Editor's Notes

  1. Another strategy towards internationalization of higher educational institutions is through the establishment of international networks centered around common academic interests, expertise, advocacies or core values. This is not a new strategy but the academic interest or advocacy could be. Two such network are the Asian University Digital Resource Network on the advocacy for local knowledge through digital tools and Asia Pacific Network for International Education and Values Education. These are two networks which Miriam College has taken leadership. Thus, let me first introduce my institution.
  2. The International partnerships and programs Office takes care of our educational networks and of our international programs such as academic scholarships (inbound and outbound), academic exchange, internship, service-learning, study tours and short programs, workshops and conferences, and special projects.
  3. AUDRN is an innovative program of the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia, under its Local Knowledge Initiative. United Board is a Christian organization that works in partnership with higher education institutions in 13 countries and regions of Asia to express values such as justice, reconciliation and harmony between ethnic and religious communities, gender equity, care for the environment, and civil society.  The United Board operates as a programmatic, grant-making and grant-seeking organization. While we strive towards internationalization of universities, we need to be aware that there are dangers of homogenization of culture and globalization. The development and production of local knowledge, whether through the use of digital tools or traditional modes, can be an effective counterweight to these dangers . The goal of this initiative is to build capacity among faculty and staff of Asian higher education institutions for collecting, documenting and sharing local knowledge for use in teaching, research, and curriculum review.
  4. We have four thrusts.
  5. In the Philippines, there are 9 HEI which are the pioneer members of AUDRN—they are spread across the country. These are universities known for their local knowledge expertise and academic leadership in their communities.
  6. We have champions who are sustain the network in the field.
  7. To take leadership in AUDRN-Indonesia is Soegijapranata Catholic Unviversity, a United Board and Miriam College partner, which has shown expertise in local knowledge through its research and digital documentation, particularly in Javanese vernacular architecture.
  8. We held workshops: the first one hosted by Duta Wacana Christian University
  9. Then field camps and forums
  10. Followed by international events such as a conference workshop last year in Manila.
  11. With a presentation of research projects from five Asian countries and a field work exercise
  12. A recent AUDRN activity was in Semarang with an international camp hosted by SCU last May which resulted in my being invited here to talk with you.
  13. Completed researches include those with topics of traditional arts, coping strategies of indigenous people, one’s hometown, local food, a digital mapping project of endemic and indigenous plants and lullabies in a local Philippine dialect. Common among these researches was the use of digital tools for documenting and sharing. There are several researches recently approved and the topics involve cultural practices of indigenous peoples, spirituality, indigenous laws and healing, and environmental management using local knowledge.
  14. A community site at http://people.audrn.net is the platform for 230 AUDRN members to connect and share digital resources on local knowledge. This is open to academics interested in local knowledge.
  15. Two AUDRN social networking sites: an associated Facebook Fan page and a Twitter page operate as parallel information and communication touch points to promote AUDRN.
  16. Mahara e-portfolio http://firstconnexions.com/ub/audrn is an online social networking environment intended to improve communication, provide feedback and assist in the sharing of resources among different groups working on local knowledge projects. The network is intended to allow users to learn from diverse higher education institutions. You will find numerous free resources and topics that may be of interest, especially in the area of sharing Local Knowledge.
  17. Established in Seoul, Korea and founded by experts from 8 countries who were all united under the basic philosophy drawn from UNESCO's original mandate: Peace for Development and development for Peace and committed to the building of a peaceful and sustainable future through education for international understanding and values education.
  18. There are three active APNIEVE country chapters.
  19. APNIEVE has developed 4 sourcebook books: each sourcebook is inspired by the philosophy of lifelong learning, founded on the "FOUR PILLARS OF EDUCATION; Learning the Treasure within, Jacques Delors.
  20. The first two sourcebooks are out of print but are available online with the third sourcebook. The fourth sourcebook will soon be available online.
  21. The Rainbow of Peace: Learning to Sing for a Peaceful and Sustainable Future—a music book by Dr. Lourdes R. Quisumbing, APNIEVE Founding President. I will give copies of the last two sourcebooks and the music book with a CD to our organizer, Sam Ratulangi University.
  22. It is fitting that I end here. Both networks, AUDRN and APNIEVE work for the culture of peace—learning to live together in unity amidst diversity.
