The Influence Of Drug Use And Abuse
Over the course of the last twenty years, drug usage has changed rather dramatically. From the kinds
of drugs used to their potencies to how much is used, there are multiple factors to observe. Some
drugs that didn't even exist or were almost unheard of that long ago are some of the most abused
today and are growing in popularity. In this essay I will be analyzing how people use drugs
differently today than they did 20 years ago, in 1997, as opposed to how it is used today in 2017. In
addition to this, we will be looking at how this change is affecting society and whether or not we're
better off than we were in the late 1990s. To begin, Let's observe drug usage and abuse in 1997. At
this time in the U.S, communities and society had begun ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Another newer drug and very dangerous drug to gain popularity is synthesized marijuana. Despite
all of this, many some drug usage and abuse hass decreased since 1997. Cocaine use is one of the
few that has gone down considerably, along with alcohol abuse some. Thanks to several anti–
tobacco campaigns and similar agendas, tobacco use amongst Americans is declining by quite a bit,
and even more rapidly with teens. To conclude, in 2017 thanks to the efforts of government
sponsored campaigns tobacco and alcohol abuse has decreased dramatically since the 1990s,
however newer and more powerful drugs like methamphetamine and synthesized marijuana have
gained in popularity over the course of 20 years, and other drugs including opioids and heroin the
like have grown to become the most dangerous and most used today. Now we will observe the
change in drug abuse from a direct source. When asked if drugs use has increased or decreased since
1997, both of my subjects agreed it had increased. When I asked what drugs in particular were more
popular, the interviewed went along with the research and said meth, as well as opioids like heroin.
In addition to this, both participants agreed drugs are more dangerous now more than ever. In
particular, one participant said heroin was the most dangerous drug right now, while the other said
heroin and synthetic marijuana. To conclude, the

Drugs And Prescription Drug Abuse
To illustrate the magnitude of the research problem and provide a frame of reference, this section
begins with a brief overview of the increased use of pharmaceuticals and prescription drug abuse in
the US. The section continues with the relationship between illicit drugs and prescriptions,
adolescents' abuse, personal and social factors; then concludes with the theoretical approach. The
Social–Ecological Theory, will be applied in researching prescription drug abuse, possible
influences and protective factors in adolescents in relation to prescription drug abuse, to develop
focused intervention strategies and educational programs for this population, similar to other
substances such as tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana.
Pharmaceuticals
The utilization of prescription drugs has increased across all age groups in the US, with 50% of
Americans taking at least one prescription drug (Rice & Unruh, 2016). This can be attributed to
physician–induced demand, substitution of pharmaceuticals for other medical regimens,
commercialization of the products, increase in the aging population and drug insurance coverage,
and also the increase in chronic conditions. Lathan discusses the startling fact that the rate increase
of prescription drugs purchased was considerably higher in contrast to the US population growth –
71% and 9% respectively (Rice & Unruh, 2016, p. 264).
The total spending on pharmaceuticals reported by CMS in 2014 was an astounding $263 billion (as
cited in Rice & Unruh,

Prescription Drug Abuse And Prescription Drugs
Prescription Drug Abuse Prescription Drug Abuse has increased in an alarming rate over recent
years! Prescription drug related deaths now outnumber those from heroin and cocaine combined.
The abuse in prescription drugs in America goes back more than a hundred years ago. Prescription
drug abuse is the use of a medication without a prescription, in a way other than prescribed, or for
the experience or feelings elicited. Although prescription medications are intended to help
individuals, they can sometimes become addictive and can induce serious side effects, changes in
behavior, and even death. From personal experience I know how dangerous Prescription Drug
Abuse can be. When I was younger, my brother Clay overdosed on Prescription Drugs. He went to a
"pharm party," also known as a "pill party." He was found passed out in a bedroom, and was put in a
car and taken to the hospital. He was then found to have no heartbeat and they had to cut off his
clothes and had to do the difibulizer. He is now in rehab doing much better. Everyday in the United
States 2,500 youth abuse a prescription pain reliever for the first time. Prescription drug abuse,
while most prevalent in the U.S., is a problem in many areas around the world including Europe,
Southern Africa, and Freesmeier 2
South Asia. In the United States alone, more than fifteen million people abuse prescription drugs,
more than the combined number who reported abusing cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants, and

The Drug Of Drug Abuse
Introduction Cocaine is an addictive drug that comes from the coca plant. How cocaine is made and
ingested are the primary differences between powdered and crack cocaine. It can be ingested in
multiple ways, but inhaling and smoking are the most common. Powdered cocaine is a white
substance that is snorted and absorbed through the nasal tissue. Crack cocaine is made by dissolving
cocaine with an alkaline (like baking soda), then it turns into a sheet that can be crushed out into
"rock" form. In 1986, Congress passed the Anti–Drug Abuse Act. Anyone caught with one gram of
crack cocaine would receive the same sentence as another caught with 100 grams of powdered
cocaine. Not too long after, Congress enacted a mandatory 5–year sentence for anyone caught with
50 grams of crack (500 grams of powdered) cocaine. Crack is punished this severely for many
reasons, mainly being considered more dangerous, addictive, and its involvement with gangs and
gun violence compared to powdered cocaine. My literature review will include how this disparity
has affected people of color, the changes in the laws, and changes in the prison system.
Literature Review Crack was said to be addictive from within its first use. Government sponsored
programs have shown that less than one in four try the drug again. Cocaine had many for legal
usages at the turn of the century. Cocaine was available in the United States and used in medicines,
tonics and soft drinks. Cocaine addictions begun to rise and

Marijuana And Drug Abuse
Deaths from drug abuse has outnumbered deaths of traffic accidents for young adults in the U.S.
"One American dies from a prescription drug overdose every 19 minutes." Usually the biggest
abusers of medications and prescriptions are from ages 18–25.
"Nearly 2/3 of those found in addiction recovery centers report sexual or physical abuse as children.
Studies show child abuse to be a major factor in later life drug addiction."
The THC that is found in Marijuana can be result of long–lasting effects even after the user has quit

Numerous individuals do not comprehend why individuals get to be dependent on drugs or how
drugs can change the mind to cultivate enthusiastic drug abuse. They erroneously view drug misuse
and dependence as entirely a social issue and may describe the individuals who take drugs as
ethically powerless (Alving, Matyas, Torres, Jalah, & Beck, 2014). One extremely regular belief is
that drugs abusers ought to have the capacity to stop taking drugs if they are willing to change their
conduct and be a member of society (Alvin et al., 2014). What individuals frequently underestimate

