When a person is arrested for a crime they have the right to put on a defense. The criminal defendant can claim the committed the crime in self defense or they could simply say they are innocent. Another type of defense is the insanity defense. In the insanity defense the criminal defendant claims they are not responsible for the crime due to their mental state. In order to be successful at pleading the insanity defense the defendant must prove they were not in their right mind at the time of the crime. If a defendant is found to be legally insane they will either be sent to a mental health facility or to prison where they will receive mental health treatment.
There have been many famous cases where the criminal defendant claimed they were insane. John Hinckley attempted to assassinate President Reagan but despite the heinous crime he was found not guilty for reasons of insanity. This outraged the American public leading to all types of reforms to the insanity defense. The McNaughton Rule was the original test applied to measuring insanity (Collins, 2006). This test simply asks whether the defendant new the difference between right and wrong at the time of the crime. After Hinckley the McNaughton rule was discarded in many states and the burden of proof went from the prosecutor to the defendant.
In some rare case a jury will find a person temporarily insane. In the Lorena Bobbitt case the defendant was found temporarily insane after she mutilated her husband’s genitalia. Lorena Bobbitt is infamous for cutting off her husband’s penis after he raped her. Bobbitt then discarded the penis but it was later retrieved by police. Lorena claimed she was under extreme stress at the time she got the knife and mutilated her sleeping husband. She claimed she did not understand what she was doing when she took a knife to her husband. The jury agreed with Lorena and found her not guilty by reason of insanity.
Jonathon Schmitz was a criminal defendant who killed a gay man, Amedure, who had a crush on him. Schmitz was invited onto a talk show about same sex crushes but was angered when he was confronted by a male friend claiming to have a crush instead of an ex girlfriend or another female as Schmitz expected. Schmitz felt humiliated on national television when Amedure described sexual feelings he had for Schmitz. Later Amedure sent Schmitz a sexually explicit note causing him to grab a shotgun and shoot Amedure. Schmidt claimed insanity but was found guilty of second degree murder.

You are a Wichita Police Department detective working in the major crimes unit, and you are assigned to a joint federal–state–city crime task force working on a number of major drug cases. Over a period of several months, your task force has been able to gather information and make cases on several of the drug suppliers, drug dealers, and drug buyers in the Wichita metropolitan area. The task force is about to complete its mission by filing criminal charges in the federal district court, the state district court, or the Wichita Municipal Court against these various suspects. I will summarize those strengths and weaknesses here to make sure I am reading your reports correctly. I need you to give me advice on where you think these charges should be brought.
Jones has been working for you as a confidential informant because you have evidence against him for a February 6, 2005 third possession of cocaine after convictions in 1993 and 1994. He appears to have followed the terms of his deal with you to introduce our undercover agents to his dealer. We have promised not to prosecute for any drug offenses he may commit in the presence of our undercover agent while playing the role of our informant. Origins of the PSI
The origins of the modern presentence investigation began in the 1840s with the
crusading efforts of Boston shoemaker John Augustus (1841-1859). It was Augustus’
belief that the "object of the law is to reform criminals and to prevent crime, and not to
punish maliciously or from a spirit of revenge." In his efforts to redeem selected
offenders, Augustus gathered background information about the offender’s life and
criminal history. If he determined that the person was worthy, Augustus provided bail
money out of his own pocket. If he succeeded in winning the person’s release, he helped
them find employment and housing. Later he appeared at the sentencing hearing and
provided the judge with a detailed report of the person’s performance. Augustus would
then recommend that the judge suspend the sentence and release the person to his
custody.
Considered the father of modern probation, Augustus’s leadership led the Massachusetts
legislature to establish the nation’s first probation law in 1878. By authorizing the Mayor
of Boston to appoint a member of the police department to serve as a paid probation
officer, this statute formalized the practice of extending probation to "such persons as
may be reasonably be expected to be reformed without punishment." The law was
expanded in 1891 with the creation of an independent state-wide probation system. By
the time that the National Probation Act was passed in 1925 creating a Federal probation
service, the majority of states had probation statutes.
The evolution of the presentence investigation was given further impetus by the
reformatory movement of the 1870s. Because reformatory movement proponents
advocated an individualized approach towards the redemption of the criminal,
indeterminate sentencing became a popular sentencing reform throughout the later half of

