1. The monarch of the Glem
This clips key representation issue is age. Amy who is 16 was
caught discarding school by her head teacher. Her guardians
seemed to have been oblivious to this. Amy then decides to run
away.
In the first scene of the clip, you as the viewer will
instantly be able to point out the setting which is located in
the countryside. With the given wide angle shot of the scene,
you are able to see the big hills of greenery. Then it leads
you on to another wide angle shot showing people all dressed
up in dull colours. You can identify that they are working as
they all carry props around with them, such as shovels. The
dull colours could be a significance linked to their emotions
of having work.
It is easy to notice the difference between ages in this clip
because after the first scene, a girl appears to be dressed in
yellow. We later on discover that Amy is 16 and unlike anyone
else, she is the only one wearing a primary colour. Yellow can
signify innocence and as it is a primary colour, you could
that that to the fact that it can be counted as a colour for
young people.
Also, the setting for when all the adults are present shows
you that they are all situated in a farm, working; whereas
with Amy, you can see her setting located in a truck which
leads to another significance which is that the colour of the
truck was blue. Blue is another primary colour and has
connotations of pureness. This could mean that Amy is pure
herself and that she has not done anything bad. Although she
suddenly breaks that pureness as she crashes the truck into
her head teacher’s car. From there, her guardians find out
that she has been skipping school and therefore has lost her
pureness.
The dull colours that the adults wear can be significant to
camouflage meaning that they may not be so important that they
should stand out.
In the school where you see the head teacher with Amy’s
guardian, you can easily point out the difference between
social classes as the guardian wears more casual clothing
whereas the head teacher wears more formal clothing. The
setting of the school appears to look like a judge’s room
which could link to the situation and how he is explaining to
Paul (who is Amy’s guardian) what Amy has been doing. You can
tell that the setting appears like a judge’s room due to the
2. colour which are mostly browns and the props around including
old furnisher.
I have also noticed that the tone in the voices between Paul
and the head teacher is more relaxed and calm, but his tone
becomes more aggressive when he starts talking to Amy who is
obviously of younger age than the head teacher.
Later on in the clip, we see Amy situated in her bedroom where
most of her furnisher (including curtains and bed covers) are
all red. Here is another significant colour as it is also a
primary colour; although in comparison to the other colours
used in the clip, red has connotations of rebellion which
could relate to what Amy has done which was rebel from school
and her education.
You can see different props located around Amy’s bedroom. The
first props I saw were the teddy bears sitting up on her bed.
This could relate to her being childish. More props around her
room include the magazine’s laying around her bed. This is
what a typical teen would have in their room.
At the ending scene, you see Amy wearing a dull coloured
jacket just like the ones the adults were wearing. This could
represent how she has found maturity within herself.
The music to go with the clip in the background included a
variation of happy and lively music; specifically country
music was included. The country music is relevant to the
setting of the clip which is in the countryside.
The only quite upsetting music is featured right at the end
where Amy looks sympathetic towards herself in the mirror and
soon runs away. All of the settings, characters, props, sound
and camera angles are all part of the mis-en-scene included in
the clip. In the scene where Amy is about to drive the blue
truck, she pulls almost childish faces. She certainly shows a
lot more facial expressions in comparison to the other older
characters in the clip. This conveys lack of maturity as it’s
normally younger children who pull all kinds of faces but not
so much with the people around her age.