The sociological point of view stands contrary to what may be known as the chemicalistic
misrepresentation the perspective that drug (A) causes behavioral conduct X, that what we see as
conduct and impacts connected with a given medication are singularly or even basically a
component of the biochemical properties of that medication, of the medication in addition to the
human creature, or even of the medication in addition to a human organic entity with a certain
character structure (Primm, 1992). Drugs impacts and drug related conduct are massively entangled,
very variable, and dependent upon numerous things. Furthermore, the most imperative of these
things are social and context oriented in nature (Primm, 1992). In the creature world, it is a
considerable amount simpler to foresee what drugs will do; anyway, we must try many different
things with rats but it does not let us know all that much about human conduct (Primm, 1992). This
is the reason social setting is so vital.
The negative outcomes of medication misuse influence people who ill–use medicates as well as
their families and companions, different organizations, and government assets (Akindipe, Abiodun,
Adebajo, Lawal, & Rataemane, 2014). Albeit huge numbers of these impacts can 't be evaluated,
"Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) as of late in 2002 reported that, the monetary
expense of drug abuse within the United States was $180.9 billion" (Akindipe et al., 2014, Pg 250

For the research on drug use and societal or natural disaster, there is various findings on drug users'
lives, before and after disasters. This paper gives a broad explanation of their trauma & stress,
housing life styles, and health risk during times of disaster. These topics show the studies on people
whom partake in drugs such as Crack/Cocaine Heroine on the day–to–day basis. The researched for
this paper worked with the usagers directly to affect the health of those in these situations. Trauma
& Stress People that are users of drugs, and more specifically crack, heroine, and other cocaine
based drugs have various reasons for their continued drug use. One of the many reasons for these
drug users to abuse the drugs they use extend from earlier traumas and events in their lives. The
events of natural and unnatural disaster cause an immediate amount of stress for those whom fall in
this category. The people falling under this category not only have the stress from their past, present
events and possible disaster events, but also the high chance of mental illness. Fifty–four African–
Americans from New Orléans were compared to a sample of 162 people from Houston, in this study
that lasted from June 2002 to December 2005, there are no significant differences between the two
groups on either depression or anxiety, but the New Orléans sample scored higher on the self–
esteem scale and scored lower on the risk–taking scale (Timpson, Ratliff, Ross,

Drugs And Abuse Of Drugs
Drugs and Abuse Abuse of drugs can have effects on the user even after the use of drugs has
stopped. Different drugs produce different effects, depending on the user, type of drug, and severity
of abuse. New research is done every day in the area of drug abuse that makes finding accurate
results on the broad topic of drug abuse very difficult. From the most recent studies only can one
find data that is presently accepted as correct. These numerous studies provide enough data to
explain the effects of both legal and illegal drugs. To understand how drugs work, it is Important to
understand the changes that take place in different areas of the body when drugs take effect. Found
in the brain are the synapses, the interaction point of two neurons (Perrine, 1996). The synapses in
the brain are often the main target of a drug, altering the perception of something at the point of
perception. When a drug is taken, it attaches itself to receptors in the brain, which have a pattern
chemically similar to the neurotransmitters that send and receive messages in the brain. Certain
drugs can attach themselves to these receptors, they may become blocked, and the neurotransmitters
originally being sent by the brain 's neurons are forced to wander around the brain until it can find
another similar receptor, possibly creating a false signal (Perrine, 1996). The physiological
responses created by these false signals, sent by both the drug and the extraneous neurotransmitters
are what

Drug Abuse In Othello
William Shakespeare is responsible for coining the word addiction. Does this make him responsible
for everybody with an addiction? Shakespeare defined addiction as a devotion to a habit. Here's an
example of how Shakespeare utilized the term addiction in Othello, Act II, Scene II "It is Othello's
pleasure, our noble and valiant general, that, upon certain tidings now arrived, importing the mere
perdition of the Turkish fleet, every man put himself into triumph; some to dance, some to make
bonfires, each man to what sport and revels his addiction leads him." Through the years, there have
been many habits that are considered to be addictive. Most commonly known habit is substance
abuse. The reason people become addicted to substances ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Just because a person has factors that contribute to drug abuse doesn't mean that the person is
doomed to abuse drugs. Many people who have these factors never choose to use drugs at all, and
some people who choose to do so dabble only once, and they stop when the first experience is
negative. Many people who have addictions, make a conscious choices to engage in their destructive
behavior to deal with stress. Stress is the body's way of dealing with a demand. It involves the
release of different chemicals in the body so that it is prepared to take action. Stress activates the
hypothalamo–pituitary–adrenal axis and the sympathetic nervous system. This is what sets forth the
fight or flight reaction when there is a sense of danger. Self–medication is a situation where people
turn to alcohol or drugs in an attempt to manage their problems in life. Depressants like alcohol
produce a calming effect on the body, and so the individual will feel like they have escaped their
difficulties. They may start to take these substances more and more as a way to manage their stress
levels. This is dangerous because the self–medication can be far more damaging than the initial
stressor itself. Using alcohol or drugs to deal with stress is at best a short–term solution. Substance
abuse only masks the problem and doesn't solve it. It will be almost impossible for the individual to
learn better ways of managing stress while

Abuse Of Drug Abuse
Drug addiction within the healthcare has become a very important issue. Drug–addicted Doctors &
Health Care Professionals (2015) studied that "doctors and other health care workers are addicted to
drugs in the same proportion as the general population" (para, 1). Anesthesiologists, specifically,
continuously shows an increase rate of drug misuse. There are many factors that contribute to the
abuse of drugs to include: access to drugs, high stress environment, control–oriented personality.
The main drugs that are being abused are fentanyl, sufentanil, merperidine, and morphine (substance
abuse among anesthesiologists, 2012). The abuse of drugs by medical professionals causes many
patient related problems. The burden of this issue is that diseases may be spreaded. The way
physicians get by with using drugs is they inject the patient first, then themselves, and then the
patient again. In combination to the dilemma of infection, there is the issue of patients not getting all
the drugs they require. When drugs are shared between a medical professional and a patient, it is
known as drug diversion, which signifies that the patient who genuinely needs the sedative or
anodyne, or both is not receiving a full dose. In a case study at Community Hospital of the West,
Derek Jonson who is a physician and board certified to perform anesthesia procedures. These
procedures included Surgical and obstetrical. Derek Johnson has been an anesthesiologist at the
hospital for 15 years. For a

Stimulant drugs can be swallowed, injected in liquid or crushed and snorted. Depressant drugs slow
down the normal function of the central nervous system. Many people use depressant drugs for
medical reasons to help them relax muscles, calm nerves and for sleeping problems. Hallucinogen
drugs interfere with the brain and nervous system. Random images, sounds and sensations will be
experienced but will not exist. LSD, magic mushrooms and ketamine are only a few of this type of
drugs.

