City Draft Riots
Throughout the United States there have been quite a number of riots in just about everywhere. Riots are typically known as noisy violent public
discordance to protest against a new government policy or law or against another group. In a society such as America it is quite the norm for
populations to take matters into their own hand and riot to stop what they believe is an injustice being done to them. Among the many riots that have
occurred in the United States, the New York City Draft riots remains the largest riot to have occurred. It also remains the worst riot to ever occur in the
city New York. (Cook 24) The Detroitrace riots are significant because it is one of the largest riots experience by Detroit. The largest experienced by
the United states in a three decade period following the East St. Louis riots in 1917. The significance of the stonewall riots is largely more obvious
than the previous two. The stonewall riots were the first major uprising by the gays and lesbians in the United States. The word stonewall has become
synonymous with the start of the lesbian and gay civil rights movement in the United States. (Carter 1) There is an abundance of research done on the
New York City draft riots, the Detroit race riots and the stonewall riots, yet to my knowledge there has been no attempt to link those three major and
effective civil rights events together.

New Mexico Penitentiary Riot
SantГ© Fe, New Mexico
The New Mexico penitentiary in south Santa Fe, New Mexico was no stranger to violence. This penitentiary has seen two riots in its past one July 19,
1922 and the other June 15, 1953, these however were nothing in comparison to the events to come. In the early morning hours of February 2, 1980
two prisoners began what would be recorded as one of the most violent prison riots in the history of the American correctional system. 33 prisoners
died, over 200 inmates were injured and 12 correction officers were taken hostage of those 12, seven were badly beaten and raped. The causes of this

The Governor, Bruce King was well aware of the conditions and issues of the prison and warnings of a prison riot went disregarded. Prisoners began
by taking control of south–side Dormitory E–2; within minutes the prisoners had taken four more officers in the dorm hostage, a fleeing officer left
keys behind which gave the inmates complete access to the main control center, inmate cells, doors and weapons. By midafternoon violent offenders
from solitary confinement had been released and the violence had gotten out of control. The prisoners had a particular area they could not access, the
protective custody area, this area held the mentally ill and vulnerable inmates it included those inmates convicted of sex crimes and yes, those labeled
snitches. Armed with blowtorches left by a construction crew, the inmates cut through the bars of the cells and in the early morning of February 3
began so did the brutal slaughter several inmates. Negotiations between inmates and authorities stalled but, eventually the inmates come up with 11
demands which included basic prison conditions like overcrowding, inmate discipline, educational services and improving food. The prisoners also
demanded to talk to independent federal officials and members of the news media. In exchange they released the 12 officers held hostage. Some
officers were badly beaten and raped but, others were protected by other

Riots During The 18th Century
During the 18th century, riots were formed a recurrent features of the social and political life in France and Berlin, when people rioted they tried to

rioters were from the mixed social groups they weren't just the underclass or lower class rioting, many were skilled artisans and respectable citizens.
(Clarke and Wood ward.2014.p.293)
Every riot has started off from someone's death which made the society angry and sad against the police and the government laws. They are angry
that they have bee categories into lower class people with less house incomes. For example we had the London riot 2011

Essay On L. A Riots Of 1992
The L.A. Riots Of 1992: My Thoughts and Perspectives The L.A. Riots is one of the massive riots in american history. The riots were caused by the
injustice beating of Rodney King by four officers. To put it in perspective, the riots happened because of racism by jury and officers. I watched a
sundance film trailer about the L.A. Riots and how koreans were affected by the riots. After watching the trailer, I decided to do research and I
learned about the deep details of how the riots happened. The L.A. Riots changed my morals on how people can be proved guilty or innocent so
easily, plus my perspectives on racism against minorities of the United States. My perspective is that police have been harassing more people of color

Years later, The L.A. Riots had stopped and people went on their lives. But the riots were never forgotten Even though the L.A. Riots affected black
americans, it also affected korean immigrants and americans. Some of the riots took place in Koreatown and Richard Rhee, a man that was involved
in the riots, was interviewed about what has the riots done to the korean community. Richard Rhee knew and saw other korean stores being
vandalized during the L.A. riots. Rhee had guns ready for the onslaught of rioters and many koreans had shotguns. Koreans made their stores into
fortresses against the rioters and they knew the police cannot help them. The attacks on Koreatown would continue for the whole riot ordel. There
were many of evenings were korean americans had to defend their stores from rioters. Protecting their shops and their families from the dangers of the
rioters. During and after the riots, the korean community and the black community would have a racial tensions for a few decades. But recently, the
tensions have been dropped after a few decade years.
Koreatown was not the first ones to be attacked by riots. Florence and Normandie Avenues were the first riots police officers had to deal with. The

The Causes Of The Stonewall Riots
In 1969 in Greenwich Village, New York, a 6 day riot took place that would launch the first Pride March and launch the Gay Rights movement as a
national movement. The conflict was started when police raided the Stonewall bar, a bar that was a safe place for homosexuals to visit, and violence
erupted between the two groups. In the end, homosexuals were granted more rights and gained more acceptance in American culture. The Stonewall
Riots took place in Greenwich Village, New York in 1969. Police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar run by the mafia, which outraged its many
patrons and the people of the village. The patrons of the bar was not the only reason the Stonewall Inn got raided. Since it was illegal to sell
alcohol to homosexuals, it was done illegally. The SLA, the state liquor authority, would not give liquor licenses to those who would sell to
homosexuals. The Stonewall Inn owner, Fat Tony, combated this problem by saying the bar was a bottle club. A bottle club was where the patrons
would bring their own bottles and get their alcohol from their privately owned stock. Violence broke out after 13 people were arrested and put into a
wagon. "People in the crowd yelled at the police to stop. The officers responded by telling them to get off the street. Someone started throwing pocket
change at the officers, and others began rocking the wagon" (Rede). Other villagers and patrons threw objects at the police, such as bricks and bottles,
and chanted protests to the

The Stonewall Rebellion Or Stonewall Riots
The Stonewall Rebellion or Stonewall Riots was a series of violent riots that took place between gay and trans activists, drag queens, and other patrons
of The Stonewall Inn against the police after a raid had been carried out by the Sixth Precinct police. The days and rebellions that followed are
monumental moments in LGBT and World history.
For New York's gay and trans communities the 1960's marks a turning point in their history; Sodomy had been reduced to a misdemeanour, with a
maximum sentence of six months in prison, the anti–gay accommodation rules of the New York State Liquor Authority had been overturned, allowing

Nevertheless, it became a nightly home to homeless youth and runaways, drag queens, people of colour, and other minorities who were often not
accepted in gay spaces. Among its patrons was African American, Trans, Gay, and AIDS activist, sex worker, anddrag queen – Martha P. Johnson. Who
would famously claim that the P. stood for "Pay it No Mind".
The Stonewall Inn had been registered as a private "Bottle Bar" which meant patrons were expected to bring their own liquor. The Genovese Family
would often bribe the Sixth Precinct to turn a blind eye to the activities occurring in inn. However, in the early hours of June 28th 1969 and readied
with a warrant for storing and selling liquor without a licence; the police prepared to raid The Stonewall Inn.
The raid began just after 3a.m, and the police found the illegal liquor and began arresting employees while the crowd booed but remained otherwise
calm. Howard Smith, a village voice reporter who stayed with the police throughout the riot reported "During the "gay power" riots at the Stonewall
last Friday night I found myself on what seemed to me the wrong side of the blue line. Very scary. Very enlightening." After arresting some of the
employees, including the bartender, doorman, and reportedly brutalising some of the patrons. The police turned their focus on those suspected in

The Causes Of The Enlightenment And The Stonewall Riots
The struggle for equality has been present in history since the dawn of time. From the Israeli struggle in their homeland during Roman rule to the
hardships faced during the Civil Rights Movement, the desire for equal rights and freedom is not a new concept. Throughout history, one can find
instances where events seem to repeat the events of the past. An instance of this is the parallel between the Enlightenment and the Stonewall Riots. Not
only is there a parallel there, the French Revolution is similar to the Stonewall Riots as well.
The Stonewall Riots were a series of riots that began on June 28th, 1969 in the early morning at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village of New York
City. Police raided the building after they discovered the bar had been serving alcohol without a license. After the arrests of the bar workers and some
of the LGBT community, bottles were thrown from those in the bar. This led to an uprising in which the police were barricaded into the establishment
and the rioters attempted to set the building on fire (which they do eventually). For the next 5–6 days, more LGBT activists would gather to protest in
the area meeting the police who tried their best to stop them. In the end, the riots ended when the New York CityRiot Police came in to control the
area. One of the survivors of the riots, Scott G. Brown, recalls the night in a Huffington Post article whi he wrote. The article stated, "The riots were a

Detroit Riots Essay
The Detroit riots occurred in the summer of 1967. The riot initially started because of race when poor African Americans got kicked out of their
houses. They started living on 12th street in Detroit. The riot started there because African Americans were fed up with the way that they were being
treated. Many years prior to the riot there were already racial issues. The government made it hard for African Americans to buy houses in the 1950s.
During that time, white people were resisting African Americans from moving into Detroit. They were gathering outside of houses owned by African
Americans until they would leave. According to Stanford, "I was blissfully unaware of the pervasive racism and resentment that was simmering in my
city" (28). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was showing even more racial issues even in the law enforcement which is supposed to protect everyone no just people of their nationality. Riots
were happening for the same issues in Cleveland, Chicago, Omaha, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Since all these riots were occurring far away from
Detroit many Detroiters thought that their city would spare the riots. Sadly, they were wrong.
In July 23, 1967, the Detroit Police department busted a bar with a prominent number of African Americans. They arrested every person in the bar.
More and more people started to gather on 12th street to watch the proceedings. That is when the rioting started. The crowd began to get more violent
as more people joined.
During the riot, the first fire started at a shoe store on 12th. Officers were starting to line up with shields standing next to each other to block the
rioting from spreading any further. There were authorities having a meeting to try and stop the riot. They were trying to make peace patrols but the
police officers were blocking them from entering the area of the riot. The police officers were still trying to take control of the situation but their
officers were being injured and the rioters started to outnumber them by a lot. As the police officers were giving up the firefighters were putting out
fires. There were new fires starting as fast as they were being put out.

