampaged the streets of a suburb in Chicago, kidnapping young men and shattering the lives of their families. He carried out his crimes until he was captured in the late '70s. The killer clown was revealed to be the man known as John Wayne Gacy. His case was very unique. He struggled with his sexuality and even had an alter ego known as "Pogo the Clown" (Morrison). According to Gacy, this alter ego controlled who he was and forced him to kill. Cases like Gacy's is where the question of insanity appears. This has led many forensic psychologists to raise the question of if there is really something wrong with the minds of serial killers. Even though the topic of serial killers has become increasingly popular, there are some that still believe in the traditional stereotype of a serial killer: sexually motivated to murder as many women as possible. However, they are much more complicated than that. Serial killers have been misconceived for centuries; moreover, they have been plastered with labels such as insane or animals. Thus, studies are being conducted and articles are being written to inform the public that there might, and is more to serial killers than what people are led to believe. There are exceedingly particular traits that separate serial killers from other murderers, and the complex ways their mind's function goes far beyond society's common misconceptions of who they are ... • 25. Serial Killer : Serial Killers What is a serial killer? Serial killers are very sick and distraught compared to others. As indicated by the Vancouver Sun, a serial killer is characterized as somebody who is responsible for more than three killings over a period that than traverses over one month. In 2005 the fbi changed it to at least two killings with no reference to intention or time span. Generally, serial killers murder for some kind of mental benefit. Serial Killers can come in all shapes and sizes: don 't be tricked by moxy, charm, and attractiveness. The MO is basically the way the predator commits the crime. While the MO tells us something about how he did it, the signature gives us some insight into why.The signature is a ritual, something the subject does intentionally for emotional satisfaction. The MO could be changed throughout the time of the killings. Ted Bundy and Gary Ridgway are two serial killers with some similarity in their style but different MO's. Known as the Green River Killer, Gary Ridgway is responsible for at least 49 murders in Washington state before he was caught in 2001.Between 1982 and 1998, he picked up young women many of them were said to be alleged prostitutes or runaways. Many disagree as to what the legal definition of a serial murder, which is, "[t]he unlawful killing of two or more victims by the same offender(s), in separate events. (Morton et al. 9). There is certainly not any dispute that there have been both male and female serial killers. Most of the research and documentation is specifically aimed around male serial killers. Over all, there are not a large amount of female serial killers, so there has not been as much research done about them; yet there are numerous documented cases of female serial killers. Male and female serial killers are alike in some ways; however, they differ in many like their modus operandi (MO.), preferred victim type, and motives. Most of the research and documentation is specifically aimed around male serial killers because there have been so many. Nonetheless, there are numerous documented cases of female serial killers. In 2010, there were 356 female serial killers as opposed to 3514 male serial killers (Aamodt 4). Because there are so few female killers, there is little information about them. During the adolescence stage the abuse can make more of an impact on the molding of the serial killers personality. Modern serial killers are a product of their environment; factors such as; physical and sexual abuse, bad parenting, and poor education made them become the modern physcopathic killers of their time. New studies show that bed wetting can be related to arson and animal cruelty in some way. 57% of serial killers have been known to wet the bed until and unusually advanced age. Bed wetting is a very common thing for a child to go through at a young age in my opinion, but when a parent puts too much negative emphasis on the act it can become social debilitating for the development of the child. In media the stereo typical serial killer is thought of as this child that is isolated from the other children in the classroom. What media does not depict it's the causes of the isolation such as; moving around a lot, malfunctioning parent child relationship, or the child has been put into a foster home at a young age. Lack of ability to hold a relationship can cause numerous problems later on in adult life such as; not being able to hold a job, not being able to sustain a long–term relationship, having issues with fitting into the social "norm". when not being able to develop healthy relationships with other companions is can lead to the child and their adult outcome, becoming involved in theft, arson, and assault. Hostility, aggression, and complete disregard for human rights can be an emotional outcome due to isolation as a child (Barnard, 10 Most Common Traits of Serial Killers). Many people follow the rules and regulations that were implemented through the laws of being an American citizen, but there are many people who do not follow these laws and regulations. People such as the horrid serial killers that live among us and some even living incarcerated in prisons all across the country. A serial killer is described "as a person who murders three or more people in a period of over a month, with 'cooling down' time between murders" (Serial Killers Vs. Mass Murderers). One question being; were killers born with a sense of killing, or did they learn how to become killers over time? Many speculations come from all different kinds of people, but are serial killers born the way they are? One side of this argument is that all serial killers are raised in such a manner that causes them to commit murders. Donald Henry Gaskins is one serial killer that many believe committed his crimes based on the way his family raised him. Gaskins mother Eulea Parrott otherwise known as Molly got pregnant at the age of fourteen when she has sex with "Mr. Gaskins, a wealthy, well–known neighbor of Molly, who loved to gamble and drink... he paid Molly $1 for sex several times a week" (Donald Henry Gaskins). Fred and Rosemary West were not convicted of all the murders they participated in; however, they were sentenced to life imprisonment. Also, this case is interesting because Rosemary West, to this day, does not claim to know anything about the murders even though she has victims that survived her attacks and have spoken against her in court. These serial killers have been covered by the media. In England, the West house was torn down and a walkway was put in it's place to keep followers of these serial murderers away from the house that many young women died in. There are many news stories, movies, articles, documentaries about these serial killers including the shows: Prime Suspect, Law and Order: SVU, and Appropriate Adult (Flowers 2014). Fred and Rosemary West were covered in the mass media because they killed over ten young women in their home and those who were a part of the West's