The Consequences Of Drug Abuse And Addiction
Drug abuse and addiction are controversial topics in modern society. In general, drug abuse leads to
drug addiction. Drug abuse can be defined as the overuse of drugs along with the process of
undergoing efforts to obtain drugs in an (usually) illegal manner, whereas drug addiction is the
inability to live without said drug and engaging in any attempts necessary to obtain them. Addicted
individuals engage in drug abuse. The two concepts tend to go together, ruining relationships by
becoming the most important thing in the life of someone afflicted with this disease. Most people
who find themselves addicted to drugs often seek treatment but end up procrastinating any options
to do so and ultimately remain in this harmful cycle.
To determine if an individual is abusing drugs, it is important to compare the person's previous
behavior with their current behavior. This can be difficult as many addicts tend to distance
themselves from their friends and families early on to the point where anyone close to them may not
be able to notice a significant change. It could also be useful to track an individual's history at
pharmacies to check for possible prescription drug abuse and at convenience stores to check for
possible alcohol and cigarette purchases. Quantifying a concept such as drug abuse is difficult but
not impossible. One potential quantification method could occur via the administration of a survey
regarding respondents' feelings about specific drugs as well as their

This gives birth to the antisocial activities such as robbery, physical abuse, snatching and many

There is not only one theory that why people become addictive to drugs, however there is always a
combinations of many factors. Here are the major two theories as to why this social problem of drug
abuse exists in the society. Firstly, The genetic theory (Schukit. P.no 452." Theories On Drug
Abuse") is related to biological aspects. Genetic factor plays a pivotal role in the physiological drive
of an individual. Genetic theory means transmission of genes to children by their parents. An
individual may become addictive to the substance if any of his ancestor was also addicted to that
same substance. Secondly, Self–esteem theory (Howar B. Kaplan,Phd. Pno157. "Theories On Drug
Abuse"), this theory is based upon self–esteem motives. The key variables of self–esteem theory are
drug availability, feelings of inferiority or superiority, social pressure/acceptability, coping
mechanism, immediate gratification and life style. People falls under the theory of self–esteem
become dependents of illicit substances like hallucinogens, barbiturates, amphetamines, marijuana
and alcohol. These substances are observed as an alternative action to self–rejecting attitudes.
At three levels the social issue of drug and addiction can be seen in society. These three levels are
Micro, Macro and Meso. The social issue under Micro level theory of drug abuse and addiction

Illicit Drugs : The Negative Effects Of Drug Abuse
Illicit drugs are on the rise, causing major negative effects on society. Users can travel down
different paths of life. They can either; go to prison, rehab, or they can become homeless surrounded
by others who often use drugs. The government is pressuring users by sending them to prison to
punish them, not considering after they get out of prison many employers would not want past drug
users because of how the government handles them. This social issue is considered a serious issue
because users are often harming themselves and those around them. The family and friends are
trying to help the user become clean but sometimes the family members can abandon their family,
leaving them to cope with their addiction by themselves. It is reported that in 2013, there was an
estimated 24.6 million American citizens, aged 12 and older, who had confirmed that they have used
an illicit drugs, of any kind, in the past month. The percentage has increased from 8.3% in 2002 to
9.4% in 2013. One of the most abused drug in America is prescription drugs. Most people who often
overuse prescription medicine is those who get it legally by their doctor. The National Institute on
Drug Abuse states, "For most age groups, men have higher rates of use or dependence on illicit
drugs and alcohol than do women. However, women are just as likely as men to become addicted.
In addition, women may be more susceptible to craving and relapse–" (NIDA, 2016). Men are more
likely to attend prison for drug abuse

RE: Scenario C–Health and harm reduction
DATE: 19 October 2013
Introduction
North–east (NE) India is connected to remaining part of India through a constricted passage known
as Siliguri Corridor squeezed between Nepal and Bangladesh (Hussain, 2011). It comprises of seven
sister states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura.
The region shares more than 4500 km of international border with China, Myanmar, Bangladesh
and Bhutan. The region is presently facing acute problem of drug addicts who operate in groups and

Sources reveal the trans–border smuggling routes starting from Khamti (Myanmar) to Noklak and
Mokokchung in Nagaland (India), from Mandalay (Myanmar) via Tamu to Moreh in Manipur
(India) and from Homalin (Myanmar) to Kohima (India) (Dolabhai, 2003).
Recommendations
The present scenario of drug abuse in NE India is very alarming as the future of the states is in ruin.
Three simultaneous actions are recommended to resolve the problem. These are checking the trans–
border smuggling of drugs, tackling the existing drug users and deterring fresh case. These can be
implemented through strict vigil, Systematic De–addiction and Rehabilitation Programme (SDRP)
and by generating scope for healthy livelihood.
Strict Vigil The very first challenge is to impose strict check at the international borders again drug
trafficking. The second challenge is to increase awareness regarding the adverse effect of drug abuse
through mass campaigning. Young Mizo Association (YMA), a local organization created by the
youths of Mizoram observed that drug abuse cases in the state in decline. Since 2004, 143 drugs
related death case has been reported and by June 2008, the same has come down to only four.
However, harsh punishment method employed by YMA called 'Supply Reduction Service' drew flak
from many quarters including the local media the human rights activists. (Outlook India, 2008)

Thesis: Drug abuse, also known as substance abuse, is a patterned use of a drug in which the user
consumes the substance in amounts or with methods which are harmful to themselves or others.
Many teens turn to marijuana, prescription drugs, club drugs, alcohol, or other substances as a
means of coping with stress, peer influence, and failure of parents to prevent their children from
making unreasonable decisions.
According to the yearly "Monitoring the Future" survey of high school age teenagers in the United
States, by the time our kids complete high school, a minimum of 40 percent have consumed an
illicit drug and 70 percent have consumed alcohol.

at higher risk for emotional, physical and mental health problems. Because parents who abuse
alcohol or other drugs are more likely to be involved with domestic violence, divorce,

The Drug Of Drug Abuse
America has been fighting drug abuse for over a century. Four Presidents have waged a "War on
Drugs" and unfortunately, this war continues to be lost at an alarming magnitude. Drug abusers
continue to fill our courts, hospitals, and prisons. The drug trade causes violent crime that ravages
our neighborhoods. Children of drug abusers are neglected, abused, and even abandoned. The
current methods of dealing with this issue are not working. Our society needs to implement new and
effective laws and programs to address the problem of drug abuse. Drugs first surfaced in the United
States in the 1800's, with the use of opium during and after the Civil War. Cocaine followed in the
1880's and the abuse of these drugs at the end of the 19th century reached epidemic proportions.
Morphine was discovered in 1906 and soon became a huge problem as well. Drugs were no longer
being viewed as harmless remedies for aches and pains. The Harrison Narcotics Act, passed in 1914,
was the United States' first federal drug policy. The aggressively enforced act restricted the
manufacture and sale of marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and morphine. During this time there was a
worldwide movement limiting opium and coca crops and by World War II, American drug use had
become a rare, marginal social problem. During the 1960s, drugs like marijuana, amphetamines, and
psychedelics were developed and a new generation was exposed to drugs. Marijuana became
fashionable on college campuses and users sought to expand