A Short Note On Oklahoma Race Riots And The Black Wall Street

Tulsa Race Riots
On May 31–June 1, 1921, a series of actions occurred in Greenwood, a small district in the northern parts of Tulsa, Oklahoma, which are now called
the Tulsa race Riots.
Being a segregated city like the rest of Oklahoma, many of Tulsa's African American citizens resided in Greenwood– an area composed of
predominately African American communities and business locations. The discovery of oil is the number one reason why Tulsa's economy flourished.
There was an abundance of wealthy African Americans due to of this discovery. Because of the affluence and success within the African American
community going on in this one particular area, it became known as the Black Wall Street.
The whole chain of events began on May 30, 1921 when Dick Rowland, a young black man, allegedly assaulted a white elevator operator. Rowland was
arrested the next day. However, outside the courthouse a group of raging whites gathered to attempt to lynch Rowland while a group of African
Americans were protecting him to prevent the hanging. With the signal of one unintentional gunshot, many others rang out leaving some from both
groups dead. With word getting around town of the riot, many angered whites stormed into the Greenwood District. Residencies were set on fire and
many businesses were looted and burned to the ground. Planes also flew by dropping bombs in the area. With law enforcement on the whites' side, the
officers were also a part of the riot. The National Guard was

Race Riot Essay
This book review was on the book of Race Riot: Chicago in the Red Summer of 1919. It was a long–term study done by William M. Tuttle, Jr. Its
objective was to make a comprehensive documentation of the events of 1919 in Chicago. The book dealt with all aspects and perspectives of the
event. The author's objective was to leave no stone uncovered. That every aspect would be talked about in detail. Some important aspects that he arose
throughout the book are going to be the focal point of this book review.
I think that it would be proper to give a little history about the author. William Tuttle was a graduate from Denison University in 1959. He obtained his
Ph.D. degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1967. He is a college professor and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many instances Tuttle states that the police not only condoned the beatings and killings but also participated in many of them. He often made the
point of police involvement. Like when the two black officers came to arrest the suspected stoners the other white officers did not allow them to arrest
them and let them go free. These actions put fear into blacks. Tuttle states, "They had expected little else of a police force which they had come to
view as the armed representative of white hostility"(Tuttle, 33). These actions may explain the resentment and hatred of police today by many blacks.
There was also a big influx of blacks to Chicago. The numbers of blacks migrating to Chicago was tremendous. Many reasons Tuttle states are the
cause for this. The major one is just blacks wanting to leave the south. They wanted to leave the segregated south in hope of a better future. They
were tired of the Jim Crow laws, lynching, poor school, and constant harassment. A black said, "Anywhere north will do us"(Tuttle, 79). Another
reason was jobs. In the time of war, the big manufactories trying to keep up with the needs of the military were in dire needs of people to work.
There were actual labor recruiters whose job was to go out and recruit blacks to work in the factories. Moreover, when the opportunity to work opened
up blacks took them in full demand. It was a way out of the south.

If I were to ask you what was the Stonewall riots and when did they take place, could you tell me? Well, no need because that is the exact reason
why I'm writing this paper. In order to better inform you, my peers of what happened, where they took place, and why they are so important to
American history. The 1960's were not a welcoming time for those who fell into the LGBT community, ally or not. So those in the community who
were affected came together and turned Inns into a place of refuge. Therefore, the Stonewall Riots were an important event in American History
because it brought to the attention of the people; social injustices, police corruption, and sparked a social movement for peace and rights for all. Social

Crime groups used the fragile times and division of the people to solicit money from gay clientele, and by the mid 60's the Genovese crime family
controlled more than half of the Greenwich Village gay bar including Stonewall Inn. Like some of the other inns Stonewall was a registered "bottle
bar" or a bar that did not require a liquor license because its audience were to bring their own liquor. To keep the Inns false exclusivity and privacy
the Genovese family would bribe the Sixth Precinct to keep quiet about what happens or more over what doesn't happen at the Inn. Without the police
the crime family could cut costs and blackmail those of a higher status for more money to keep their secret. Stonewall eventually became a very
important part of Greenwich culture being cheap, large, and a place for runaway and homeless gay youth. Nevertheless, riots were still a part of the

Baltimore Riots
When it rains, it pours; and where tragedy strikes, a war will follow. This is what comes to mind when the subject of Baltimore arises. The
unexpected death of a young Baltimore man, Freddie Gray, while in police custody, sparked the flame in the city's ongoing rage and riots. Autopsy
reports showed signs of "high–energy injury "as the cause of death, suggesting neglect from the arresting officers (New York Times, 2015). When
information was leaked of this tragedy, people in the community were negatively affected, and many began to riot. At this point, the question is not how
to stop the rioting, but how to prevent it?
In order to prevent such a widespread, repetitive tragedy, we must look deep into the roots of a community. When we break... Show more content on

This is directly linked to the lack of well–paying jobs and education. People in these underprivileged communities, most of the time, lack the financial
stability to be able to achieve a successful education. Some are forced to drop out of school to work and care for their families (Beilenson and
McGuire, 2012). The US Census did report, from 2009 through 2013, 80.2% of the population, ages 25 and older, had graduated from high school;
26.8% had achieved at least a Bachelor's degree (US Census, 2015). Are the riots partly a cry for help from the poor? Maybe this is the attention that
the people of Baltimore think they need in order to show the world of their deficiencies, especially the city's youth (MSNBC News, 2015). There is also
the consideration of "outsiders" coming into the community to take advantage of a hurting and crumbling city (MSNBC News, 2015). Most of these
"outsiders" are wanting "representation" of the movement for their lives, using the riots as their voices (MSNBC News, 2015). The rioting is
destroying the city of Baltimore, only receiving negative attention. Instead of helping the community and building a strong, safe protester union, the
unlawful riots are only building distrust, in turn hurting the

Stonewall Riots Essay
Everyone knows what happened at Stonewall. The story has been glorified and romanticized throughout the decades since the original riot in 1969.
The public perception of the Stonewall Riots is that this three day long episode was the beginning of modern LGBTQIA organization, or, as it is
commercially referred to, LGBTQIA "pride". However, another police raid occurred four years earlier at California Hall in San Francisco, California.
This narrative has been trivialized into local history, while the succeeding police raid has made it into national history. The religious groups and the
homophile movements tell an extremely contrasting story of the LGBTQIA community and the chronicles of the police raids they faced from the

This distinction was made clearest by the involvement of religion in both of these specific instances. During California Hall, clerical members acted as
protectors of the LGBTQIA community, and took extensive actions to prevent police harassment of the guests. For example, after seeing that police
photographers were present to intimidate those attending the ball, clergy members attempted to stand in front of the camera so that either the guests
would be photographed with respectable members of the cloth, or not photographed at all(White 72). Actions like this highlight the vulnerability of the
LGBTQIA community, and were epitomized once the clergy held a press conference. This press conference cemented the portrayal of the LGBTQIA
community as having been saved by the clergy; showing that if the clergy had not taken the actions that they had, the outcome of the night would have
taken a dramatic turn for the worse. This is in stark contrast to the Stonewall narrative, where religion has been almost completely removed from the
popular narrative (White 140). This distinction is of utmost importance, because the Stonewall rioters have now been portrayed as individuals who had
absolutely no help or support from any homophile

The Springfield 1908 Race Riots
Springfield 's history is a long and eventful one. Although there was one event that has seemed to haunt the citizens of Springfield for generations
upon generations. This event is commonly referred to as the Springfield 1908 race riots. The race riots are remembered as a dark and painful part
of springfield's history. On June first, a single black man named Joe James jumped off a freight train entering springfield, and began a streak of
partying. He had been arrested soon after, and was sentenced for 50 days in the jail, but was allowed to run errands while on parole. WHile on
parole on June 3rd, he left and didn't come back. While drunk, he had entered Clergy Ballard's house the night before, and had slashed the neck of
Clergy after attempting to sexually assault his daughter. The next day, after waking up on a park bench, multiple of Clergy's relatives and
neighbors ganged up on James and beat him senseless until police arrived to arrest James. They hauled him off to the town jail until shipped off to
a court case. On August 14, over a month later, a newspaper reported that Mabel Hallam had been raped by George Richardson. She claimed that in
the middle of the night while in her backyard, a black man came to her and allegedly raped her. There was no evidence, but George was convicted
anyway. Sadly, this isn't the first instance of racism in springfield. Racial tensions had long been an issue in the midwest, and even in the rest of the
country. Springfield was an

You soon find yourself pushed and shoved to the back of the room, the farthest distance away from the stage as possible, along with hundreds of other
"good girlfriends" as personified coat hangers. This was an issue faced by many women in the early 90's who were interested in the punk rock scene, yet

What the media fails to accurately portray is that feminists strive to promote equality for both women and men. Utilizing feminism as their secret
weapon to add diversity to the overly male punk scene, the riot grrrls managed to successfully promote women's rights with politically charged tunes
that empowered women to make a change.
However, despite of its fabricated intentions, the media proposed a valid argument against the movement: why the movement did not last over the
years. One often overlooked aspect of Riot grrrl was that although it claimed to revive the feminist appeal by standing up for ALL women, the
majority of its efforts seemed to appeal more in favor of middle–class Caucasian women. Members with a variety of ethnic backgrounds who identified
themselves as riot grrrls felt that that their adversities and struggles as both minorities and women were not equally put into perspective as much as
those of their counterparts. This flaw within the movement has negatively affected its social longevity and overall appeal to a wider range of women,
yet the dedication to spread awareness on intimate struggles and successful establishment of a community within the movement have proven to still be
both effective as well as inspiring in today's modern society. Without a doubt, the riot grrrl movement took the world by storm on a social and political
level, but not entirely on the still prominently masculine world of

