during the Jazz Age after World War I. His use of similes add deeper imagery and to emphasize
certain descriptions that are necessary to understand in his distinctive writing style. Fitzgerald
incorporated a lot of his own personal life into his works; his struggles with alcoholism, mental
disorders and marital problems are generally thrown into almost all his novels. Many of his stories
can be read for their symbolic qualities. Therefore, F. Scott Fitzgerald was popular for using
uncommon and intricate descriptions to help the reader better grasp what is going on in the story.
When F. Scott Fitzgerald was twenty–three, he published his first novel This Side of Paradise which
tells the life of Amory Blaine from his childhood to his young adulthood who travels out to New

euphoric. This time period during the nineteenth and twentieth century was captured by numerous
artists, writers, musicians, and entertainers in their attempts to break from traditional values in what
is known as modernism. A modernist is in simple terms a rebel. One who dislikes normal
conventions and hopes to rewrite and renew societal morals. These artists were rebels with a cause
and fought to expose themselves to society. Fitzgerald is an iconic figure in modernism because he
skews the perception of reality, rejects the stereotypical traditions, and exposes people's struggles as

September 24, 1896 to Mary and Edward Fitzgerald of St. Paul Minnesota. As a child, the family
moved back and forth between Buffalo and Syracuse New York, they were dependent on his fathers'

traveling for many months, playing different shows every night would make you really realize if

word literary genius. What makes a literary genius? Though a broad term that can be applied to
many situations, a literary genius can best be described as an author who has a timeless impact on
literature with themes that resonate with every kind of person. F. Scott Fitzgerald, along with several
others, is the epitome of a literary genius. Fitzgerald's works like This Side of Paradise and Tender is
the Night are both great stories and, in a deeper and more analytical context, works that reflect the
reality of the world. The world isn't in the most ideal state, and Fitzgerald knows that. From
describing the lonesome life of wealth and riches to examining how people feel about romance,

In the novel Gatsby gives off this kind of non–alcoholic attitude by staying sober at his parties
(Fitzgerald 52). The reason he acts this way was because when Gatsby was younger he would take

In order to achieve her desires for power, Daisy portrays innocence, requiring her to take action to
preserve the image; ironically, to save the sanctity of her marriage, Daisy must forsake purity for
security. Daisy masks her true craving for power by displaying a facade of innocence. Daisy sees
herself as a higher authority, but others see this as an image of innocence. When Nick first arrives at
the Buchanan home, he immediately notices Daisy and Jordan Baker laying on a couch. Daisy
seems to be formless and unaware of everything going on around her. "The only completely
stationary object in the room was an enormous couch on which two young women were buoyed up
as though upon an anchored balloon. They were both in white" (12) Daisy appears to be above
everyone else, being "buoyed up as though upon an anchored balloon. The "enormous couch,"
represents a cloud on which she can float on without a worry in her mind. She is then described as
being "in white" which offers her an angelic–like appearance. Angels are seen as unaltered, pure
beings who live in the clouds and Daisy embodies that character. Daisy proceeds to portray her
image of innocence by her constant inaction. Daisy is described as "the most popular of all the

Money, Power, and Glory For many years girls have been taught to find true love and get married
and be happy. Happiness, something that can be so undetermined, is what one spends ones entire life
searching for. F. Scott Fitzgerald, a poetic and romantic writer, shows his definition of happiness
through every story he has written. Fitzgerald's background starts as a hopeless romantic, winning
over the heart of his wife by rewriting a novel he had previously started on. Fitzgerald's focus his
entire life was becoming something, and wanting fame. During this 20's, if one didn't have the
dazzle, and the glamour, one was nothing. Even the people that say that they don't care about all of
that want to be wanted. Fitzgerald captures the human wanting to be known and admired perfectly

material and people, it takes away from the human being making them shallow and cold.

The Characteristics Of The Jazz Style Of Ella Fitzgerald
Learning a great deal about musicality, the business side of music and how to take care of herself,
the next few years brought a great deal of success to Chick Webb and herself.
With the raise of the new jazz style, bebop, jazz music moved from the diatonic conventions of the
swing era to more chromatic harmonies, complex rhythms and more notes and chord options. This
style caught Ella's attention and during her time with the Chick Webb band, she got her start
improvising in the bop style.
Ella is said to have described the early days of the bop revolution as something of a nightmare. "I
felt that I was being left behind, and I was," she says. A few years later Ella found herself as the
guest touring with Gillespie's band. She was thrilled to listen to this new music day in and day out
on the road and quickly found she had enough musicianship and "ears" or ability to hear the
intricacies of this hipper jazz. Ella Fitzgerald became an expert with the new modern rhythms and
harmonies and her improvisation and musicianship as a singer improved drastically. Her inspirations
during this era were Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie and she was able to imitate their playing

Zelda Fitzgerald began life looking forward to what it could offer her. A popular debutante and
success at everything she had yet to try enticed her to believe that she was infallible. It was only
during her later life that she realized that life, both physically and mentally, had its breaking point.
Though many things have been blamed as the cause of her mental breakdown, there is no specific
root to her problem. Diagnosed as schizophrenic in 1930, Zelda would be condemned to spending
the rest of her life in and out of mental health facilities, the place where she would take her final
breath, killed by a fire in 1948.

Scott to stay away until her treatment was well established. Though they could not see each other
Zelda and Scott communicated through letters, and it is through these letters that Zelda's mental

Sometimes the very thing someone may be reaching for is not what it seems. The American Dream
is something that can be known as what it is for most people; a dream. In Scott F. Fitzgerald's novel
The Great Gatsby, the main character, Jay Gatsby, throws huge parties in West Egg, New York, that
many people from all over come to, in order to find his goal and to achieve his dream. Fitzgerald
portrays Gatsby's parties as a symbol of the corruption of the American Dream; the immoral actions,
shallowness of the party guests, and impossibility of his motives reveal the flaws of the American

When Gatsby finally meets Daisy after all of the lost years, he feels he no longer needs the illusions
of the parties to bring her in, so he can finally embrace his view on reality. Fitzgerald uses the
parties as a symbol of the moral debase of the 1920's, especially about the immoral actions of the
party, "One of the men was talking with curious intensity to a young actress, and his wife...appeared
suddenly at his side like an angry diamond, and hissed: 'You promised!' into his ear" (Fitzgerald 51).

middle class and the poor think and desperately want of the rich. Dan Seitler also agrees with the

This displays that the Nick, the seemingly neutral storyteller is now more tolerant towards Gatsby,
compared to the others. This creates an issue for the readers because it means that Nick is not telling
the story the way it really is, and speaking in favour of Gatsby. This is an example of how the
readers do not truly know who Nick Caraway is and uncover more information about his personality
towards the end of the novel. It proves that Nick's character is extremely vital because his opinions
shape how the story will unfold, and that his opinions affect how the story will be told. Nicks
judgments begin to show in a negative way towards Jordan, and his drinking habits begin to show

September 24, 1896. He was born in St. Paul Minnesota to Edward Fitzgerald and Mary Mcquillan.
Mary's family was an Irish–Catholic family with a little bit of money from wholesale grocers. His
father owned a wicker furniture business, which ultimately failed, so he got a job as a salesman.
