6. Learning Competency
Recognize the formulas of common chemical
substances
1.Identify the difference between a cation and anion.
2.Identify the names of some simple binary compounds
3.Recognize the importance of chemical formulas.
7. 1.Which of the following is the
common name of NaCl?
A. Sugar
C. Water
B. Salt
D. Coffee
15. NOTE: Ions can be made up of one atom
(monoatomic) or more than one type of
atom (polyatomic).
16. Groups or families are shown as vertical columns.
There are 18 groups in the periodic table.
Elements in a group have similar electronic configurations
for their valence shell electrons. This is why elements in a
group have similar chemical properties.

21. Nomenclature Rules
Rules for naming three classes of compounds:
ionic compounds, binary covalent compounds & acids.
What type of compound is it?
COVALENT COMPOUND:
Nonionic – not composed of
cations & anions.
Generally, only nonmetals
are present.
IONIC COMPOUND:
Composed of cations
(metals or polyatomic
ions) and anions
(nonmetals or
polyatomic ions).
ACID:
Produces H+ in water.
Typically the
hydrogen cation is
written first in the
chemical formula.
22. 1.Rules in monoatomic ions
a. for Cations
• the name of the element is unchanged.
• if an element can form two ions of different charges,
the name, which is usually derived from its Latin name,
is modified by the suffix –ic for the ion with the higher
charge, and –ous for that with the lower charge.
b. For Anions
• the name of the element is modified by the suffix –ide.
23. 1.Name the following monoatomic cations:
a. Zn2+
b. Mg2+
c. K+
d. Fe2+
e. Fe3+
a. Zn2+ – zinc ion
b. Mg2+ – magnesium ion
c. K + – potassium ion
d. Fe2+ – ferrous ion or iron (II) ion
e. Fe3+ – ferric ion or iron(III) ion
24.
25. 2.Name the following monoatomic anions:
a. Br-
b. S2-
c. O2-
d. I-
a. Br- – bromide ion
b. S2- – sulfide ion
c. O2- – oxide ion
d. I- – iodide ion
26.
27. 2. Rules in naming polyatomic ion (ionic
binary compound)
a. The name of a compound with two elements has two words.
b. To get the first word, we use the name of the first element or
the element to the left of the formula.
c. To get the second word, we use the name of the second
element and change the suffix to "ide" at the end of the word.
example: NaCl is name sodium chloride.
1.Name the following polyatomic ion:
Sodium iodide
Potassium chloride
Berrylium sulfide
NaI -
KCl-
BeS
28.
29. 3. Rules in naming polyatomic ion (ionic binary compound containing a metal
ion with a variable charge)
a. Compounds of these metals with nonmetals are named with the same method as
compounds in the first category, except the charge of the metal ion is specified
by a Roman numeral in parentheses after the name of the metal.
b. The charge of the metal ion is determined from the formula of the compound
and the charge of the anion.
example: binary ionic compounds of iron and chlorine. Iron typically exhibits a charge of
either 2+ or 3+
FeCl2 is named iron (II) chloride
FeCl3 is named iron (III) chloride
CuCl
CuCl2
PbI2
PbI4
Copper (I) chloride
Copper (II) chloride
Lead (II) iodide
Lead (IV) iodide

31. Importance of Chemistry Formulas
Chemical Formula in Chemistry is like a shorthand
used to represent the elements in a compound. The
Periodic Table has elements along with the symbols.
Hence to know the nature of these chemical
compounds and their reactions, chemistry formulas play a
vital role. It gives an idea of how a substance has formed
and the proportion of elements involved in that particular
reaction.
