3. It refers to the mechanical
taking in of the food.
The normal route is through
the oral cavity or mouth.
4. It is the breakdown of large molecules
into their component parts.
1. Mechanical Digestion - physical
breakdown of food into smaller
particles
2. Chemical Digestion - accomplished
by the digestive enzymes secreted
along the digestive tract
5. The uptake of nutrient molecules in
the food.
Absorption of the final products of
digestion takes place in the small
intestine.
6. During this process,
the nutrients coming
from the food is
distributed to the
different parts of the
body.
7. It is the process by which the
waste products of digestion are
removed from the body.
Elimination of solid waste in the
form of feces.
12. The pharynx or throat
is located at the back of the
mouth.
It is about 5 to 6 inches
long.
It is the common
passageway for digestion
and respiration.
14. ESOPHAGUS
The esophagus is a muscular
tube through which food passes
from the pharynx to the stomach.
During the act of swallowing, the
bolus is transported by the
esophagus into the stomach via
wave-like contraction called
peristalsis.
16. The stomach is the expanded organ
located between the esophagus and the
small intestine.
It is a muscular, elastic, pear-shaped
organ that is about 30.5 cm long and
15.2 cm wide.
It stores the swallowed food; mixes the
food with the digestive juice it
produces; and conveys its contents
slowly into the small intestine.
18. The small intestine is
considered as the organ of
complete digestion and
absorption.
It is the longest organ of the
digestive system.
It is divided into 3 sections:
duodenum, jejunum, and ileum.
20. The large intestine or colon is
the next organ after the small
intestine.
It is about 1.5 meters long and 5 cm
in diameter.
It has 3 functions: temporary stores
fecal materials; absorbs vitamins in
the colon; and reabsorbs water from
the undigested residue.
22. The rectum is located at the end of the
large intestine.
It serves as warehouse for the undigested
residue or feces.
At the end part of the rectum is the anal
canal or anus that functions as the exit
for fecal materials.