sentencing believe that Rosemary West played more of a part in the serial murders that Fred West. However, in the 1990s, women were still not seen of being capable of gruesome murders such as these; therefore, Rosemary West was almost not charged with a large number of the murders because they believed at the time that she was coerced into killing the young women alongside Fred West. • 59. The Death Of Serial Killers In recent discussions of serial killers, a controversial issue has been whether they were born being the killer that they are or if it is impacted by the way that they grew up. On the one hand, some argue that serial killers are influenced by things in their lives that cause them to become these guiltless killers. From this perspective, porn and violence in the home are big factors in what people believe to be influencing these people. On the other hand, however, others argue that these people are born this way and the way they grow up has no influence. In the words of Helen Morrison, one of these view's main proponents, "No matter what country, ethnicity, race, socioeconomic background, education, familial background, they are all exactly the same." According to this view, despite if they are born this way or grew up being influenced by things, they are all the same. In sum, then, the issue is whether they are born this way or if their lives are influenced. My own view has not been solidified at the moment. Reading and researching all this stuff has not yet brought me to my own conclusion which I believed it would do right away. Though I concede that violence in the home and pornography do influence people in different ways, I still maintain that a lot of people grow up with these factors and there are plenty of these people who do not kill anyone and do not have any serial killer tendencies. For example, Ted Bundy's growing up was talked about quite a bit while he was at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In most of these cases, many psychologists have considered multiple clues or indications that lead to why people become these ruthless murderers. What appeared to be a common factor is childhood abuse. Mostly the reason why childhood abuse has appeared to be a noticeable element to consider is because of how serial killers bring up that they have been abused as a child. Because of this, many claim that childhood abuse is to be a blaming aspect of the creation of these killers. Now, many have disagreed and will continue to disagree that there is no link between childhood abuse and serial killers. At first glance, it will not seem that there is a link, but ... According to Young (2014), Tiago stated he had a perfect childhood until he was eleven, which was the age when he was sexually abused by his neighbor, and he felt worthless. Ever since then, it would haunt him and change his perspective on people, which would soon grow to anger towards anyone. Because of this, Tiago reminisced on his anger and decided to lash it out on women for one reason, which he would be rejected constantly (Young, 2014). It only took so much anger for Tiago to use one reason to kill several women. Those who try to find the source of this anger will be lead to Tiago's exclusive encounter to sexual childhood abuse. He also tries to justify what happen to him by believing he is also a victim, just in comparison to the women he murdered (Young, 2014). Two FBI agents conducted a study of serial killers over an eight–year period and came up with two distinct types of personalities, the organized and the disorganized serial killer (Clark, p. 206). • 69. Female Serial Killers Not many people know that women can murder others, let alone, be serial murderers. What has been perceived generally in our societies is that women are the creation of God who sacrifice for others and care selflessly. It is the males who are seen as the abusers, the ones who murder, kill others for their selfish motives. That is true but not completely. The majority of people who abuse, or kill are males. However, women are also seen as doing these acts so anonymous to their "feminism". Women also murder, and surprisingly, "they can be even more dangerous than males" (Deborah, 2000). What is the purpose behind the murders? Women kill largely for instrumental reasons such as monetary gain rather than affective reasons such as achieving motional satisfaction. Absent is the presence of sexual fantasy as a motivating factor (Richard N.Kocsis, 2007). A survey of known serial killers worldwide reveals that 41% of homicidal women kill for profit or greed. Female serial killers who victimize their own children and other relatives sometimes have a much stranger motive than profit. According to psychiatrists, some of them become addicted to the sympathetic attention they receive after the death of their loved ones (Micheal & John, 2008). • 71. The Role Of Female Serial Killers On The Mind Of A Serial... Delving into the mind of a serial killer can be a dark and twisted place to go, but also very interesting and intriguing at the same time. While the majority of serial killers in history have been men, women have also had their place in this type of crime. Often our first question when we hear the news of a new serial killer, our first question is "who is he?" But as we will examine through the research for this paper, women can also be geared to not only kill but to do it over and over again. Although women historically are not as abundant as their male counterparts, there is quite a list of female serial killers. Two of those women are Aileen Wuornos, who has been deemed the first female serial killer, and Dorothea Puente. Dorothea ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While setting out her jail time, Puente began a pen pal relationship with 77–year–old Everson Gillmouth. After serving three years of her sentence, Puente was released in September of 1985, where she then moved in with Gillmouth and opened a joint bank account. Unfortunately this would not end well for him. (Crime Museum, 2016). In November '85 Puente paid her hired handy man to help her dispose of a large wooden box he had built at her request for storage, but actually contained the remains of Gillmouth. Two months later the box, with Gillmouth's remains inside, was discovered by two fishermen. The remains would not be identified as Gillmouth for three years, but during this time Dorothea Puente was cashing his pension checks and forging letters to his family members. (Criminal Museum, 2016). Over the next three years Puente would take the lives of at least nine other victims. Her crimes remained undetected until Alvaro Montoya, a mentally disabled and schizophrenic tenant of Puente's missed a scheduled meeting with his social worker. The social worker reported Montoya as a missing person. Authorities went to Puente's boarding house where Montoya was living and discovered recently disturbed soil and they unearthed 7 bodies buried in the yard. There has been many serial killers throughout history. The serial killer is a means of escape from human civilization. A human civilization that deals with social norms, responsibilities, and dullness of life. First of all, the serial killer is a means of escape from human civilization's social norms. Social norms are the expected ways people are supposed to act around other people. They are unwritten laws people try to follow every day.