Abuse Of Prescription Drug Abuse
When people hear of prescription drug abuse they think of people that do not have a prescription
using the drug for other reasons but this is not always the case. People that get a prescription, may
abuse it by misuse of selling them, or by over use. Many different types of prescription drugs are
very addictive and used out of control. They can have some serious effects on a person.
Why does so many people abuse prescription drugs? Some will say it is safer than street drugs since
it is FDA approved. Is it because prescription drugs are easier to get a hold of and sometimes
cheaper? Some believe it is safe for them to consume because it was given to them by a Physician.
That is not the case many Doctors have given out medication because the patient will come in
knowing what symptoms to say to get what they need. In today's time, it is so easy to run to the
doctor and get some sort of prescription drug. It does not take much to get one, most doctors today
do not even try to find the main cause to the problem they just write a prescription and send a person
on their way. This is a one major problem that leads to abuse of prescription drugs. Why would

Also, most teenagers are students. They are probably facing a lot of pressure for their academic
performance. These ideas could explain that most teenage drug abusers came from inharmonic
families or performed badly in school. Perhaps, they are just trying to have a moment of peace. If
we want to tackle the problem of teenage drug abuse, we have to deal with the base of the problem,
the inharmonic families or the high pressure from school work.
Causes of Abuse and Difficulties of Giving Up The causes of teenage drug abuse are mainly the
inquisitiveness, desire of high feeling, peer effect and negative emotions of the abusers according to
the article. The intentions of several respondents using cough syrup A–K are being found out
through interviews and thorough study of their cases. For many of those interviewees, they start
taking drugs because they are interested in the feeling of taking drugs. Usually, they will get a high
feeling when they take drugs. This feeling is a main reason for the teenage drug abuse. Many
teenagers have an emotion of sadness from their parents, schools and friends. They want to release
the bad feeling through these means. The "high feeling" from the drugs make the teenagers get
addicted. Moreover, the peer influence is another major reason. They don't want to be teased as
weak and cowardly. Even though they know that it is wrong, they will still try it. Most of the time,

Drugs And Drug Abuse
Like most opiates heroin is a highly addictive drug because it gives off feelings of euphoria and
pleasure. Overdoses are common with heroin because as users continue they build up a tolerance.
This tolerance requires higher quantity of drugs at one time and more frequent usage. When users
increase the amount they use in order to reach the same high as before they risk the chance of
overdosing. Addicts need to continually use heroin because withdrawal symptoms are like that of
having the flu. Symptoms include restlessness, muscle and bone pain, cold flashes, diarrhea and
vomiting, and cravings. (DrugAbuse.Gov)
Overdose rates among heroin users are some of the highest among any abused drug. In 2016 49,000
of 70,000 total overdoses were attributed to opioids. (Center for Disease Control) Opioids are the
broader group of substances that heroin falls under. What is causing this high rate of overdose?
Much can be attributed to the widespread usage of fentanyl lately. Heroin dealers have been
utilizing fentanyl in order to strengthen their supply of heroin cheaply. Below is a photo provided by
the New Hampshire State Police that visualizes the amounts of each substance it takes to lethally
kill a male.
When users overdose on heroin their last hope is intervention by someone with training and
equipped with an overdose reversal drug. One of the most popular reversal drug is narcan. Narcan

Teen Drug Abuse
Did you know that the teen Drug and Alcohol abuse rate have increased over the past 10 years? 1
out of every 10 teens use non prescribed prescription drugs. Teens are abusing drugs and using them
as relief outlets. They often start using the drugs under peer pressure, to cope with a problem or to
cope with depression. People can find different ways to cope and quit their addictive habits and find
something different to do. You become 5% more likely to become addicted in adulthood. Studies
have shown that you are 3% more likely to self harm. Drug abuse under ages of 18 can permanently
affect and change your brain. It can cause you to be delusional and can't remember what happened
when you were under the influence. It causes you to do poorly in school , diminishes good
performance and can keep you from being employed. It can also cost you your life if you are driving
under the influences. Studies have shown that 467,000 kids ages 12–17 have used the drugs for
nonmedical purposes and 168,000 claim to be addicted.

Drug Abuse And Its Effects
There have been many drugs created over the years to help lessen or diminish sicknesses. However,
there are people that have abused these drugs to reach a certain high and this is considered abuse.
The people that do this could do it out of boredom or curiosity. Some may even feel that it will help
them escape from the problems that they are faced with or fill a void in their life. No matter what
the reasoning is for them the outcome remains the same. The body becomes used to the drugs they
are abusing and the person becomes addicted. The definition of drug abuse according to the
University of Maryland Medical Center is "the recurrent use of illegal drugs, or the misuse of

The user could show a lack of energy and motivation. The drug user may go through extremes to not
let anyone in his or her room. This could be where they store their drugs or use their drugs. Family
members and friends may notice that the relationship they have with the user is strained and distant.
When someone uses drugs they are putting chemicals in their body that should not be there. The
drugs are not meant to be there. The effects of this abuse could be detrimental on the body. The
main organ in the body that the chemicals will affect is the brain. The brain is the most complex
organ of the body and the effects of the abuse could possibly last the lifetime of that person. Once
the drugs are entered into the body's system they change the way the brain performs. Other than
affecting the brain the chemicals can cause serious health problems. A few to mention are a
weakened immune system, cardiovascular conditions, nausea, liver failure, seizures, and stroke
(Effects of Drug Abuse and Addiction). It will be different with each user how the drugs will affect
their body.
There is no single factor that can foretell whether a person will become addicted to drugs or not.
Some may be able to use and not become addicted. A persons' family history plays a huge role in
this factor. If a child grows up watching one or both of their parents use he or she may think that this
is a normal way of life and begin using on their own. Something else to be considered into

Statistics Regarding LGBT Drug Abuse

statistics:
Gay and transgender men smoke tobacco 200% more often than heterosexual men – similar

right down to its deepest core by the ever enlarged immoral plague of drug misuse. In this society of
ever growing human rights and of an increasing freedom of choice, we are presumed to observe and

which are deliberated to function as a guide to all, presenting what is considered to be the

Throughout America, illegal narcotics and substances are increasingly accessible to everyone of any