Zoot Suit Riots
Zoot Suit Riots Racial tensions began heightening in the city of Los Angeles on June of 1943. It's what came to be known as the Zoot Suit Riots.
Racial tension between Mexican Americans who were called both pachucos and zoot suiters. They were known for their fashion which had a
symbolic meaning towards them, it was a way in expressing themselves which white sailors and servicemen disliked. They saw Mexican Americans as
thugs, gang members, and delinquents. White servicemen and sailors were unfamiliar with hispanics, but it was so easy for them to discriminate by
appearance. Several Mexican Americans served in white units. Tension was rising between them, especially when marines and sailors assaulted both
Mexican and African Americans in their own neighborhood. Also, for a false rumor towards Mexican Americans which stated that they had attacked
and stabbed a sailor. Both races were being discriminated and were treated unjustly. The day came on June 3, 1943 where these conflicts led to theZoot
Suit Riots. This incident of violence lasted a whole week. Zoot suiters were beaten and arrested for no reason at all. The issues that led to the Zoot
Suits in 1943 was Jose Diaz, the Sleepy Lagoon Case, and racial attacks between whites and people of color. This filled the atmosphere with a lot of
hatred and discrimination that had erupted in the summer of 1943. The riot led to a compromise of all military personnel being banned from the city

Who Decided To Make A Riot Analysis
Assignment 4 Who decided to make a riot one day? Why did they think violence should be the answer? When it comes down to the people getting
our voice heard, brutality should not have been a thought that came to mind. Riots are irrelevant because of how innocent people are victimized
when they aren't the ones causing the unfair treatment in our society. I wonder why individuals go against their own people when it's the ones who
are in charge of decision making who we should be angry with. I think that's exactly what the government wants us to do, go against each other so
they could throw us in prison and make billions of dollars off of us. If the people knew what they were doing to themselves I guarantee they would put

London Riots
In this essay, I will be proposing a suitable research method to identify the causes of the 2011 London Riots that took place between the 6th August and
the 10th August, which resulted in lawlessness – chaos, looting, arson, attacks, etc. My aim is to determine why the riots happened, so that such
violence can be prevented in the future. I will do this using scientific methodology and choose the most appropriate method for my research. Firstly, a
summary of the Experimental Method. It originates from a research question, but you could say the idea behind the question is derived from intuition.

Homosexuality And The Effects Of The Stonewall Riots
The Stonewall Riots highlighted a key issue in the late 1960s American society. Homosexuality was often seen as an illness and a sin to most people.
For example, in April 1952 homosexuality was deemed a sociopathic mental disorder by the American Psychiatric Association (CNN). This idea was
heightened in American society because it was being taught that being gay was one of the worst things an American can be; showing videos such as
"Boys Beware". This all changed after the conflict at the Stonewall Inn; located in New York on Christopher Street. The Stonewall Inn was the
place where gays and lesbians would flock to, to feel accepted for once in their lives as many of them ran away or were disowned by their own
families. Even though Stonewall was a place of freedom, it was also a place for fear as the police would constantly raid the bar to make sure that
alcohol was not being served to gays, as the New York State Liquor Authority deemed it illegal to serve homosexuals. Lasting only three days, the riots
were able to help start the transformation of American society to become what it is today. The lack of a formal compromise between the nation and the
LGBT community was an advantage for the effects of Stonewall to spread as the conflict was able to bring a wave of acceptance and pushed many
of history's gay role models to feel inspired to stand up.
Unlike most issues in history there was no compromise for the Stonewall Riots. After the American Revolution, the Treaty of Paris was there to help
regulate the tension between America and England, but for Stonewall it was just met with messy streets that needed to be cleaned up, injuries on both
sides, and the realization that there was a need for change. Treaties or compromises often come with rigid details that confine the parties involved to
follow very strict rules. For example, The Treaty of Paris divided the land in North America between Spain, Britain, and the colonist, kicking the French
off the continent entirely (Treaty of Paris). If the events of Stonewall were subject to the confinements that a compromise brings to a situation its strong
influence and reach that it had would have ultimately been cut short. The Gay Liberation Front is a prime example

Protests Riots Of The United States
Protests riots in the United States has proven to an issue for both the country's financial strength and the unity of the nation. With the presence of
social injustices, combined with the increased impact of social media propaganda, protests riots are beginning to reach an all time high. Protest riots
destroy individual communities and businesses, jeopardizes the safety of others and taints the protest's cause by resorting to civil disobedience.
Action must be done in order to prevent these random acts of violence from continuing after every social hot topic. The goal is not to prevent
citizens from protesting; in fact, this should be encouraged. The goal is to change the way the protests are handled from both the citizens and
authority perspectives, in order to prevent these protests from escalating into something dangerous. There are three solutions that need to be
introduced in order to correct the problems caused by protest riots. If police officers change their approach when dealing with protests, there is a

The Stonewall Riots
Obviously, the gay community will not stop to remember the major events leading to gay liberation in the U.S. Those who witnessed the June 28,
1969 violent demonstrations by a group of gays at the Stonewall Inn, located in the Greenwich Village near Manhattan, New York City, will forever
remember the impact of that early morning hours riots against police raid in the history of gay liberation movement.
Greenwich Village is a known territory for sizable homosexuals; gays and lesbians. The huge numbers of homosexuals in the region may be due to the
influx of men and women who earlier served in the military. The increasing population of homosexuals in the region encouraged theNew York Cityto

The early homosexual groups in the U.S. proved that gay people also play important roles in the society, and should not be humiliated whatsoever.
During the last years of the 1960s, several movements were active, including the antiwar demonstrations, African American Civil Right Movements,
and the Counterculture of the 1960s. These social movement groups together with the liberal environment of Greenwich Village, served as the major
influencers for the Stonewall riots.
The story of gay In the U.S. today is completely different from the way it was in the 1950s and 1960s. During the 1950s and 1960s, gay people were
only welcomed by a few establishments such as bars. During that period, the Stonewall Inn, owned by the Mafia, was very popular among the
downgraded people in the gay community.
Despite the incessant raiding of gay bars by police in the 1960s, Stonewall Inn was the only place that subdued the officers. Since the Stonewall Inn was
the major place for male prostitutes, representative of the transgender community, drag queens, and effeminate young men, they attracted a very huge

The Stonewall Riots: The Beginning of a Movement
Throughout history, homosexuals have been persecuted for being themselves. From the suicide of the ancient writer Sappho to Leonardo Da Vinci's
arrest for "sodomy", we can see that people have loved others of the same sex since the beginning. Only now, in modern times, have we allowed the
LGBT+ (Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, and plus.) to be seen as equals in the eyes of the law. Yet, these strides towards equality have not
been without its sacrifices. It is believed by many that the modern day LGBT+ movement was sparked by the Stonewall Riots. As a result, the Stonewall
riots proved to homosexuals that they were persecuted and maltreated. It pushed those who were still reluctant, and someone whom I was quite close
to, to finally start believing that it was time to speak up for their rights.
For eons, homosexuals have lived in fear: a fear of coming out and showing the world their true, raw selves. They have been tormented and looked
down on for living lifestyles different than the "traditional" way. There are numerous reasons why homosexuals choose to keep their true selves
hidden behind a forced facade. Unfortunately, this is because of the fact that many people in the past, and present, think lesbians and gay men have
psychological problems. Thus, they are seen as a danger to the public. Harassment of gay and lesbian people was one method used to fight them off.
The harassment of LGBT members today is still

Causes Of The Stonewall Riots
Another cause of the riots was the mistreatment of the arrested patrons from the police. The patrons taunted the police as they were paraded out into
the streets to the wagon waiting to transport them to the police station. As the patrons left the Inn, they struck poses towards the crowd as the people
showered the police and arrested with coins. One notable drag queen, stopped and posed, only to get pushed roughly into the wagon by police. This is
when the crowd noticeably got angrier, and began to throw trash and stones. (Truscott).
"A number of incidents were happening simultaneously. There was no one thing that happened or one person, there was just... a flash of group, of
mass anger" (Wright). It is agreed on though, that as the mass of people grew, so did the collective anger of the people. "Gay people were pissed off
that the Stonewall had been busted and its patrons had been arrested and harassed by the cops. There was a riot going on. They weren't going to take it
anymore." (Truscott).
While the riot grew over a span of 45 minutes, it lasted for six days. "A multiracial lot of poor gay teens, many living on the streets because they had
been tossed out of homes or ran away from abuse, taunted the cops with abandon. Transvestites who camped and mocked the cops while striking blows
with spiked heels showed that defiance and humor could be complementary." (Wolf). Drag queens strutted down streets, kicking in chorus lines to
mock the police. (Eilperin). The crowd erupted,

Cameron's Speech On The 2011 Riots
In his speech on the riots, Cameron discounted social conditions such as poverty and unemployment as reasons for the 2011 riots, and focussed instead
on criminality and morality '(Andrews, G. 2014). This essay will compare and contrast this conservative view of the riots with the radical view. A riot
is an occasion involving violence directed at property, persons or authority. The current understanding of the termriot dates back to the fourteenth
century, when it began to suggest violence and disorder among the population. By the eighteenth–century violence and disorder was on the rise in
England, which resulted in Parliament passing the Riot Act of 1715. Conservatism is characterised for their resistant to change, although when it is

