My first year of school during a global pandemic, by Diana García
1. My very first year at school during the Covid-19 crisis
It has been kind of difficult for me to deal with the stress of tasks and
exams after so many months of lockdown. That is because I had got used
to doing everything at my own pace and organising my time the way I
wanted. In spite of this, when we started attending the high school again, I
didn’t feel it was any different at first, obviously leaving masks and social
distancing aside. However, as time went by, having to work so much without
any kind of trip in the meantime began to take a toll on me. Furthermore,
we have constantly been sent homework via Google Classroom, which has
contributed in some way to me being so overwhelmed all year long. I
understand that we had to upload some tasks to this platform to be better
evaluated, but it wasn’t all what we had to get done, as we were also asked
to do activities on a daily basis just like other school years, so the result
was a huge amount of homework to be finished on time.
Regarding isolation, I don’t think I have felt that alone. Sure, I haven’t got to
see some of my relatives as much as before the pandemic, but I have been
accompanied by my parents and siblings since it all started, which has
helped me cope with this situation in a better way. Moreover, the fact that
we were actually going to school made me realize that things weren’t
getting worse, because otherwise the confinement would have continued. I
know there have been some setbacks, such as when we had to stay home
and have online lessons at the very beginning of the second term, but we
have managed to overcome all of them and I’m very grateful for that.