Illegal Drug Abuse And Drugs
Illegal Drug Abuse
For quite a long time, different types of drugs have been used across the globe. Indeed, the different
drugs have been observed to impose varying impacts on users. While some of the drugs are curative
and positive in usage, others are remarkably detrimental and can facilitate the mental and
psychological breakdown of the user and their families. In this respect, many of the detrimental
drugs have been illegalized in many parts of the world. In the United States, for instance, cocaine,
cannabis and amphetamines remain prohibited in attempt to curb their usage. Based on statistics
United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, however, the motive of the prohibition is hardly being
realized. Illicit use of the drugs has been observed to be on the rise across the globe, with an
estimated 230 million people purported to have engaged in illegal drug use at some stage in their
life (Narconon 3). Worryingly, most of the users happen to be the youthful generations. To this end,
this article discusses the various challenges faced by the families of illicit abusers of illegalized
drugs.
To begin with, illicit drug abuse has been implicated in disintegration of many families (Visser 1).
Notably, the addicts are often restless and violent. As such, they are hardly able to engage other
family members in constructive discussions. Moreover, the addicts are hardly able to contribute to
the economic stability of the family. In cases where the addicts are employed, most of their

Only drugs that actually contain addictive substances can cause physical addictions and once
addicted it can be very hard for a person to stop.
Some drugs however can still cause an addiction even if the drug itself has no addictive properties
inside it. Unlike with a physical addiction a person with a psychological addiction will not actually
have a reaction in their body due to not having the drug but they can still mentally develop an
extreme want for it. Psychological addictions are more common in people who abuse drugs like
marijuana. Marijuana itself has no substance inside of it that are actually addictive but the brain can
still develop a desire for the dopamine that marijuana releases making a person want to do it. Some
people say that this is not a real addiction however because a person can develop a psychological
addiction to anything. A person with a psychological addiction can usually just kick the addiction
themselves or have a friend help monitor them but sometimes seek professional help anyways.
Although not as severe as a physical addiction a psychological addiction can still negatively affect a
persons life.

addictions can not be spotted unless a person knows the symptoms of an addiction. People with

Drug Abuse in the NFL What is the definition of drugs? Is it the simple explanation of a substance
we consume that is alien to our bodies, for better or worse? Or is it much more complicated than
that? Many would agree that people use them as an escape from reality, a way to hide their pain in
life, or a way to deal with stress. People who use illegal drugs for their own benefit, whether it's for
stress release or for performance enhancement, are drug abusers. In today's society drug abuse is

In recent months leading up to now, there have been quite a few cases of players abusing drugs,
which have led the NFL to consider changes to the policy. There are a handful of specific areas that
have been revised recently; these include HGH
Testing, Appeals, DUI Discipline, PED Discipline, Marijuana Threshold, and Marijuana
Discipline (DUI and PED discipline has been ramped up, and marijuana policy is more lax). The
NFL wanted to ease up on the punishments given out on marijuana abuse, and focus on cracking
down on DUI's and PED's. The punishments given are varied by what offense the player commits.
For one of the most popular of drugs, marijuana, a first time offender will be placed in a substance
abuse program without any suspension. A second offense leads to a two game fine. Each additional
violation leads to a four game fine, a four game suspension, and then a 10 game suspension. So, a
player can test positive for marijuana three times without getting suspended (DUI and PED
discipline has been ramped up, and marijuana policy is more lax). With DUI's however, the league
has become stricter. In the past, a first time offender was not suspended. Today you get a two game
ban for your first violation. Second time offenders get an 8 game suspension and aggravating
circumstances can lengthen the suspension. (DUI and PED discipline has been ramped up, and
marijuana policy is more lax). As for

Prescription drug abuse is increasing rapidly and especially in the teen community. It's not only in
the teen community but it is estimated 52 million people use prescription drugs for non–medical
reasons in their lifetime (Cite Source: searching for answers.) Medical professionals are now trying
to learn the symptoms/tricks of someone who is trying to get a prescription for a non–medical use.
Not only is this deviant in the medical field but also falls into the deviant behaviors of the person in
the street using or selling a prescription drug.
One thing can be misinterpreted is that if you have a prescription it is not illegal for you to have. So,
if you also have refills that your doctor wrote for you that is just enabling the addiction for someone
that does not need them for a medical reason. The part where it becomes illegal is people are selling
their prescription to other people for their own use. The 3 most common controlled prescription
drugs abused are opiates, sedative–hypnotics, and stimulants. Many teenagers believe that
prescription drugs are safer than street drugs and that they are not addictive (Cite Source: searching

as a drug even though it can have the same effects as other drugs. There are some doctors that are

Persuasive Essay On Drug Abuse
Over the last few decades, law enforcement and the government has focused on reducing and or
eliminating drug use in the United States. The 1980" s fight against drugs saw the implementation of
the Drug Awareness Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program and after school specials. While the
two were supported largely by the communities, there has not been clear cut evidence of the
programs succeeding due to a lack of a control group (Kochis, 1995). D.A.R.E. along with the
afterschool programs are geared towards elementary and middle school aged children as a method
of drug deterrence however do not address drug use issues with older teens and young adults. In
recent years, teen and young adult drug use/abuse has increased. Also, the increase in drug use has
led to an increase in crime (Hawaii Mobilizes, 2003). Those teens and adults caught with illegal
substances or commit crimes due to drug use, can be sentenced to jail time which lead to an increase
in jail and prison populations. The issue with imprisonment for drug charges is the court system is
"warehousing people in jail, where we are in fact not curing the problem [drug use/abuse] but
having temporary stops or suspensions" (Reid, 2004). All the while, people in our communities are
asking for solutions to the drug and crime problems in their neighborhoods. Several communities
and states have attempted different programs with some success in an effort to reduce or eliminate

Abuse Of Drug Abuse
INTRODUCTION All societies in the world has been battling the increase in the criminal activities
in their cities, towns, counties and suburbs on daily basis, and these activities can only be reduced
drastically if the factor motivating groups or individuals committing this crime can be identified.
The abusive use of drugs has always been on the increase in recent years among teenagers and led to
it being addictive which makes them have no control over it and thereby making the behave in a
way that is tagged antisocial. Drug abuse also known as substance abuse as defined in Wikipedia is
a patterned use of drug in which the user consumes the substance in amounts or with methods which
are harmful to themselves or to others. While drug addiction is condition where an individual feels a

However, it's estimated that twenty percent of people in the United States alone have used
prescription drugs for non–medical reasons.1 Prescription drug abuse is a serious and growing
problem that often goes unnoticed. Abusing these drugs can often lead to addiction and even death.