The discussion on BBC News night highlighted the differences in the conservative and radical views on the riots. Ian Kinsella described his concern at
how the rioters would be controlled going forward. He described how he pleaded with the rioters to stop, however was chased off and told 'You're
insured mate, you'll be ok!'. Opposite Ian Kinsella was Cody Lachey, a proud mancunion who admitted to dressing inconspicuously to partake in
the looting. Cody Lachey had a change of heart and although he fully supported the looters, he decided against looting. Kirsty the BBC news
reporter pointed out that Cody Lachey had served in the military overseas in Afghanistan and Bosnia, he also worked as a security guard for large
retailers, she questioned why he doesn't turn the looters in? Cody's response 'Because I understand...We live in an impoverished society where
people do what they have to do to feed their families, and that's the life we're living.'' (The Open University, 2017). Cody's response is one shared
with a high percentage of the rioters, they blamed the crushing effect of poverty, parents who have to work two or three jobs to make ends meet,
parents who have no time for their children, no childcare, increase intuition fees, closure of youth services and scrapping of education maintenance
and lack of respect from the police. It is believed 59% of those arrested for rioting were unemployed and conceded their involvement in looting was
simply down to opportunism, saying that a perceived suspension of normal rules presented them with the opportunity to acquire goods and luxury
items they could not ordinarily afford. (Rusbridger, A. 2017). Martin Luther King once defined rioting as the language of the unheard. This was a
radical's view expressed by a youth worker shortly after the 2011

New York City Draft Riots
On July 13, 1863, the streets of New York City were ablaze. People ran rampant without a care of the well being of anyone else; mutilating bodies,
robbing people, and setting buildings on fire. Children were rushed to safety from the bloodthirsty mobs. These were the New York City Draft Riots
of 1863, and colored and rich people weren't safe from the protests that the poor and working class had against the highly controversial draft
(Bernstein 34). These violent riots had to be stopped, and someone had to come up with an idea to put the crowds at rest. The New York CityDraft
Riots of 1863 were stopped when the Union government decided to compromise by stopping the draft and not receiving more troops for the civil war.
The Draft Riots began on July 13 of 1863 and lasted for five days (Amato and Meisel). The civil war was taking place and the Battle of Gettysburg
was ending. Hopes for a Union victory were skyrocketing like never before and the brave soldiers were heading home. Slavery also seemed to only
be a temporary thing, with so many African Americans arriving free into the north (Lighthizer). Many things had gone wrong in the past, including
battles and race issues. The future seemed so bright for nearly everyone in New York City, and something seemed so clear; things were finally getting
better for so many people. Unfortunately for the happy people, it wouldn't remain that way for long.
Racism, fuelled by anger, during that time was at a towering peak. African

Around 3:00 pm on Sunday April 11, 1993 a riot started when prisoners returning from recreation time attacked prison guards in cell block L. The
guards held the keys to the entire cell block and it did not take long for the prisoners to take full advantage of the keys. Four beaten guards were
released within hours of the attack but 8 were retained. The riot was started for many reasons but the most obvious reason was TB testing on
Muslims, they do not believe in using needles to take blood or for injections. Soon after the take over of the cell block Warren Tate shut off the power

A lot of what the public thinks about the riot is most likely false information. One reporter said that 172 inmate bodies were piled up inside the prison,
when only 11 died.
The reporters did not help the negotiations at all. Inmates with battery powered TV's were able to see sharpshooters position themselves on the roofs.
Some negotiators believe the riot could have ended hours after it had started when prisoners tried to negotiate using bullhorns but could not because of
helicopters hovering so low. The media wasn't always a bad thing though one reporter was able to exchange a hostage to allow an inmate some air time.
When the riot started the guards went into small rooms called safe wells. The rooms were made out of 2 layers of block and had steel reinforced
doors. The doors did their job but the prisoners started to beat at the block walls with weight lifting bars. Soon they busted a hole into the room and
dragged the guards through the walls. The guards were assigned men to watch them; these men were ordered to kill the guards if the prison came
under attack. A few of the guards were protected very well because they affiliated with the AryanBrotherhood. These few lucky guards were even
given weapons to defend themselves incase of a race riot within the prison.

May Day Riot Of 1517 Essay
Throughout the 'Early Modern World', a huge variety of factors such as economic, environmental, social and political meant for a shift in culture which
in turn provoked protest throughout the period. There was a common split in communities and the divide was simple; those that feared change and
wanted aspects of life to stay the same and those that favoured the shift into a more modern era. Historians therefore have debated whether or not
protests during this period were due to a growing sense of community, or that an expression of community was simply a by–product of other reasons for
protest such as economic discontent or xenophobic attacks on foreigners. Historian Julius R. Ruff states that "a community often closed ranks in the

Joseph P. Ward reinforces the immaturity and potential recklessness of the apprentices by stating that "apprentices were bridging the gap between kids

a serious political movement challenging for change. One must therefore reinforce the statement that the Evil
May Day Riot of 1517 was indeed due to wider factors and not primarily an expression of community. In conclusion, the protest that took place in
1517 was indeed instigated by xenophobic leaders that utilised foreign workers as scapegoats and within the protest one could argue that there were
some aspects of community. Having said this, the protest was clearly a by–product of economic and social discontent that did not represent the whole
community at all. A thousand apprentice labourers looting and destroying foreign worker's property partly due to their hatred of foreign 'aliens' and
partly due to wanting to selfishly climb the social ladder does not express the sense of community and thus, one must conclude that the May Day riot
was indeed a clear product of wider

Life for most homosexuals during the first half of the Twentieth century was one of hiding, being ever so careful to not give away their true feelings
and predilections. Although the 1920s saw a brief moment of openness in American society, that was quickly destroyed with the progress of the Cold
War, and by default, that of McCarthyism. The homosexuals of the 50s "felt the heavy weight of medical prejudice, police harassment and church
condemnation ... [and] were not able to challenge these authorities." They were constantly battered, both physically and emotionally, by the society that
surrounded them. The very mention or rumor of one's homosexuality could lead to the loss of their family, their livelihood and, in some cases, their ...

The founders "greatly admired Martin Luther King's nonviolent methods in forcing integration" and attempted to emulate those principles in their
struggle. The problem was not in their efforts, or intentions, but the fact that their society was politically weak, garnering little support among the
homosexuals of that era. As the civil unrest of the 1960s continued to grow, with more radical and leftist movements emerging, the Mattachine Society
was viewed as traditional, conservative, and unwilling to literally fight for the rights of their people. It was not uncommon for the New York Police
Department Morals Task Force to raid gay bars. In fact, during the two decades leading up to theStonewall Riots, the raids were more commonplace
than naught. Many have speculated as to why the raids were common – some saying it was because of the Italian Mafia's involvement in owning those
establishments, and consequently forgetting to bribe the local police; others believe it to be based in bias, hatred, and ignorance of people different
from oneself. In the Stonewall Inn's specific case, it could have been a combination of both. The Inn, which was owned by the Mafia, was actually a
bottle club, meaning they did not own a liquor license. You had to be a member to drink there. While these various theories are most likely true, as far
as ancillary causes, the fact remains that there was an

Why Do People Justify Riots?
Riots are often the center of discussion and, unfortunatly, also misunderstood. These two articles shed some light on this issue and share the same point
of view.
The first article highlights the importance of taking into consideration the social situation of the rioters caused by the wide gap between classes. It
states that the breach marginalizes them and makes them feel left out of the community that they are harming. I would personally agree with this since
it does seem easy to judge riots without putting any effort in understanding the reasons behind them. Another thing I can agree with the author is that a
lot of people will only put blame on either the so–called criminals or the police.
The second article shares these opinions, it

Imagine being born in a place where people don't mix with one another and keep to their own kind. Imagine not being able to walk into a store

and lack of education were all problems of everyday life? If everyone were treated equally, then it would not be a problem. But for inner city African
Americans that isn't the case. As humans, there is only so much we can take when it comes to segregation before we act out. There is only so much

The scuffle attracted
a small crowd of angry onlookers, which included Frye's mother and brother.
They were also arrested. (Auerbach 1688) That's all it took for this riot to come into play, a few people unhappy about the way the police handled the
situation. The next thing you know its a few thousand unhappy people.
In the Watts community, at that time, there were five hundred and forty thousand African Americans. Many of them had immigrated from the south in
search of better work opportunities, as well as freedom from injustice and inequalities (Auerbach 1687).
Once the police arrested Marquette Frye, angry Watts's residents began stoning passing cars and setting them on fire (Bradley 895).Two days later, on
the morning of August 13th, massive amounts of people marched into the business district and started a free–for–all on the local stores. Firebombs and
attacks against white owned businesses followed. Then they started dragging people from their cars and beating them. Watts had a storehouse of
combustible materials located on the southeast side of Los Angeles. A minor clash between police and black residents resulted in an explosion that
ripped through Watts (Magill 1924).

