7. IOP’s Role
The eye is as a camera and a balloon
The normal range of the IOP is between 10 and 15
The high pressure kills the ganglion cells

Editor's Notes
We think our life starts with the first glimpse of light our eyes see, and with the first scream our lungs utter; but, we are wrong. Our life starts much earlier in the minds of our parents: palning our future and picking a name for us. A doctor, that what they want me to be. But all the dreams and plans in a matter of seconds, Fall a part. Because of the silent thief.
I’m certain that you are now asking yourself why I would listen to her? And what are the benefits from this presentation. The first reason is since March 2000 rising awareness about glaucoma is one of my life’s priorities. Also because of the shocking facts I have for you about glaucoma. In 2010 there were 10 million pple around the world fighting glaucoma and the number is still rising and the studies estimate that there will be 80 million in 2020
First, we will know how the eye function in order to understand what glaucoma is. Then I’ll tell you why glaucoma is a dangerous illness and the available treatment. So, let’s start
These are the basic elements we need to see. 3lywers of cells which are inside the eye ball. The optic nerve and a light vibration or in other words an object to see.
The light passes through the first lyer which is the cornea. Then the cornia reflects the tight to the second lyer which presents the lense. After that the lense sends the ligh to the last lyer which is the retina. The retina has ganglion cells. They are very sensitive to light and they convert it to electrical signal. These signals are carried by the optic nerve to the brain wher the seeing process is completed.
When we want to take a picture with our phone or a camera, we must hold the device firmly or we will end up having a shacky picture. The same is with the eye. The produces daily a certain amount of fluied so the eye functions very well. It is called intraolcular pressure or the eye pressure. The normal range is between 10 and 20. if it goes higher or lower damages the optic nerve and kills the cells. Then blindness.
After knowing glaucoma let me tell you why it is a dangerous illness. First it is asympomatic. The patient doesn’t have any symptoms till at least quarter of the nerve is damaged.
The second thing is that the patient starts losing the side vision in one eye as in the picture. Humanbeings are adaptable creatures and when we lose vision gradually. The last terrifying fact is the damaged cells can’t be gained back.
Moving to the last point talking about the available treatment. You should remember that these treatments are only to reduce the speed ot the loos of vision.
Glaucoma is a ferious illness, there is a week and a month for rising awareness but I didn’t see any movement her in Oman though lots of ppl are affected. I gave you the important information about glaucoma and I am sure that you know that the earlier detection is the better parents are in pain and children are crying. When the balloon explode you can buy a new one but when the vision is lost you can gain it back. And Dark is not good Thank you