For instance, some people mix alcohol and Valium, both of which can slow breathing. The
combination of the two could stop breathing altogether.4 Cough and cold medications are some of
the most commonly abused over the counter medications. They contain an ingredient called
dextromethorphan. However, to get to the "high" craved by people who use drugs, large quantities
are needed. At high doses, dextromethorphan causes side effects similar to those of the drugs
Ketamine, or PCP, by affecting similar sites to the brain. Ketamine and PCP are considered
"dissociative" drugs, which make people feel disconnected from their normal selves. When taken as
directed, over the counter drugs are safe and effective, but high doses can cause problems. It's
always important to read the bottle labels and take over the counter medications only as directed.4
Not all prescription drugs have the potential for abuse and addiction. Many drugs don't even act in
the brain. For example, antibiotics are not addictive. On the rare occasion people who take drugs for
medical conditions may become addicted. This is why it is extremely important to be under a
doctor's care while taking prescription medication.4 Most prescription drugs are taken in a form that
gets to the brain slowly at a dose that treats a problem, but doesn't overwhelm the system. Both of
which reduce the likelihood of an addiction. Long–term medical use of prescription drugs can

As the problem progresses problems start to develop at work and in other situations. Families should
try to keep as much normal activities in their life as possible. The family needs to take care of the
family in every way possible and in everything that they do. Families should make boundaries and
ask for support by getting people to listen to them, and who will understand what they are going
through. Little, M.A. (2010) Violence in a family can be connected to drug abuse in different ways.
The National Council on Alcoholism and drug abuse states "substance abuse does not cause family
violence nor does family violence lead to substance abuse," but there is a connection and they both
affect each other. The affects that drug abuse has on society is seen in many ways. It can cost
someone's work because of them taking so much time off, and not working up to their level of work.
Drug abuse causes accidents and also endangers others in and around the abuser. Young children are
affected in neighborhoods because they are asked to be a lookout for the drug abuser. It increases
the homeless numbers. The cost it causes because of abusers serving a prison term and the state
having to foot the bill, the money spent on trying to prevent drug use and abuse, and the cost of
health care to an abuser. When a drug addict uses for a long period of time they may experience

Every year, teens and adults abuse over the counter (OTC) drugs. Drugs that are accessible through
local pharmacies and drug stores. Supplements like these are developed to help and aid the user,
however, they are abused commonly. This can lead to serious physical and mental injuries when not
used correctly. At worst cases, it results in death. In the past, many celebrities and role models for
kids such as Prince, Michael Jackson and even Drake have used or written about using OTC drugs.
Because of this, kids think it is okay to use OTC drugs and believe it is "cool". Therefore, by raising

over the counter drugs are left out of the discourse. A study done by Partnership for a Drug–Free
America, 2009 revealed that 15% of youth reported that the problems of OTC drugs were discussed

Many people do not understand why individuals become addicted to drugs or how drugs change the
brain to foster compulsive drug abuse. They mistakenly view drug abuse and addiction as strictly a
social problem and may characterize those who take drugs as morally weak. One very common
belief is that drug abusers should be able to just stop taking drugs if they are only willing to change
their behavior. What people often underestimate is the complexity of drug addiction–that it is a
disease that impacts the brain and because of that, stopping drug abuse is not simply a matter of
willpower. Through scientific advances we now know much more about how exactly drugs work in

As a result, dopamine's impact on the reward circuit is lessened, reducing the abuser's ability to
enjoy the drugs and the things that previously brought pleasure. This decrease compels those
addicted to drugs to keep abusing drugs in order to attempt to bring their dopamine function back to
normal. And, they may now require larger amounts of the drug than they first did to achieve the
dopamine high–an effect known as tolerance.Long–term abuse causes changes in other brain
chemical systems and circuits as well. Glutamate is a neurotransmitter that influences the reward
circuit and the ability to learn. When the optimal concentration of glutamate is altered by drug
abuse, the brain attempts to compensate, which can impair cognitive function. Drugs of abuse
facilitate nonconscious (conditioned) learning, which leads the user to experience uncontrollable
cravings when they see a place or person they associate with the drug experience, even when the
drug itself is not available. Brain imaging studies of drug–addicted individuals show changes in
areas of the brain that are critical to judgment, decisionmaking, learning and memory, and behavior
control. Together, these changes can drive an abuser to seek out and take drugs compulsively despite
adverse consequences–in other words, to become addicted to drugs.

Anyone who starts to abuse hard drugs such as Crack or Heroin can run into serious health issues.
They are addicting and dangerous substances which can cause major long term damage, sometimes
the damage in irreversible if the situation has gone to far. Substances that your body does not want
are being injected directly into your bloodstream, not only is the risk of illness phenomenally high

There are many reasons as to why the victim may have died from shooting up. The batch that was