The Violence Of The Watts Riot
The 1960s was a time for change. It promoted on going expectations of equality for all races. This proved to be difficult for minorities. In August of
1965, civil unrest broke out, which lead to six–day revolt called the Watts Riot. Nearly thirty years later another riot broke out which caused even
greater damage and left an even greater impact in our history, the Rodney King Riots. Both of these events share similar qualities and devastating
damages, however, their meanings are much harder to decipher from one another. These impactful events in our society demonstrate how much there
needs to change in our society, especially when dealing with minorities. The Watts riots began in the summer of 1965, in a city in Los Angeles called
Watts. It all began with the arrest of a young African American by a white California Highway Patrol officer. Now, it was not because he was arrested
for already doing something illegal, it was for the way the police officer treated the individual. According to Lacine Holland, an eyewitness to the
arrest, the officer "took him and threw him in the car like a bag of laundry and kicked his feet in and slammed the door." (Flournoy) This caused lots
of unrest among the fellow residents of Watts. This was just the beginning of years of pent up oppression for the minorities, which participated in the
event. Similarly, in 1992, the Rodney King riots also arose due to the acquittal of four Los Angeles Police Department officers for their brutal beating

Comparison: The Baltimore And 1968s Riots
A riot means a violent disturbance of the peace by a crowd. Like the two riots we are going to see that happened in Baltimore City. Recently
Baltimore had a riot but that wasn't the first riot that Baltimore had, in 1968 there was a riot and this year 2015 another riot happened. The Baltimore
riots are proof that things do stay the same.
In the 1968 and th 2015 riots there are some similarities both riots started peacefully then turned to violence, in the 1968s the assassination of Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. in Tennessee triggered the 1968sriot and In 2015 Freddie Gray, a 25–year–old Black man who was a resident of Baltimore was
harshly beat and arrested and placed in a police van without the seatbelt on him and a week later he died the officers were responsible for his death.
As I say on the top both riot started peacefully protests in the 1968s riot children were also involved in demonstrations. In the 2015 riot mostly adults
between 20 to 30– years–old were involved. In the 1968s riot residents were upset about poverty and suffering from the riot and in the 2015s riot
residents feared living their homes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Baltimore as a bad place to live also Baltimoreans began to distrust each other. Crimes are high, places where schools are weak, unemployment is
high and still there is a lot of segregation this makes Baltimore not a good place for young black makes to grow up. Many go on to make significant

Can Riots/Public Demonstrations Bring Change? A demonstration is an action by a group of people in favor of a political or other cause. It normally
consists of walking in a mass march formation and either beginning with or meeting at a designated endpoint to hear speakers. Actions such as
blockades and sit–ins may also be referred to as demonstrations. Demonstrations can be violent or nonviolent. Nonviolent demonstrations can turn into

It is another thing entirely to pick up a picket sign and support it in public to stand together with others to represent a movement. Demonstrations make
the cause feel more real to participants. Demonstrations put warm bodies and heavy feet out there representing an issue, taking up real space and real
time, attaching the cause to real faces and real voices who care enough about the cause to go out there (Head "Why Protest Events Are Not a Waste of
Time).
A successful demonstration energizes participants. It causes people to get excited over their cause. People feel as though their voices are being
heard. Demonstrations make people feel proud and good about themselves because they took a stand on an issue. A good demonstration has an
almost religious effect on people, charging their batteries and inspiring them to get up and fight again another day (Head "Why Protest Events Are
Not a Waste of Time). The religious effect is very helpful to the demonstrators giving them a reason to fight for their cause. It is very helpful for
veteran activists because it gives them a second wind which is just as helpful to the cause.
It is when demonstrations become violent that change does not happen. When demonstrations become violent they are know to be riots. Ariot is a form
of civil disorder characterized often by what is thought of as disorganized groups lashing out in a sudden and intense rash of violence against authority,
people, or property. Riots often

Causes Of The London Riots
On August 6th 2011, riots started in Tottenham, London, over the fatal shooting of Mark Duggan by the police. Protesters attacked the police
station and its officers. Over the next 3 days the rioting, looting, arson, criminal damage and assault rapidly spread throughout London and England.
The speed at which the riots spread caught those in charge off guard so they didn't call for reinforcements fast enough. This meant there were
insufficient numbers of police officers on the streets to stop the rioters. The police emergency plans already in place to deal with such a situation
were not adapted quickly enough to bring the disorder under control. It took three days before 16,000 police officers brought an end to the violence.
During the London riots it was important that the strategic team (Gold) were able to use the command and control system to make the right decisions
for the officers on the ground so they could carry out their duties efficiently and effectively. Officers on the front lines of the riots were dependant on
those in charge keeping them informed on where the riots were breaking out and which streets were safe for them to use. Due to a major failure in
their new communication systems their radios were not working and at one point those in command had no communication with their operational
teams so they had no idea how many officers were on duty, which led to a lot of confusion as personnel had no idea which commander they had to

Scarcity Riots Of England During The Period Of Spring 1801...
The collection of documents creates an image of scarcity riots happening across the South west of England during the period of spring 1801. At
same time England was facing economic hardship because of constant high taxation as a result of the war with France. The country was in the midst
of crop shortages caused by the poor harvest in the previous year of 1799. The current years were also being shaped by the ideas of Scottish moral
philosopher Adam Smith's 'Wealth of Nations' which pushed ideas of free trade. These ideas were meant to causemarket contention resulting in market
prices naturally decreasing, but due to the current economic situation of low wages and shortages prices continued to be high. Which is why there was
social unrest surrounding the market place, with the last scarcity riot only being 4 years prior. The south ranging from Plymouth in Devon through
Somerset into Bristol was especially hard hit, due to its low prices at the start of the period. Following Adam Smith's theory many farmers were willing
to venture further to achieve higher prices in different markets. This meant the South was relying solely on its own supplies, meaning great demand
and little supply. It is this South dominated documentation that helps paint a picture of the dynamics that developed between the market, mob and
magistrate. It shows the crowds action verse the magistrates reaction, and whether these varied from town to town. These primary sources can also be

curfew delivered by Mayor LaGuardia. The Mayor also halted vehicle traffic except for service vehicles until everything had calmed down about two
days after the riots. Stores closed either due to damage or due to fear of repetition of damage, and they did not reopen until about two days after as
well. The Mayor also enacted prohibition throughout Harlem during and immediately following the riots (NY Times 8). La Guardia also brought
emergency food supplies to relieve burned out shops and houses, which gained him popularity among the black population. The amount of damage the
riots entailed not only affected the people and city of Harlem, but the race relations all over the country.
The Harlem Riots had a definitive start, but the build up to rioting varied among the sources used. According to an article in the NY Times on August

therefore caused the riot, along with the fact that police did not handle the situation correctly. Another article in the NY Times quoted Rev. Dr. Samuel

conflicting elements, when discussing how society can prevent similar problems in the future. Cameron expresses in text 1 that he wishes better

consequences involving a higher fixing of sentence and tougher police tactics will maybe have a frightening effect on young people, but will not