Origins of the PSI
The origins of the modern presentence investigation began in the 1840s with the
crusading efforts of Boston shoemaker John Augustus (1841-1859). It was Augustus’
belief that the "object of the law is to reform criminals and to prevent crime, and not to
punish maliciously or from a spirit of revenge." In his efforts to redeem selected
offenders, Augustus gathered background information about the offender’s life and
criminal history. If he determined that the person was worthy, Augustus provided bail
money out of his own pocket. If he succeeded in winning the person’s release, he helped
them find employment and housing. Later he appeared at the sentencing hearing and
provided the judge with a detailed report of the person’s performance. Augustus would
then recommend that the judge suspend the sentence and release the person to his
custody.
Considered the father of modern probation, Augustus’s leadership led the Massachusetts
legislature to establish the nation’s first probation law in 1878. By authorizing the Mayor
of Boston to appoint a member of the police department to serve as a paid probation
officer, this statute formalized the practice of extending probation to "such persons as
may be reasonably be expected to be reformed without punishment." The law was
expanded in 1891 with the creation of an independent state-wide probation system. By
the time that the National Probation Act was passed in 1925 creating a Federal probation
service, the majority of states had probation statutes.
The evolution of the presentence investigation was given further impetus by the
reformatory movement of the 1870s. Because reformatory movement proponents
advocated an individualized approach towards the redemption of the criminal,
indeterminate sentencing became a popular sentencing reform throughout the later half of

Appreciate and support the bond between the child and family. A bond between a child and family is very strong. A parent is it's child 's first teacher. Entering school can be stressful and nerve wrecking for both child and parent. I will let the parents know that they can be involved with their children by volunteering their time to the classroom. I will encourage parents and family to come see how their child is learning through plays or show casing their work at the end of each lesson. For example, we just finished our lesson on plants and how they grow. We drew pictures of seeds, stems, flowers, dirt, etc. We even planted some seeds. Now it's time for performance. The children worked so hard in making their costumes out of construction paper and learning to memorize their lines. Now it is time to invite the parents to watch their children act out what they learned about plants.
Respect the dignity, worth, and uniqueness of each individual (child, family member, and colleagues). It is important to respect the children, families, and colleagues. Every child is different, I will learn about the children's uniqueness and teach the children that everyone learns differently. In my classroom we will discuss and learn about the student's culture and habits. I can one day have parents bring in a dish from their culture and as we sitting down in the classroom talking about how and where this dish comes from, we can then taste it.
Recognize that children and adults achieve their full potential in the context of relationships that are based on trust and respect. At the start of the day I will greet each child as an individual. I want the children to know that I trust and respect them and in return they can trust and respect me.

In this movie, Sonny adopted a permissive parenting style where he allowed the child to make his own choices, so much that he even allowed him to choose his own name! Sonny later learns that this style of parenting is causing trouble in the child's schooling and resorts to being more assertive in the child's decision making process.

My second concept would be aggression. Sonny displays hostility through both physical and verbal aggression towards others. The child observes this behavior and imitates the same behaviors in situations. The child, Julian, actually feels seeing others get physically hurt is comical. It seems that Sonny's outrageous and aggressive behavior is a result of his father's authoritarian child-rearing style.

The third concept I would cover in relation to the movie is resilience. If not for this 5 year-old's resilience, Sonny probably would have placed the child with social services. Julian was "delivered" to Sonny's door with no idea as to who Sonny was or why his mother left him there. We later learn that Julian's mom dies from cancer. While with his mother there probably was a considerable amount of neglect being as though she was probably to weak and sick to tend to her son needs and the next best person to leave him to is a complete stranger. Considering this, Julian was an adaptive and happy young boy. Also, the sunglasses that Sonny gives Julian help Julian adapt to anxious situations and calm his fear.

A wound is a break in the integrity of the skin or tissues, which may be associated with disruption of the structure and function.
Healing is the body’s response to injury in an attempt to restore normal structure and functions.
Healing can occur in two ways: Regeneration and Repair
There are 4 phases of wound healing: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. This document also describes the mechanism of wound healing. Factors that affect healing include infection, uncontrolled diabetes, poor nutrition, age, anemia, the presence of foreign bodies, etc.