The Influence Of Drug Use And Abuse

  • 1. The Influence Of Drug Use And Abuse Over the course of the last twenty years, drug usage has changed rather dramatically. From the kinds of drugs used to their potencies to how much is used, there are multiple factors to observe. Some drugs that didn't even exist or were almost unheard of that long ago are some of the most abused today and are growing in popularity. In this essay I will be analyzing how people use drugs differently today than they did 20 years ago, in 1997, as opposed to how it is used today in 2017. In addition to this, we will be looking at how this change is affecting society and whether or not we're better off than we were in the late 1990s. To begin, Let's observe drug usage and abuse in 1997. At this time in the U.S, communities and society had begun ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another newer drug and very dangerous drug to gain popularity is synthesized marijuana. Despite all of this, many some drug usage and abuse hass decreased since 1997. Cocaine use is one of the few that has gone down considerably, along with alcohol abuse some. Thanks to several anti– tobacco campaigns and similar agendas, tobacco use amongst Americans is declining by quite a bit, and even more rapidly with teens. To conclude, in 2017 thanks to the efforts of government sponsored campaigns tobacco and alcohol abuse has decreased dramatically since the 1990s, however newer and more powerful drugs like methamphetamine and synthesized marijuana have gained in popularity over the course of 20 years, and other drugs including opioids and heroin the like have grown to become the most dangerous and most used today. Now we will observe the change in drug abuse from a direct source. When asked if drugs use has increased or decreased since 1997, both of my subjects agreed it had increased. When I asked what drugs in particular were more popular, the interviewed went along with the research and said meth, as well as opioids like heroin. In addition to this, both participants agreed drugs are more dangerous now more than ever. In particular, one participant said heroin was the most dangerous drug right now, while the other said heroin and synthetic marijuana. To conclude, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Drugs And Prescription Drug Abuse To illustrate the magnitude of the research problem and provide a frame of reference, this section begins with a brief overview of the increased use of pharmaceuticals and prescription drug abuse in the US. The section continues with the relationship between illicit drugs and prescriptions, adolescents' abuse, personal and social factors; then concludes with the theoretical approach. The Social–Ecological Theory, will be applied in researching prescription drug abuse, possible influences and protective factors in adolescents in relation to prescription drug abuse, to develop focused intervention strategies and educational programs for this population, similar to other substances such as tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana. Pharmaceuticals The utilization of prescription drugs has increased across all age groups in the US, with 50% of Americans taking at least one prescription drug (Rice & Unruh, 2016). This can be attributed to physician–induced demand, substitution of pharmaceuticals for other medical regimens, commercialization of the products, increase in the aging population and drug insurance coverage, and also the increase in chronic conditions. Lathan discusses the startling fact that the rate increase of prescription drugs purchased was considerably higher in contrast to the US population growth – 71% and 9% respectively (Rice & Unruh, 2016, p. 264). The total spending on pharmaceuticals reported by CMS in 2014 was an astounding $263 billion (as cited in Rice & Unruh, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Prescription Drug Abuse And Prescription Drugs Prescription Drug Abuse Prescription Drug Abuse has increased in an alarming rate over recent years! Prescription drug related deaths now outnumber those from heroin and cocaine combined. The abuse in prescription drugs in America goes back more than a hundred years ago. Prescription drug abuse is the use of a medication without a prescription, in a way other than prescribed, or for the experience or feelings elicited. Although prescription medications are intended to help individuals, they can sometimes become addictive and can induce serious side effects, changes in behavior, and even death. From personal experience I know how dangerous Prescription Drug Abuse can be. When I was younger, my brother Clay overdosed on Prescription Drugs. He went to a "pharm party," also known as a "pill party." He was found passed out in a bedroom, and was put in a car and taken to the hospital. He was then found to have no heartbeat and they had to cut off his clothes and had to do the difibulizer. He is now in rehab doing much better. Everyday in the United States 2,500 youth abuse a prescription pain reliever for the first time. Prescription drug abuse, while most prevalent in the U.S., is a problem in many areas around the world including Europe, Southern Africa, and Freesmeier 2 South Asia. In the United States alone, more than fifteen million people abuse prescription drugs, more than the combined number who reported abusing cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants, and ... • 4. The Drug Of Drug Abuse Introduction Cocaine is an addictive drug that comes from the coca plant. How cocaine is made and ingested are the primary differences between powdered and crack cocaine. It can be ingested in multiple ways, but inhaling and smoking are the most common. Powdered cocaine is a white substance that is snorted and absorbed through the nasal tissue. Crack cocaine is made by dissolving cocaine with an alkaline (like baking soda), then it turns into a sheet that can be crushed out into "rock" form. In 1986, Congress passed the Anti–Drug Abuse Act. Anyone caught with one gram of crack cocaine would receive the same sentence as another caught with 100 grams of powdered cocaine. Not too long after, Congress enacted a mandatory 5–year sentence for anyone caught with 50 grams of crack (500 grams of powdered) cocaine. Crack is punished this severely for many reasons, mainly being considered more dangerous, addictive, and its involvement with gangs and gun violence compared to powdered cocaine. My literature review will include how this disparity has affected people of color, the changes in the laws, and changes in the prison system. Literature Review Crack was said to be addictive from within its first use. Government sponsored programs have shown that less than one in four try the drug again. Cocaine had many for legal usages at the turn of the century. Cocaine was available in the United States and used in medicines, tonics and soft drinks. Cocaine addictions begun to rise and ... Usually the biggest abusers of medications and prescriptions are from ages 18–25. "Nearly 2/3 of those found in addiction recovery centers report sexual or physical abuse as children. Studies show child abuse to be a major factor in later life drug addiction." The THC that is found in Marijuana can be result of long–lasting effects even after the user has quit smoking. Paper Drug Abuse Drug Addiction Keisha Ellis Drug Abuse & Drug Addiction SOC 203 Social Problems Instructor Ely May 11, 2015 Numerous individuals do not comprehend why individuals get to be dependent on drugs or how drugs can change the mind to cultivate enthusiastic drug abuse. They erroneously view drug misuse and dependence as entirely a social issue and may describe the individuals who take drugs as ethically powerless (Alving, Matyas, Torres, Jalah, & Beck, 2014). One extremely regular belief is that drugs abusers ought to have the capacity to stop taking drugs if they are willing to change their conduct and be a member of society (Alvin et al., 2014). The sociological point of view stands contrary to what may be known as the chemicalistic misrepresentation the perspective that drug (A) causes behavioral conduct X, that what we see as conduct and impacts connected with a given medication are singularly or even basically a component of the biochemical properties of that medication, of the medication in addition to the human creature, or even of the medication in addition to a human organic entity with a certain character structure (Primm, 1992). Drugs impacts and drug related conduct are massively entangled, very variable, and dependent upon numerous things. Furthermore, the most imperative of these things are social and context oriented in nature (Primm, 1992). In the creature world, it is a considerable amount simpler to foresee what drugs will do; anyway, we must try many different things with rats but it does not let us know all that much about human conduct (Primm, 1992). This is the reason social setting is so vital. The negative outcomes of medication misuse influence people who ill–use medicates as well as their families and companions, different organizations, and government assets (Akindipe, Abiodun, Adebajo, Lawal, & Rataemane, 2014). Albeit huge numbers of these impacts can 't be evaluated, "Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) as of late in 2002 reported that, the monetary expense of drug abuse within the United States was $180.9 billion" (Akindipe et al., 2014, Pg 250 Para 10). • 7. Drugs And Drug Abuse For the research on drug use and societal or natural disaster, there is various findings on drug users' lives, before and after disasters. This paper gives a broad explanation of their trauma & stress, housing life styles, and health risk during times of disaster. These topics show the studies on people whom partake in drugs such as Crack/Cocaine Heroine on the day–to–day basis. The researched for this paper worked with the usagers directly to affect the health of those in these situations. Trauma & Stress People that are users of drugs, and more specifically crack, heroine, and other cocaine based drugs have various reasons for their continued drug use. One of the many reasons for these drug users to abuse the drugs they use extend from earlier traumas and events in their lives. The events of natural and unnatural disaster cause an immediate