City Draft Riots

  • 1. City Draft Riots Throughout the United States there have been quite a number of riots in just about everywhere. Riots are typically known as noisy violent public discordance to protest against a new government policy or law or against another group. In a society such as America it is quite the norm for populations to take matters into their own hand and riot to stop what they believe is an injustice being done to them. Among the many riots that have occurred in the United States, the New York City Draft riots remains the largest riot to have occurred. It also remains the worst riot to ever occur in the city New York. (Cook 24) The Detroitrace riots are significant because it is one of the largest riots experience by Detroit. The largest experienced by the United states in a three decade period following the East St. Louis riots in 1917. The significance of the stonewall riots is largely more obvious than the previous two. The stonewall riots were the first major uprising by the gays and lesbians in the United States. The word stonewall has become synonymous with the start of the lesbian and gay civil rights movement in the United States. (Carter 1) There is an abundance of research done on the New York City draft riots, the Detroit race riots and the stonewall riots, yet to my knowledge there has been no attempt to link those three major and effective civil rights events together. ... • 2. Essay on Sante Fe Prison Riot Luisa Sauro September 28, 2011 Introduction to Corrections Term Paper New Mexico Penitentiary Riot SantГ© Fe, New Mexico The New Mexico penitentiary in south Santa Fe, New Mexico was no stranger to violence. This penitentiary has seen two riots in its past one July 19, 1922 and the other June 15, 1953, these however were nothing in comparison to the events to come. In the early morning hours of February 2, 1980 two prisoners began what would be recorded as one of the most violent prison riots in the history of the American correctional system. 33 prisoners died, over 200 inmates were injured and 12 correction officers were taken hostage of those 12, seven were badly beaten and raped. The causes of this riot were made ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Governor, Bruce King was well aware of the conditions and issues of the prison and warnings of a prison riot went disregarded. Prisoners began by taking control of south–side Dormitory E–2; within minutes the prisoners had taken four more officers in the dorm hostage, a fleeing officer left keys behind which gave the inmates complete access to the main control center, inmate cells, doors and weapons. By midafternoon violent offenders from solitary confinement had been released and the violence had gotten out of control. The prisoners had a particular area they could not access, the protective custody area, this area held the mentally ill and vulnerable inmates it included those inmates convicted of sex crimes and yes, those labeled snitches. Armed with blowtorches left by a construction crew, the inmates cut through the bars of the cells and in the early morning of February 3 began so did the brutal slaughter several inmates. Negotiations between inmates and authorities stalled but, eventually the inmates come up with 11 demands which included basic prison conditions like overcrowding, inmate discipline, educational services and improving food. The prisoners also demanded to talk to independent federal officials and members of the news media. In exchange they released the 12 officers held hostage. Some officers were badly beaten and raped but, others were protected by other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Essay On L. A Riots Of 1992 The L.A. Riots Of 1992: My Thoughts and Perspectives The L.A. Riots is one of the massive riots in american history. The riots were caused by the injustice beating of Rodney King by four officers. To put it in perspective, the riots happened because of racism by jury and officers. I watched a sundance film trailer about the L.A. Riots and how koreans were affected by the riots. After watching the trailer, I decided to do research and I learned about the deep details of how the riots happened. The L.A. Riots changed my morals on how people can be proved guilty or innocent so easily, plus my perspectives on racism against minorities of the United States. My perspective is that police have been harassing more people of color more during the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Years later, The L.A. Riots had stopped and people went on their lives. But the riots were never forgotten Even though the L.A. Riots affected black americans, it also affected korean immigrants and americans. Some of the riots took place in Koreatown and Richard Rhee, a man that was involved in the riots, was interviewed about what has the riots done to the korean community. Richard Rhee knew and saw other korean stores being vandalized during the L.A. riots. Rhee had guns ready for the onslaught of rioters and many koreans had shotguns. Koreans made their stores into fortresses against the rioters and they knew the police cannot help them. The attacks on Koreatown would continue for the whole riot ordel. There were many of evenings were korean americans had to defend their stores from rioters. Protecting their shops and their families from the dangers of the rioters. During and after the riots, the korean community and the black community would have a racial tensions for a few decades. But recently, the tensions have been dropped after a few decade years. Koreatown was not the first ones to be attacked by riots. Florence and Normandie Avenues were the first riots police officers had to deal with. • 5. The Causes Of The Stonewall Riots In 1969 in Greenwich Village, New York, a 6 day riot took place that would launch the first Pride March and launch the Gay Rights movement as a national movement. The conflict was started when police raided the Stonewall bar, a bar that was a safe place for homosexuals to visit, and violence erupted between the two groups. In the end, homosexuals were granted more rights and gained more acceptance in American culture. The Stonewall Riots took place in Greenwich Village, New York in 1969. Police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar run by the mafia, which outraged its many patrons and the people of the village. The patrons of the bar was not the only reason the Stonewall Inn got raided. Since it was illegal to sell alcohol to homosexuals, it was done illegally. The SLA, the state liquor authority, would not give liquor licenses to those who would sell to homosexuals. The Stonewall Inn owner, Fat Tony, combated this problem by saying the bar was a bottle club. A bottle club was where the patrons would bring their own bottles and get their alcohol from their privately owned stock. Violence broke out after 13 people were arrested and put into a wagon. "People in the crowd yelled at the police to stop. The officers responded by telling them to get off the street. Someone started throwing pocket change at the officers, and others began rocking the wagon" (Rede). Other villagers and patrons threw objects at the police, such as bricks and bottles, and chanted protests to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Stonewall Rebellion Or Stonewall Riots The Stonewall Rebellion or Stonewall Riots was a series of violent riots that took place between gay and trans activists, drag queens, and other patrons of The Stonewall Inn against the police after a raid had been carried out by the Sixth Precinct police. The days and rebellions that followed are monumental moments in LGBT and World history. For New York's gay and trans communities the 1960's marks a turning point in their history; Sodomy had been reduced to a misdemeanour, with a maximum sentence of six months in prison, the anti–gay accommodation rules of the New York State Liquor Authority had been overturned, allowing homosexuals to congregate and be served alcoholic beverages in bars, The American Psychiatric Association reclassified... Nevertheless, it became a nightly home to homeless youth and runaways, drag queens, people of colour, and other minorities who were often not accepted in gay spaces. Among its patrons was African American, Trans, Gay, and AIDS activist, sex worker, anddrag queen – Martha P. Johnson. Who would famously claim that the P. stood for "Pay it No Mind". The Stonewall Inn had been registered as a private "Bottle Bar" which meant patrons were expected to bring their own liquor. The Genovese Family would often bribe the Sixth Precinct to turn a blind eye to the activities occurring in inn. However, in the early hours of June 28th 1969 and readied with a warrant for storing and selling liquor without a licence; the police prepared to raid The Stonewall Inn. The raid began just after 3a.m, and the police found the illegal liquor and began arresting employees while the crowd booed but remained otherwise calm. Howard Smith, a village voice reporter who stayed with the police throughout the riot reported "During the "gay power" riots at the Stonewall last Friday night I found myself on what seemed to me the wrong side of the blue line. Very scary. Very enlightening." After arresting some of the employees, including the bartender, doorman, and reportedly brutalising some of the patrons. • 7. The Causes Of The Enlightenment And The Stonewall Riots The struggle for equality has been present in history since the dawn of time. From the Israeli struggle in their homeland during Roman rule to the hardships faced during the Civil Rights Movement, the desire for equal rights and freedom is not a new concept. Throughout history, one can find instances where events seem to repeat the events of the past. An instance of this is the parallel between the Enlightenment and the Stonewall Riots. Not only is there a parallel there, the French Revolution is similar to the Stonewall Riots as well. The Stonewall Riots were a series of riots that began on June 28th, 1969 in the early morning at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village of New York City. Police raided the building after they discovered the bar had been serving alcohol without a license. After the arrests of the bar workers and some of the LGBT community, bottles were thrown from those in the bar. This led to an uprising in which the police were barricaded into the establishment and the rioters attempted to set the building on fire (which they do eventually). For the next 5–6 days, more LGBT activists would gather to protest in the area meeting the police who tried their best to stop them. In the end, the riots ended when the New York CityRiot Police came in to control the area. One of the survivors of the riots, Scott G. Brown, recalls the night in a Huffington Post article whi he wrote. The article stated, "The riots were a reflection of the innermost feelings and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Detroit Riots Essay The Detroit riots occurred in the summer of 1967. The riot initially started because of race when poor African Americans got kicked out of their houses. They started living on 12th street in Detroit. The riot started there because African Americans were fed up with the way that they were being treated. Many years prior to the riot there were already racial issues. The government made it hard for African Americans to buy houses in the 1950s. During that time, white people were resisting African Americans from moving into Detroit. They were gathering outside of houses owned by African Americans until they would leave. According to Stanford, "I was blissfully unaware of the pervasive racism and resentment that was simmering in my city" (28). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was showing even more racial issues even in the law enforcement which is supposed to protect everyone no just people of their nationality. Riots were happening for the same issues in Cleveland, Chicago, Omaha, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Since all these riots were occurring far away from Detroit many Detroiters thought that their city would spare the riots. Sadly, they were wrong. In July 23, 1967, the Detroit Police department busted a bar with a prominent number of African Americans. They arrested every person in the bar. More and more people started to gather on 12th street to watch the proceedings. That is when the rioting started. The crowd began to get more violent as more people joined. During the riot, the first fire started at a shoe store on 12th. Officers were starting to line up with shields standing next to each other to block the rioting from spreading any further. There were authorities having a meeting to try and stop the riot. They were trying to make peace patrols but the police officers were blocking them from entering the area of the riot. The police officers were still trying to take control of the situation but their officers were being injured and the rioters started to outnumber them by a lot. As the police officers were giving up the firefighters were putting out fires. There were new fires starting as fast as they were being put out. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. A Short Note On Oklahoma Race Riots And The Black Wall Street Tu Tulsa Race Riots On May 31–June 1, 1921, a series of actions occurred in Greenwood, a small district in the northern parts of Tulsa, Oklahoma, which are now called the Tulsa race Riots. Being a segregated city like the rest of Oklahoma, many of Tulsa's African American citizens resided in Greenwood– an area composed of predominately African American communities and business locations. The discovery of oil is the number one reason why Tulsa's economy flourished. There was an abundance of wealthy African Americans due to of this discovery. Because of the affluence and success within the African American community going on in this one particular area, it became known as the Black Wall Street. The whole chain of events began on May 30, 1921 when Dick Rowland, a young black man, allegedly assaulted a white elevator operator. Rowland was arrested the next day. However, outside the courthouse a group of raging whites gathered to attempt to lynch Rowland while a group of African Americans were protecting him to prevent the hanging. With the signal of one unintentional gunshot, many others rang out leaving some from both groups dead. With word getting around town of the riot, many angered whites stormed into the Greenwood District. Residencies were set on fire and many businesses were looted and burned to the ground. Planes also flew by dropping bombs in the area. With law enforcement on the whites' side, the officers were also a part of the riot. The National Guard was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Race Riot Essay This book review was on the book of Race Riot: Chicago in the Red Summer of 1919. It was a long–term study done by William M. Tuttle, Jr. Its objective was to make a comprehensive documentation of the events of 1919 in Chicago. The book dealt with all aspects and perspectives of the event. The author's objective was to leave no stone uncovered. That every aspect would be talked about in detail. Some important aspects that he arose throughout the book are going to be the focal point of this book review. I think that it would be proper to give a little history about the author. William Tuttle was a graduate from Denison University in 1959. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1967. He is a college professor and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many instances Tuttle states that the police not only condoned the beatings and killings but also participated in many of them. He often made the point of police involvement. Like when the two black officers came to arrest the suspected stoners the other white officers did not allow them to arrest them and let them go free. These actions put fear into blacks. Tuttle states, "They had expected little else of a police force which they had come to view as the armed representative of white hostility"(Tuttle, 33). These actions may explain the resentment and hatred of police today by many blacks. There was also a big influx of blacks to Chicago. The numbers of blacks migrating to Chicago was tremendous. Many reasons Tuttle states are the cause for this. The major one is just blacks wanting to leave the south. They wanted to leave the segregated south in hope of a better future. They were tired of the Jim Crow laws, lynching, poor school, and constant harassment. A black said, "Anywhere north will do us"(Tuttle, 79). Another reason was jobs. In the time of war, the big manufactories trying to keep up with the needs of the military were in dire needs of people to work. There were actual labor recruiters whose job was to go out and recruit blacks to work in the factories. Moreover, when the opportunity to work opened up blacks took them in full demand. It was a way out of the south. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Stonewall Riots Research Paper If I were to ask you what was the Stonewall riots and when did they take place, could you tell me? Well, no need because that is the exact reason why I'm writing this paper. In order to better inform you, my peers of what happened, where they took place, and why they are so important to American history. The 1960's were not a welcoming time for those who fell into the LGBT community, ally or not. So those in the community who were affected came together and turned Inns into a place of refuge. Therefore, the Stonewall Riots were an important event in American History because it brought to the attention of the people; social injustices, police corruption, and sparked a social movement for peace and rights for all. Social injustices did not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Crime groups used the fragile times and division of the people to solicit money from gay clientele, and by the mid 60's the Genovese crime family controlled more than half of the Greenwich Village gay bar including Stonewall Inn. Like some of the other inns Stonewall was a registered "bottle bar" or a bar that did not require a liquor license because its audience were to bring their own liquor. To keep the Inns false exclusivity and privacy the Genovese family would bribe the Sixth Precinct to keep quiet about what happens or more over what doesn't happen at the Inn. Without the police the crime family could cut costs and blackmail those of a higher status for more money to keep their secret. Stonewall eventually became a very important part of Greenwich culture being cheap, large, and a place for runaway and homeless gay youth. • 12. Baltimore Riots When it rains, it pours; and where tragedy strikes, a war will follow. This is what comes to mind when the subject of Baltimore arises. The unexpected death of a young Baltimore man, Freddie Gray, while in police custody, sparked the flame in the city's ongoing rage and riots. Autopsy reports showed signs of "high–energy injury "as the cause of death, suggesting neglect from the arresting officers (New York Times, 2015). When information was leaked of this tragedy, people in the community were negatively affected, and many began to riot. At this point, the question is not how to stop the rioting, but how to prevent it? In order to prevent such a widespread, repetitive tragedy, we must look deep into the roots of a community. When we break... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is directly linked to the lack of well–paying jobs and education. People in these underprivileged communities, most of the time, lack the financial stability to be able to achieve a successful education. Some are forced to drop out of school to work and care for their families (Beilenson and McGuire, 2012). The US Census did report, from 2009 through 2013, 80.2% of the population, ages 25 and older, had graduated from high school; 26.8% had achieved at least a Bachelor's degree (US Census, 2015). Are the riots partly a cry for help from the poor? Maybe this is the attention that the people of Baltimore think they need in order to show the world of their deficiencies, especially the city's youth (MSNBC News, 2015). There is also the consideration of "outsiders" coming into the community to take advantage of a hurting and crumbling city (MSNBC News, 2015). Most of these "outsiders" are wanting "representation" of the movement for their lives, using the riots as their voices (MSNBC News, 2015). • 13. Stonewall Riots Essay Everyone knows what happened at Stonewall. The story has been glorified and romanticized throughout the decades since the original riot in 1969. The public perception of the Stonewall Riots is that this three day long episode was the beginning of modern LGBTQIA organization, or, as it is commercially referred to, LGBTQIA "pride". However, another police raid occurred four years earlier at California Hall in San Francisco, California. This narrative has been trivialized into local history, while the succeeding police raid has made it into national history. The religious groups and the homophile movements tell an extremely contrasting story of the LGBTQIA community and the chronicles of the police raids they faced from the common... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This distinction was made clearest by the involvement of religion in both of these specific instances. During California Hall, clerical members acted as protectors of the LGBTQIA community, and took extensive actions to prevent police harassment of the guests. For example, after seeing that police photographers were present to intimidate those attending the ball, clergy members attempted to stand in front of the camera so that either the guests would be photographed with respectable members of the cloth, or not photographed at all(White 72). Actions like this highlight the vulnerability of the LGBTQIA community, and were epitomized once the clergy held a press conference. This press conference cemented the portrayal of the LGBTQIA community as having been saved by the clergy; showing that if the clergy had not taken the actions that they had, the outcome of the night would have taken a dramatic turn for the worse. This is in stark contrast to the Stonewall narrative, where religion has been almost completely removed from the popular narrative (White 140). This distinction is of utmost importance, because the Stonewall rioters have now been portrayed as individuals who had absolutely no help or support from any homophile ... • 14. The Springfield 1908 Race Riots Springfield 's history is a long and eventful one. Although there was one event that has seemed to haunt the citizens of Springfield for generations upon generations. This event is commonly referred to as the Springfield 1908 race riots. The race riots are remembered as a dark and painful part of springfield's history. On June first, a single black man named Joe James jumped off a freight train entering springfield, and began a streak of partying. He had been arrested soon after, and was sentenced for 50 days in the jail, but was allowed to run errands while on parole. WHile on parole on June 3rd, he left and didn't come back. While drunk, he had entered Clergy Ballard's house the night before, and had slashed the neck of Clergy after attempting to sexually assault his daughter. The next day, after waking up on a park bench, multiple of Clergy's relatives and neighbors ganged up on James and beat him senseless until police arrived to arrest James. They hauled him off to the town jail until shipped off to a court case. On August 14, over a month later, a newspaper reported that Mabel Hallam had been raped by George Richardson. She claimed that in the middle of the night while in her backyard, a black man came to her and allegedly raped her. There was no evidence, but George was convicted anyway. Sadly, this isn't the first instance of racism in springfield. Racial tensions had long been an issue in the midwest, and even in the rest of the country. Springfield was an ... You soon find yourself pushed and shoved to the back of the room, the farthest distance away from the stage as possible, along with hundreds of other "good girlfriends" as personified coat hangers. What the media fails to accurately portray is that feminists strive to promote equality for both women and men. Utilizing feminism as their secret weapon to add diversity to the overly male punk scene, the riot grrrls managed to successfully promote women's rights with politically charged tunes that empowered women to make a change. However, despite of its fabricated intentions, the media proposed a valid argument against the movement: why the movement did not last over the years. One often overlooked aspect of Riot grrrl was that although it claimed to revive the feminist appeal by standing up for ALL women, the majority of its efforts seemed to appeal more in favor of middle–class Caucasian women. Members with a variety of ethnic backgrounds who identified themselves as riot grrrls felt that that their adversities and struggles as both minorities and women were not equally put into perspective as much as those of their counterparts. This flaw within the movement has negatively affected its social longevity and overall appeal to a wider range of women, yet the dedication to spread awareness on intimate struggles and successful establishment of a community within the movement have proven to still be both effective as well as inspiring in today's modern society. Without a doubt, the riot grrrl movement took the world by storm on a social and political level, but not entirely on the still prominently masculine world of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I wonder why individuals go against their own people when it's the ones who are in charge of decision making who we should be angry with. • 19. Homosexuality And The Effects Of The Stonewall Riots The Stonewall Riots highlighted a key issue in the late 1960s American society. Homosexuality was often seen as an illness and a sin to most people. For example, in April 1952 homosexuality was deemed a sociopathic mental disorder by the American Psychiatric Association (CNN). This idea was heightened in American society because it was being taught that being gay was one of the worst things an American can be; showing videos such as "Boys Beware". This all changed after the conflict at the Stonewall Inn; located in New York on Christopher Street. The Stonewall Inn was the place where gays and lesbians would flock to, to feel accepted for once in their lives as many of them ran away or were disowned by their own families. Even though Stonewall was a place of freedom, it was also a place for fear as the police would constantly raid the bar to make sure that alcohol was not being served to gays, as the New York State Liquor Authority deemed it illegal to serve homosexuals. Lasting only three days, the riots were able to help start the transformation of American society to become what it is today. The lack of a formal compromise between the nation and the LGBT community was an advantage for the effects of Stonewall to spread as the conflict was able to bring a wave of acceptance and pushed many of history's gay role models to feel inspired to stand up. Unlike most issues in history there was no compromise for the Stonewall Riots. After the American Revolution, the Treaty of Paris was there to help regulate the tension between America and England, but for Stonewall it was just met with messy streets that needed to be cleaned up, injuries on both sides, and the realization that there was a need for change. Treaties or compromises often come with rigid details that confine the parties involved to follow very strict rules. For example, The Treaty of Paris divided the land in North America between Spain, Britain, and the colonist, kicking the French off the continent entirely (Treaty of Paris). If the events of Stonewall were subject to the confinements that a compromise brings to a situation its strong influence and reach that it had would have ultimately been cut short. With the presence of social injustices, combined with the increased impact of social media propaganda, protests riots are beginning to reach an all time high. Protest riots destroy individual communities and businesses, jeopardizes the safety of others and taints the protest's cause by resorting to civil disobedience. Action must be done in order to prevent these random acts of violence from continuing after every social hot topic. The goal is not to prevent citizens from protesting; in fact, this should be encouraged. The goal is to change the way the protests are handled from both the citizens and authority perspectives, in order to prevent these protests from escalating into something dangerous. There are three solutions that need to be introduced in order to correct the problems caused by protest riots. If police officers change their approach when dealing with protests, there is a smaller chance that a protest will escalate into a riot. Also if there are hidden cameras implanted around the community and inside policer officer uniforms more people will be caught for their actions. If rioters embrace a more peaceful approach toward social injustices, they will be higher regarded by the general public. • 22. The Stonewall Riots The Stonewall Riots: The Beginning of a Movement Throughout history, homosexuals have been persecuted for being themselves. From the suicide of the ancient writer Sappho to Leonardo Da Vinci's arrest for "sodomy", we can see that people have loved others of the same sex since the beginning. Only now, in modern times, have we allowed the LGBT+ (Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, and plus.) to be seen as equals in the eyes of the law. Yet, these strides towards equality have not been without its sacrifices. It is believed by