amount of stress for those whom fall in this category. The people falling under this category not only have the stress from their past, present events and possible disaster events, but also the high chance of mental illness. Fifty–four African– Americans from New Orléans were compared to a sample of 162 people from Houston, in this study that lasted from June 2002 to December 2005, there are no significant differences between the two groups on either depression or anxiety, but the New Orléans sample scored higher on the self– esteem scale and scored lower on the risk–taking scale (Timpson, Ratliff, Ross, ... • 8. Drugs And Abuse Of Drugs Drugs and Abuse Abuse of drugs can have effects on the user even after the use of drugs has stopped. Different drugs produce different effects, depending on the user, type of drug, and severity of abuse. New research is done every day in the area of drug abuse that makes finding accurate results on the broad topic of drug abuse very difficult. From the most recent studies only can one find data that is presently accepted as correct. These numerous studies provide enough data to explain the effects of both legal and illegal drugs. To understand how drugs work, it is Important to understand the changes that take place in different areas of the body when drugs take effect. Found in the brain are the synapses, the interaction point of two neurons (Perrine, 1996). The synapses in the brain are often the main target of a drug, altering the perception of something at the point of perception. When a drug is taken, it attaches itself to receptors in the brain, which have a pattern chemically similar to the neurotransmitters that send and receive messages in the brain. Certain drugs can attach themselves to these receptors, they may become blocked, and the neurotransmitters originally being sent by the brain 's neurons are forced to wander around the brain until it can find another similar receptor, possibly creating a false signal (Perrine, 1996). The physiological responses created by these false signals, sent by both the drug and the extraneous neurotransmitters are what ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Drug Abuse In Othello William Shakespeare is responsible for coining the word addiction. Does this make him responsible for everybody with an addiction? Shakespeare defined addiction as a devotion to a habit. Here's an example of how Shakespeare utilized the term addiction in Othello, Act II, Scene II "It is Othello's pleasure, our noble and valiant general, that, upon certain tidings now arrived, importing the mere perdition of the Turkish fleet, every man put himself into triumph; some to dance, some to make bonfires, each man to what sport and revels his addiction leads him." Through the years, there have been many habits that are considered to be addictive. Most commonly known habit is substance abuse. The reason people become addicted to substances ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Just because a person has factors that contribute to drug abuse doesn't mean that the person is doomed to abuse drugs. Many people who have these factors never choose to use drugs at all, and some people who choose to do so dabble only once, and they stop when the first experience is negative. Many people who have addictions, make a conscious choices to engage in their destructive behavior to deal with stress. Stress is the body's way of dealing with a demand. It involves the release of different chemicals in the body so that it is prepared to take action. Stress activates the hypothalamo–pituitary–adrenal axis and the sympathetic nervous system. This is what sets forth the fight or flight reaction when there is a sense of danger. Self–medication is a situation where people turn to alcohol or drugs in an attempt to manage their problems in life. Depressants like alcohol produce a calming effect on the body, and so the individual will feel like they have escaped their difficulties. They may start to take these substances more and more as a way to manage their stress levels. This is dangerous because the self–medication can be far more damaging than the initial stressor itself. Using alcohol or drugs to deal with stress is at best a short–term solution. Substance abuse only masks the problem and doesn't solve it. • 12. Abuse Of Drug Abuse Drug addiction within the healthcare has become a very important issue. Drug–addicted Doctors & Health Care Professionals (2015) studied that "doctors and other health care workers are addicted to drugs in the same proportion as the general population" (para, 1). Anesthesiologists, specifically, continuously shows an increase rate of drug misuse. There are many factors that contribute to the abuse of drugs to include: access to drugs, high stress environment, control–oriented personality. The main drugs that are being abused are fentanyl, sufentanil, merperidine, and morphine (substance abuse among anesthesiologists, 2012). The abuse of drugs by medical professionals causes many patient related problems. The burden of this issue is that diseases may be spreaded. The way physicians get by with using drugs is they inject the patient first, then themselves, and then the patient again. In combination to the dilemma of infection, there is the issue of patients not getting all the drugs they require. When drugs are shared between a medical professional and a patient, it is known as drug diversion, which signifies that the patient who genuinely needs the sedative or anodyne, or both is not receiving a full dose. • 14. The Consequences Of Drug Abuse And Addiction Drug abuse and addiction are controversial topics in modern society. In general, drug abuse leads to drug addiction. Drug abuse can be defined as the overuse of drugs along with the process of undergoing efforts to obtain drugs in an (usually) illegal manner, whereas drug addiction is the inability to live without said drug and engaging in any attempts necessary to obtain them. Addicted individuals engage in drug abuse. The two concepts tend to go together, ruining relationships by becoming the most important thing in the life of someone afflicted with this disease. Most people who find themselves addicted to drugs often seek treatment but end up procrastinating any options to do so and ultimately remain in this harmful cycle. To determine if an individual is abusing drugs, it is important to compare the person's previous behavior with their current behavior. This can be difficult as many addicts tend to distance themselves from their friends and families early on to the point where anyone close to them may not be able to notice a significant change. It could also be useful to track an individual's history at pharmacies to check for possible prescription drug abuse and at convenience stores to check for possible alcohol and cigarette purchases. Quantifying a concept such as drug abuse is difficult but not impossible. One potential quantification method could occur via the administration of a survey regarding respondents' feelings about specific drugs as well as their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Genetic theory means transmission of genes to children by their parents. An individual may become addictive to the substance if any of his ancestor was also addicted to that same substance. • 21. The Drug Of Drug Abuse America has been fighting drug abuse for over a century. Four Presidents have waged a "War on Drugs" and unfortunately, this war continues to be lost at an alarming magnitude. Drug abusers continue to fill our courts, hospitals, and prisons. The drug trade causes violent crime that ravages our neighborhoods. Children of drug abusers are neglected, abused, and even abandoned. The current methods of dealing with this issue are not working. Our society needs to implement new and effective laws and programs to address the problem of drug abuse. Drugs first surfaced in the United States in the 1800's, with the use of opium during and after the Civil War. Cocaine followed in the 1880's and the abuse of these drugs at the end of the 19th century reached epidemic proportions. Morphine was discovered in 1906 and soon became a huge problem as well. Drugs were no longer being viewed as harmless remedies for aches and pains. The Harrison Narcotics Act, passed in 1914, was the United States' first federal drug policy. The aggressively enforced act restricted the manufacture and sale of marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and morphine. During this time there was a worldwide movement limiting opium and coca crops and by World War II, American drug use had become a rare, marginal social problem. During the 1960s, drugs like marijuana, amphetamines, and psychedelics were developed and a new generation was exposed to drugs. Marijuana became fashionable on college campuses and users sought to expand ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The NFL wanted to ease up on the punishments given out on marijuana abuse, and focus on cracking down on DUI's and PED's. The punishments given are varied by what offense the player commits. For one of the most popular of drugs, marijuana, a first time offender will be placed in a substance abuse program without any suspension. A second offense leads to a two game fine. The 1980" s fight against drugs saw the implementation of the Drug Awareness Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program and after school specials. While the two were supported largely by the communities, there has not been clear cut evidence of the programs succeeding due to a lack of a control group (Kochis, 1995). D.A.R.E. along with the afterschool programs are geared towards elementary and middle school aged children as a method of drug deterrence however do not address drug use issues with older teens and young adults. In recent years, teen and young adult drug use/abuse has increased. Also, the increase in drug use has led to an increase in crime (Hawaii Mobilizes, 2003). Those teens and adults caught with illegal substances or commit crimes due to drug use, can be sentenced to jail time which lead to an increase in jail and prison populations. Brain imaging studies of drug–addicted individuals show changes in areas of the brain that are critical to judgment, decisionmaking, learning and memory, and behavior control.