many that the modern day LGBT+ movement was sparked by the Stonewall Riots. As a result, the Stonewall riots proved to homosexuals that they were persecuted and maltreated. It pushed those who were still reluctant, and someone whom I was quite close to, to finally start believing that it was time to speak up for their rights. For eons, homosexuals have lived in fear: a fear of coming out and showing the world their true, raw selves. They have been tormented and looked down on for living lifestyles different than the "traditional" way. There are numerous reasons why homosexuals choose to keep their true selves hidden behind a forced facade. Unfortunately, this is because of the fact that many people in the past, and present, think lesbians and gay men have psychological problems. Thus, they are seen as a danger to the public. One notable drag queen, stopped and posed, only to get pushed roughly into the wagon by police. This is when the crowd noticeably got angrier, and began to throw trash and stones. (Truscott). "A number of incidents were happening simultaneously. There was no one thing that happened or one person, there was just... a flash of group, of mass anger" (Wright). It is agreed on though, that as the mass of people grew, so did the collective anger of the people. "Gay people were pissed off that the Stonewall had been busted and its patrons had been arrested and harassed by the cops. There was a riot going on. They weren't going to take it anymore." (Truscott). While the riot grew over a span of 45 minutes, it lasted for six days. "A multiracial lot of poor gay teens, many living on the streets because they had been tossed out of homes or ran away from abuse, taunted the cops with abandon. • 27. May Day Riot Of 1517 Essay Throughout the 'Early Modern World', a huge variety of factors such as economic, environmental, social and political meant for a shift in culture which in turn provoked protest throughout the period. There was a common split in communities and the divide was simple; those that feared change and wanted aspects of life to stay the same and those that favoured the shift into a more modern era. Historians therefore have debated whether or not protests during this period were due to a growing sense of community, or that an expression of community was simply a by–product of other reasons for protest such as economic discontent or xenophobic attacks on foreigners. One must therefore reinforce the statement that the Evil May Day Riot of 1517 was indeed due to wider factors and not primarily an expression of community. In conclusion, the protest that took place in 1517 was indeed instigated by xenophobic leaders that utilised foreign workers as scapegoats and within the protest one could argue that there were some aspects of community. Having said this, the protest was clearly a by–product of economic and social discontent that did not represent the whole community at all. • 33. The Violence Of The Watts Riot The 1960s was a time for change. It promoted on going expectations of equality for all races. This proved to be difficult for minorities. In August of 1965, civil unrest broke out, which lead to six–day revolt called the Watts Riot. Nearly thirty years later another riot broke out which caused even greater damage and left an even greater impact in our history, the Rodney King Riots. Both of these events share similar qualities and devastating damages, however, their meanings are much harder to decipher from one another. These impactful events in our society demonstrate how much there needs to change in our society, especially when dealing with minorities. The Watts riots began in the summer of 1965, in a city in Los Angeles called Watts. It all began with the arrest of a young African American by a white California Highway Patrol officer. Now, it was not because he was arrested for already doing something illegal, it was for the way the police officer treated the individual. According to Lacine Holland, an eyewitness to the arrest, the officer "took him and threw him in the car like a bag of laundry and kicked his feet in and slammed the door." (Flournoy) This caused lots of unrest among the fellow residents of Watts. This was just the beginning of years of pent up oppression for the minorities, which participated in the event. Similarly, in 1992, the Rodney King riots also arose due to the acquittal of four Los Angeles Police Department officers for their brutal beating ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Comparison: The Baltimore And 1968s Riots A riot means a violent disturbance of the peace by a crowd. Like the two riots we are going to see that happened in Baltimore City. Recently Baltimore had a riot but that wasn't the first riot that Baltimore had, in 1968 there was a riot and this year 2015 another riot happened. The Baltimore riots are proof that things do stay the same. In the 1968 and th 2015 riots there are some similarities both riots started peacefully then turned to violence, in the 1968s the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Tennessee triggered the 1968sriot and In 2015 Freddie Gray, a 25–year–old Black man who was a resident of Baltimore was harshly beat and arrested and placed in a police van without the seatbelt on him and a week later he died the officers were responsible for his death. As I say on the top both riot started peacefully protests in the 1968s riot children were also involved in demonstrations. In the 2015 riot mostly adults between 20 to 30– years–old were involved. In the 1968s riot residents were upset about poverty and suffering from the riot and in the 2015s riot residents feared living their homes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Crimes are high, places where schools are weak, unemployment is high and still there is a lot of segregation this makes Baltimore not a good place for young black makes to grow up. It is another thing entirely to pick up a picket sign and support it in public to stand together with others to represent a movement. Demonstrations make the cause feel more real to participants. Demonstrations put warm bodies and heavy feet out there representing an issue, taking up real space and real time, attaching the cause to real faces and real voices who care enough about the cause to go out there (Head "Why Protest Events Are Not a Waste of Time). A successful demonstration energizes participants. It causes people to get excited over their cause. People feel as though their voices are being heard. Demonstrations make people feel proud and good about themselves because they took a stand on an issue. A good demonstration has an almost religious effect on people, charging their batteries and inspiring them to get up and fight again another day (Head "Why Protest Events Are Not a Waste of Time). The religious effect is very helpful to the demonstrators giving them a reason to fight for their cause. It is very helpful for veteran activists because it gives them a second wind which is just as helpful to the cause. It is when demonstrations become violent that change does not happen. When demonstrations become violent they are know to be riots. • 36. Causes Of The London Riots On August 6th 2011, riots started in Tottenham, London, over the fatal shooting of Mark Duggan by the police. Protesters attacked the police station and its officers. Over the next 3 days the rioting, looting, arson, criminal damage and assault rapidly spread throughout London and England. The speed at which the riots spread caught those in charge off guard so they didn't call for reinforcements fast enough. This meant there were insufficient numbers of police officers on the streets to stop the rioters. The police emergency plans already in place to deal with such a situation were not adapted quickly enough to bring the disorder under control. It took three days before 16,000 police officers brought an end to the violence. During the London riots it was important that the strategic team (Gold) were able to use the command and control system to make the right decisions for the officers on the ground so they could carry out their duties efficiently and effectively. Officers on the front lines of the riots were dependant on those in charge keeping them informed on where the riots were breaking out and which streets were safe for them to use. Due to a major failure in their new communication systems their radios were not working and at one point those in command had no communication with their operational teams so they had no idea how many officers were on duty, which led to a lot of confusion as personnel had no idea which commander they had to report to. You were sittin' home watchin' your TV, while I was paticipatin' in some anarchy," these are the lyrics Sublime uses in their song 'April 26, 1992' to describe what happened during the Los Angeles Riots of 1992. "First spot we hit it was my liquor store. I finally got all that alcohol I can't afford. With red lights flashin' time to retire, And then we turned that liquor store into a structure fire," people ,running through the streets, had no pity when demolishing small businesses and taking what ever they may want from them. That was not enough for some officers they believed King was resisting arrest. Due to their belief some cops shot Rodney with a taser gun. Shortly several officers started to fiercely beat King with their batons. "We won that game didn't we," says officer Laurence Powell to his mates. George Holliday, a men standing near the scene, video tapped the action. Rapidly this video was broadcasted not only across America but around the world. It would not be ignored by its viewers. Everyone who tuned in and watched was shocked. Justice was expected to be made towards the heartless cops who savagely bet Rodney King. When the judge, Bernard Kamins, who was Caucasian declared three of the four (also white) officers not guilty the public saw his decision very racist. The riots began in the evening after the judgment, and grew over the next two days, but they would continue for several days. Angry Los Angels residents went out to the streets to show their fury. "These people are angry and they have every right to be!" said a man to the news cameras during the destruction. Authorities failed miserably to control the people. As time went by the madness did not decrease but enlarged. The second day (Thursday, April 30, 1992) of rioting, the storekeepers did not stay put, but fought back to protect their shops. • 38. Scarcity Riots Of England During The Period Of Spring 1801... The collection of documents creates an image of scarcity riots happening across the South west of England during the period of spring 1801. At same time England was facing economic hardship because of constant high taxation as a result of the war with France. The country was in the midst of crop shortages caused by the poor harvest in the previous year of 1799. The current years were also being shaped by the ideas of Scottish moral philosopher Adam Smith's 'Wealth of Nations' which pushed ideas of free trade. These ideas were meant to causemarket contention resulting in market prices naturally decreasing, but due to the current economic situation of low wages and shortages prices continued to be high. Which is why there was social unrest surrounding the market place, with the last scarcity riot only being 4 years prior. The south ranging from Plymouth in Devon through Somerset into Bristol was especially hard hit, due to its low prices at the start of the period. Following Adam Smith's theory many farmers were willing to venture further to achieve higher prices in different markets. This meant the South was relying solely on its own supplies, meaning great demand and little supply. It is this South dominated documentation that helps paint a picture of the dynamics that developed between the market, mob and magistrate. It shows the crowds action verse the magistrates reaction, and whether these varied from town to town. These primary sources can also be used to challenge or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. James Baldwin's Harlem Riots Essay Collecting the Harlem Riots ?It would have been better to have left the plate glass as it had been and the goods lying in the stores. It would have been better, but it would have also have been intolerable, for Harlem needed something to smash? This quote by James Baldwin pertains to his relevant thoughts on the Harlem Riots of 1943. A copy of Newsweek from August 9,1943 described theriot in great detail, ?Within a half hour Harlem?s hoodlums were on the march. Windows of pawnshops and liquor and grocery stores were smashed and looted. The Negroes began wielding knives and the police their guns? The Mayor also halted vehicle traffic except for service vehicles until everything had calmed down about two days after the riots. Stores closed either due to damage or due to fear of repetition of damage, and they did not reopen until about two days after as well. The Mayor also enacted prohibition throughout Harlem during and immediately following the riots (NY Times 8). La Guardia also brought emergency food supplies to relieve burned out shops and houses, which gained him popularity among the black population. The amount of damage the riots entailed not only affected the people and city of Harlem, but the race relations all over the country. The Harlem Riots had a definitive start, but the build up to rioting varied among the sources used. According to an article in the NY Times on August 5, 1943, ?The City Council who charged on Tuesday that Harlem had been starved of park and playground facilities? The City Council denied the charge that inadequate policing was responsible for the disorder.? This article stated that Harlem lacked the parks and recreation needs of its people and therefore caused the riot, along with the fact that police did not handle the situation correctly. There are some conflicting elements, when discussing how society can prevent similar problems in the future. Cameron expresses in text 1 that he wishes better parenting. Parents have to set boundaries with the purpose of children knowing the difference between right and wrong. His promised harsher consequences involving a higher fixing of sentence and tougher police tactics will maybe have a frightening effect on young people, but will not change their minds, if they are determined to participate in riots. Prevention costs less than punishment and is both the most humanitarian and the only sensible solution. It can be very stressful being a teenager with a cut in youth service spending by the government and increasing expectations and demands by the society. We need to invest in young people to create a feeling of stability and hope. Through interventions young people will be motivated and open their eyes to new opportunities. The government can take inspiration from Denmark, where we demand that young people are occupied with either school or work.
